Family Camp Vibes

Our family really enjoyed vacationing at the cabin. It felt as though we were at a family camp, but of course we did the cooking (or at least went out for dinner!) There were many things to entertain us such as water sports gear and cozy areas such as a fire-it area. The sunset views were amazing and I loved watching the changes of the lake with the weather out the beautiful large windows. Dave was a hospitable person and check-in was smooth.

Exceeded all expectations….this place was simply awesome!!

Was looking for a place our family could all come together and make memories, and this was just perfect! Fun and relaxing, and the pictures do not do it justice. Such a beautiful set up. Only wish we could have stayed longer! You don’t ever have to leave, but if you do Poor Peoples Pub is the perfect spot for local beer and lobster rolls :)

Perfect vacation. We all left happy ( and sad to leave).

The property was gorgeous - the feel of an old New Hampshire Camp, that has been carefully maintained, upgraded but without losing its authenticity. The house was beautifully decorated and liveable . From the moment my family and friends walked in the door we felt that we were staying at someone's home that had been thoughtfully decorated and loved. The setting could not have been more perfect. We barely left the property except for daily walks or a longer hike or a beach visit. We stayed for two weeks and could have stayed so much longer. Dave and MB were so lovely and went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed. They care about their lakeside properties and the people who stay there. And I would be remiss not to mention their two loving, funny, and playful dogs who added their own special brand of charm. I have stayed at many places but I have to say this tops my list. Thank you, Dave, MB, and Biker, and Minnie dog for bringing so much joy. Thank you for the boat ride, the conversations, and your care. Looking forward to returning next year.

Updated camp on a great lake

Dave and MB take excellent care of their guests and the lodge. The house was spotless upon entry. All the décor in the house is beautiful, comfortable, and very thoughtfully put together – rustic elegance meets casual lakeside charm! There is plenty of room to spread out inside the house, the back deck gets lots of afternoon sun and fantastic sunsets for happy hour. Great East Lake is a clean, quiet, deep, lake that allows for everything from swimming to kayaking to wake boarding. The owners are well stocked on “toys” – plenty of kayaks, stand up paddle boards, basketballs/court games, SO many activities. The house is in a great location, there is a grocery store less than ten minutes away so you don’t have to bring EVERYTHING for the week, which was very helpful. A few things to consider depending on your travel preferences – First there is only one shower in the house. There are two bathrooms, one downstairs that has a stall shower, and one upstairs that has a tub with no shower head (and all bedrooms are upstairs). The tub is great if you’re into tubs, or have kids, and it’s perfectly positioned for sunset views out the bathroom window. But for a house that can sleep ten, one shower might not be enough for some parties. Second, the outside of the house is NOT safe for very small children (toddlers and crawlers). The only outdoor space that is private to the lodge is the back deck, which has no fencing or strong natural barrier and drops down a steep slope into the lake (and/or down many steps to the private dock). The basketball court for the property is right in front of the lodge which is good for running around, but this is communal space. Elsewhere, there isn’t much soft “green” space for outdoor play. Regarding the communal aspect of the amenities, you are very close to the other cabins, one of which is occupied by the owners (who were not imposing, but innately with this set up there is going to be an element of feeling “supervised," or extra effort made to be a good guest - a benefit if you're the owner, which I can understand). The fire pit is shared, as is the clubhouse, and easy swim-entry ramp. I wouldn’t say this is a problem, but should be considered depending on your own expectations and desire for privacy. Overall, this is a good house for families with kids school aged and up, in a great spot on Great East.

Perfect Vacation

Our stay at the Great East Lodge could not have been better. The lodge is the perfect combination of throw-back character and modern amenities. The sunsets were great and the cool lake breeze had everyone well rested for another day of adventure on the lake and surrounding mountain hikes. The set up of the property was really neat, and with all the water toys the kids barely left the water. Dave and MB were fantastic hosts, very gracious and attentive to all the guests to ensure we had a great stay. We can't wait to come back.

