About this property

Unbeatable location! A Rare Downtown Gem-Art Haven. LICENSE No. REK-2023-035485.

REYKJAVIK CITY LICENSED RENTAL: REK-2023-035485.

Welcome to our unique apartment, located in a four-level building that used to be the home of well-known Icelandic artists Hulda Hakon and Jon Oskar. As the landlord, I grew up in this building, so it holds a special place in my heart. The apartment is truly one-of-a-kind, with amazing art on the walls that will take your breath away.

The building itself is divided into four levels. The basement level houses a breakfast place called The Grey Cat, while the first floor is home to Gallery Kontor, an art gallery that you can enter through the front of the building. At the back of the building, there is a private entrance to the apartment, which is located on the first floor. This entrance includes a half bathroom, as well as stairs that lead up to the second floor.
On the second floor, you'll find a master bedroom with a double bed, as well as a spacious dining room that is part of an open-concept space with the kitchen. The living area is also located on this floor, and it provides a comfortable and cozy space to relax. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook up a delicious meal.
But that's not all - there's also a third floor that features an open space with another double bed, a cozy seating area with a sofa and armchairs, and a full bathroom with a bathtub, shower, toilet, and walk-in laundry room.
As you explore the apartment, you'll be surrounded by stunning works of art by Hulda Hakon and Jon Oskar, who studied in New York in the 1980s. Their art is truly unique, and it's rare to have an opportunity to stay in a place that has such a close connection to these artists.
The apartment boasts an unbeatable location in downtown Reykjavik on Hverfisgata, a vibrant street that runs parallel to Laugavegur - Iceland's main shopping street. Guests can easily explore the bustling shopping scene on Laugavegur, as well as some of Reykjavik's most popular tourist attractions, such as the striking Sólfar sculpture and the picturesque waterfront promenade.
Hverfisgata also has a rich cultural heritage, with significant landmarks like Arnarhóll - a hill featuring a statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler in Reykjavik who arrived around 874 - the National Theater, The Culture House, and Bíó Paradís all located on the same street. With such an unbeatable location in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, this apartment is the perfect base for exploring all that the city has to offer.
If you're interested, we can even arrange for a guide to take you through the Gallery Kontor downstairs. Our apartment is truly a special place, and we can't wait to share it with you.

In addition to the previously mentioned attractions, this apartment is also located close to several key government institutions and diplomatic missions, making it an ideal location for business travelers or those with business at these institutions. The Supreme Court Justice, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Central Bank of Iceland, Office of the Prime Minister of Iceland, and the Danish Embassy are all within a short walking distance from the apartment. This prime location allows guests to easily access these institutions while still being in the heart of downtown Reykjavik.

Easy access to Flybus airport shuttle (1 min. walk). The Flybus takes you from Keflavik International Airport to downtown Reykjavik and back.

Example of reviews from former guests:
"Exceptional apartment. We have stayed in many rental apartments over the years and this was certainly one of the best"
"Wonderful flat in the heart of Reykjavik"
"Location wise, you couldn't ask for more...."
"Unbeatable location-- right in the heart of Reykjavik. You could walk anywhere! We rented a car for the week-- but you really don't need to"

We loved the home and didn’t want to leave. It is beautiful and charming and in a great location. The kitchen is great - everything was clean and comfortable and worked well. We want to come back!

Great location in Reykjavik
Wonderful location near the main shopping area and restaurants and bars. Easy to walk to all the spots in Reykjavik. The beds were comfortable. Only negative was that it was very noisy walking around the floors. Lots of creaks. To be expected in an old place. But if someone is sleeping, its hard not to wake everyone up! In an area with bars so the Friday night was very lively and noisy until very late. Other than those small issues, wonderful place!

