About this property
Cottage on Hay Bay. Private boat launch & dock.
Escape to the countryside, leaving behind the stress of everyday life at this gem of a property which is known as the ‘One-Eared Rabbit Retreat’. This charming two-bedroom cottage, is the perfect getaway for fishing enthusiasts. Hay Bay provides one of the best fishing spots in southeastern Ontario. Located near the community of Napanee and a forty minute drive to Prince Edward County. This wonderful little oasis will provide you with a comfortable and casual ambiance for your vacation.
The space
One-Eared Rabbit Retreat:
A small concrete garden ornament, in the shape of a rabbit, was found by the stairs leading down to the lake. Apparently, it had been placed there by the previous owner, and had weathered many years of being left out and exposed to the environment. It looked pretty bedraggled with paint chips coming off and it was missing one ear. Soon it became a sort of mascot for our property and we would jokingly refer to the cottage as the One-Eared Rabbit Retreat, and the name has stuck. If you come for a visit you will still see it sitting by the lake, stoically watching over the cottage.
The space is cozy and comfortable, with an eclectic mix of furniture. The living room has enough sitting for five, and has a large flat screen T.V. with satellite connection as well as a stereo sound system, for entertainment. The kitchen dining room has a vaulted ceiling and a large dining table, which seats six. The fully functioning kitchen comes with a microwave, a full-size refrigerator, and an electric stove. Other appliances include a drip style coffee maker, tea kettle, and toaster. All of the dishes, utensils, kitchen linens and cooking pots will be found in the cupboards and drawers. There is a sink faucet which supplies the cottage with filtered drinking water. In this room, you will also find a sofa bed, which can be used for extra guests. The linens for this double bed are kept in the closet between the 2 bedrooms. The two bedrooms provide sleeping quarters for four people. The main bedroom has a queen size bed with pillow top mattress and a four drawer dresser. In the second bedroom, there are two single beds, as well as a dresser. In the three-piece bathroom, you will find hand, wash, and bath towels (no beach towels), as well as soap and shampoo dispensers. There is also a hairdryer stored in the cabinet for your convenience.
The property comes with an expansive waterfront which includes a dock, boat launch, and fire pit; with each area providing incredible water views of Hay Bay. Relax and enjoy the scenery from one of a variety of seating arrangements, or curl-up on a lounge chair to read. If you want to cool off in the lake, be sure to bring beach towels. Water footwear is also recommended as the waterfront is rocky and it can be weedy.

You will have access to the property at the cottage, except for the boathouse. You may tie-up your boat along the dock, on the ramp side.
There is enough space to park a couple of vehicles at the cottage. If you are bringing your own boat, we have an on-site private boat launch ramp that you may use. Our launch ramp can accommodate a boat up to 17 feet. There is room to park the trailer after you launch. You should plan to bring your fuel with you, because there is no nearby marina.
Our home is located on the property (at the road), and we always respect our guest’s privacy to ensure that you have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. We offer no-contact check-in for your convenience using a keypad number that you will be provided with your reservation, but you are welcome to stop at the house or call if you have questions, and we will do our best to assist you.
Other things to note
Other things to note:
The water is obtained from the lake. It has been filtered and passes along a UV light before coming into the cottage. There is a tap in the kitchen from the reverse osmosis system, that is used for drinking water. If you have a particular palate or concerns, we recommend you bring bottled water.
There is a fire-pit that you may use. Unless the County is in a total fire ban, local municipal regulations allow for a campfire no sooner than 2 hours before sunset, and no later than 2 hours after sunrise. Firewood can be purchased. Fireworks are only permitted July 1.
If you plan to go fishing/ boating, please be mindful of the Provincial regulations, licenses and permits that you may need.
Safety:
We are on the lake. Water levels can change during the seasons.
