Great first visit to Door Co.
The property was even better than the VRBO listing. The lodge sits back from road down a wooded lane. It was very peaceful and quiet, and very dark at night. There are neighbors on both sides of the property but we did not feel like there wasn’t enough privacy. If the neighbors were home, we never heard them. The lodge was clean. There were plenty of dishes, silverware, pots, pans, lids and cutlery. The furniture was comfortable and so were the beds. Everything was conveniently labeled and John was very easy to work with. He provided lots of info about the area, places to eat, things to do, etc. John provided a complete guide to the lodge and the property which eliminated any guessing. We did not have to do a bunch of required cleanup before leaving. The location of the lodge was perfect. It was easy to get to the other side of the peninsula which has more restaurants, and grocery stores options. We loved the fact the lodge is on what we call “ the quiet side” of the peninsula. We really enjoyed sitting on the back porch in the morning, drinking coffee and listening to Lake Michigan and the birds. The lake was absolutely gorgeous and we spent time on the rocky beach area daily. We saw many water birds and a bald eagle. In summary we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were well-rested by the end of our week. We plan to return in the future. We would love to visit in the fall. Thanks for a great stay!

One of Our Favorites
I'm 56 years old and have been coming to Door County since I was a little kid. I have literally stayed all over the peninsula. Hands down, Killasonna has been one of my favorites. It's on a lovely lot. The access to the water is amazing. The home is well tended to and (unlike most rentals) well appointed and furnished. The owners are lovely and communicative. STAY HERE. You will not regret it.

Gorgeous property creating a peaceful retreat
Our family (father, mother, two gown boys ages 20 and 24) enjpyed a wonderful week at Killasonna lodge. The house is impeccably beautiful, welcoming with its warm wood interiors with all the modern conveniences. The property is goregous, right on the shore of Lake Michigan. All throughout the day, we enjoyed quiet time contemplating the beauty of the lake and shore from the comfort of the porch of the house, or down on the chaise lounges closer to the waterfront. The fire-pit area is spacious and well planned; there is an ample supply of dried firewood; and we ended each day with toasted marshmallows or s'mores. The property is quiet and secluded, but an easly and short drive (or cycle) from the best of Door County: Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes, the more 'touristy' towns on the other side of the Door Peninsula, and Cana Island Lighthouse. In short, we loved Killasonna, and we loved our stay. Hoping to return next year for another wonderful stay. Thank you to our hosts, who were responsive and helpful!

Quiet Cabin
Cabin is great and pictures represent it well. Really beautiful architecture. Very quiet and secluded we did not see another neighbor during the stay. Nice indoor and outdoor sitting areas with small rock beach. A couple tips, the cabin has a charcoal grill instead of propane, so you need to bring in your own supplies to use. Also, water has a lot of minerals, there is a sign on the washing machine that clothes may get rust colored from using, which did happen during stay. Last, would definitely recommend water shoes if plan to use rock beach, especially for kids.

Home was right on the lake. Interior was well-appointed and well-equipped. We are cyclists and the lightly traveled road was a nice place to start a ride. The owner was very helpful with suggestions about where to go and where to eat.

Great place to spend a vacation!
We had a wonderful week at Killasonna Lodge! The home is just beautifully constructed and the layout is perfect for our 3 generation family, giving my mom her own space on the main level. The kitchen is the best stocked of any rental we’ve ever stayed at, from utensils to spices and condiments! The fire pit by the water is fabulous as well, although the view from the porch is also excellent. We love the location, our family prefers the quiet side and proximity to Cave Point. We were a little surprised to find no television, but ended up not missing it at all! The cabin was very clean and the owners are easy to reach and give a lot of information and helpful hints about the area.

Wonderful Vacation
The property was just as described. John was very easy to communicate with about the property and the local area. The house was very comfortable and suited us well. Jacksonport is one of the quieter towns which was great for us. The house is within 2 miles of two of the best swimming beaches. We hope to stay again. This was one of our favorite properties.

Heaven in Door County
Well appointed, incredibly authentic with lovely details. And a back porch that might be the best in the region. John was an excellent host, very communicative and helpful, right now to a Survival Guide with everything from biking routes to restaurants to parks and local attractions. He even emailed us during our stay to let us know about a concert in town while we were there. Incredibly thoughtful! We loved Killasonna and will remember it forever. Relaxing in the comfortable back porch chairs, looking out through the woods onto Lake Michigan, sipping freshly brewed coffee from the Blue Horse Cafe in Fish Creek will be a simple treasured memory for years to come. Thank you for the incredible hospitality.

Just as beautiful as advertised
The location is fantastic. The house is right on Lake Michigan and in the woods. You can walk to the town for supplies, or to either the county or state parks, which are great. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, etc. so cooking was super easy. The pictures reflect pretty accurately how pleasant the house is. Being so close to the lake, it enjoys a more moderate microclimate than inland. When inland felt more muggy and hot, it was extremely pleasant inside and outside the house. If you like being in nature, you should enjoy it.

Gateway to Door County
Just a fantastic vacation home and location! Located on the shore of Lake Michigan with gorgeous views that can be enjoyed from inside the home, on the patio or a few steps away near the lakeshore campfire . The beds and linens are very nice and ensure a great nights rest. The home has a place for everyone to relax inside or out. Lawn chairs are provided for use at the bonfire, as well as an abundance of firewood. Be prepared to spend your evenings outside to watch the moon rise and gaze at the beautiful stars. The Location is fantastic! Sandy beaches are just a mile or two from the doorstep, and access to all your favorite DC spots are an easy drive. We just loved the well appointed home that has everything you will need from kitchen, to laundry to comfort & games. We highly recommend and hope to have the opportunity to spend another week making new memories with our family.

