About this property

Yuba State Bank Apartment

The Yuba State Bank Apartment is the lower front apartment in a 4-unit commercial brick building. The historically renovated space has a mix of old and new, with hardwood floors, large storefront windows, a full kitchen and bathroom, and the bank vault off one of the two bedrooms. The apartment is located in the quaint village of Yuba (pop. 53), which is the smallest incorporated village in Wisconsin, 15 minutes (11 miles) from Hillsboro. You can grab a drink and meal next door at Louie's Bar.

This is a century old building that has been updated with modern amenities. The bank opened in 1919 and folded in the Great Depression. For many years, it was a restaurant, serving patrons at the dance hall next door (now Louie's Bar & Grill). We're breathing new life into this historic space. Enjoy the natural light coming from large storefront windows.

Idyllic, Wonderful Stay

Shaun's place was a perfect fit for us (two adults and a dog). We were working nearby for a few weeks and wished we'd discovered it sooner! The setting is idyllic to say the least. Yuba is a very quiet village (we probably heard more horses go by than cars) and you can get lost in the best kind of way exploring the surrounding valleys and backroads. The apartment had everything we needed and we looked forward to coming "home" from work every night, a true sanctuary. The record player was a much enjoyed feature. Shaun was an excellent host all around; we can't recommend his place in Yuba enough. We're looking forward to visiting the area again and know exactly where we'll be staying!

About the host

Host profile image
I grew up in northwest Iowa and northeast Missouri, and went to college at the University of Iowa. I lived in Minneapolis for 12 years until coming to Wisconsin. I enjoy restoring old buildings, raising vegetables, researching my family ancestry, reading books about American history, hiking, canoeing, bicycling, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. I like being a host because it helps us save this old building. My husband and I have worked on restoring, designing, and cleaning these apartments together. When people appreciate the old architecture and the space we've created, it makes it very rewarding :)

Why they chose this property

We chose this neighborhood because of the beautiful hills, valleys, springs, and streams. The small farms and villages were charming to me. We found our hobby farm on a realty website in La Farge. It just so happened to be close to Yuba. A few years later, I noticed this abandoned property in Downtown Yuba, and soon after Richland County put it up for sale because of unpaid property taxes. I'd dreamed of buying an abandoned brick building and restoring it, so that's how we ended up with this property in Yuba!

What makes this property unique

The bank vault is easily the most unique feature. But I think what makes our property unique also is that it's pretty natural. We don't have carpet, polyester sheets, or perfume cleaners (it's full of hardwood floors, cotton sheets, and more natural cleaners). I've made efforts to get fresh air into the building, restoring some of the old windows and doors with screens and storm windows that can be exchanged. And then also the location of the property is pretty interesting as well, in the downtown of the smallest village in the state.
