About this property

Pet friendly Maine Waterfront Farmhouse with Amazing Views @Canadian Border

Winter, spring, summer or fall, forget your worries & feel your stress melt away in this charming waterfront home.

Wake-up to glorious sunrises, relax on one of the many outside seating areas, swim, float, fish, kayak, go boating, whale/bird watching, river rafting, leaf peeping, nap on the hammocks, sun bath, have a beach/pit fire, golf, hike, catch a movie or summer concert, or simply enjoy the incredible water views, and the ever changing (25’) tide from the inside.

There is a private office shed at the water’s edge with WiFi and a Q sofa-bed should you need to work. There is a pool/ping-pong table in the barn for those rainy days, as well as books, board games, and children’s toys.

You can do it all at RiverHouse.

RiverHouse is a traditional Maine farmhouse built in 1840. It sits on an acre of land on the St. Croix. It is flanked by coves, and it is landscaped with flower beds, apple, peach & lilac trees. It has been totally renovated while keeping its charm, and has amazing water views from every room. The driveway is large enough for a boat.

The dining and living rooms have French doors that open to gravel patios. The sunroom has wall-to-wall windows perfectly capturing the spectacular views, and an electric fireplace for those chilly days. The kitchen also has wall to wall windows, double ovens, and is fully stocked with every essentials, and more- you will find in the fridge and pantry complimentary basics. The family room has a large sectional, smart TV, sound bar & electric fireplace for cozy family nights. The bedrooms all have very comfy, plush mattresses, water views & black-out curtains. The bed in the master bedroom faces large windows-get ready to wake-up to surreal sunrises. There’s a 2nd family room off the master bedroom with sofas & a half-bathroom.

You can access the beach at either side of the property via lit stairs. There’s a rocky beach with a small over-the-water (high-tide) deck. There are foldable sun loungers, beach towels, and 4 adult & 3 youth kayaks-picture yourself kayaking down the beautiful St Croix with eagles soaring overhead. You may also take the kayaks to nearby lakes.

There is a dual pallet/gas grill, a family table at the water’s edge, and several seating areas scattered throughout the property for you to relax & enjoy the magnificent views. There are also several hammocks, a swing bench, a floating deck with wooden sun loungers, and a fire pit with free firewood. At night the trees are bathed in blue light & there are solar lights throughout the property-you’ll feel like you’re at a resort.

Calais is your quintessential small American town with shops, restaurants and bars dotting Main St. It sits on the St. Croix River with 3 border crossings into Canada. There’s a movie theater, public library, boat launch, golf course, a waterfront walkway, and concerts are held during the summer at the riverfront park.

The St. Croix is saltwater and tidal, flowing into the Bay of Fundy which has the highest tides, and is full of freshwater and saltwater marine life.

RiverHouse is just 2 mins from the St Croix Country Club ⛳️, 5 mins from downtown, hiking trails, boat launch, & the Canadian border, 30 minutes from Eastport, 50 minutes from Lubec and Campobello Island (Roosevelt’s summer home) and 2 hours from Bar Harbor, Bangor and from Aroostook County. it is perfectly located for exploring unspoiled Downeast Maine, “The County” and Canada.

Wonderful, inside and out

House was lovely, very clean and thoughtfully stocked; even fresh flowers in several of the rooms. Beds were comfortable and set up for cold weather as we were there in December. Our host, Gabriela, was highly responsive and welcoming. And the views of the water were beautiful, highly recommend.

Water front farmhouse

Our stay was nothing short of perfection, everyone had enough space to spread out, yet there were plenty of cozy spots to gather together! The sunrises were absolutely beautiful and we loved enjoying them with the electric fireplace and a cup of coffee on the enclosed porch area. The kitchen had everything we needed. The home in general surpassed our expectations and we had an incredible time, the host was a pleasure to deal with and replied immediately, she was so very friendly. Plan to come back in the near future!