A Magical Week

We loved every minute of our stay at Great East Lodge. Sparkling clean, loads of character, and everything you could need is already there. Loads of room for our group of six, though we spent most of out time outside. The lakeside porch is amazing and the sunsets will stay with us forever. No shortage of water toys: kayaks, floating tubes, SUPs, noodles, swim dock! Dave and MB have created a very special retreat. They could not have been more friendly and helpful. Yet the lodge offers plenty of privacy as well. Really, the nicest lake vacation we have ever had. Thanks so much!

Amazing Experience

The place is beautiful and we had such a great time. Dave, his wife and all his guest in the properties around us was amazing. We went for a quick getaway and I believe we made friends for life. He was generous enough to take us on a boat ride and just the entire set-up was an unique experience. The water and sunset views were precious, the water toys abundant. My friends and family enjoyed it very much and we hope to be back next summer!!

Terrific stay at serene Great East Lake

Our extended family were warmly welcomed by Dave as soon as we arrived. We received a great overview of the property and its many amenities. The house is historic and decorated beautifully, yet not so particular that we felt uncomfortable with four kids in the house. Beds were comfy. Kids loved the bunk room. Best thing about the house (aside from the resident Golden Retrievers) is the beautiful lake and the amenities that come with the house, Never short of kayaks, paddle boards, noodles, floaties, you name it. The house has a lovely deck where one could easily pass hours reading a book and enjoying the sounds of the lapping lake waves. Not to mention the sunsets! The owners are consummate hosts, making everyone from the youngest (8) to the oldest (88) feel at ease, safe and happy. A wonderful getaway for an extended family.

Awesome Vacation!

We rented Dave’s property for my husband’s 60th birthday. We had 6 adults, a 2 1/2 yr old and an 8 month old. The space was perfect. Plenty of space to gather all together and also space if you wanted quiet time. Every room was beautifully decorated with attention to detail! The kitchen had all the things you needed to cook and serve. There are extra pots if needed. Everyone left feeling relaxed and that it was a “real” vacation! Dave has a boat shed with SUP and kayaks that can be used. If you’re looking for a fun and relaxing vacation where you can hear the loons calling to each other, this is the place. Dave, MB, Mini and Biker couldn’t have been more gracious host! We all loved it!!!

Wonderful family vacation!

We had a wonderful time at Great East Lodge. Everyone seemed to enjoy our vacation. We had a great time with all the water toys--kayaks and paddle boards. The lake is so crystal clear--it's just beautiful. And there is plenty of space for everyone--there were 8 of us. The whole week was better than I expected!

Family Fun, Natural Beauty, and a Wonderful Lodge!

Our vacation to Great East Lake Lodge was quite simply PERFECT! The Lodge is beautifully decorated - it is comfortable, stylish, well maintained, and very clean. The views of the lake from the Lodge are AMAZING! While the photos of the house and lake are wonderful - both are even more beautiful in person. MB and Dave were exceptional hosts, and we felt immediately welcomed and at home with all of our new friends. Adults and children alike had the best time - enjoying the basketball court, the waterfront, all of the water toys/equipment, the game room, the tiki hut, and the fire pit. Several in our group also enjoyed wonderful fishing - catching both small and largemouth bass right from the dock at the Lodge. From listening to the loons at sunrise to enjoying sunset cruises on the water, each moment of our stay was magical. This place is truly special! We simply cannot wait to return!

Best lake vacation ever

We had the best time on our first lake vacation. We stayed at the big house right on the lake and loved it. Decorated beautifully and enjoyed sitting on deck watching sunsets. Dave, MB and dogs Mini and Sushi were great hosts. Dave went out of his way to show us a good time on pontoon boat sightseeing around the lake and tubing. Was so much to do without ever leaving the lake - kayaking, paddle boards or just swimming in the lake.

