About this property

Cozy, pet-friendly one-bedroom apartment in Brattleboro, Vermont

Welcome to the Culbertson House! Unique and a little quirky, beloved by the resident-owners and dozens of guests alike over the years, this 100-year-old house occupies a rare space in the town of Brattleboro, a spot that is quiet and peaceful and on the edge of the forest, yet close to all major thoroughfares. We are 1.5 miles from downtown Brattleboro, with its offerings of fine dining, unique shopping, diverse cultural entertainment and funky nightlife. The major ski areas of Mt. Snow and Stratton are within a 40 minute drive.

In the 1950's the house belonged to the legendary Ely Culbertson- the "Father of American Contract Bridge" and author of many books on bridge as well treatises on world peace and utopian world government. He was a character!

The house is currently divided into three apartments. Your hosts live in the center apartment and there's a cute studio on the east side of the house.

The location is ideal; the forest behind and beside the house gives a feeling of being in a quiet, secluded home in the woods, yet the apartment is only a half-mile from Interstate 91 and a few hundred yards from Rt.9, the main east-west state highway leading to western Vermont and New Hampshire.

We are proud of our flower gardens which surround the house, including herbs and vegetables growing right outside your door; feel free to pluck some parsley or pick a tomato or two for your dinner! There's also a relaxing place to sit outside for dining al fresco or enjoying a beverage, and we provide a Weber charcoal grill so you can grill a steak or throw some shrimps on the barbie.

We're in Vermont, of course, so winters at the Culbertson House Studio are terrific. We're right in the middle between the uber-resorts of Mt. Snow and Stratton, about a 40-minute drive to both. Additionally, we have the best ski deal in New England right here at the Brattleboro Ski Area at Memorial Park. Ski from 7-10pm, under the lights, for $5. It's one T-bar and one little slope, but highly recommended. It's where one of your owners basically learned how to ski as a kid.

The bustling, artsy town of Brattleboro is only 1.5 miles down the road. Just steps away, literally a five-minute walk, is the renowned Brattleboro Farmers' Market, operating on Saturdays from May to October, with fresh local produce, wonderful food trucks and a rich selection of local arts and crafts. Five more minutes of walking will bring you to Living Memorial Park, with a summer swimming pool, skateboard park, a Frisbee golf course and other features, and nightly softball games under the lights. And that ski slope.

Nearby are incredible hiking trails (there are some great trails right behind the house), swimming holes, canoe rentals, a terrific 18-hole golf course, and
Brattleboro's bustling downtown, where you'll find unique shopping and fine dining (we've got lots of recommendations, from the tender ribs at the Top of the HIll grill to the exquisite gourmet fare of Peter Havens.)

Just to add, the hiking trails on the big hill behind the house are extensive and beautiful, and cross-country skiers can follow them through the woods in winter, too.

We renovated this apartment with vacation rentals in mind; unlike many VRBO rentals it is dedicated solely to our guests and you're free to make the space your own. There's private parking and a welcoming, homey feel to the space that we're sure you'll enjoy.

We do provide all the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher and large microwave, high-speed wifi internet, and TV equipped with a Roku stick with open accounts for Netflix, Fubo and Hulu.

We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay here at the Culbertson House!

We do accept pets; our dog Gracie loves meeting new friends!

Nice quiet stay, no hot tub

Place was a nice little apartment owners were really nice and quickly responsive to any questions. Our only disappointment was there was NO HOT TUB which was one of the biggest reasons for choosing this place to stay.

