About this property

Love Life Within the Walls of One of France's 100 Most Beautiful Villages!

A WONDERFUL LOCATION AND BASE TO EXPLORE SOUTHERN FRANCE.

Our beautiful bastide maison de ville, built in 1353 has recently been lovingly restored while preserving it's original features and resulting in a very comfortable and stylish home with all the charm of medieval life in France.
Living in one of France's 100 Most Beautiful Villages you have the opportunity to enjoy the many fetes, festivals and markets which take place in the Monpazier square - just 50 metres from our front door and the great variety of restaurants, galleries and other attractions within the village.
The experience of having the opportunity to stay inside the walls of Monpazier has exceeded all our expectations and we know it will for you too!
While built in 1353 and having been an Epicerie (grocery and haberdashery) the house has a great layout and is perfect for up to 4 couples or combined families.
The entrance hallway leads you to the open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen area, as well as a downstairs bathroom and an easy flight of stairs to the first floor.
The open plan lounge and dining room has a large fireplace that is perfect for winter evenings, and is adjacent to a modern and well appointed kitchen with scullery, laundry and storage areas (all separate rooms) and is linked to a charming outdoor stone walled courtyard.
The lounge has a luxurious studded leather lounge suite which comfortably seats 8 adults and has a 55' TV with English & French TV programs, stereo and Wi-fi.
The large square dining table seats up to 12 people on high back leather chairs. It's perfect for entertaining or enjoying lovely family meals!
The first floor includes 4 bedrooms dressed with high quality linen and décor, and each with ensuite bathroom including a shower, vanity and toilet. The landing lounge area has seating and chaise lounges to relax in - a lovely space on those hot summer afternoons!
Monpazier was founded in 1284 and built by the English in the reign of Edward 1. It was called the ‘Pearl of the English XIIIth Century Bastide Towns’. While much has happened over the history of time…. that hasn’t changed as it is still referred to as ‘the best preserved bastide in France’. It may seem small however as a well preserved, beautiful bastide and working village it has a great range of shops, restaurants, artisans and attractions.
Cuisine is a big focus of the area and as such, you have 10+ restaurants in the village ranging from casual pizzerias, a creperie and bistros, through to elegant fine dining. Basic provisions are well looked after by the 2 mini-markets (SPAR & Casino) within the village walls and then there's a great range of specialty goods that can be found at the 3 patisserie/boulangerie shops and 2 charcuteries that have an excellent range of meats and deli goods. There's also a wine cellar, organic produce shop, a pharmacy, beauty salon and masseuse..... and the list goes on. You'll be very well catered for and all within walking distance!
Monpazier also has a strong artisan community with a range of wonderful galleries and showrooms including - wood turners/stone craftsmen, glassblower where you can watch your creation being made, a clockmaker, handmade leather goods, traditional soap & perfumery, ceramics showrooms, and ostrich egg engraver, an excellent marquetry display and much, much more.
Monpazier has a colourful weekly market on Thursday mornings. Many of the neighbouring villages have weekly markets on different days of the week making it an excellent way to visit the surrounds and get a flavour of the region. Markets are largely based around the glorious local cuisines and specialty produce of the region – seasonal fruits, mushrooms (cepes), nuts, honey, duck, goose, foie gras and the most luxurious of all….. truffles!
Summer music festivals in Monpazier and most nearby villages are a delight. There are also the many fetes and festivals held throughout the year in our own village square:
Summer:
- Regular Night Markets
- Summer Brocante Market

May:
- Annual Flower & Rose Festival

July:
- Bastille Day Bodega & Fireworks Display

Autumn:
- Guided walks (randonees) in nearby Forests
- Autumn Brocante Market

October:
- Cepes Markets

December:
- Truffle Fete
- Christmas Market

January:
- Truffle Fete
Situated in the south of the Dordogne (one of the most beautiful and most popular areas in France), it’s an area known as ‘The Land of 1001 Chateaux’. Close by you can visit Chateau Biron (8kms), Lanquais (28kms), Milandes (36kms), Castelnaud (38kms) and Beynac (43kms)… to mention just a few. You can also visit the prehistoric cave paintings and limestone caves at Gouffre de Proumeyssac (32kms), Grotte du Grand Roc (40kms), Grotte de Cougnac (57kms) and Grotte de Lascaux (70kms).
We have a lot of information on attractions of the area at Bastide 1353 however the local Tourismo/Information Office is extremely helpful and again – just 50 metres from our front door.

