Secluded abode close to great outdoor adventures

We had a great time at Casa Peg. It was truly a relaxing experience in a jungle-like secluded setting. After a day at the beach, we loved coming home to hang out at the pool. Host was responsive to our requests for assistance with vehicle rental, places to eat, safety of the area and things to see and do. The beds were comfortable and we loved using the AC at night. The things that could use some improvement is letting guests know how to properly dispose of trash and having a tight-fitting lid on the trash can, as with disposing of food items in the trash can attract insects and such. Otherwise, this was a delightful stay and we would stay here again.

Loved sitting on the balcony and watching the sunset.

There is plenty of room and overall it is a fine place to be. It does need a sparkle since the furniture is well used and the lighting is low. It is a relaxing place to be. The hill up to the house seems daunting to walk up, but it really is not bad.

Great weekend

Casa Juanita was just what we needed for a weekend break to get some peace and quiet. We enjoyed the beach with our dogs and the house had everything we needed to kick back and relax. We hope to be able to return here again. Just one note the house has a TV but it is only for watching DVDs so suggest you bring some of your own with you if that's important. We brought our laptop so watched some TV shows on that.

Away from it all

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Juanita in the tiny village of Aticama. The house is clean, there is plenty of hot water, and the kitchen well stocked. Umberto checks on you daily to assure you have all you need. The house dog, Lulu, and cat, Stitch, are treats. There is only one small market in town that takes credit cards. Everyone else deals only in pesos, which you can get at the ATM in San Blas. The pollo place down the hill is excellent. Restarants all have the same menu of seafood and are very good. We found El Chaco on Mantachen beach to be very handy for food, drinks, hammocks, shade and bathrooms. About $2 US per person. Bring books and games as this is a very poor, family oriented town which closed up after dark.

Wonderful Stay

We had the most wonderful stay. Aticama is a paradise and Casa Juanita has everything we needed. It's clean and spacious enough for 2 couples or a small family. House keeper; Don Beto, is nice and helpful. We would definitely come back.

Two Weeks in Paradise!

We booked Casa Juanita for 2 weeks and could not have enjoyed our stay more. The main house and the guest house are both absolutely adorable, colorfully painted and with an artist's accents everywhere. The first week it was just my husband and myself and the second week another couple joined us. Casa Juanita is perfect for two couples because each can have a very private bedroom and bathroom of their own. But the common area, dominated by a long, open veranda with views of the ocean and red sunsets, is where we spent most of our time. The open air kitchen was well equipped and we made our own dinners almost every night preferring to stay home after days filled with outdoor adventures such as: a fishing trip, whale watching trip, bird watching trip, sitting on Aticama's beach (which is entirely empty of other people during the week), swimming in the ocean, and shopping and lunch-ing out in San Blas and the other nearby towns. The caretaker came to the house almost every day to do yardwork, maintenance, and check that we had everything we needed. The house is on a hill above the town (about 2 blocks down a cobble stone street very typical of Mexico) and is about 4-6 blocks to the stores and shops which have everything you need. Aticama is not a tourist town at all, which made it ideal for us as we prefer to have a more authentic experience when traveling. Most of all we were seeking peace and quiet, fresh air, beautiful scenery, and some hammock time with a good book. We felt entirely rejuvenated after 2 weeks in paradise and plan to book this house for at least 2 weeks every year from now on.

