About this property

Historic, luxurious 2 bed 2 bath private suite in Lovell, 10 mins to Kezar Lake

The Ell is a newly renovated 2-bedroom, 2-bath guest suite in Lovell Village. The guest rooms are located in the 2nd floor rear ell of the historic 1839 James Walker House, a Greek Revival mansion built for one of the state's largest timber magnates, featured on the cover of the Summer 2023 issue of Maine Homes magazine. Comfortable and stylish, the space is equal parts rough and sophisticated, much like Lovell itself.

The two bedrooms each feature a queen bed, private full bathroom, as well as plenty of storage. Furniture throughout is a mix of antiques and new pieces ranging from early 19th century to today. Bedroom 1 has a cozy seating area with a lounge chair and reading lamp. Bedroom 2 has a desk setup, ideal as a writer's retreat or for you to work on vacation. (The WiFi is impressively fast for rural Maine.) Beds in both rooms are flanked with Blueprint NYC sconces and antique side tables. Bedding has been selected to ensure a restorative and luxurious night’s sleep. Plush mattresses topped with crisp percale sheets and a warm blankets or quilts offer guests a much needed rest so they can dream about what adventures they will have the next day. When you wake, you can freshen up in the classic b On top of these historic bones, we created a unique, luxurious rental space. Our biggest source of inspiration for the design of this project is the Maine concept of “Upta Camp.” This aesthetic pays homage to the multi-generational family retreats of the people that have come to the lake for a simplified way of life and an opportunity to reconnect with oneself and their friends and family. This space is unlike any other short-term rental in the Mount Washington Valley for its focus on high design, sleep experience, luxury products, as well as its unique historic setting. This as a four-season retreat, the perfect place for guests to relax after a long day of hiking, hunting, fishing, skiing, kayaking, floating the river, or enjoying the area’s many scenic drives

perfect location for our stay

Never did a VRBO before but as it turns out this was perfect for our stay. It was near all the areas we wanted to visit during our stay. Access to the property was easy and the area was very quiet. We will definitely consider this again in the future.

Style and Comfort

"The Ell" is part of the restored James Walker House in Lovell, ME. It is a private, comfortable, and brilliantly styled 2BR that offers all you need in modern conveniences, but with the country charm of the period. So many little touches - I drew some inspiration for my own farmhouse restoration project that just got underway. Thank you Sean and Zach for your terrific work and a wonderful stay!

Why they chose this property

Lovell is a beautiful, well preserved early 19th century New England village nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, surrounded by stunning view. It’s full of people who care deeply about protecting what makes it special. Like many of our neighbors, intense love and care has been put into preserving the character of the house, and the friendly community it is in.

What makes this property unique

When it was built in 1839, Lovell was on the edge of the wilderness, and this was by far the fanciest house in town. Built by a man who came to make his fortune in the woods, he brought with him his sophisticated city tastes, and fashioned himself like a southern plantation owner. His brother-in-law soon copied him next door. The house has been home to two state senators, including the original owner, and a national trapshooting champion.
