Perfect for us to explore a new spot in the Bay Area. Have family in Alameda so visit often. This cottage is close to nice parks and convenient for access to other Bay Area adventures.
Comfortable and very welcoming place to stay! Tom was so friendly and very accommodating of some special requests. The parking was a little bit tricky but nothing impossible.
The only drawback of this place is that parking on the lane, if you have to carry luggage etc, is impossible, as there is no place to turn around without executing a 12-point turn. So I park on the main street and walk up. The positives are: beautiful sunny room in the morning with a view 'out' over Oakland, closeness to Roberts Regional and other fabulous redwood/sequoia groves and Chabot Science center, relative convenience, close to main roads and arteries. Very considerate hosts--they try to anticipate your needs. And if you need some animal therapy, there are designer chickens in the backyard.
Tom’s Cottage by the Lane was truly a delight to stay in for our Anniversary Weekend Vacation. Close enough to Downtown Oakland and across the bridges to San Francisco. The cottage is actually right down the street from the 2nd largest Mormon Temple in the nation, so seeing the beacon of light on the mountainside was always refreshing knowing that our cottage was right down the street.
The home has so much charm and coziness, it was hard to leave to go out and sight see for the days that we were there.
The kitchen is fully equipped, and we made use of it for dinners and breakfasts especially since the windows (and there are many) open to let in the cool morning breeze and give us views of the bay. The dining/ living area was the perfect spot to read and take in the lack of noise.
The directions to the home were accurate, and yes, every time we left the home, we had to reverse down the lane; traffic was scarce because of this.
Communication was lovely through the app and Tom’s binder was very helpful throughout our stay.
Should we visit San Francisco again, it’ll be the Cottage by the Lane we’ll want to book!
Loved the little bunkhouse in Oakland, we had everything we needed! The place was very clean and cozy. No TV, but we didn't miss it anyway. Parking was convenient but backing out of the narrow dead end driveway was a nightmare. That was really the only downside to an otherwise picture perfect stay. Oh, and the chicken coop is adorable and is easily the most fun we had at a bnb in a long time!
More than a cottage. Plenty of room. Nice yard, with chickens in their enclosure. Very quiet, though in a de sely populated neighborhood. No A/C, but not really needed in the cool Bay Area weather.
What a find! This cute multi-room cottage is in Oakland, but has a rural feel, surrounded by trees and with a few well-behaved and entertaining chickens off the screened-in porch. It's just a few miles from Joaquin Miller Park, with an abundance of walking trails. The host is super friendly and helpful. We loved our stay and would stay here again when in the East Bay.
The guest cottage is even better than the VRBO descriptive explains...very quaint, everything you could need, wonderful sunlight in the mornings, a lovely porch with chickens doing short serenades...did you know that the Pazzis were foiled from assassinating the Medici out in the country by chickens? That is why you will see chicken shaped pitchers, seriously. So, very safe! Very quiet! And close to the park and those lovely redwood trees--the 12 apostles, the Faery Ring. Easy to get everywhere around SF and Oakland from here. YAY!
I stayed in Oakland for work, and wanted a day to just explore the city. I stayed at Tom's place and it was great. The house itself is very cute, and had all that i needed. I was able to get in and out of the house with ease, and the garden and the chickens on the property were a lovely part of the experience as well. The neighborhood is very nice, with absolutely stunning gardens! I walked to a nearby coffee shop (Mokha ~ *highly* recommend!) and had a delightful time looking at all of the plantings. The only issue was that sometimes the Uber/Lyft drivers really struggled to get out of the one way street that the house was on. But that is not anything to do with the house or the host. I would recommend this place for sure!
Comfortable and spacious cottage, perfect for us during our visit to family nearby. Quiet location. Comfortable bed.

About the host
Hosted by Tom Branca
I first came to California after serving in Vietnam and being discharged at Treasure Island. as my ship was here on/off over the course of 4 years I came to really enjoy this part of the country. b decided to stay instead of heading back to the Bronx. Went to school and graduated UCBerkeley, then UC Davis and found a job teaching Horticulture at Merritt College. Many years later I'm retired and enjoying hosting folks as well as caring for my garden and chickens. Cooking everything we grow is also a passion of mine while trying to teach both my teenagers to enjoy a variety of foods.
Why they chose this property
This is a very quiet residential neighborhood. I was primarily drawn to the property because it had lots of room to garden as well as having a small cottage on site. Being on a dead end narrow lane also provides safety and security while posing a challenge for those who are intimidated by backing up! After a few tries everyone seems to be able to manage.
What makes this property unique
Safe, secure, hidden from the larger street as it looks like someone's driveway. Look out any window and you are not looking into someone else's house.