A medieval home just off the Square in Monpazier

This refurbished property is very well presented with lots of stone and timber adding to the sense that this is a very old building. There is ample space for sitting in the evening, and dining for 8 easily accommodated, a convenient and modern kitchen with a scullery and laundry room. The bedrooms are a good size, the floors slope a little in places adding to that sense of time passing. En-suite facilities are modern and work well. The situation is excellent just off the square and yet quiet, there were no issues with parking on the street. We hope that this property is available next time we want to go.

Wonderful House. Wonderful Location.

This house is just gorgeous, with its elegant furniture and luxurious en-suite bedrooms: it feels like a 5 star hotel. The owners, John and Tracy, have thought of every detail to create a very special place, and it was a delight to stay somewhere so lovingly restored. There are so many beautiful items in the house, amazing glasses and crockery and as for the kitchen…fully equipped is an understatement! It’s a dream. The house is in an ideal location: just a 1 minute walk from the main square, with bars, cafés and Monpazier’s interesting independent shops. During our 6 days in Monpazier we visited several of the villages in the Dordogne, and each day it was a joy to return to the house and sit in the stunning courtyard (the photos don’t do it justice). Indeed we whiled away many hours there, eating al fresco throughout our stay. The only problem we have is that, from now on we are destined to compare any rental property to this one, and the bar has been set so high, we are, alas, bound to be disappointed. I can not recommend this house highly enough.

Authentic France; beautiful, romantic and funny.

Our stay was end of season early November when the village goes into a period of pre-Christmas hibernation and autumn is alive and well in all its vibrancy. We arrived the day of the Rugby World Cup final and immediately made our presence known to the locals by joining them in the local Tabac to watch the match. We don't speak French but the evening passed with a great deal of banter and good humour exchanged. The locals were just great and very welcoming. Our stay at Bastide 1353 could not have been more comfortable or enjoyable. Each of the four large double bedrooms upstairs has its own very spacious ensuite which was a big change from some of the hotels we stayed at. We rattled around just being the two of us but it was very peaceful. Down stairs was a comfortably large lounge, Sky TV,dining area and good sized kitchen and butlers pantry. Easy to operate laundry was a real bonus. The property is hundreds of years old but has been restored and maintained to a very high standard. Its was interesting just sitting back and wondering about all the people who had lived there in the past. Surrounded by many other castle towns and vineyards within easy driving distance Monpazier is not just a great base from which to plan your day trips it is in itself a beautiful village made even more enchanting by staying in such a lovely home. I could say much more but why spoil the great surprises you are in for.

Really enjoyed this house. Could do with a few more fans due to excessive heat. Location is ideal!

Very easy to find, open, and comfortable to stay in. We did lots of cooking and enjoyed our strolls through Monpazier daily. Kids could run out and visit local shops and bakeries to pick up food. Very nice.

Awesome stay in beautiful house in Monpazier

What a lovely house in a perfect location! We had a wonderful week in Bastide 1353 Monpazier. We are 6 Aussies: 2 young children 3 and 5 years, their parents and grandparents. All of us loved the house and the ambience of the village . It was such a treat to be able to walk to lunch or dinner in many of the great local restaurants. We loved the breakfast croissants and baguettes from the Boulangerie down the street and the fantastic food from the Boucherie. The kids loved the quiches! Thank you Tracy and John and Sandra for making our stay so memorable. Nola and Ross, Victoria Australia

I have rented a lot of properties in the Dordogne - this house was the most complete - nothing missing. Easy accesss to all the things to visit as well as the town of Monpazier. Easy access to manager as well as owners. Great cleaning arrangements as I was there for several weeks and lastly, delicious welcome treats upon arrival !!

The perfect way to experience France

Bastide 1353 is a great house in an amazing location. Monpazier and the surrounding area is a melting pot of French life, markets, history, great restaurants and squares too while away the day or people watch. The house is just a pleasure to come back too, loads of old characterful features and it has all the facilities you want, lovely furniture and beautiful pieces throughout the house to enjoy. There is a courtyard where we enjoyed breakfast, dinner and a few drinks with our friends. The top of my list were the beds, just so comfortable, best sleep for a long time. Bastide 1353 is only 50 metres away from the town square with its restaurants and bars which are full of life yet when back at the house it is nice and quiet. Absolutely recommend Bastide 1353! Peter

Superb holiday home

Well it's all been said before but it was just perfect. Very charming property set in the middle of a wonderful old village. The owners were most generous with communicating all the great activities in the area and generally just keeping in touch to make sure we had everything we needed. We made great use of the courtyard where we had all our breakfasts and some lunches. The kitchen was beautifully equipped and a godsend for anyone inclined to cook up a storm. However we dined out in the evenings at some quirky restaurants and rather overdosed on duck which seems to be a staple. Also their chickens are quite different to those in Australia - really dense and delicious. Yes, we ate and drank well at this beautiful home and would return in a whisper. Wish it was closer.