Great location with lots of space
Perfect Reykjavik location! Directly across from the National Gallery, you are in the center of great shopping, restaurants and tourist attractions. Everything is within a short walk (including a grocery store or two). We rented a car and found plenty of free parking in the evening. We noticed there is a pick-up location downstairs for many of the local professional tours, so also great location if you don’t have a car. Lots of space and the kitchen is very well-equipped (we cooked several meals during our stay). Great little breakfast place downstairs. One thing to consider - Reykjavik is a late night town. It’s never completely dark outside in summer, so lots of folks are out very late having a good time and revelers can be a little loud on the sidewalk. If you are a light sleeper, just bring some earplugs. The host is very helpful and responsive.

Marvelous apartment, marvelous location
Incredibly convenient to Bus Stop 6 (2 minute walk), several excellent restaurants (within 5 minute walk), and wonderfully appointed with great art. If you have knee or back problems, there are three flights of narrow stairs you will have to navigate, so that could be a concern. The beds were quite comfortable, the washer-and-dryer appeared new, and after about 10 p.m., it was shockingly quiet. The host was incredibly gracious and kind. We definitely plan to stay here again.

Exactly as advertised
The owner's photos & description were perfectly accurate. As many reviewers mentioned there are lots of stairs. This was fine for us, but might not be for everyone. The location was excellent with all downtown sites within an easy walk. My two minor disappointments were some squeaky spots in the floors and I would have preferred receiving check-in info 48hr before arrival so that I could have printed it (I received it 24hr before arrival, which is plenty for most people in today's connected culture). I would definitely stay here again if I had another group of 3-6 people.

Excellent location in Reyjavik
The house was perfect for what we needed. The instructions for getting to the house as well as getting in the house were excellent. I really appreciated the information folder. Grocery stores within walking distance and plenty of restaurants if you don't want to cook. Plenty of towels for showers. The laundry room is big, so thankful for a separate washer and dryer. There is also a drying rack that we utilised. We arrived early morning and had paid for the night before so we could unpack/shower early and get started on sightseeing. It was so easy to get to by Flybus (I had bought tickets online before we left). Get off and stop #3 and it's about a 5 minute walk. That is also how we returned to the airport. We took 3 different day tours while we were there. Two departed from bus stop #3 and the other outside Harpa - which is only a few minutes walk. It cannot be any easier :-) We had an incredible few days in Iceland. It was so nice to come back each day to the house and feel like it was home. Thank you for letting us stay. I would stay here again if we come back and would recommend this place to anyone.

Perfect Place to Stay!!
We stayed here for a week with our two teenagers. The apartment is stocked with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. There is a notebook that provides lots of info regarding where to go and where to get groceries. This place is also an easy walk to lots of great restaurants, shopping and other cool places. If you are traveling with someone who struggles with stairs, this is not the place for you. We didn’t have issues with this, but could see less mobile individuals potentially having issues. We would definitely stay here again!

We loved everything about this vacation rental. Steps to the main shopping street. Steps to a great little breakfast restaurant. This place is spacious and easily accommodated our family of 5. The suite is spotless, well maintained and has all the modern conveniences. We would def stay here again. Thanks for sharing your home with us.

Nice place, GREAT location
The apartment is as is appears in the photos. It is an older building that has been restored. The place was clean and ready for us. The location is outstanding for visiting Iceland. There is a breakfast place in the building. Food was very good. If you exit the through the back, you go about 1/2 block and you are in the center of the shopping and restaurant area. I’m the afternoon, they shut the roads down and it is all pedestrians. The 1/2 block walk is perfect. When you are at the apartment, you can’t hear or see the people. The are 3 bus stops in about 3 blocks. Makes it easy if you don’t have a car.

