Unique experience

We chose this property due to the seclusion, closeness to nature and outstanding reviews and we were not disappointed. The property is surrounded by the Gila Wilderness and is SPECTACULAR! There are many trails but unfortunately they can be overgrown with brush in places and they are rocky and not easy walking. The house itself is large, open ,comfortable and bright with windows on almost every wall plus doors leading outside to decks and patios. We found all the amenities we needed and were very comfortable. The owner, Bruce, and manager, Laura (and Charlie), were helpful and friendly. We had one instance where the power in that entire area was out from 5:30 PM to 1:00 AM the next morning. We started a fire in the fireplace and had a most romantic and lovely evening. We were there for a month and the house really felt like home when we left. We miss the Pinon Jays and Cliff Chipmunks that came to the master bedroom deck every morning! You are also close to the Continental Divide Trail and the historic little town of Pinos Altos. Try the Buckhorn Saloon there! Remember that this town was a huge Gold (and other mineral) mining town in the 1860s and was attacked by a large band if Apaches which included Cochese and Mangas Coloradas. Very historic. You’re about 20 minutes north of Silver City and about 4 miles north of Pinos Altos. There is a modern Walmart Super Center in Silver City. Be aware the road north of Pinos Altos is narrow/twisty with no guard rails.

Red Paint Pow Wow

I liked the house location and the setting on how it’s placed on the side of the mountain. The reading material was very impressive as well as the collection of furniture. I did notice some of the outside artwork was broken and has not been repaired for awhile. I had trouble with the heat settings in the house as well. Either I could not get the place to warm up or it got too warm and we had to open the doors. However, I know I had a problem understand how to use there heat system since it is not something I am familiar with. The dishes did have to be rinsed out before using them as they were not washed right. Over all everything was nice. If I can suggest something is to have a regular maintenance man and inspection of housekeeping. Oh! And I do know there was a mountain cat around we could hear it at night! That was very exciting!

Beautiful home in peaceful location.

This is a beautiful home tucked into a hillside about 2 miles north of pinos altos. The location is quiet and peaceful. You hear nothing but the breeze in the trees. The home itself is beautiful, comfortable and spacious. We loved the original art, the book collection, and especially the very cool mid-century modern design aesthetic. We also enjoyed walking (and scrambling) around on the cairned routes that the owners have marked out on their large property. Very much looking forward to visiting again.

Great home away from home!

A wonderful home in a quiet and peaceful area of the forest away from all the noise of the city! We had a great time checking out all the natural sites in the area and enjoyed coming home to a great place with all the features you would ever want in a vacation home! Thanks for the peace and quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

House Near Gila National Forest

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the house just outside Silver City with the covered deck among the rocks and trees. There is one house next door, but it is far enough away for privacy. The street below conveniently takes you to the Gila Cliff Dwellings and Lake Roberts in one direction and Silver City in the other. The house was comfortable with great artwork/decor and lighting, thick towels, and very clean but could have used a greater variety of dishware and some niceties like luggage racks and a screen door for the front door (like the deck door), so we could open it for air/nature sounds without the bugs getting in. The showers and the swamp coolers worked well; it was warm enough that we didn't test the heat. Live TV was hit and miss, but Smart TV worked fine. Our cell service and texting was dependent on the service provider - one phone worked, and the other didn't. The laundry center (including basket) was very appreciated, as we didn't have to pack as much on our trip. It would have been nice if there was a way to recycle at the house, and have the housekeeper bring the items into town. Early during our stay, the well water abruptly shut off. Laura the manager and Bruce the owner acted immediately, getting us temporary water while the well tank was refilled and then evaluated for a potential pump failure. The issue was resolved in just a few hours. Overall, we had a fun and relaxing time and recommend this wilderness home in Pinos Altos to all.

Amazing Hidden Gem

Had a fabulous stay! Laura was an amazing host with excellent communication. So hard to believe that this can feel so private and secluded when just up the road from Silver City. Amazing house with room for many... Lots of room to stretch out in an amazing location. Absolutely cannot express how much we enjoyed our stay! We will absolutely be back at next opportunity.