PERFECT place for a mid-winter holiday in France

We knew from the reviews that our stay at Bastide 1353 was going to be special, but it exceeded our expectations in every way possible. Where to begin?! The house itself is an absolute gem – it has all the character and quirks you’d expect of a 700 year old house, seamlessly and unobtrusively blended with every twenty-first century convenience you could possibly want. The furniture and furnishings are enchanting and luxurious; the kitchen is a chef’s dream; the 4 bathrooms are immaculate, with excellent water pressure in the showers (one of my absolute non-negotiables!). I felt truly pampered with all the thoughtful touches and attention to detail in every corner of the house. Monpazier itself. Well, it’s easy to see how it earned its placing as one the 100 most beautiful French villages. It’s a total charmer! I loved being able to nip across the street before breakfast each day for fresh bread, and then down to a different boulangerie for pastries later in the day. We enjoyed wandering round the narrow streets noticing different little architectural gems and details on each of our wanders. I also enjoyed popping in and out of the various little shops around the market square while Mike ‘market tested’ yet another red wine at the outdoor tables in the square. The shop and restaurant owners were all very accommodating of our beginner French and our non-French ways! We also found lots to do nearby Monpazier. Things we recommend: have a lovely, very reasonably priced meal at L’Abbey Restaurant in Cadouin (and visit the abbey); go to Domme to see Charles Durret who makes the most stunning jewellery; have a vin chaud at the Christmas market in Sarlat; an evening meal at Leo’s Table in St Avit Sanur is a must; and La Roque Gageac is another must-see village. We sometimes had a relaxed morning in Monpazier, then a trip to explore castles and curiosities in nearby villages, and then back to Monpazier for a restaurant meal or supper at Bastide1353. Being able to have the wood-burning fireplace going was a nice treat when we stayed in, although the house was toasty warm without it. We LOVED our stay at Bastide 1353 (over the Christmas - New Year period). It’s such a special place – beautiful, spacious, comfortable, AND location, location, location! We can’t wait to return.

Luxury Character Home in a Stunning Location!

This is our third visit to Bastide 1353 in the last three years. We love it!!! The house is so welcoming - comfortable luxury, modern amenities yet full of old world character. Four ensuite bedrooms, plush living areas, well equipped kitchen, even an outdoor courtyard for eating outdoors in the summer. It is perfect for 'us oldies' (78 & 82 years young), only 60 steps from the square, where there is shopping to die for (3 Patisseries, 2 Butcheries, 2 Super Markets, Boutiques, Hat Maker, Clock Maker, 2 Glass Blowers, Chemist, Toy Maker, Craft Shops, Brocantes and Galleries), lots of Restaurants and of course - the traditional French Tabac. We love sitting outside at 'Gallerie M' in the square, with our coffee or wine and watching the world go by, just a minutes walk from 'Bastide 1353'. Monpazier is a very beautiful Bastide Village - rightfully designated 'one of the most beautiful in France' and just a short drive to lots of other interesting villages. The weekly market in Monpazier is great and all the surrounding villages have weekly markets, all set on different days, too. Makes for great adventures to pick up your local produce on a daily basis..... The best of French living. Thank you Tracy & John for allowing us to share your beautiful home. It's very special and we highly recommend it for young and old!

Perfect house in the perfect village

Bastide 1353 was the pick of our European holiday accommodation, providing everything needed for a fantastic holiday away from home. There was a choice of 4 beautiful and comfortable bedrooms, each with their own ensuite. The kitchen was a cooks dream with nothing missing. Given the great summer weather, the outdoor terrace was used every day, and the only missing item to crank the star rating to a 6 was a BBQ for us Aussies. Like the house, Monpazier is a beautiful medieval village with all modern facilities, including boulangeries, charcuteries, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and shops. We could have happily stayed within the village for the whole week, but Monpazier was a great central base for exploring the many other villages and places of interest in a day trip. Parking out the front of the house was greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend Bastide 1353 and Monpazier for anyone's French soujourn.