Nice getaway from the city
We escaped the city for a week up in beautiful Door County. The house was great. Lots of amenities to keep us bait when we were at the house - games, books, sitting on the porch watching the lake. Great location to all that Door County has to offer. We really enjoyed hiking at the state parks. Nice place to rest, relax and recharge.

Quintessential Cabin, Idyllic Location
My husband and I, along with our two sons (9 and 10 1/2) and my mother just returned from a week's stay in Killasona Lodge. From the moment we walked in, we felt like we were home. The cabin is well equipped and the interior design is exactly what I'd pictured when we first started planning our trip. The five of us with more than comfortable there for the week. My boys enjoyed playing games in the loft in the evenings, and we enjoyed sitting out on the porch listening to the waves crash on the rocks. The lake views are lovely as are the sun and moon rises. When we did leave the lodge, almost everything we wanted was within a 20-minute drive. If you're looking for a quintessential cabin in an idyllic location, look no further. We hope to be back some day.

Lovely Lake Michigan House
We so enjoyed our stay at Killasonna Lodge in mid-July! The home is beautiful and only a stone's throw from the water. WE never saw or heard another person while we were in the home - it is so private. My favorite part of our trip was spending my early mornings on the back deck - drinking coffee, reading and listening to the birds and water. Our kids loved swimming in Lake Michigan and throwing rocks in the lake. The house is very well appointed - even with things like coffee filters, spices, dishwasher pods, sharp knives (which actually cut things!), nice cotton sheets (not the hot polyester ones!), etc. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the owners sent us a great manual full of things we needed to know about the home and Door County. The whole area is so charming, and we loved our visit. There is only one caveat that I would make if you are someone who reads the reviews in full and have made it to this point - this is absolutely a five star house with a water problem. In the packet of information we received 10 days before our trip, we were informed that the house uses well water and sometimes it smells badly and can stain clothing. I don't know if that fluctuates, but it was pretty terrible when we were there. It smelled strongly of iron and some of our clothing was ruined including our pillow cases that we brought with us because we'd go to bed with wet hair - we noticed when we got home that they all were stained a rusty color. For us, it was un-drinkable, and we never felt fully clean after showering. Wisconsin doesn't have a great water as it is, but I feel like there is probably a solution to this problem that the owner should look into. Just full disclosure. It didn't take away from the beauty and charm of the house, and I am not sure it would keep us from renting this particular house again, but it was a bit distateful.

Wonderful Stay
We really enjoyed our stay last week at this cabin. So spacious and peaceful. It was wonderful that it was wooded and very private. Great access to the lake for our daughter to swim with us. A great fire pit and porch to listen to the waves. It also was still close enough to go to many of the other popular spots in Door County. We definitely loved it! Thank you again!

Amazing Property, Amazing Location! It has it all!
My wife and I have been vacationing in DC for over 22 years, renting lake houses, inland houses, etc., all over the peninsula to enjoy various locations and homes. This is one of the best properties we have ever rented. Amazingly clean, well appointed with EVERYTHING you need. I cannot stress enough just how well appointed this lodge is - it has everything you need and more. From the amazingly clean bathrooms, to the fully stocked kitchen where you can prepare meals. The home itself has amazing character and charm, and that wonderful cabin/wood lodge smell. The firepit, with included firewood, was perfect for those cool nights stargazing and listening to the water. Beyond the tangible things you'd expect to find in a rental home, the owners provide such amazing communication throughout the entire process. Very detailed information is sent including directions, pictures, things to do, places to eat, etc, even down to detours you might experience. Very helpful for those new to Door County and unfamiliar with the area. I would certainly recommend this to friends and family and anyone who is interested in just unplugging in DC (although, as 2 working professionals, it was great to have very fast internet when needed!). :-) Thank you John for opening up your home to us!

About the host

Host profile image
We are both Chicago natives, now living in Evanston, IL. Carolyn is an architect and formerly a municipal building official. John managed major design and construction projects for Northwestern University. We are now semi-retired, operating a business called University Icons. In a nutshell, we sell fine art photographs of iconic university buildings. The business draws on John’s long standing avocation of photography, our combined enjoyment of travel and mutual interest in architecture. We each have two daughters from previous marriages.

Why they chose this property

After years of vacationing in Door County, we began looking at cottages and land in the summer of 2002, with the idea of either buying or building a summer cabin. We clocked hundreds of miles, over many weekends, driving back and forth across the peninsula in search of the right property. Nothing seemed just right. Carolyn had a yearning for a cabin on the lake, or at least a view, but our budget was slim. Eventually we found ourselves along the Lake Michigan shore, staring into dense woods. In the foreground a sign read, For Sale - 1.5 acres. Curiosity forced us to take a walk through the woods. Of course, we fell in love with it the moment we stepped on shore. The price of the land exceeded our total budget (Isn't that always the case?), but we had fallen in love and there was no stopping us. We concocted a scheme: We would rent the place out to vacationers and enjoy it ourselves when it was free.

As soon as our offer was accepted, we began sketching potential designs like mad. We closed on the property in early December, 2002 and cleared the woods for the driveway before Christmas. Construction started the following March, and by the end of the year, the bulk of construction was finished. On January 1, 2004 we launched our website and signed up with VRBO. We spent that spring building, varnishing and hanging doors, varnishing the cabinets, shopping for furniture, etc. It was a photo finish. When our first guests arrived that spring, the paint on the shed doors was still wet.

Killasonna Lodge is situated in an area that was developed in 1922 by an enterprising young woman named Annie Reynolds. She called the plat of subdivision “The Killasonna Plat.” We borrowed the name to commemorate her vision.

What makes this property unique

Carolyn swears that the best therapy is to simply collect kindling in the woods for the fire place or the fire pit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
