Exceptional Property for Family Getaway

A beautiful property. The description is accurate, and the location is ideal: A quiet spot no more than 15-30 minutes from at least 4 town centers (in case you need supplies or something to do other than enjoy the property's many amenities). This property is ideal for a multi-generation family gathering. Owner is communicative and very helpful. Owner provides detailed instructions on how things work and she answered our many questions that came up before and even at the beginning of our stay.

excellent place highly recommend it.

Excellent property and facilities. Slightly noisy as on the main road but didnt cause any issues at all for the stay. Swimming pool was fabulous. Small suggestion to include swimming towels that would help to not use the main towels. Everything was clean and in great working condition.

Amazing property for an amazing vacation

The Harmonious Fox is quintessential "county time". Charming century-old home that is beautifully updated with all the necessities of modern life. The property is stunning, and the hikes are memorable. Access to the water is easy and we took the kayaks out on the mirror lake every morning. The pool is an absolute luxury and we used it every day. Our hosts were beyond incredible. Highly recommended for a memorable vacation in PEC.

Week at Harmonious Fox House

Our family of 8 spent a lovely week celebrating two birthdays and a 50th anniversary. The property accommodated us beautifully and we enjoyed visiting the many interesting sites in the environs. Owner Celia Johnstone couldn't have been more helpful. We recommend Harmonious Fox enthusiastically!

Family harmony at the Harmonious Fox

Our family had a great time at the Harmonious Fox. Even with 9 people there was plenty of room for us to be together and to have some space from each other! The house is artfully decorated, while still being extremely comfortable. We especially enjoyed the pool and the walking trails.

No safe lake access

For such an expensive property billing itself as a stunning waterfront house, it is more than disappointing that there was no safe access to the lake. The path to the lake was slippery and mucky, with a fallen tree across the path at one point, and an unsafe set of rickety and uneven wooden steps leading to a narrow opening to the lake. The entire reason for renting this house was to have access to the lake. When contacted, the owners blamed "an act of God" for heavy rains that caused the situation. But they made no effort to contact us in advance, nor have they ever adjusted the wording in their ad to this day. They suggested we could rent kayaks elsewhere, but we could have done that from a house anywhere without paying a premium for being on the "waterfront." We did not follow their logic that it was OK to use the access to the lake anyway because the previous guests had -- I did not wish to risk the safety of the adults and children in our family. We considered leaving after one day, but it was not practical to find a suitable alternative for a party of 12. Very unprofessional to have guests discover such a situation only when arriving at the property. Needless to say, it changed the entire character of our stay, and was a significant and completely unanticipated disappointment. When a major factor in your own property write-up changes, how about letting your guests know in advance?

Splendid... I can't wait to go back!

I had the most amazing week at this marvelous farmhouse. I took long walks along the property every morning and evening, as the scenery was lovely and so very peaceful. And the view from the deck was perfect for watching breathtaking sunsets in the evenings and stargazing at night. Every room inside this beautiful century home had it's own special touch and it was very clean, charming and cozy as well as very spacious. I looked forward to curling up with a good book in the sunroom in the afternoon, watching a movie at night in the living room and waking up to a fresh cup of coffee in the morning after a very comfortable sleep. The pool was the cherry on top of my stay, as it was perfect for cooling off and sunbathing. And this property was only a short drive to a few beautiful local wineries and to Picton, which was a great option for when I wanted to go for a little stroll and check out some quaint shops. I can't wait to go back! - Erin

Beautiful!

Our family stayed for a week this summer in the beautiful Harmonious Fox house. The home is spacious and very well laid out for extended family. Everyone had ample space, and our four kids loved it! The house is extremely clean and filled with games, books and music. The rooms are unique and full of character. The property is also beautiful -- we enjoyed exploring the walking trails and frog pond, and so did our dog. The bugs were not bad at all. There is lots to do nearby -- we visited the local wineries, Sandbanks provincial park and beaches, golfed, Ribfest, the nearby park, and bustling town of Picton with numerous shops and restaurants. Overall, we loved the house and had a wonderful vacation. In addition, a thoughtful bottle of wine upon arrival, and the owners are very kind and prompt with communications. Highly recommend the property....and I believe they are putting in a swimming pool which would be awesome!