Beautiful, well appointed, perfectly located....

The Bastide is a gem in the crown jewels of the French countryside of the Dordogne. We spent a week enjoying the life of the town, and horseback riding with an old friend, Michel Amat, who is an outfitter for multi-day rides. It was Michel who introduced us to Monpazier on our first point to point ride in France many years ago. I had always hoped to return to Monpazier, the most uniquely beautiful of the French towns we have seen in our travels. This website made it possible to locate John and Tracy's beautiful home, and open a conversation about a visit. For us there were many logistical challenges, because riding was key. But we were able to get that worked out, and we had a fantastic time. We were able to get pretty much everything we needed in the town, esp with Market Day on Thursday. We rode out for a couple of days, and enjoyed the pleasures of Monpazier, including wonderful outdoor meals. The fantastic kitchen and beautiful secluded garden made meal time a wonderful event. The availability of fantastic food and produce in walking distance within the town, including bread baked almost every other hour, was part of the simple pleasures that made this so relaxing. WifI was generally good, with a few hiccups. And the hosts, arranged an interesting set of English speaking TV options through a service called "Manhattan" which I has never seen before. So some English speaking TV, esp news, was very useful, and sometimes enjoyable (a movie channel that was decent). I don't know if Netflix is available in France, but adding that would be a great addition if possible, since your account goes with you....we were able to watch shows in Argentina on our account....nice to be able to have a movie nite in bad weather. Since it was only me and my husband, we were able to have separate bathrooms, and we each used the other room as a dressing room, which was helpful to keep ourselves organized, esp for riding. So even if you are a couple, this house is very nice, if you value a bit more extra space to spread out over a week. The house managers were esp helpful in helping us get a cab from the train station to the town, since we were arriving on a Sunday evening. We used the same service on return. Overall, a wondefrful week in a magical place....

Luxury & Homely Accommodation with Class

This maison de ville was our holiday home base for 3 weeks during August and September. This very well appointed 2 storied home with modern appliances, top end luxury furniture & chattels along with high quality bed linen has been tastefully done to blend in and enhance the romantic experience of living in a 650 year old building made just out of stone and timber beams. After the first day of venturing out into the beautiful historic walled country village and exploring the market square ringed by large medieval stone archways with people enjoying a coffee and croissant sitting under large sun umbrellas and going down many cobble stoned alleyways, browsing in local specialty shops, meeting the local French residents, we returned home to our flash accommodation with our booty. Locally produced and cooked duck, fresh breads, cheeses, fruit and of course the wine!. We settled into the candle lit courtyard. We ate and drank and talked until the early hours in 26 degrees under a clear starry night sky. We felt as though we had won first prize in a lottery. Every day we walked or drove the car out into the surrounding countryside, visiting small towns with market places selling local produce, antiques and crafts. There were castles, vineyards, historic sites and many small narrow country lanes where you would see wild deer standing on the edge of a clearing next to a forest nibbling on green shoots. Farmers fields full of sunflowers, maize, fruit trees and walnut groves. At the end of the day we would return back to base to the courtyard to eat and drink and talk about what we had seen and experienced. There are many restaurants with terrific menus offering the local specialties of the region. The countryside around Monpazier and the Dordogne region is very pretty and magical and no wonder the French Government has given Monpazier the highest heritage rating thus preserving this idyllic Bastide for all to enjoy for generations to come. We cannot praise this accommodation and surrounding countryside high enough. We love the food, the wine, and the local people and a place that can deliver a "sense of occasion". The best holiday we have ever had and we will be back. Ken & Heather Kernohan, Upper Moutere, New Zealand.

CLASSY IN EVERY RESPECT

This place ticked all our boxes in so many ways. Clearly the owners attention to detail has ensured a wonderful blend of old and new all woven into a rich tapestry of comfort. Things like different coat hangers in each room, furniture that is both comfortable yet period, modern showers that fire water from multiple jets and all this against a spotlessly clean presentation. On entry one gets a feeling of luxury and comfort and that continued for our week long stay. Car parking outside the front door makes luggage transfers easy and the location just metres from the village square ensures one is spoilt for choice of the many restaurants that abound this area - not to mention the shops. That said the kitchen rivals a professional unit and the large dining table is a focus for fine dining and wholesome conversation. We found that because the residence is so close to the village square one tends to spend more time meandering through its streets at all different times, exploring the walls, the old buildings, the church and yes, yet again, the shops. The bakery over the road ensures fresh bread is the daily ritual for breakfast. Whilst in Monpazier take the time to explore the village and its environs. They even have a rugby field close by and when we were there a huge equestrian event was taking place with entrants from all over Europe and the Middle East. We used Monpazier as a base to explore villages and sites nearby. They are all within 30 - 45 minute drives. You will find many recommendations in the well presented compendium attached to the residence. We did, and loved every one of them. Special mention of La Roque Gageac and do take the one hour river trip. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would and most definitely would return.

