Creekside Cabin near Yellowstone - horse rides, rafting, zip lining, hiking

Experience Ranch Life In the West!
Have you ever wanted to stay in a historic cabin on a ranch in Montana? Do you prefer peace and quiet? This cabin is located in a secluded place surrounded by nature and 2 streams, with no other cabins in sight. This cabin does not have cell service or wifi, but there is a land line. Truly unplug and get away from it all.

We raise American Quarter Horses, and generally have at least one new foal every summer. Last summer our cabin guests were fortunate enough to witness the birth! The ranch is also home to chickens, pigs, cows, dogs, and cats.

Enjoy horseback riding in the mountains, watching the pigs wallow in the mud, watching wranglers bring the horses in from the fields, watching calves play while their mothers graze, watching a farrier put shoes on a horse, seeing the newborn foals, hiking on the many acres the ranch has to offer, viewing wildlife in their natural habitat- these are a few of the many of the activities that go on here on a daily basis!

The Stermitz Ranch History
Rob's great grandfather, Joseph, was born in Slovenia, Austria in 1862 and worked in the coal mines from the age of 9. He later immigrated here from Slovenia with his wife and two children in 1892, following the promise of work in coal mines in Montana. When they arrived he was not able to find work. Joseph used his last $10 to buy a rifle in order to hunt to be able to feed his family. While here, a fire broke out in the Cokedale mines. Joe helped put out the fires and was noticed by the mine boss who asked 'who is that good worker?' Someone explained that it was an immigrant who couldn't find work. The mine boss then said 'Put that man to work. Anyone who works that hard for no pay deserves a job. The family, along with the addition of three more children, moved to the ranch in Cinnabar Basin in 1900.

Comfy cabin stay

We so enjoyed our stay at Creekside Cabin. Perfect for Yellowstone Park visit. Well appointed, comfortable king bed, great hot water in shower after long day. The host provided excellent directions and checked to make sure we were enjoying the property. Relaxing creeks made for peaceful setting. We loved “unplugging” for a few days.

Beautiful!

This was a great stay. The cabin was so cute, the creek is fresh and cold, and there were only a few spiders and critters... my dad stayed in the bed and me and my partner used the two mats on the floor and they were comfy!!

Creekside Cabin is a quaint quiet and beautiful respite away from it all!

My family loved it here! A short drive from Yellowstone made for easy access anytime of day! My daughter also loved taking her first horse ride at the ranch! Olivia and Rachael who guided our ride were just perfect - knowledgeable about the history of the ranch, the area and immensely immersed in horses! The cabin was comfy, cozy and going to sleep with the babbling brook outside couldn’t have made for a more serene stay. Hope to make it back someday!

A quaint, cute cabin next to a beautiful scenic creek. We greatly enjoyed our horseback ride with Cody ( his singing was a bonus ). The property is breathtaking and a great place to unwind. ( no cellphone or internet signal in this location). Stacy was very responsive to a couple small issues that were quickly resolved.

Disenchanted

This period 1900, small cabin is remote and isolated, basically in a ravine with no mountain views, no wifi, satellite or cable TV for miles. Recommend that visitors do not drive a low sitting, compact vehicle due to the rough 4.5 mile dirt road you'll travel from the nearest town. Meets bare minimums, i.e., compact refrigerature. The creeks to and around the property are peaceful. The owners are responsive and pleasant. They offer several outdoor activities for a fee.

Great cabin, awesome experience

The cabin is exactly as pictured, very clean and cozy! It had everything you need including cooking equipment and a comfy bed! The location is great, secluded, but not too far from town. Very close to the north entrance of Yellowstone, where we saw so much wildlife! The rental process and check in was trouble free and very easy. The owners were friendly and helpful, reaching out to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay. We would definitely stay at Creekside cabin again and have recommended it to friends!

