A stone throw south of the Austin City Limits, this cabin is situated in 2.5 wooded acres. Luxurious and fairly quiet. It is inhabited by deer, hawks, rabbits, owls, lizards a fox and butterflies. There is an old stone well filled by an aquifer (legend states the well was built by Ben McCullough; a Brigadier-General soldier in the Texas Revolution). A large back yard is used for walks, bonfires and golfing/batting balls. Lounge in the dappled sun on the patio near a running pond surrounded with gardens. Prepare a leisurely bar-b-que. Talk late into the night by the fire pit or take a dip in the swim lane for a massage in its current. Bluetooths available. The idea is "just come, its probably here" . This 100+ yr old cabin has been revived and furnished with love. Time seems to stop while soaking in the deep old claw tub filled with endless hot spring water . Lounge on the shaded patio Quality mattress with brown out shades. Its possible you'll be tempted to stay all day. However, the center of Austin or San Marcos, with music, swimming, fishing and kayaking are just 15-25 minutes from this retreat. Sound like a fit for you? A toll road will deliver you from the airport to the cabin and the event without the Austin traffic. Also close and south is an after race restaurant popular with race participants. Note for SXSW and other major events: Consider being in the crowds day and night then retreating by the fire at your quiet abode just 15 minutes south from all the ruckus of Central Austin. Invite your friends to hang with you and perhaps make your own music. Guests under 21 welcomed. ACL 1 & 2: center of town is generally 20 minutes. I interact with guests as much as they want. Usually, an initial orientation to the cabin and grounds, then texting for the morning "I'm hungry" call, or "I'm returning, please get the fire ready". There are times I am encouraged to visit at the fire and I really enjoy doing so. I will be isolating to the tune of 2 meters distance. Within a mile: Several Wedding Venues Texas Keepers Cidery Restaurants: El Paso Mexican, Taco Bar, BBQ Liquor store Within 3 miles: MoonTower Saloon with comedy Club, GittyUp Saloon, Several other music venues, Grocery Store, Golf Multiple restaurants Lady Bird Wildflower Center 5 miles Three miles away, there is a public bus which goes directly (no transfers) to the center of Austin. When schedule allows, I offer rides as needed to/from the bus at no additional charge. Drive to the center of Austin depends upon timing but generally can be between 15 to 25 minutes. There is an alternate toll route from the airport which avoids Austin traffic, please check your GPS. Your cabin is located on the property where the host lives. It is private-semi secluded- and very safe. Stars are dimmed from the Austin and nearby lights while cars and a train whistle can be heard. I am working towards a wildlife/native habitat refuge; with our neighbor, there is 18 acres (which contributes to the country feeling however 15 acres are not available to guests.). Under the cabin, on occasions, we are visited by a critter or two. This is a rare but does mutually surprise us all - after dusk of course. Property is fed by an underground aquifer with a soft water system and reverse osmosis installed. Holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas have a minimum stay of 3 nights required. This is also true for SXSW and F1. ACL is 2 nights. Weekends are 2 nights minimum.

Manchaca cabin

Convenient location to Austin attractions in a quiet country setting. Grandkids loved playing in the swim spa/hot tub. Lots of room to walk our dog. It is close to a train track so some train noise.

Country cottage in outskirts of Austin

This charming guest cottage qualifies as the original shabby chic. The owner is very friendly and helpful with orientation to the property, which is large and rambling.

A cozy stay with a wonderful host

Tamara was so welcoming and accommodating! We loved our brief stay, and she was more than willing to help us out when needed. The bed was comfortable. There were plenty of tasty snacks provided. Our dog was quite comfortable, and loved exploring the large property with us. Highly recommend staying here!

Cute and quirky, like Austin used to be

The property was natural and inviting, fire pits in multiple locations, fully furnished with wood and supplies. Charcoal grill was great. Large swimming spa was exceptional! The cottage was small and inviting with a comfy bed and everything necessary to have a great time. I highly recommend this place!

Our old neighborhood

This was a visit to our old neighborhood and we were not able to spend time at the VRBO. It’s a great location and provided a perfect base of operations. The Tom turkey named Christmas was frisky but not a problem for an old farm boy.

