We allow most dogs. They must be leashed while outside the cabins. If they are left alone and anxious they must be kenneled if there is any chance they will destroy any part of our property. If they disturb other guests with barking or crying while left in the cabins you will be called to come back and care for them or take them along on your daily travels. Aggressive pets will not be tolerated on our property.
The rates for pets are 15/day up to 25lbs. 25-50 lbs are 25/day and over 50lbs are 35/day.
Remember that all people are not dog lovers as many of us are and we need to be courteous of their choices.

Not what we expected

Priced high for what you got. Came in to ants and dead bugs on bed. Called to let management know. They said they sprayed a few weeks before and forgot to change bedding. But every night we had ants on the bed. We went to make coffee and the old grounds were left in coffee pot and were molded. Cabins were tight next to each other so no privacy. a lot of ATVs were buzzing around late into the night loud. Owners were kind and the cabin had a nostalgic feel to it.

Perfect in Every Way!

While travelling across the country, I ended up making last minute reservations at Wikiup Cabins. Every one of my emails were immediately answered, and I found the owner to be informative, helpful, and responsive. There was nobody in the office upon my arrival, but there was an intercom system, as well as strategically placed notes informing guests exactly how to contact the owner. Locating the owner took less than thirty seconds, and the check in was immediate. I had requested a cot for my stay, and the cot and bedding was remembered and provided. I rented, what I believe to be, the smallest cabin. It is called, "Prospectors Cabin," and it was much larger than any hotel room. I was expecting tiny, but instead I received a cozy, comfortable and new-rustic cabin. I use the word, "Rustic," to mean decorated and constructed to fit the western environment. The word hardly describes the amenities. The wireless Internet was blazing fast, and the flat screen TV received more stations than one could ever need or want. The kitchenette included a small fridge, full size sink, a small four burner gas stove, coffee maker, toaster, and plenty of dishes and necessities. The cabin also included a gas burning stove for heat, and believe me when I say, it immediately warmed up the cabin. Besides providing heat, it also included a contained flame and fake log (all behind tempered glass), which added to the wonderful atmosphere of the cabin. The bathroom was small, but perfect for our needs. Remember, this is the smallest cabin, and it is more than perfect for two. The four walls and ceiling were knotty pine, and the floor was a wood laminate. Our cabin had four small windows, one of which provided a view of the beautiful creek that runs through the property. The cabins are nicely spaced, and I never heard any of my neighbors. The property is absolutely beautiful, and it is in a great location to visit the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, Mt Rushmore, Badlands, and Devil's Tower in Wyoming. The casinos of Deadwood are a ten minute drive, and there is a small cafe (with a full breakfast, lunch, dinner, and alcohol menu) that is a two minute walk from the cabins. I am taking the time to write this review, as I hope it will help travelers make an informed decision. I was hesitant to make reservations at Wikiup after reading an older review, and I was immediately relieved when I pulled in the property and walked into my cabin. It was perfect!

Great Location, Poor Execution

For some reason my family's experience at Wickiup Village was very different from other visitors. The photos at VRBO did not properly represent our experience. The reservation process was great. Likewise, when we called and said we would be arriving late the front desk got our cabin ready, turned on the heat, and left the lights on for us. We were very impressed when we pulled into the village. The cabins are cute, all be it very rustic but that was part of the charm. When we got into the cabin it was much more rustic than advertised but it was kind of cool--even the floor that was so sloped if felt like a fun house. However, it did not look anything like the photo posted on this site. It was late so we tried to go straight to bed but a family reunion roared on into the night. Finally about 12:30 am it was quiet. At 6:30 the kids from the family reunion were running up and down the village screaming and laughing. At 7 am I got up and opened the curtains and to my surprise, right outside our window was a trash dump. At about 9:30 we saw someone from the front office and mentioned the noise. Her only comment was that she knew it was loud and other people had complained too. I did not pursue it any farther. I then asked if she had any plastic bags to pick-up dog feces. She handed me some bags and asked if I was picking up after my dog. I said, "no, I did not bring my dog" and showed her the 3 or 4 piles of dog feces around the entrance to our cabin. The lady from the front office sat in her golf cart and watched me pick up the dog feces, trash, and cigarette butts around the front of the cabin. When we got back to the village we went to the front office to check out a gas grill since fires and charcoal were off limits due to fire danger. I went to the office at 5:40 to get the grill but the office was locked and dark. The sign said the office is open until 6:00 so we tried the inter-com. There was no answer. I went back to the cabin to cook on the stove. While cooking the pan slid off the stove and fell on the floor because the counter and stove are very slanted. At check-out I mentioned this to the front desk and the reply was, "I know, isn't that funny." Funny? Will it be funny when someone gets seriously burned. Bottom line--this place has great potential but it obviously needs the proper staff and maintenance to make it good. At this point I cannot recommend this property.

We keep going back.

We found Wickiup Village back in 2004. Since then we have stayed there around 12 times. We have stayed in multiple cabins but have always enjoyed our stay. Les and Jackie Wolff will make you feel like family and the people we have met at Wickiup have been great. For the past several years we have stayed at Wickiup during the Sturgis Bike Rally and have gone back over the Labor Day weekend. Wickiup is always a "special" place for us to stay, we love the beauty of the Black Hills and look forward to our trips up there every year. If you are interested in staying for either of those events you better get your reservation in early! Wickiup is always full during these times and we see the same people year after year.....Wickiup has a very loyal following. Once you have stayed there you will want to come back.........again and again and again! If you enjoy sitting out under the trees and stars, listening to the river flow by, and relaxing by the bon fire and meeting interesting people from around the nation.........then Wickiup is probably the place for you. It has been, and is, for us!

Will Visit Again!!!!! Beats any hotel stay!

Our stay at Wickiup cabins was unbeatable! I too had a slight disconnect in my mind after reading the negative review, but decided I will make up my mind for myself. Good thing. We stayed in the "Tensleep" cabin. Like another reviewer mentioned, it was smaller and cozy, but much bigger than a hotel room you would get for a similar price. It was very clean and well equipped, had a nice little kitchenette. A grill was provided as well as charcoal and lighter fluid left over by previous campers. Kitchenette also has coffee, filters, sugar, pepper and salt. We were left alone the entire stay, and the camp area was very quiet and serene. When we needed to get ahold of the owner she was there and ready to inform. They really run a nice operation. She was extremely helpful in helping us find "off the map" things to do that were close to the area, she even provided help late into the night when we thought we had an emergency with our pet, providing us with her home phone and calling her own personal contacts for help. (dog swallowed a large bone, little AT&T cell service) She was very very friendly and very informative. When we return to the hills we will be going back. Our cabin was about 200 feet from the creek. Their location is unlike others in the area, although it is right off 14A, is is very nestled in the pines and hillsides, unlike other cabin groups in the area in an open meadow. Absolutely beautiful location, excellent cabins at a very reasonable price, and wonderful owners. What more do you need?!
