About this property

Vintage 1920s House W/Beach Path & Glorious Sunset Water Views

*** Please make an inquiry before booking. ***

This quintessential Up-Island 1920s summer house has panoramic water sunsets thanks to its hillside position overlooking the Vineyard Sound. (An East Coast novelty to look west over water.) The view spans the Menemsha Harbor, Menemsha Bight, Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah, Elizabeth Islands, and, on clear days, all the way past Buzzards Bay to the mainland.

Day or night it doesn't get any more Vineyard than taking in the breathtaking views from the tranquil deck. The sun's final dunk into the sea is sometimes heralded—depending on the direction of the breezes—by the faint sound of applause up from Menemsha Beach picnickers who see a slightly earlier sunset from their lower vantage point a half mile away.

The house has three bedrooms—two upstairs and one downstairs—plus a queen sleeper sofa in the living room, and a small loft which overlooks the living room.

The house is full of light and air with a cathedral ceiling and many windows, plus the original, working stone and brick fireplace opens on two sides to the living room and the kitchen. There are two bathrooms, and a bathtub downstairs and an outside shower. There is a also a side deck with a shaded hammock.

Modern conveniences include wireless highspeed Internet, iTunes wireless audio, flat screen TV with DVD and DirecTV satellite, linens, washer/dryer, and dishwasher.

The house has been in our family for more than forty years, and our grandparents first stayed as renters in the early 1940s. In one family story, our grandmother reported a sighting of a possible German submarine one night to the Coast Guard station, only to be told drily by the dutyman that she had correctly decoded the (then) three-whites-a-red signal of the Gay Head Lighthouse. They named the house Menucha, as a biblical reference to rest and tranquility that plays on the village's Wampanoag name of Menemsha. As an umpire of the Sunday softball game, our grandfather was also famous for his idiosyncratic strike zone.

Hillside walking path to Vineyard Sound beach and Menemsha harbor, or take house bikes to Menemsha dock, Chilmark and Lucy Vincent ocean beach.

Quintessential Vineyard Experience

Not only was the property a slice of history, it was quiet and secluded enough that we felt like we had the area to ourselves. Perfect for a reunion trip with life-long friends. Nathaniel made us feel like we were truly guests in his home - welcoming us to enjoy the amenities as if we had known him personally. The kitchen was well-appointed, so, based on great recommendations from Nathaniel, we sourced most of our meals from local farm stands and spent time cooking and taking in the sunset from the large deck. We walked the shore to Menemsha Beach, took in the sites of the various other towns, went to the Alpaca Farm, etc. enjoying each for its different experience. There were five of us and we each, except for two twins in one room, had a private space. The garage was available for storing my bikes when it rained. When it turned cold & blustery for one evening, we made use of the fireplace and our comfort was never compromised. I can see why this is often booked so far in advance with repeat customers. We wanted for nothing all week. Thank you!

Expectations exceeded

Our stay could not have been more perfect. The owners pre stay communication was excellent. During our stay he was available (via text) to answer any questions we might have. An excellent cottage information package was provided provided as soon as we booked our stay and was very helpful in explaining the cottage features and history as well as a helpful list of area hikes and activities. We LOVED the cottage! The owner has taken great care to sympathetically renovate the cottage. The living room was choc-a-block full of character. A noteworthy feature was the fireplace in both the living room and the kitchen. The deck was spacious and the view was spectacular. There are two nearby fish markets. We had fabulous fresh fish each evening. We had an accomplished cook in our group and she found everything needed to prepare memorable meals. We also enjoyed the Webber grill. We would return in a heartbeat!

Perfect weekend

My family and I had a fantastic stay at the house. It was beautiful (with amazing sunsets and a fun winding trail to the beach), clean, and in a quiet location though accessible to many things. The owner was always available to connect to answer any questions we had in advance of our trip and while we stayed at the house. We will recommend this house to our friends and try to come back as well!

While there are enough beds for more, my husband and I found the cottage perfect for the two of us. The owner quickly responded to any questions we had and we found the house really nicely equipped.

A dreamy escape

A perfect, relaxing week on the quieter part of Martha's Vineyard. The cottage was exactly as described. Quaint, clean, stocked with everything you could need. We spent most of our time on the deck, as the weather was beautiful and the view/outdoor space was breathtaking.

Charming property with spectacular sunsets

Quaint classic vineyard property with a spectacular view from a wonderful deck. Can't say enough about the sunsets while eating dinner outside. The cottage was very clean and well stocked. Plenty of space for a family to use as a home base while exploring the island. Have been coming to the Vineyard for years and definitely will come back to this place.

Charming Retreat

A charming house filled with lots of character and history. Breathtaking views, only add to this quiet and peaceful location. Breakfast on the deck each morning and cozy fires in the stone fireplace each night, make the experience complete. Owners were very responsive with questions, and helpful with entire process. Thank you Nathaniel. We will always have beautiful memories of this special place.

