About this property
Remote Luxurious Riverside Jungle Retreat/Farmstay
The PERFECT RETREAT to disconnect, unwind and reconnect with nature. Located on a cliff directly riverside with epic valley and river views, TOTALLY OFF THE GRID, solar powered, safe, comfy and luxurious. Designed and hand built by the owners, the River Cabin is the ONLY ACCOMMODATION on the farm, Uniquely located at the union of two rivers at literally the end of the road. The farm is 140 acres with 1.5 miles of riverfront and is all yours to explore and all meals are all delivered !
A one of a kind, timber framed, thatch roofed structure, envisioned, designed and hand built by the owners with onsite, local, renewable and salvaged materials. The space is sited directly on the Saloya River bank, with epic valley and river views. The space is created and filled with natural materials, at once warm, inviting, comfortable and stylish. The design highlights the dramatic location, and features a blend of Japanese, Bungalow, and arts and crafts architectural influences. The cabin and property is totally off the grid with its own sanitary capped mountain spring gravity feed 'zero energy' water system and solar panels provide the electric energy. This cabin is located on Finca Aveterra, a one of a kind farm and homestead envisioned and created by the owners, Jon and Cheryl. At Finca Aveterra our focus is - designing and sculpting a life and a way of living that provides for our basic needs in a sustainable, independent way while creating a richer more diverse landscape for all the farms inhabitants, human, plant, wild and domesticated through the application of Syntropic Agriculture and Permaculture principles and good old fashioned hard work!
You have access to our entire property during your stay. We can provide a farm tour if you are interested. Access to an extensive trail system and all riverfront and swim holes. We have a natural swimming pond, fruit trees, bananas, cassava, cacao and coffee and much more.
Other things to note -
FOOD: The base price of the cabin includes a continental breakfast stocked in the cabin. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking including staples, oil, spices, condiments, coffee, tea, etc. There are a number of options for lunch and dinner: 1) Bring you own supplies and enjoy cooking! 2) Sign up for our farm meal plan and enjoy continental breakfast and a lunch and dinner served to you in the cabin.
ACTIVITIES: We can arrange birding tours, fishing tours and massages. For the real birding enthusiast see our hot spot 'Finca Ave Terra" on ebird. Ask about our birding packages. We collaborate with some of the best bird guides in Ecuador. In addition we are located slightly lower than the Mindo area (300 meters) and have additional species on our property not seen in Mindo.

About the host
Hosted by Cheryl Byrd

I am a mother of 3 grown children, a cook, pastry chef, gardener and exceptional host. I get the most satisfaction in life by nourishing and caring for those around me, and that includes my guests! Born and raised in the US to an Ecuadorian mother, when young I traveled many times to Ecuador to visit and I have extensive family and friends here. This is now my home. In 2011, I moved here with my husband (an ex software executive from Baltimore) searching for health, good food, travel, opportunity, adventure and a farm to grow our own organic food! Once here we also decided to develop a home in Quito for ourselves, family and friends Our dreams have been realized as we have our beautiful home in Quito and have purchased a large tract of land, 140 acres and 1.5 miles of riverfront, near the international Ecotourism destination, Mindo Ecuador. We are in the process of developing an organic farm while restoring and regenerating the landscape. Working alongside the forces of nature, we aim to create a landscape which yields a healthy bounty for man and beast, while at the same time supports the region's unique Choco-Andean biodiversity.
Why they chose this property
Peace, Serenity, intense nature, natural gravity fed spring water, river, birds, off the grid. Good old fashioned country living. Remember the good ole days?
What makes this property unique
This cabin is one of a kind, hand built by the owners, everything on the property was designed and built by the owners, from the roads to the terraces, ponds, water systems, power systems.
This is a totally authentic experience that can't be recreated or duplicated. The owners are totally involved, we cook, serve and serve as tour guides. We are homesteaders in the Andean mountains and would love to share our paradise with you!
