About this property

Historic house in Upperville! Wineries, equestrian events, great location!

The Stone house in Upperville, Virginia is a new listing, and a wonderful blend of old stone walls and exposed beams - and modern touches of comfort for today’s living. Perfect for family gatherings and exploring the surrounding countryside, the stone house offers the perfect location to explore wineries, equestrian events and local history!
Built in 1734 and the oldest in the area, the Stone House is said to have been a tavern for travelers (one can still sometimes hear the clop clop of 4-in hand coaches going by), as well as having changed hands multiple times as battlefield headquarters during the Civil War. A truly bi-partisan house! Historic markers across the road and ¼ mile up Trapp road designate the battle of Upperville – soldiers camped in the adjacent creek area near the remains of the Mill.
But it's not just about battles! For the horse enthusiast, the well known Upperville show grounds are within a mile of the Stone House, and home to the Spring and Fall Steeplechase races in addition to the horse shows; Great Meadow is 25 minutes away and has polo every weekend as well as the Gold Cup and varied field events. Rocket launch club anybody? Hiking at nearby Sky Meadow provides amazing views of the valley and the Appalachian trail is also within easy reach. River rafting in Harpers Ferry, and if you like working mills and tiny towns with great lunches and antiques, the village of Millwood is 20 minutes away. Pick your own veggies and fruit areas are plentiful in the area, as are wineries (two within 3 miles and dozens in the area).
So much to see and learn!
Restaurants in Upperville and nearby Middleburg are bustling, but if you prefer local farm to table, The Market at Bluewater Kitchen in the village will stock your fridge on your arrival day and deliver prepared meals if you prefer. Hunter's Head Tavern in the village also offers farm to table meals in a historic setting.
Churches are plentiful in Upperville - Trinity Church in the village was a gift to the Parish by Mr and Mrs Paul Mellon, and is beautiful and welcoming to all visitors. There are two Baptist churches, one in the village and Mt. Pisgah on nearby Delaplane road, and Upperville United Methodist Church. So many churches for a tiny village.
The Stone House is adjacent to The Mill House, listing #1312169.

The perfect girls weekend!

We absolutely loved our stay! We had 10 girls in our late 20s and there was plenty of room for us to all hang out in the common spaces. We enjoyed day at the local vineyards but honestly spent most of our time cozied up in the lovely living room. The house is beautifully maintained and the host is so kind and gracious. Cannot recommend enough!

Historic charm and convenience

We stayed with friends (6 adults) and had an amazing time! The house was still decorated for the holidays which added a wonderful, warm touch for our visit. They've maintained all the charm of a historic house with modern amenities for a perfect stay. Absolutely perfect spot for get together. We'll be returning soon!

Great stay

Rented the house with a group of 6 friends for a December weekend. Place is nicely done, simple, good style. Kitchen is well stocked, the dining and living rooms are bigger than the pictures suggest, and there’s a lot of charm throughout. For a 300 year old house, everything seems to work pretty well - no issues with heating, and plenty of hot water to go around. The town of upperville is tiny, charminf, full of history. We stumbled upon Bunny Mellon’s gravesite behind the beautiful episcopal church down the street! We did the middleburg Christmas parade one day and it was easy to pre book an uber into town, only about 10-15 minutes. Highly recommend the house!

Another fun family trip

We have stayed in another house with the same owner before. She has lovely taste, and the house is comfortable and well-stocked. The kitchen is great to work in. Every description is entirely accurate. I just wish she'd come tweak my house and make it better!

Family Gathering

What an amazing home for a 2-family gathering! We had four couples, one with 2 young children, in town for my daughter’s graduation. We were able to put both sides of the family in one location, which we thought was going to be the big win. Well… the actual win was how the home had both amazing communal spaces, while offering each of the couples (and the family who took the upstairs floor) to have their respective quiet spaces too! The outdoor deck and fire pit were a hit with the adults, while the creek out back, full of crawdads were a favorite of the kids. Shrieks of laughter were had by all as wonderful games of tag ensued in the backyard. I was concerned about the proximity of the house to the road, but the walls were so thick that even the lightest of sleepers in the group were amazed at how quiet it was… We even benefited from having the Upperville Horse and Colt show occurring down the street. All of that would have alone made for a perfect stay, but Candace was such a gracious and communicative host, which took our stay to the next level. Everyone really enjoyed their stay and hope that we host another gathering there soon!

Wonderful stay

Seven high school girlfriends celebrating our 60th year spent a long weekend at the Stone House and it did not disappoint. Plenty of space to spread out and relax. The location was ideal for visiting Middleburg and local hiking trails. The host was very welcoming and quick to respond to question. Would highly recommend this property.

Beautiful Historic Home for Corporate Retreat

We were able to move from room to room and then to the beautiful outdoors as we conducted a leadership retreat for our company. Constance was amazing and made us feel like friends. She recommended trivia night at a local tavern and called ahead so we received a warm welcome. It was a great place!!!!

Coming back!

We enjoyed our stay in this wonderful, historic stone house with spacious, comfortable (really comfortable!) bedrooms. Loved the combination of contemporary, historic, and fun décor. Loved the large dining room opening to a fabulous furnished patio with great views and the convenient, well-lit kitchen. It’s a great place for friends and family to relax and visit in a unique country atmosphere, while also close to historic sites and shopping. We could tell our host had put so much into making this a wonderful place and a wonderful stay. Looking forward to coming back!

Family Thanksgiving

Our stay was awesome! My husband, adult kids & spouses and 2 grandkids spent Thanksgiving here. It was a very special 4 days for us. We all loved the look and feel of this historic home. Each room was special and took you back to the 1700 and 1800s. Constance made upgrades but it was not overly done and preserved the special feel of this home. We all just loved it. The living area was cozy and we spent time just enjoying each other. We went into Middleburg and walked around and also visited a local winery. We also had a local photographer come out and she took some (long over due) pictures of our family down by the creek in front of the house and some the front bedroom. The stone will make for some great photographs. Truly a special place. We definitely hope to be back!

Beautiful homebase for our friends wkd!

We feel so lucky to have found this beautifully restored home for our annual getaway of college friends. The house is gorgeous, with so many historical details and original elements. The kitchen is modern and very functional. The living spaces are comfortable and spacious, including a large deck and backyard. Each bedroom was thoughtfully decorated. We loved the easy convenience to Middleburg, but without all the hustle & bustle. On top of everything, the owner is so kind and generous. Highly recommend!

Lovely Historic Home

Our family of nine enjoyed a weekend getaway at the beautiful Stone House in late October. The house is just as pictured and had everything we needed. The outdoor space is lovely as well. Constance was so kind and helpful with local recommendations before our visit and responded very quickly when we had a small issue during our stay. We would definitely stay at the Stone House again!

Horse country getaway

Just the right mix of historic and modern. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and look forward to coming back next year. Comfortably appointed for a large group. Ample communal relaxing space on the first floor as well as outdoor spaces. The host was very responsive and even went the extra mile to return an item that we left behind. Highly recommend!

Historic and Cozy

Friends and I stayed here during the Middleburg Classic horse show. What a charming historic classic Upperville home. The house is as advertised, an older home with a few quirks but overall it was delightful. Every room has a gorgeous stone fireplace and a comfortable bed. The kitchen is attractive and functional and it has a lovely back deck. Constance was a very attentive and helpful host. We hope to stay here again!
