Peaceful Cottage with amazing sunset views!

We had a fantastic week with our family- cottage had plenty of room for our group of 8 adults and 2 infant/toddlers - All the beds were comfortable and the kitchen is very well equipped for your needs including 10 place settings of cute sailboat/lake themed china. We used the dock & boat lift for our rented pontoon as well as kayaking and paddle boarding but most of all the amazing sunset and early morning enjoyment of the lake. Our grandson really appreciated the nice clean sandbox to play in too! Thank you Scott for a lovely week at your family retreat.

Family Vacation at Green Lake

Great location. Scott very helpful with unloading and loading. Plenty to do for everyone in the family. Older home, but lots of room, good kitchen, plenty of storage and wonderful views. Also very comfortable without the a/c on. Good sleeping.

Very quaint, spacious, quiet place. Furniture needs to be updated.

The house is spacious, however the kitchen is small for a large group. The master bedroom could use a toilet topper, as there is very limited space for items. Some of the aged furniture should be updated, and the living room furniture should be rearranged with the tv near the fireplace, for better viewing by more quests. The full size mattresses should be replaced. The fire pit and patio area are nice, however there was not a large enough level lawn area for yard games. The pier is nice and renting the boat lift is highly recommended. There is ample parking for 4 vehicles & 1 boat trailer, however the area to maneuver to get the trailer in the proper area was challenging. Guests were not pleased about the distance to haul everything from the parking area to the house. Hauling is across a grassy downward sloped area, cement & wood stairs. Having a paved area down to the house, for unloading at arrival & loading at departure would help tremedously. The owners are close by to assist with any needs that arise, and quickly resolved any issues.

Perfect Little Piece of Paradise

The House... Large, spacious, and clean. The kitchen is fully stocked for any of your cooking needs. There are plenty of towels and a washer and dryer to use. There are many tables and chairs to sit at and play games, do puzzles, or have a meal. We were especially happy that the home had an entire wall of windows looking out onto the lake. The property is well taken care of, both inside and out. Full wi-fi to post those sunset pics onto Facebook, and MULTIPLE bathrooms. *This has been an issue we constantly deal with and one bathroom with multiple full grown men is an absolute no-go for us. :) AC worked well, and the kids LOVED the sandpit and kayak. The dock goes far out, with about a 6' depth at the end. It included ladders as well so if you felt the need to jump in, no problem! Area Surrounding... The home itself sits on a private drive with a few other houses. The owner lives 2 houses down so is around often keeping your place cleaned up. There are restaurants within 10 minutes and plenty of pretty farms to look at. We were especially happy eating at Reilly's (good food, full menu, and plenty of outdoor seating with views of the lake) and the Little Corporal for breakfast (family run diner, but packs up so get there early and order the crab cake eggs benedict!) The lake is beautiful and large. We even rented a pontoon boat to go swimming and look at the gorgeous houses. Neighbors are very friendly and will probably offer you a cocktail if you smile at them. Owner... Bob is very sweet and lives just 2 houses down. He doesn't ask for them, but he likes hugs. He walks over often to check in on you and will continuously take care of the yard. He was very easy going and likes to chat. He knows lots of history about the house and the area surrounding it. He was very accomodating as well, offering a late check out for us. Further, he stayed in contact via text message to make sure we were satisfied with our trip. Overall... This house can't be missed. It's a genuinely great piece of property. Quiet, comfortable, spacious, and AMAZING views. We were very happy!

Great Family Getaway

Bob was a lovely host. He was responsive to my inquiries prior to booking and was there to assist when we needed him. There were some hiccups with the malfunctioning dishwasher and boat lift, but we sorted most everything out. We really appreciated his assistance with moving our bags and supplies to the parking area from the house because the parking was up the hill from where we were staying. The location of the parking was not a surprise because I'd read other reviews. There were more than enough seating/chairs in the spacious living room to accommodate our party of 8 adults and 1 toddler, plus 1 small dog. The fire pit was lovely and the sandbox was a huge hit. The abundant supply of wood to burn was so appreciated. We enjoyed the kayaks and the stunning lake views. Having a gas grill available to us was absolutely perfect. We did struggle a bit with the cookware inside (everything got stuck no matter what we tried and there were 4 seasoned cooks in the household!). If possible, I recommend possibly investing in nonstick cookware for future guests. Overall, we did enjoy our stay. There were plenty of towels, sheets, and blankets. Bob made sure we were comfortable. The AC worked well when we were all inside with the doors shut and people weren't constantly running in and out. The fact that there were two full bathrooms made it easier to fit all of us comfortably. We recommend Bob's home for your stay on Green Lake.