Delightful house with beautiful grounds

We stayed here for one week earlier this summer (August 16-23) with my brother's family and our three dogs. As others have commented, the bathrooms associated with each room gave everyone a feeling of having their own self-contained living areas in the house, along with the spacious, well-equipped kitchen and the deck overlooking the garden and the bay (which is where we ate most of our meals - making extensive use of the new Weber barbecue). Probably what we spent most time doing, however, was walking along the trails through the woods associated with the property, which were serenely beautiful and much enjoyed by the dogs, who I think would have liked to stay forever. Although the house is quite secluded, small towns, wineries, cider manufacturers, cheese factories, restaurants and the Sandbanks resort are all within easy driving distance. My brother, who is an avid cyclist, also enjoyed the rolling and mostly traffic-free country roads, which made for great cycling trips. A wonderful place to unwind!

A superbly crafted, artistic and spacious house in an idyllic setting.

I stayed for one week (June 30 to July 6 2015) with my wife our 3 teenage boys and our dog. The house was in superb condition and the owners even provided us with an excellent red wine as a friendly greeting. While the access to the water was ankle wet near the water we had come prepared thanks to previous occupant reviews and it was not a problem. We all enjoyed the kayaking and the dog had a delightful time doing some swimming. The grounds are extensive and well maintained with several long trails that were great for nature walks with our dog . The deck off the kitchen is quite large and suitable for relaxing and enjoying the water view and the bird and butterfly activity. In a previous review it was noted that the road (route 15) was not suitable for biking for younger children. There is a quiet country road, however, that connects to 15 in front of the house that is very quiet and one of our boys who is a runner would do his daily 5 mile run on this road and seldom encountered a vehicle. The bedrooms and baths are spacious and in excellent condition and each boy liked his bedroom. The entertainment areas are also spacious and comfortable. The TV room is large and there is also another large non-TV area that can be closed off from the TV room for other activities. Additionally, there are 2 game room areas for active play. The WiFi worked flawlessly so we all kept up with are internet activity. The large pleasing indoor spaces and available activities make even a wet day enjoyable. Our 3 boys are all athletic so they were pleased to have the excellent fitness center in Picton available. Getting around the area to restaurants , Sand banks beach , wineries, coffee and snack shops etc. is no big deal in that the traffic is very light. A nice feature of Sand banks beach is that it has a beach areas open to dogs so it is a great spot for dogs and their owners. All in all this is a great place to vacation and we are all eager for a return visit.

Delightful, Comfortable and Spacious Home and Property

Three generations of our family (parents, adult children and young grandchildren) greatly enjoyed our week long get together at this comfortable and spacious home. The house layout allowed separation for each family when needed but ample gathering space for everything else. The house was beautifully clean and comfortable; bathrooms associated with each room plus a powder room were particularly appreciated; the kitchen was modern with a large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, stove and so well equipped with dishes, glasses, pots, pans, casseroles, serving dishes cutlery and utensils (we have rented in many locations and this kitchen was among the best we have encountered). Because we had young children in the group we did not eat out much, so the wonderful kitchen, large dining table and barbeque and large table on the deck was much used. The garden area was a delightful place for us to relax; the little ones had room to play and the frog pond was a big hit; the bird feeders which attracted a variety of wildlife - chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and especially the birds - was also a big hit with the adults and children alike and we even managed a kayak outing or two (we had brought life jackets but there was an ample supply). We did venture away from the house too! The children very much enjoyed visits to the parks/playgrounds in Northpoint and Picton, the beach, and pick your own strawberries was a huge success -and eating the fruit even better! Adults also enjoyed visiting wineries and lavender farm; younger adults were excited to find a favourite Newfoundland band playing in the Picton theatre during our stay. Thank you for facilitating our special family gathering; we did so enjoy this lovely setting.

Ideal retreat

Our book club group of eight women had a wonderful few days at this beautiful house. We were amazed at the spaciousness, and were especially delighted to find that there were enough beds that none of us had to share. The house has eclectic and interesting furnishings, very comfortable beds, and was spotlessly clean. Although it has two large living rooms, we seemed to spend most of our time on the deck or in the large sunny kitchen/dining room. After a day spent visiting the wineries, lunching at some of the excellent local restaurants, and exploring and browsing through shops in the nearby towns and villages, it was always a pleasure to come back in the evening to relax around the large dining table with wine, cheese, and simple meals. The kitchen is amply equipped, and we christened a new bbq. The grounds are lovely, and some of us took advantage of the kayaks in the mornings to explore the Bay, where we were lucky enough to get close to a pair of swans and their five young cygnets. There is a large selection of music to suit many tastes, and lots of games. All in all an excellent spot for a relaxing getaway.

