Good access to Skytree shopping mall and Asakusa! Convenienct location for tourists!
A 70 year old traditional Japanese townhouse located in well known downtown, Mukojima, Tokyo. The house belongs to my husband who spent his childhood there. We are university professors, and the house was too small for us to live with our three children and lots of books, so we have never lived there. After 30 years, I found it quite cool as it looked remaining very nostalgic, which brought me back to the nice and old days of Japan. Now it is very rare to find this kind in Tokyo. The house was renovated nicely with its original taste. There are two bedrooms; one with a double bed and the other with two singles. The bedrooms on the second floor are floored with tatami mats. There are small but cozy living space and a kitchenette in the first floor. Bathroom with a bathtub and shower head. You will find the 'washlet' in WC. Since the house was built right after WWII, everything is made small according to the Japanese people's frame at that time. If you are way taller than 6 feet, you may find it a bit close and uneasy.

Part of my reason for returning to Japan, was to study traditional interior decorating, This house was a good example, as it was built before WW2, Other advantages were the nice neighborhood, plenty of space, laundry, good heating system, friendly owner.
Hi-de was an excellent host. The responses and information provided were accurate, fast, and much appreciated. I will be recommending this property to all my friends and family, thank you Hi-de
We enjoyed all aspects of our stay at Sumire House. It’s cozy and safe tucked away in an area filled with families. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, bus just out the door and two major stations a ten minutes walk. The owner is quick to reply to any needs and concerns. Have fun in Tokyo…we did!
We enjoyed our stay at Sumire House. Communication was excellent from the start. Very charming traditional house and nicely located, far enough from the commercial shopping areas but with good access. Family Mart across the alley. Only caveat - street noise. A good pair of ear plugs worked well for me. Super clean house, well-supplied with all the basics. Comfortable beds with warm comforters. Would definitely stay again.
Charming traditional house with great access to transport networks
Unique and great stay at Sumire house. There's no other house like it in the neighbourhood. The proximity to the local shrine also adds to its charm. We loved the location - away from the hustble and bustle of major tourist areas but well connected via Hikifune and Sky tree station making it easy to get to destinations. We stayed during winter, and whilst there are heaters, the house isn't well insulated, and on the ground floor in particular and it can get rather cold. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay and our hosts were also great and accommodating.
This was a very good place to stay overall with great communication from the hosts. It is close to 2 train lines and it was very easy to get from Oshiage Station to Haneda Airport with our luggage. Two things to be aware of: 1) It is very close to a main road and was noisy at night. Windows can also rattle in the wind (it is an older house, which is also part of it's charm). Provided earplugs were definitely needed and worked well for 2 of us.
2) Stairs to the second level are steep & can be challenging with larger than carry-on baggage size.
Overall it was a place I would be happy to stay again. The local convenience store about 10 metres away was very friendly and a good source of readymade meals, snack items, milk and were kind enough to store our luggage after checkout.
This property was just as we imagined - full of character and charm. Conveniently located to trains, supermarkets, restaurants and so many fabulous attractions with Skytree a short walk away, the river, temples and shrines. Although small it accommodated our family of 4 quite comfortably.
Wonderful property in a wonderful location. My family and I had a great summer vacation at your home. We can’t wait to visit again. Thank you from Canada!
Nice host & lovely location next to a shrine. Easy walk to 2 stations. Nice traditional elements. Functional (but we were a little tall for the main floor) we had a great time. It was nice to have laundry.
Lucky are those who get to stay in this individual calm wooden Japanese house. As a group of 4 adults we managed well, in this house which was very clean, well equipped with comfortable beds and cooking facilities. The bathroom had a great shower, a Toto and plenty of hot water, a tub if you wish.Yes taller people have to duck through a couple of lower doorways, but don't let that stop you from a unique experience. The location close to the Sumida river allows for beautiful walks. It is an easy walk to supermarkets and train stations located at Skytree. There multiple local small restaurants that are welcoming with great food. There is an excellent bakery close by called Kameya where you will chose a different delight everyday, and you will want to go everyday. Lastly the hosts are thoughtful and informative people who are always available and responsive to communications. A house to remember and return to as soon as possible.