Truly a Hidden Treasure

Bob and his wife were amazing host! Always available if a question arises. The property, where to begin. The house view overlooking the lake was breathtaking, morning coffee views were amazing. The place has all the essentials from a full kitchen down to having all the required things to grill or for the fire pit overlooking the lake (which we didn’t use this time but definitely will next time). The house is big, cozy, and clean. I could go on and on…but I will end with this, the property is a hidden treasure and can’t wait to return. Thank you again Bob for sharing your house with us we had a wonderful time.

Great Trip to Green Lake

We had a wonderful stay at the Hidden Treasure. Bob had everything we could need, from canoes, To fire-starters for the fire pit to a nice gas grill or charcoal. It seemed like everything was thought of and we did not need to pack near what we did. The home was clean. We loved the big table to eat at and the fire pit area in the evening. We will definetly be back!

Another Great Stay in Green Lake!

Bob was great, very helpful! Property was awesome. We loved the great/dining room and we could all sit and eat together at the large table. Was also great for evenings of games where some were at the table playing while others sat in the connecting livivng room doing other things. View of the lake amazing, swimming really good. Would recommend this place for any type of gathering.

Only complaint- no fish!

We spent the week at the house with our 2 teenage boys and had a fantastic time. We wanted to keep isolated and safe, and the property had everything we needed to hang out and relax, but also a lot to Lee us busy. Bob was a fantastic host, very responsive. The property has been in his family for generations and you can tell he and his wife take a lot of pride in it. Water was beautiful, but very rocky so don’t expect a nice sandy place to play. Overall we had a great time and highly recommend it.

Great Green Lake Vacation stay

The property was as advertised. Parking for 4 vehicles plus a boat trailer. Plenty of space. One couple did not like their mattress; one of the living room chairs was uncomfortable. Everything else was great. Our party of 10 didn't use all of the seating that was available in the house. Great fire pit and sand box area overlooking the lake--firewood and charcoal/lighter fluid were provided. There is a path from the parking area down to the house. Bob was great in assisting with check in and check out, and transported our luggage, etc. with his golf cart. Bob is a delightful owner and lives nearby and was attentive to anything you would need. We used the boat lift for a 19 1/2 foot Tracker I/O. Great feature as the lake can get wavy. The dock was great and has a bench. Best fishing was literally off the dock (bass). Didn't fish for trout but saw many schools of them in about 65 feet of water. Could not find the sunfish. Enjoyed cruising the lake and boating to the restaurants. Great days at the Dodge County beach; also hiked the conservancy prairie just up the road; also hiked John Muir county park trail around Ennis Lake near Portage. Had lunch at the Shark Shack which was great. Had Friday fish fry at Nortons which was only average. Go to Nortons for something besides fish fry as it is the nicest and $$ restaurant in the area. We also had pizza one night at Christianos which we found disappointing, compared to when we dined there when we lived in the area. Weather was perfect for the whole week. Weekdays were quiet on the lake as far as other boaters. Could not have been a better vacation. Six adults; four kids ages 8, 6, 4, and 6 months. Thanks, Bob.

Enjoyable family vacation!

We enjoyed our first Green Lake vacation! The cottage was accurately pictured and described on VRBO...no surprises. Bob met us upon arrival and helped with unloading. The cottage had plenty of space for my family (husband, 4 and 6 year old), my parents and my 2 sisters. We enjoyed the lake views from the house, and floating and fishing off the pier. We rented a “Maui Mat” from Action Marina and used Bob’s tandem kayak for morning paddles. We all had fun!

lake home

The lake was beautiful... We had a good family vacation. Swimming , fishing , camp fires and beautiful sunsets. There was a problem with having a boat docked to the owners pier. Owner insisted you have to use the boat lift with an additional fee of $175 per week or take your boat out of the water every night !