Beautiful

Online photos do not show the views from this home, which are beautiful. Nothing but nature out of every window. There are multiple patios and decks. Each bedroom has a door out to a patio. The main deck is off the great room. Home is nestled into hillside with massive boulders. Very striking. Super quiet, peaceful, relaxing, and clean. Everything about the home is comfortable - layout, beds, furniture. Furnishings are not new, but they are solid and of high quality. Our teenage son was happy that cell and internet service was strong and reliable. Gorgeous hikes that we could start right from the house. Windows in home are in abundance and are large fixed glass with smaller casement rollouts below. With those open, we didn't tend to get a great cross breeze for our mid-October visit, so if a warmer time of year, I could see things heating up inside and needing to crank down the A/C. Main floor is on the top floor, reached by exterior or interior stairs, and includes living/dining/kitchen/primary bedroom & bath. The primary bedroom has a very large private double vanity and shower, but shares a separate powder bath (toilet and sink) with great room. The downstairs (walkout to driveway) has a second master bedroom with attached private bath & jacuzzi, office with a single bed, powder bath near office, and a game room with a ping pong table. Loved the place and would definitely go back!

Pinos altos cabin

Wonderful home in the hills very quiet with hiking trails just out the door. Hiking the “agave garden” was a little rough in places requiring some bush walking, but the 4 mile trail right next to driveway entrance is fabulous.

Super Nice

Agave House is a destination within itself. My wife and I rented it as a romantic getaway, and it did not disappoint. The agave were in full bloom during our stay, and all I can say is, "Wow!" I was not expecting to see 30 ft tall agave lit up in bright yellows and reds. The property had tons of them - a forest of agave. The house is really comfortable and nice, and is in a beautiful spot. Nestled into a cliff rock formation, there are views in every direction. Every side of the house has a porch, so as the sun moves there's always a place to sit and enjoy the outside. If you want privacy, then this is the place. Quiet. Peaceful. The house has eclectic art and everything we needed to be comfortable and relaxed. The property itself has hiking trails and they have a map to follow along with cairns marking the trail. Hard to follow and overgrown - we had to backtrack numerous times because it was overgrown and rugged - but with a little exploring, we hiked most of the trails successfuly. Mountainous, rocky, forested and filled with agave. Killer views and rock formations. Cool hiking without ever leaving the property. We did explore Silver City which is 20 min down the hill. A lot hotter down there. We enjoyed a sunset/moonlight horseback riding with Wolfhorse Outfitters, and explored all the thrift stores and art galleries. Not a lot going on in town and it's a bit economically depressed, but Agave House is worth going to all by itself. Did I mention the Agave were "Wow!!!"

Tucked away but close to town

We really enjoyed this tucked away house. Uniquely build around its natural setting of rocks and trees. The dogs and I really loved exploring the large property and the creek running on the edge of the property line. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans but even other things that are not usually found in vacations home, such as foil, coffee filters, some spices, etc. We had some issues with the coffee pot only running half of the water but we just turned it on and off then it would use the rest. Love how the house has so many outdoor patios but we mostly used the one off of the kitchen. A nice place to have morning coffee or watch the monsoon clouds rolling in. I stayed in the bedroom off of the kitchen. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very clean. The shower is HUGE. My friend stayed downstairs bedroom with the attached bathroom. The downstairs had a bit of a musty smell to it but once he opened the windows it was much better. Again the rooms were clean and well appointed. His only complaint was about the bed. It's two twin beds pushed together which is not as comfortable. The house is full of interesting artwork and furniture. The location allowed us to easily drive to Silver City, Cliff Dwelling National Park, and the Catwalk Recreation Area. All worth a visit. We were blown away by how good the food was at Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House in Pinos Altos. Both Pinos Altos and Silver City have some very interesting history. Plus great little shops and galleries in Silver City made for a fun day trip. I would highly recommend staying here.

About the host

Hosted by Laura

Host profile image
The owner, Bruce, was a factory worker, logger, newspaper reporter, PR flunkie, and unpublished fiction writer before he discovered computers and lost all interest in reality. He spent 12 years in a computer fog, but gave it all up to move to the Silver City area in 1999. He is now in recovery, but does find time to manage an office building and a few other business projects in town.

Why they chose this property

Bruce lived in this beautiful house for five years before turning it into a vacation rental. If you don't book it, he probably will. It's a sacred place that he likes to share with others.

What makes this property unique

Beyond us are only a couple of tiny communities and a hundred miles of wilderness. In this secluded environment, you can hear the diverse sounds of many different varieties of birds, view the Milky Way amidst the dark, starry night skies, watch breath-taking sunsets right from the living room, and hike many nearby trails all the while reconnecting with the natural world AND your own inner landscape.