Golf vacation

The home is beautiful. It is old, but the owner has made some cool improvements to it. Like a comfortable room to watch tv with a good soundtrack. The best room in the house overlooks the river and was the room we would be in during the day

Touring north Maine coast

Great location as a base, close to town but private and in a beautiful spot. Watching the estuary ebb and flow while eagles soared over head. House was spacious and very well equipped. Had everything we needed and more. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Gabriela’s riverfront home. The view from the sunporch and kitchen cannot be beat! We loved the multitude of seating options both indoors and out, the electric fireplaces, and comfortable beds. We did notice some areas of the home (namely the kitchen floor) had not been swept before our arrival, but that was simple to take care of ourselves. We also did not realize the proximity to a major road based on the photos, but didn’t notice the road noise much. Overall we were pleased with the space and location!

Quiet place for a family to relax

It’s a quiet place to relax our family enjoyed a longer weekend. It’s a old house on the water getting upgraded and less than an hour drive to Lubec and West Quoddy lighthouse which is the eastern most town/point in the US also borders Canada. Property manager was very communicative and we got all we wanted.

Cozy at St Croix river

We have spent 2 beautiful days in this nicely renovated historical house on the bank of St Croix River in Calais Maine. House has rustic feel with all modern utilities. Kitchen is very well stocked. Common areas are very cozy and house is beautifully decorated. Outside area has lot of chairs, table, fireplace and hammock. We have enjoyed sunrise over St Croix River and Gabriela was very pleasant and responsive to any questions..

Lovely home with breathtaking views!

Can’t say enough good things about this house. It was perfect. Every detail was thought through from the abundance of cozy blankets to the cute fireplace heaters in every room. The house was super clean and just perfect. We only had two adults staying a few nights for work travel (pretending it was a girls week lol) but I could see it comfortably fitting lots of people as there was so much space! I wish it was warmer out so I could have taken advantage of the outside spaces. Hope I get to come back!

A Lovely Getaway

My family of 5 met up with my cousin & his family for two nights, and this house was the perfect spot. We had a relaxing time enjoying the house amenities and river view. Our kids did fine playing in the yard while being careful of the drop off. The owner was very responsive to communications. My only criticism is with Vrbo, which failed to send me the check in/out details - I recommended that there be a paper copy in the house for guests without the Vrbo app on their phone like me, which the owner said they would do in the future. Thanks for a nice stay in Calais!

not what we expected

We were excited to rent this property for a family trip. And while there are some nice features - a nice enclosed porch with a pretty view of the river especially at high tide, a fire pit and hammocks outside and beautiful hiking areas within driving distance, our visit was marred by a number of problems. When we arrived we discovered that the place was across the street from a large car dealership that keeps its lights on all night, and worse, had not been well cleaned (e.g. dirty floors, trash and a dirty sock under the couch cushions and couch, a carton of empty egg shells and other food remnants from a prior visitor in the fridge, and a strong cat pee smell in the only full bathroom.) While the host refunded the cleaning fee, the trouble didn't stop there. We soon discovered that the house had an active mouse population that brazenly scurried around the kitchen and got into our food forcing us to keep all edibles in the fridge. We have photos of all of the details mentioned above including the mice. One morning my sister woke to a squirrel on her bed frame. We are not fussy people but this was just too much. To our surprise, when we raised the concerns about rodents with Gabriela she did not respond or offer any discount or assistance despite repeated requests. In the end it left us disappointed both in the house and in the host.

About the host

I love travelling, reading, music, dancing, gardening, hiking, SUP and skiing. I’m blessed to be able to call Ireland and Maine home.

Being able to share my special place, and hearing how much my guest enjoyed their stay is my favorite part of hosting.

Why they chose this property

Calais is a quite, down-to-earth typical American town with 3 border crossings into Canada, & it’s perfectly centered to many other wonderful regions in Maine such as Arcadia, DownEast & Aroostook locally known as The County. There are many trails for hiking and birdwatching, and nearby whale watching and deep sea fishing. But really, just watching the ebb and flow of the St Croix is amazing…so grab a bottle of wine and watch it from RiverHouse 😉

What makes this property unique

The amazing views from every room and outdoor spaces which makes you feel like you’re at a resort.