A Perfect Getaway

The Creekside Cabin was the perfect place to stay while visiting Yellowstone National Park. The location was amazing and offered the perfect place to unwind after a long day. The cabin was clean and cozy with plenty of room for two adults and two kids. It had everything we needed for our stay. Stacy was a gracious host and ensured we had everything we needed (including bear spray). The ranch was a beautiful place to hike and I can see us coming back in the future.

Beautiful Surrounding

My family and I loved the Creek Cabin it was surrounded by a running creek on both sides it was beautiful. It was a small place perfect for the 4 of us and a great unplug with no cell service or WIFI. Only negative thought the horse back riding, rafting and zip lining was included as fun activities but found out day before they all cost quite a bit of money.

Mountain Exploration and Wildlife Tour

We thought the property was amazing and beautiful. The creekside cabin was great for unplugging unfortunately I am a bit OCD! Bring some fun along, cornhole boards or some card or board games, not much area for any diversion at the cabin but there is tons of beautiful area to hike and see. We enjoyed the horseback ride, we woke up to a fresh fallen snow in June, never see that in Oklahoma! The two hour ride was informative and fascinating, seeing those breathtaking views early in the morning was well worth it. This was perfect distance for our base of Yellowstone exploration and Gardiner didnt disappoint for tourism attraction and a fun night out! We saw several elk coming in and out of the basin and were very satisfied with our choice of location. Rich family heritage made it seem unique place to call our home for a few days, only wish I'd booked to stay a little longer. All in all we had a great time on a much needed vacay getaway!

Our original trip was planned around Yellowstone. But a week before our stay, radical rains and flooding washed away bridges and several parts of the road into Yellowstone via the north entrance (Gardiner), closing all of Yellowstone. After connecting with Stacy about Creekside still being available, we chose to come. Parts of Yellowstone reopened on June 22nd with limited guests at the West, South and East entrances, but the North entrance remained closed. I mention this, as the park closure impacted the activities near Creekside as well. We weren't aware until we arrived that horse back riding near the property and zip-lining had also closed. No matter. We were content to listen to the creek, savor the quiet and enjoy the ever-changing Montana weather. The cabin itself is well-insulated--close the windows and you'd never know you were near water. Open them, and fall asleep to the sound of water. The cabin is ideal for two people. We brought our kids who shrugged off sleeping on the couch and on a couple of stacked mattresses on the floor, but the design is really for two. The kitchen was equipped with pots and pans of all kinds. More than adequate. The fridge is small, so would suggest a cooler for extra storage. The cabin was thoughtfully decorated and had all the extras we might need--blankets, towels, bear spray, dvds, clear instructions. Trimming the overgrown bushes might help match the beautiful inside. Blessed by kind, hard-working hosts. So glad we came.

Peaceful Creekside Cabin

We enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the cabin during our stay. Stacy & Rob were very helpful with things to do in the area, since the North Entrance road was only open to guided tours. Our teenagers hiked Black Mountain (10hr out & back hike). Don’t count the Gardiner area out, they made tremendous strides in opening up the area after the flood.

Cute cabin

Located between two creeks, you'll get the best night sleep here. Note, the fridge in a mini so don't shop for a full. The bed was so comfortable and so was the couch. The cabin was great for grilling, cooking, and enjoying nature. There is no cell service, we had 3 different networks so make sure to get your text or email directions when your in town.

Rustic Getaway With Everything Provided!