Location is perfect! Iceland was beautiful!
We traveled to Iceland for the first time not knowing much of anything. When we arrived the apartment was very easy to enter into as Burkni has made it very easy and simple to gain access. This house sits in the heart of Reykjavik near all of the restaurants, bars and shops. The place is very easy to get to and has lots of parking options seconds away from the apartment. Burkni also answered all of my questions along the way and provided advice as needed. There was a total of 6 adults in this apartment and we had a ton of room. There are a ton of positives about this rental the only downside is that if you cannot do stairs this is not the rental for you. The washrooms are located on the bottom floor and the top floor so not washrooms on the main level. This was not a problem for our group but if you have someone with mobility issues this rental might be difficult for them. As I said this rental was absolutely perfect for us and our group but want to be open about the potential issues you could face. Burkni is a great host and if I was to travel to Iceland again I would stay here.

Clean, spacious, great location
This was a wonderful apartment for our family. It was located just a one-minute walk from a bus stop, walkable to the harbor, as well as many restaurants and shops. We did not need (or get) a car. The owner responded to my questions via email almost immediately. He let us arrive early and stay a few hours later. He had a booklet on the kitchen table with very helpful information for us. We couldn't have asked for a better situation. My family highly recommends this property! Thank you for adding to our great experience!

Immaculate, comfortable apartment in the best location!
My group of 5 (3 adults, 1 teen, 1 young boy) had the pleasure of making our first trip to Iceland with a weeklong trip during New Year's 2019. We opted for an apartment so that we could have more space to relax and be together (as compared to two separate hotel rooms) and as we wanted to cook a bit in order to save more time and money for exploring. Burkni's apartment is fabulous. The beds are so comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. The decor is lovely and unique. It was great after a day exploring the Golden Circle to come back to our apartment for a warm dinner and an evening of Uno, or to go to one of the bars nearby. The location is near everything you want to be close to in Reykjavik. If you visit during the Christmas holidays the streets are beautifully decorated which adds lovely charm. We are already thinking about a trip during the late spring and will definitely be back to stay here. Thank you, Burkni, for being a great communicator and for the recommendations you offered for NYE, restaurants, and things to do. You are a wonderful host!

Impressive location and stay
My family and I had an amazing stay here in Reykjavik. This location made it so easy to walk around the city and explore. Close to the water, city center, restaurants, cafes, museums and many other attractions. The house was only a hour drive from the airport and Blue Lagoon. It is absolutely beautiful inside and the perfect size for a large family. Burkni was great to work with prior to our stay, very responsive and helpful with any questions. This made our entire trip very enjoyable! Thank you for the wonderful stay.

this place is roomy and clean and decorated very nicely
we loved the huge kitchen and used it to have cousins over who live there. It was stocked nicely to cook. the beds were nice and tv room very cosy. I would tell people to rent here but, only if they could deal with the street noise that goes very late... like 4 am! we never saw the owner or we may have booked a trip with him... he never even spoke to us. He leaves very specific notes for you... and we follow rules. So even though you pay a cleaning fee, he states that you should wash all the dishes and put them away and take all the trash out. I thought it would be fine to put in dishwasher the morning we were leaving because it takes so long to wash. Worried we would do the wrong thing we hand washed and put them away which was rather stressful on an exit day. It is a beautiful unit, just had a few draw backs. Bring ear plugs for sure!!!

A gem in the middle of downtown Reykjavík!
From the moment that we walked into this charming apartment so conveniently situated near all the shops and restaurants, we knew we had hit the jackpot. Everything about the place was perfect from the airy main area to the well appointed kitchen-small but elegantly laid out. Beds were comfortable and everything was very clean. It suited our group of two couples to a tee, but had plenty of room for larger groups. As a bonus, the entire place was decorated with original artwork by members of Burkni’s family. Burkni couldn’t have been more responsive, answering texts immediately and spending some time to fill us in about tours that he offers. . He even made our day on the Westmann Islands, his original home, an extra treat with special tips. We highly recommend this spot.

Fantastic location in Reykjavik!
Thank you for a great visit! We came to Reykjavik to run the half marathon, and this location could not have been more perfect! We were steps away from the start and finish line. Also very close to many of the festivities for Culture Night, which was an added bonus. We had plenty of room to spread out in the apartment and truly enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you!!