An Oasis!

What a wonderful vacation our family had at this lovely farmhouse. The country setting and beautifully decorated farmhouse made for a much needed relaxing and restful week, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We enjoyed cooking in the bright and spacious eat-in kitchen, overlooking the Bay; and the abundance of fresh vegetables from the garden was a nice surprise. Each evening we enjoyed sipping wine (that we acquired from one of the local wineries) on the large deck at the back of the farmhouse overlooking the Bay, while watching the sunset and listening to one of the many CDs that were available. On a cool day we enjoyed visiting the nearby quaint town of Picton for some great shopping and to grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or cafes. There was plenty to do inside by either playing cards, board games, puzzles, ping pong, foosball, or cozying up with a good book (everything was provided!). The satellite TV was an added bonus to be able to watch a movie or two each evening. There is something for everyone at this attractive and large but very cozy farmhouse but for us, we mostly enjoyed being with family and reconnecting. Our dog Meeshka especially enjoyed being able to run freely on this large piece of property. Thank you for sharing this wonderful farmhouse with others! We definitely hope to return.

Great family getaway and my children didn't want to leave!

This house is wonderful! It is absolutely huge, spacious and a very well manicured property. I see the review below concerned about it not being good for small children but mine had a blast.(5 and 4 years old) We stayed with two families, two children each and there was room for another! The house is very well equipped for dining, entertainment, and enjoying the outdoors. The property is well taken care for, nature trails leading to a small pond as well as swimming in the bay. The bed of the bay is a little soft but you don't sink, if the feeling of it bothers you aqua shoes from Canadian Tire will make it pleasant for you. The water is no more than 3' deep, warm and very calm so swimming kayaking and SUPing(i brought my own SUP) was delightful. The yard is huge for soccer, volleyball, boccie ball and general play can all be done at once with space to spare. The area is beautiful, very scenic. Wed did have vehicles and we went into town for a little shopping and ice cream. Wonderful community. The Sandbanks is also very close and a wonderful beach area. Tip, park by the store, easiest walk to the beach and less busy. Close to the house is a great park for the kids and areas to fish(we try to stay away from swimming areas and we caught countless Perch, Bluegills, Rock Bass, and Pumpkinseed. In the evenings the deck is very private and there are two living rooms to unwind in. Noise didn't carry upstairs to the bedrooms although I don't think it mattered. There is so much to do in the area I think the fresh air and activity was enough for the kids to fall asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows. And don't worry about rainy days, the house is equipped with board games, Foosball, Ping Pong and satellite TV. now that I think of it hide and seek would have been a blast too! Luckily we had great weather but if you like to wake up slowly with a coffee foosball and ping pong was enough to keep the kids busy as long as you need. All in all we got all the R&R we needed that week. The only sad part is it's over too soon.

Lovely & Spacious!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home. It is lovely and spacious with many updated features. Tastefully decorated, clean and we enjoyed the breeze coming in the open windows throughout the house. Fresh brewed coffee in the early morning...so peaceful on the deck while watching the birds travel from tree to tree. Picton and Sandbanks, wineries are just a few options enjoyed. Preparing dinner in the spacious kitchen and an opportunity to enjoy sunsets were relaxing. Reading, games and movies made for great family evenings without our laptops...what a concept! Thoroughly enjoyed our vacation!

A great few days.

We stayed at the Foxhouse with our two children. We loved everything. The kids really enjoyed the various activities including the table tennis, table football, volleyball and kayaking. We swam in the bay from the property every day. The water is warm and clear. The access is from a grassy bank. The first 6 feet or so was quite muddy but then it becomes sandy. We all spent time at the pond which is teeming with wildlife including fish, frogs and some amazing dragonflies. We picked fresh veggies from the vegetable gardens. The beans and tomatoes were delicious! The house itself is “stunning” as are the gardens and the views. The owners were accessible and quick to respond to any questions we had. I would recommend this property to anyone who really loves the countryside. This is not your typical cottage on a lake. It is a very large old farmhouse with loads of land to explore. It does not have a sandy beach. It isn’t described as having one. We got our fix of sandy beaches at nearby Sandbanks. The house is very comfortable and well equipped with all mod cons. We can’t wait to go back! An all-round great family vacation.