Charming and comfortable

I think the previous reviews did a thorough job covering almost everything and the home is very much as pictured. My husband, 3 teen age+ sons, and mother-in-law stayed for 4 nights, Mon-Thursday in early June. It was an especially peaceful time being mid week. We too enjoyed the full view of the lake from all the back windows and appreciated how well Bob and his wife stocked the home beyond the essentials, including various sized pots, marshmallow roasting utensils, matches, kitchen, bath, and cleaning supplies, etc.! The house had more than enough space for the 6 of us; but was still happy to have 2.5 BA. The yard is beautiful and has ample shade and sunshine. Our activities included mostly watersports, i.e., wake boarding, wake surfing, tubing, and endless fishing for our oldest son, Ben. Ben fished from the end of the pier with an additional pole he borrowed from Bob. He was happier than a little boy on Xmas morning reeling in some of the biggest bass he’s ever caught. For the other activities, we rented a boat and equipment through Action Marina and were extremely pleased with them as well. Most importantly, Bob and his wife were amazing hosts. They treated us like family greeting us upon arrival, were extremely responsive via text, and caring about all the little details, as they really wanted to ensure that we were happy. It poured the morning we left and I’m afraid we rushed out to catch our flight back to CA and I missed that hug. Next time!

Great summer lake house

Just stayed here for 3 nights/4 days with my family consisting of 6 adults, 1 toddler, and 1 small dog. We had a wonderful time - The home is amazing - you can't beat the views from the picturesque windows that span the entire width of the home overlooking the lake. It really makes you feel you are on vacation when you have views from almost any angle like that. The home is very spacious - the shared living area was very roomy with tons of comfortable seating - the way it's arranged feels like it's naturally divided into different areas like dining, enjoying the view, conversing, watching tv, etc. The dining table is huge with seating for 10 which was great. The 4 bedrooms offered more than enough sleeping space for us. The master is the most updated, spacious and nice with lake views and it's own bathroom. No issues fitting a pack n play. The other 3 bedrooms are more standard. The main bathroom is spacious and the upstairs half bath is adequate. The kitchen has most of what you would need to prepare and cook your own meals, and the appliances all worked fine. Outside was very nice as well. Multiple seating areas to enjoy the view, including a fire pit area. The back has patio furniture and a charcoal grill. Note: both the back and front of the home might be a bit cumbersome if you have very young children or anyone with any difficulty managing uneven terrain. The ground slopes and only some railings to hold onto. The pier was great - the bench at the end could fit 3-4 people easily and the end of the pier was extra large so you felt pretty safe fishing off of it. If you plan on renting a boat, the rental company will request you use a boat lift (this home has one you can rent if it's available). Lastly, the customer service was above and beyond. Bob was super friendly and courteous. He checked in on us numerous times to make sure everything was ok, and made sure we had everything we needed. He even came by to make sure we had flashlights the night a storm was rolling in in case the power went out. He gave us an interesting history lesson on the home as well. You can tell he and his family take pride in it and want the best experience for the people who stay there. He was very accessible just being a few houses down if you needed to get a hold of him for any reason. We also met the neighbor to the right of the home, again extremely nice and friendly. I would recommend this home to family types who want a relaxing stay.

About the host

Hosted by Scott Taylor

Host profile image
We are the primary caretakers of this family owned home and have realized our goal to live at Green Lake. We have retired from teaching and providing computer services. With help from our son and daughter-in-law we are privileged to maintain this property. It is a hands-on project, and satisfaction comes from comments from our renters - 'comfortable and clean'. Although we don't live in the cottage, we are close enough to help if needed but not to interfere.

Why they chose this property

This is a home that has been in our family since the early 1900s. The original vacation home on this land was the historic 'Windmill Cottage' - a cottage with a working windmill atop a three story structure. That building has been replaced by our four bedroom home 'Hidden Treasure.' It has been a summer place for our family since the 1950s. It has provided many fond memories for us and we hope that your time spent here be the highlight of your summer experiences.

What makes this property unique

We love being near the water and the scenic beauty of the lake, but we also enjoy the rich variety of wildlife which come to our yard - song birds, water fowl, wild turkeys, and deer.

Early mornings are special times when we enjoy a steaming cup of coffee on the pier and watch the mist rise off the still waters of Green Lake.