A perfect family holiday

In a nutshell, we would echo all of the positive reviews that have gone before. We rented the main house for a week which just flew by too quickly. Too many activities, too little time! As others have said, Dave and MB were perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble - particularly when it came to guiding/driving/dragging us round the lake on/in/behind the various water-based vehicles. Kids loved the tubing, water-skiing, kayaking, paddle-boarding etc. Big plus for us was the temperature of the lake - it really was the perfect temperature, refreshing but not at all cold. Although plenty to occupy us at the lake, we also tried jet-skiing at Wolfeboro and river tubing on the Saco River from Conway (Tip - only go if it has rained recently and the river has some water in it! A very 'lazy river' otherwise as we discovered.) Would definitely recommend this property to others and would love to return ourselves.

Great vacation rental on Great East Lake!

Our family has vacationed on and off on Great East Lake since the 1950's. This was our first time at the Lodge and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is beautiful and the access to the lake, the amenities and especially getting to know Dave, MB and the others who were staying in the cottages was a real treat. We will definitely plan to come back sooner rather than later.

Making new memories

Amazing property within sight of the house my husbands parents built many years ago. We brought our family to the lake to fulfill a promise to my in laws that after their death we would return with them to the lake where they spent so many happy years! The Lodge was amazing, Dave and MB could not have been more helpful, taking the kids out on the boat to go tubing as well as providing all the water based activities we could have wished for! Mini promptly adopted my son and they were inseparable all week. We could not have asked for a more perfect vacation for our family. We enjoyed day trips plus the obligatory lunch at Poor People's Pub!! I would recommend GEL to anyone wanting a lake vacation house that lives up to its promises.....and beyond.

Perfect weekend at the most beautiful house!

We visited the lake for a friend's bachelorette weekend. There were 14 of us total so we ended up renting the main house as well as one of the cottages. The location was absolutely perfect. Everything about the house is beautiful, not just because of the location (which is amazing), but the decor as well. They have done such a wonderful job. We couldn't have asked for more from the weekend. There are so many things to do without ever leaving the property- kayaing, paddle boarding, swimming, lounging on the raft/dock, or just hanging on the incredible deck overlooking the lake. We had such a great time, and appreciated the hospitality of Dave and MB. We especially loved the company of their two dogs, Mini & Sushi. Mini (the MOST adorable golden retriever you have ever seen), ended up spending most of the day with us on Saturday. For a group of dog lovers, this was an added treat to an already perfect trip.

Loved the Lodge !

Just got back from a wonderful weekend at the Great East Lodge. While I've previously rented one of the smaller cabins, I wanted to try the larger lodge. The private deck and boat dock were a perfect compliment to a relaxing week, and it was a joy to fall asleep to loon calls while waking up each morning to an incredible view of the lake. Dave and MaryBeth are wonderful hosts, and took us out on the lake for relaxing sunset tours. The fishing was just what I was seeking to kick back, and everyone had a great time yet again. There's never a bad day at Great East Lake, and I'm looking forward to renting from Dave and MaryBeth Barr in 2017.

A perfect holiday

What a perfect family holiday. We were 2 families - 4 adults and 5 children - from the UK and Dave & MB (not forgetting Pat) together with sushi and minnie made it a holiday to remember. The house was the just the right size and had everything we needed. It has been beautifully decorated by MB. The main 2 bedrooms have glorious views over the lake but our favourite part of the house was the outside decking overlooking the lake where we dined every night. You can do as little as much as you like. The property comes equipped to do every activity you could hope for - my 7 year old daughter even tried water skiing. Our favourite time of the day was when everyone staying on the property gathered by the tikki bar to have nibbles and drinks whilst watching the sun go down. Quite often we reconvened later on by the fire pit and the children gorged themselves on smore's. A highlight of the holiday was our mini olympics where everyone staying on the property was split into teams to compete in everything from basketball to synchronised swimming. Its days like this that the memories stay with you for ever. Dave and MB were the perfect hosts - nothing was too much trouble - and they helped make it the best family holiday ever. We will be back!

Why they chose this property

It's hard to describe ..... that feeling when you know something is just right !!! Sounds crazy that we bought lake property in February but it felt so right and has been even better than we dreamed.

What makes this property unique

The Lodge was built in 1889 and the Cottages were added in the early 1950's so there is yesterday's rustic charm with today's conveniences. The sunsets, clear water, stars above the fire pit and the loons make us all warm and fuzzy.