Absolutely wonderful experience from beginning to end! I’ve never rented a house with such a perfect view, privacy, a perfect combination of historic, yet updated, and so well stocked (kitchen, paper products, toiletries, towels, etc.). The owner was very easily accessible by phone, and was eager to make sure the house was the right fit for my group. I’d stay every weekend if I could!

Beautiful place to stay in Menemsha!

The pictures of this house do not do it justice! It is a quintessential Menemsha cottage that is very well equipped, spotless, and has a view a Menemsha Harbor and the Vineyard Sound that is gorgeous. The sunsets at night are unbelievable! The home owner is a pleasure to work with and very responsive. We will be back!

Tranquility with a wonderful ocean view

A unique experience in a cookie cutter world. A step back in time. A real home away from home & it's owner is extremely hospitable & helps in any way he can to make your stay top notch. We couldn't wait to return to the house after our daily exploration of the island. The house is tucked away on a narrow curving lane. Expansive windows on the ocean side give you ocean views & plenty of natural light from anywhere in the living area of the house. Large porch with 2 lounge chairs & table, unobstructed views of the coastline(although there are houses nearby they are invisible because of the thick foliage. This was our favorite place to read, unwind & have an afternoon cocktail(gorgeous sunsets!) Kitchen is well equipped & clean but note there is no microwave. FAVORITE MEMORIES--Open windows at night. Lulled to sleep with the sound of ocean, the dong of the buoy & occasional fog horn. Picking up dinner at Larsens Fish Market in Menemsha village & walking along deserted beach with Shannon(our dog). Path to beach behind house or drive there in 5 mins. We also took Shannon on walks along the lane. Very rarely did we see anyone. Middle Road-Pastoral drive with changing fall colors and stone walls transported us back to Britain & Ireland. Granary Gallery-Surprise was the quality of the art. Even if you're not buying worth seeing. Black Dog Shop-we couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs Only one criticism-Size & positioning of TV for viewing.

Awesome honeymoon

We picked Martha's Vineyard for our honeymoon destination for the last week of October. We were looking for a gorgeous spot that would be quiet and a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of our every day, and we found it! This cottage was the perfect place for us to land while we explored as much of the island as we could. The house sits in the best spot for sunset each night, and has an easy walk down to the beach. We loved coming in October because it was so quiet and perfect in the fall, although we will definitely come in warmer weather so we can enjoy the beach for more than walks! The house was very well equipped- the kitchen had anything we could need for cooking, there were plenty of sheets, blankets, and towels. The stars were incredible at night. This cottage was super cozy with a fire. The Wice Family also provided access to their bikes and beach equipment, although we didn't have a chance to use them this time! They were also very easy to communicate with throughout the rental process, and encouraged us to reach out with any questions. We will definitely make our way back, next time with friends or family!

A Delightful Home with Dazzling Views

Nicely nestled in the woods with stunning views from every room and a spectacular sunset deck that will knock your flip flops off, you will find it very difficult to ever venture far from this impeccably finished homestead. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic location or a more charming and tasteful “back to basics“ island cottage - replete with outdoor shower. Hit the trail and stroll down to the beach for an afternoon swim or hop on a bike and pedal down the road to Menemsha for seafood right off the boat. Fine restaurants, general stores, the farmers market - everything is within easy reach. With hosts who attend to every detail, we hope to visit again for a third year!

Unbelievable sunset and ocean views

My family has stayed here three times and all of the reviews are completely accurate. The views are amazing. The cottage has everything you need. The location is great and the property is very secluded. The owners are so nice and enjoyable to deal with. If you're looking for someplace fancy, this isn't it. If you're looking for a great location with tons of character, there isn't any place better.

Charming cottage with stunning view.

We had a lovely week in early June in this comfortable, well equipped cottage. We particularly enjoyed the private setting, charming decor, beautiful deck and panoramic views of Vineyard Sound and Menemsha. We took great advantage of the copies of the trail maps and guides and took hikes, mostly in Chilmark, which were fantastic. This part of the island is special and we hope to return.

Up-Island Paradise

My family has stayed here two summers in a row. We really just can't get enough of this wonderful, historic home, owned by a kind and attentive family. I could never tire of having morning coffee on the deck with a dramatic ocean view expanding before my eyes, the soothing sounds of the bell buoy and fishing boats driving into Menemsha with their hauls of fresh, delicious seafood. I could never get enough of the spectacular sunset over the ocean, replete with applause from the people down at the town beach, a short walk away. The house is quiet, sun dappled, well-stocked, and clean. The location is hard to beat; it is a special place. We will come back here whenever we can.

Amazing view

Stayed in this house with seven adults - six would be most comfortable, but we made it work easily. House has a great, old beachy feel - no frills, but very cozy, authentic vacation home. Most noteworthy is the absolutely incredible panoramic view of the water. Also has it's own path down to the beach. We had a fantastic time, and would love to stay in this house again.