We’ve stayed at Sumire house many times. It’s our favorite lodging spot in Tokyo. It is a traditional mid-century Japanese wooden house in the middle of a lovely Tokyo neighborhood. You’ll be close to great shopping (Tokyo Skytree), trains (easy access to Hikifuni and Oshiage stations), and delicious family run restaurants (too many to name). The house is well equipped, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Note, it can get a bit noisy at night in the winter when the wind kicks up and windows rattle but you quickly get used to it. The owner is kind and helpful. We love it and will keep coming back.
We enjoy all this area has to offer. Walking along the river, easy jaunt over to Asakusa and all the small restaurants and bars lining the backstreets. Close to two stations with big shopping areas around each. Family Mart just out the door and larger grocery two blocks away. Lots of independent bakeries, tofu and tea shops. The owner is very responsive and kind. Thank you for making us feel welcome Sumire House…see you again!
15-night stay, December 31st to January 15, 2024. Good pre-arrival communication(s) with Owner. Good on-site written home information & instructions. Limited kitchen functionality (small fridge, single burner cooking plate, microwave oven, fully-manual drip coffee pot. Pre-arrival notice by Owner of electrical load limitations/"nuisance trippimg". Instinctively prepared for Japan winter weather sleepwear Traditional home characteristcs include low doorways, and steep narrow 2nd level stairway. More functional living area on 2nd level than 1st. Complimentary ear plugs for sleeping appreciated due to proximity to busy road. Great modern washer/dryer. Relatively convenient (8-13 minute walk) to Skytree and Hikifune subway stations/local restaurants/Izakayas. Family Mart convenience store right next store and grocery store within a couple of blocks. Added/unexpected bonus of home being adjacent to neighborhood Shrine.
We loved the cozy house in a very convenient location 8 min walk to Oshiage sky tree train station. Quiet neighbourhood, close to coffee and perfect place from which to explore Tokyo. Hosts very helpful. Highly recommended.
We stayed 9 nights on our recent trip to Tokyo. It is convenient to Hikifune station but we usually walked to Oshiage Station as the trains were usually more convenient.
The home is a bit older (1950s I believe) but it has some modern conveniences. There is an update bathroom, washer/dryer combo, and many updated kitchen appliances. It is a bit basic but has enough for 2-4 guests. There is also a tv avs dvd player.
The beds are very comfortable. The windows are thin so you'll hear a lot of noise from the road and the trains. It didn't bother my wife and I who live in a busy area, but my mother in law used the ear plugs provided and had no issues.
Each bedroom and the living room have separate ductless heaters/ac.
There is a family mart next door and we picked up breakfast and snacks here to have in the house.
The only drawback was being a tall person I did bonk my head about 12 times on the doorway between the kitchen and living room. But that's expected in older Japanese homes (I did the same in our machiya in Kyoto in 2018).
I would recommend this house if you want to experience traditional Japanese home living. The location is convenient to train stations while being in a lovely residential area. There's a lovely temple right next to the house, a couple of times there were musicians and services being held.
The owners were quite nice and quick to reply if we messaged with any questions.
We would definitely stay here again.
The property was in great condition and had a great feel to it. It is in a great location, perfect for walking around to places and with the shrine so close it is a great introduction when you first arrive into the area.
With our family we enyoyed the stay in this area and house. Coffee and food in the familymarket nearby was very practical. Some nice restaurants, the sumida river is close. We did a walk to Asakusa along the river. With subway everything was reachable, Oshiage skytree gives a good vieuw for a start. The house is clean and individual with a historical charme .The shower and air conditioner worked fine.
We enyoyed the whole stay here and could have stayed longer.
Very cute house if you want a edo style with modern touches. The location is great between two stations. The host are incredible with keeping in contact, recommendations, and knowledge of the area. I would recommend staying here.
It was a perfect visit. The house was everything the listing said and more. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere - it was well thought out.