A wonderful second visit!

We love to travel and have rented many properties throughout cottage country, Prince Edward County, Italy, France, Amsterdam and Hudson Valley! We look for modern amenities mixed with charm and local fare. The first time my husband and I came to this more beautiful, quaint and inspiring home, we fell in love! From the well-stocked kitchen, the beautiful views, the comfy bedrooms and all the local and on-property things to do this is a perfect location to stay in Prince Edward County. This second time I brought my team for a brainstorming and educational session. We used the living room for our keynote speaker, the large kitchen table for team meals and the beautiful outdoor area for a brainstorming! With five bathrooms and many beds, each team member, all women, were very comfortable. One afternoon we toured the area wineries, kayaked right off the property, meandered through the beautiful, movie worthy path to the water and swam in the sandy water! We look forward to returning soon!

6/10 Okay

Not a good location for young children!

Beautiful, relaxing home as advertised BUT no beach (due to high water we were told) and bottom is mucky and weedy - not sandy. Very disappointing for our granddaughter! The home is on a very busy road with all manner of vehicles travelling at significant speeds. Many window screens missing! Beautiful breezes come off the bay but we were unable to open a number of windows leading to a few hot, stuffy rooms. You can only open one window in the main floor bedroom so it was unbearable some nights. Seeing the pictures of the frog pond and meadow when searching for a family vacation site, I expected our grandchildren would enjoy the property. Unfortunately, the property is so marshy the mosquitoes are thriving. One visit to the pond area convinced everyone in our party to stay far away from there. When on holidays, I like to relax with the newspaper online in the mornings before anyone else is awake. After warning emails from the property owners before our arrival about a previous occupant getting a very large internet bill, we were nervous to do anything online beyond checking for emails. Quite surprising to have such a limitation.

Peaceful Place

My husband and I stayed at the Fox house, this is our 3rd visit. We love this place. Such openness and clean air which made us very relaxed. This was definitely what we were looking for as a nice getaway from city life. Just the two of us so we used the main floor. I love how they opened up the west wing. Looks like there is so much more room. It's great if you take your whole clan for any events! For us October is a great time to be there because we get to use the pot belly :) It makes for cozy evenings with the fire going after any kind of activity you had during the day. Yes, we will definitely come again and recommend to our friends and family! I'd like to say to the owner, thank-you so much giving us this opportunity. You have done such a wonderful job with your property!

Wonderful Spacious Home

We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely holiday house! Our entire family ( 12) had a marvelous time. The house is so spacious and well equipped. Everything was available from games to sports equipment to a really well equipped kitchen. We were all able to find spots to play and relax in this spacious home! We put food in the bird feeder and really enjoyed the cardinals , blue jays and all the small birds as well as the red squirrels who are very bold and had their share too. The fireflies were out in force at night and provided a lot of entertainment for the little kids! The area towns in Prince Edward County are very nice too. Try Slickers for ice cream in Bloomfield and browse through the shops along main street. In Wellington there is a super kids park on main street with access to the water and a great play structure and picnic tables . Picton has great shopping for almost everything. All in all we had a great stay

We all had a great time

This was an excellent location for our 6 Adults, 2 children and 2 small dogs. We were able to relax, play volleyball, BBQ, burn marshmallows visit Sandbanks, Wineries and see the whole of PEC with ease. We loved the fresh fruit and veg ready for picking each morning. The accommodation was exactly as promised and despite challenging wireless connection and even though the Owners were just as far away from the internet somewhere in Italy all queries were rapidly resolved. We would certainly come again.

Perfect family vacation!

The perfect holiday - if you are looking to stay in a century old (and well maintained) home on peaceful waters and country roads, if you are want to remember what the stars look like at night, if you want to hear the birds sing, if you want an afternoon or two of winery hopping, if you want access to kayaks and quiet roads for biking/walking, and if you want to rent from helpful owners. A few perks: large rooms, a comfortable setting, fully equipped kitchen, and a beautiful yard with a nice short trail to the water. Unusual perk: a very nice home that welcomes dogs! Our family of 6 greatly enjoyed our week - we left well rested with fabulous memories. We highly recommend this place!