Cute but needs some work

GOOD POINTS: Dave is very nice, communicates and is helpful. Location is very nice & quiet. Place is small but cute layout. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom is cute. Appliances work well. Plenty of storage. BAD POINTS: The smells in the apartment were terribly hard to handle and we burned 9 large candles to try to help. Musty, moldy, mouse urine & droppings throughout the place. Empty soda can & garbage down between the wall & fridge that I just could not get out of there, too tight, very dusty, constant cigarette smoke smell, gas exhaust for owners heating is piped through plastic pipes sticking out the front of the apartment right under the windows which seeped in every time he used his heat. The couch is awful uncomfortable & smells of whatever happened on that couch in the past & of mouse pee / droppings & old mustiness. Nasty chair in the bedroom. The old drapes in the bedroom are musty & moldy smelling and so dusty & dirty. The 2 small curtains in the kitchen (which has 4 windows) are dirty, musty and only cover 2 of the 4 windows. The bathroom curtains are too short (don't cover the bottom of the window) and almost see through (Not private). I spent a lot of time & money cleaning and just couldn't get rid of the smells. If there was anything else in the area available we would have left the 1st day. Unfortunately there was nothing available and we wanted the month to see our kids, family & friends we hadn't seen in 2 years. We did leave a day early however. Bad for us.

Small for 2-convenient location-nice yard-plenty of parking-driveway grade isn't steep-No AWD needed

When I rented this property for Christmas week 2020, the listing said 800 sqft but at check-in I immediately told owner's husband it was1/2 that size-he didn't respond & we never heard from owners during the stay or after-now the listing says 550 sqft (it's 400 sqft max even if you count the 2 closets). Owners live on the property, so I'd hoped it would be clean (especially in pandemic) since they don't rely on others to manage it, but there were items left behind by other guests (a prescription bottle dated May 2020 by the bed & silicone ear plugs by the dresser), large cobwebs & some dust bunnies (I have 2 homes listed on VRBO, so I know SOME cobwebs/dust are inevitable but if you're not seeing items left behind, you aren't dusting /cleaning under/around furniture & it made us feel uneasy during COVID.) The listing says kitchen is "fully stocked" -the few pots/pans are outdated (if I'd known, I would have brought my own) but functional & there are some spices/coffee/tea which was nice. The owners only give a landline # so you can't text them & messages through VRBO app weren't always answered timely. When arrive you discover there's no cell service for 3 of the major carriers & only 1-2 bars with Verizon, so may be why they don't text but it made it difficult to communicate with them after arriving, unless you go knock on their door but who wants to be a bother, especially during the holidays. They do have great WiFi, which was essential since my HotSpot/MiFi didn't work. At check-out, I left a note & the items we found from the prior guests but owners didn't reach out, which was disappointing. Also, the sofa is not "comfy" as listed-it's OK but it's the only cushioned furniture in the small kitchen/LR, except for 1 other chair (which IS very comfy). Also, unless you all want to watch TV in the bedroom on the small TV mounted to the bdrm wall, bring your own. We wanted to watch holiday movies while decorating the artificial tree we brought but you can't see the TV from the other room. BUT OVERALL we had a great holiday! The view of the snowy garden area from the front door is BEAUTIFUL & owners keep the spacious parking area/driveway cleared of snow-it's NOT a steep drive, so didn't need AWD, which was great! Owners were super nice to put my meal-kit-box that was delivered early in the fridge. And we LOVE how convenient it is to shops & restaurants. Just a few tweaks would make this place ideal for 1-2 people.

Great location near heart of Brattleboro.

Our yearly pilgrimage to witness the fall foliage started in Brattleboro. From there we easily explored many beautiful parks and locations as far south as Springfield, MA and across the Connecticut River to NH. The colors were glorious, and the accommodations, for the two of us were just what we needed. And our dogs loved it too!

We are an international family, American/British and Russian, and have lived in Europe and the US. We are both involved in the arts. We love hosting travelers and have met people from all over the globe. We care about our property a great deal and are always tinkering and renovating, as well as maintaining our lovely flowerbeds and landscaping.

Why they chose this property

This property is perfect for travelers, in a quiet location yet close to all the offerings of this unique Vermont town. It is a strongly individual property with a lot of history, and a very Vermonty feel to it, surrounded by forests and a babbling brook nearby. The convenience and full set of amenities also make the Culbertson House an ideal spot for an extended stay. We've had loads of traveling nurses and business people stay for months at a time (and made some great friends in the process!)