The cabin was perfect for me and my husband. Stacy has pretty much thought of everything you might need to be comfortable in the cabin. There is not a laundry on the property, however there is a fluff and fold laundrymat in Gardiner. The washing machines and dryers are very fast, so if you need to wash clothes after a day on a horse or exploring the mountains, you won’t need to spend a lot of time washing clothes. There’s a great little country store in Gardiner, which by the way is a very small town, but they make the best huckleberry ice cream. If you’ve never tried it, you should! There is a small clothes line in the back of the cabin if you wish to hand wash a few things. The cabin itself was well stocked, even had our favorite steak seasoning, Mc Cormicks Montreal. We ended up cooking steaks on the propane grill our last night. We had a nice trail ride, if you get the two mules, they are very calm, full sized like a horse, but with a donkey face! When heading to Gardiner, take the scenic Old Yellowstone Trail at least once, I caught some great pics there. There was no zip lining available due to staffing issues and we were a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see any pigs, chickens or other farm animals other that the horses. But the cabin was comfortable after a day exploring the park and surrounding areas. I tried mountain oysters for the first time at the Old Saloon restaurant a few miles down the road on 89. They were good, tasted like flat conch fritters! We drove over Beartooth pass to Cody WY where 4-6 feet of snow had fallen and they had just reopened the road. It was breathtaking! Definitely bring binoculars, my husband was pleasantly surprised that everything was available in the cabin, liquid soap, shampoo, lotion, bear spray and a first aid kit. There was even a fire extinguisher next to the outdoor grill! There are a few hidden gems in town like the old Gardiner jailhouse. It’s just behind Cowboys restaurant.. There is so much to see and do and the Creekside Cabin is a great, quaint place to call home while visiting. Obviously, Stacy and Rob have put a lot of love into making their cabins home for weary travelers! As mentioned, there is no Wi-Fi or cell service at the cabin, but there is a landline. If you need to call home, purchase a calling card before arrival. There is service in Gardiner and spotty cell service in Yellowstone. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back again!

Family vacation

This was such a cute little cabin. The weather wasn’t great so I never really got to enjoy the creek and the porch. My son said the couch was the most comfortable bed he’s ever slept on. It was a bit of a drive from town but we liked the seclusion.

I feel extremely blessed to live in such an amazing place. My late husband and I were fortunate to raise our 4 sons, who are the 5th generation, here on the historic Stermitz Ranch. Rob worked full time as a Landscape Architect in Yellowstone. Stacy is a full time mom and manages the vacation rental properties and the horseback rides. We enjoyed working on renovation projects together, generally on the weekends as time allowed. The schoolhouse is our third complete renovation on the aging ranch buildings. The next project will be the original homestead house built in 1910. We have enjoyed the challenges that each building brings, and look forward to the day when all of the original structures have been restored and preserved!

Why they chose this property

After Rob and I both graduated from college and got married, we decided that this was the ideal place to raise our kids. We both shared a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the history of the area, and the proximity to Yellowstone Park makes it ideal. We just love the story of how his family came to be here. Rob's great grandfather, Joseph, was born in Slovenia, Austria in 1862 and worked in the coal mines from the age of 9. He later immigrated here from Slovenia with his wife and two children in 1892, following the promise of work in coal mines in Montana. When they arrived he found that no work was to be found. Joseph used his last $10 to buy a gun so that he could hunt in order to feed his family. While here, a fire broke out in the Cokedale mines. Joe helped put out the fires and was noticed by the mine boss who asked 'who is that good worker?' Someone explained that it was an immigrant who couldn't find work. The mine boss then said 'Put that man to work. Anyone who works that hard for no pay should get a job.' The family, along with the addition of three more children, moved to the ranch in Cinnabar Basin in 1900. They purchased the original homestead of Bob Dixon. Their house consisted of a dirt roofed dugout built by Dixon. Later, when the mine closed in 1910, the lumber was brought from the hospital building in Aldrige to construct a log and lumber house. Rob's grandfather was born here in 1910. He later attended this school. In 1935, Rob's grandfather married Gladys Elliott, who was one of the teachers at this schoolhouse. Their son, Jim, also attended school here and continued to live here on the ranch with his wife Lorayne.

What makes this property unique

The ranch is ideally located in the remote mountains of the Gallatin National Forest, while still being a close drive to the many wonders of Yellowstone National Park. We enjoy watching the abundant wildlife, hiking and skiing from our back door, and taking a horseback ride up the scenic mountain trails that the ranch has to offer. Being in the great outdoors is what this property is all about! Experience what life is like on a western ranch. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do.