Very Special Place

I have stayed at Casa Juanita 3 times over the last 5 years, with children, teenagers and a friend. I have been meaning to write a review of Casa Juanita for some time. When booking recently, I saw a somewhat bad review which I found perplexing, and I wondered if things had changed since my last visit. But I stayed again for 9 days recently and I found the house as charming, clean and safe as ever. Casa Juanitia is a special place. The surrounding grounds are loaded with flowers and trees, and the view of the ocean and the hills is spectacular. We most recently stayed in August, and we had some thunderstorms in the evening, which we enjoyed outdoors, protected by the roofed patio, sitting in hammocks or rocking chairs. It is also a wonderful place to have an afternoon siesta. I love cooking in the outdoor kitchen which is well stocked. Everything was clean and well-protected from the elements. The local shops have everything needed and stay open into the evening. The two living areas have lots of windows which are well screened, so we could open them and hear the ocean and wildlife. Both AC units work very well. Both interiors had recently been painted and there was good storage for our things. The furniture is beautiful and there are plenty of lamps and comfortable sofas and a new flat screen T.V. The beds are both very comfortable with good linens and plenty of pillows. Both bathrooms clean and in great working order. The downstairs shower has amazing view! There are lots of towels. The caretaker Humberto is a very sweet man and is so helpful. He grew up in the area, and helped us plan trips to Tepic and Mexcaltitan, both good day trips. He also kept us well supplied with water. The beach is a short drive away, it has soft sand and very warm water. Within walking distance of the house are several little restaurants, with affordable fresh food. Two that have become favorites are Lucy's, with tamales and pozole, and Alicia's, with delicious grilled chicken and rice. Also a Tortilleria, with good corn tortillas daily. Casa Manana, about a mile away is a good place to have a cocktail, swim and pizza from wood burning oven on Saturdays. Our teenagers could take the bikes out to find a pick-up soccer game or get something from store. I am already planning a return trip during spring break with my family in tow again. I highly recommend this place for any traveler looking for an off the beaten trail, truly Mexican experience.

Great for Couples

We rented Casa Juanita for 6 months from Feb-July 2014 myself, husband and our 2 young children (2 & under 1) but ended up leaving after only 3 months (gave 1 month notice) because the property location just wasn’t suitable for foot travel with children and there was no yard. We enjoyed the real Mexican feel of the town and house. We spent many hrs enjoying the long porch during the day and patio off the kitchen at night (luckily we had packed our own large screen tent). The sunsets never disappointed us or our visitors. A few things are misleading in the listing: 1 The short walk to the beach is a steep hill with a roughly cobblestone surface not easily walkable with young children or people who might have mobility issues. The other option is a rough narrow path through the woods again up and down hills. 2 The yard is nothing like the picture or description -no grassy area or palapa and hammock. 3 There is NO off street parking and while we were there several cars on our street were broken into. We cooked most of our meals at the house and found the stores in the area had most of everything we would need. The kitchen had a great knife set and you could host up to 20 people with all the plates, cups and cutlery. On the down side the pots and pans were in a large garbage bin and a mish mash of sizes either too large or too small with no lids to match and the stove is in need of repair or replacement. We had to clear out the closet and the bureau so we could unpack as there were lots of personal items left. Half the light bulbs were not working, one of the air conditioners was broken as was 1 of the 2 ceiling fans in the living area/bedroom. When I asked the caretaker about it he said, yes it’s broken and it wasn’t fixed. We found the main living area/bedroom a bit dingy and not really clean. The house just didn’t seem to be set up to rent out. There were no instructions left on what to do with garbage, recycling, how to get water, what to do in case of emergency or how to get a hold of the caretaker if there were other problems. The owner did respond promptly when we emailed regarding some of these questions but it would have been more helpful to just have an instruction manual (as we had with all the other properties that we rented off VRBO).For the most part we really enjoyed our stay in Aticama and the caretaker was very helpful. I would recommend this property to couples for a fun getaway but NOT to families with children of any age.

Diamond in the rough

This pretty cliffside Casa is a diamond in the rough. If you are a little bit adventuresome, it is so worth the lovely drive through small Mexican villages to go there. It is not a tourist place at all do during the week, you have the beautiful beaches to yourself and the water was warm. Even though we don't speak Spanish, we were able to get by just fine even though very little English is spoken. The Casa itself was very special. The architecture was in true Mexican style with arched brick ceilings, hand painted designs on the colorful walls, lovely round bathroom, pretty Mexican furniture, wonderful veranda overlooking the tropical gardens and ocean. This place really allowed my creative juices to flow as I ended up painting 3 paintings during our stay. It also comes with a lovely seperate guest bedroom with its own round bathroom. We had some friends come up for the weekend and they had a blast. I don't remember the last time I got this relaxed away from it all (even though we had wifi). The Casa also comes with a caretaker who was extremely helpful and a watchdog which I'm not sure we needed as the place felt very safe. With an outdoor kitchen, we did have to learn the timing of our meals to have dinner cooked by sunset otherwise with lights on, you could invite bugs to join you for dinner. We would love to come back here!!! Thanks Peggy!!