Exceeded all Expectations!!

We stayed for 3 weeks in this wonderful house with another couple, from New Zealand. As with most people, we do substantial research, before booking a property/holiday location. So, after seeing the photos online, of the house and reading about the village of Monpazier, we had great expectations of what was to come. After collecting our hire car from Bordeaux airport and driving, we began the approx 2 hour drive to Monpazier. The roads got smaller and smaller and the scenery prettier and prettier - at one point right through vineyards, with glimpses of the mandatory magnificent chateaux perched high in the hill sides. And so it was, that we arrived in Monpazier, at our new home for the next 3 weeks. First impressions were of the beautiful street, where the house was located - the mairie just opposite and most of all, proximity to the village square (approx 30m). So far, this was awesome! Then we went into the house... and spent the next 15 mins walking around and around, absolutely smitten! Yes the photos looked good, but this was even better than we could have imagined - it was perfect! Beautifully and tastefully decorated, with a fully equipped kitchen (and butlers pantry), a fantastic courtyard and bedrooms (4) with gorgeous linen (each with its own bathroom). We were a group of two couples, but we also had 2 lots of visitors coming to stay from England and Germany - they were going to be impressed! The village is picture postcard - with every facility and wonderful, friendly people. We only ventured out of the village probably only every 2nd or in some cases every 3rd day. Our brief was to experience an authentic village experience, without the usual tourist rushing around. Having said that, they was an enormous amount to see and do within the area - we never drove for more than an hour and a half away from our base and still there were places that we never managed to visit. I would recommend this house and the village of Monpazier, without hesitation - I don't think it gets any better than this!

Location, location, location!

This wonderful residence is luxurious and spacious and so well located in terms of the village of Monpazier itself (just a few paces from the villages beautiful square) and the surrounding towns, all so very beautiful and historic. The house itself easily accommodates up to 8 people as there are four beautifully appointed rooms, and comes complete with every luxury you could possibly want or need, including a stunning outdoor entertaining area. This would be a perfect holiday home for a group of friends, family or extended family....highly recommend.

An Absolute Treasure of a Property

This property is a stunner, a very high quality of presentation with a beautiful interior and many period features/ antiques. A modern kitchen with all modern appliances leads to a private courtyard , just perfect for breakfast or a pre dinner drink. The double bedrooms all have en suites and excellent quality mattresses and linens. This was a very comfortable place to stay. The village itself is a real beauty and the village square is a very short walk away from the property. The village has a great range of shops and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our restaurant meals, especially at night when the lights came on in the square, it's a magical place. We were also fortunate to be staying in the village when the market day was held.We attended many markets during our visit to France and this was certainly one of the best. Monpazier is very central for visiting other villages , many being an easy car drive away. We highly recommend this property to other travellers , it really is a beauty. G & J Bird

Fabulous stay in Monpazier.

Just had a fabulous stay at Monpazier. This stunning, newly renovated home had everything we required-top end furniture, bedding, appliances and a great outdoor area to entertain/relax in. Only 50metres from the town square we had many restaurants and bars to choose from, and lovely artisan shops to browse. Best still enjoyed getting the freshly made crossiants from the patisserie right across the road. There is a weekly market in the square. Also many historic sites and villages are within s short distance of Monpazier which made this place a great hub to see the wider Dordogne area. We cannot speak more highly of this property and thoroughly recommend it to all travellers.

Why they chose this property

After a year and hundreds of hours searching, onsite and on the internet, for not only the best property to suit our needs but the best region and town in France to live, we settled on this property in Monpazier and have not been disappointed.

What makes this property unique

Part of our criteria in choosing location and property was to be in a small, well serviced village with a range of amenities and yet still a strong historical sense and beauty. We wanted to be able to be close to many attractions for day trips..... so we could do as much or as little as we wanted when on vacation, and also be able to walk out our front door and have a selection of cafes/restaurants (at all times of the year) and activities that were in walking distance, so not having to rely on having transport.
Monpazier has delivered on all of that. The village and warm welcome of its residents is simply stunning!