It's never a good sign when you're not sure which cabin on the property is yours. It is an even worse sign when you find the cabin and realize it already has a tenant who has locked you out.

Staycation Relaxation!

I'm an Austinite who needed a break from city life. This little cabin is just outside city limits, so you can still get everywhere in Austin or Hill Country spots. I loved the cute place and Tamara is a great and friendly host. My dog loved meeting tame turkeys, and I loved seeing deer, hummingbirds, etc. The private courtyard has a little pond and everything you need to chill out with friends. Gotta say the icing on the cake is the swim spa-- me and my friends really enjoyed getting out of the Texas sun and heat. Recommended!

Wonderful Experience!

What a wonderful three days spent in our own little private oasis. Tamara is an excellent communicator and went out of her way to make our time at Breathe Deeply special. She had flowers waiting in our room (upon my request), everything prepared for a fire, and fairy lights queued. The outdoor spaces were dreamy (the fairy lights were everywhere and really made it feel magical), the fire pit area was spacious and private, the patio was lovely for outdoor cooking (indoor cooking space also lovely), and the hot tub/pool was excellent. Plus there is plenty of room for activities in an open green space. The lovely yellow cottage was a wonderful space for two and if you love a clawfoot tub soak, this place is for you. We will definitely be returning on our next trip to central Texas.

Super cute cozy studio

This was by far the best place I have stayed in a long time. What an amazing experience. This place gives a sense of a retreat and sanctuary. Tamara was very on point with communication and support. Also, Landers, he lives in the property. What an amazing man, he helped me out with my rides and share cool places to visit. The hot tub/pool is like an oversized hot tub. Perfect addiction to this experience. I will always stay at this place if available whenever I visit Austin. Btw, this is not a place for a family. Could be a romantic getaway or for a single person. Bed was super comfy, AC, heater, kitchenette. Thank you again Tamara and Landers, I’ll be back soon

Turkeys

Owner was nice and helpful/available. Cabin and hot tub/lap pool were clean but the outside property needed some upkeep. Cabin was hot, the window unit was not enough for that space and would not cool off until around 11pm. But the worst thing was the owner had some free range turkeys that were a little bothersome. Every time we were outside during the day, they were right there like we were supposed to feed them, they got a little too close for comfort, one of them even got on the hood and roof of my car!

Good stay, a bit misleading

We stayed here with our 2 year old and our dog. We chose this place for location, pet friendly and the land. The property was very beautiful and conveniently located. Communication with our host was very easy and they were responsive. My only feedback with the property would be that we believed there was a private room for sleeping. We were unaware that it was an efficiency so that made it difficult with my toddler. It would be helpful if they updated the photos to show the one bed , and the entire space. There are duplicate photos of the bed with different comforters which you would think were different bedrooms. Only other issue is that I didn’t realize that there would be other dogs on the property. There were 3 other dogs which made us nervous for our dog because she has been attacked before. We would not have brought her with knowing this beforehand. There is no pool, but there is a jacuzzi. Again, overall a nice stay just some misleading information.

Very quaint and unique cottage

I enjoyed my stay at the cute yellow cottage for my stay in Austin. The location worked perfectly for me for my holistic health training course which was only 10 minutes away. Tamara really is a wonderful host and generously provided me with a couple things I needed for my stay. She even went out and bought a crock pot so I could cook in the cottage. There was a small water issue but she responded immediately and got everything in working order again on the spot. Her place feels very rural and is submersed in nature with deer that come visit and she even has friendly turkeys that roam the property. She also has an amazing swim spa that feels amazing in the hot summer days of Austin weather. I would recommend this cottage for anyone wanting a relaxing, peaceful place to stay close to Austin.

About the host

Hosted by Tamara Trager

Host profile image
I'm a semi retired pediatric social worker. I grew up around the states and in Southeast Asia. Went to college in Connecticut, Mexico, on World Campus Afloat and finally years later, with lots of gaps for traveling, graduated at the University of Texas in Austin. After my two sons were successfully launched; one's an elite athlete and fireman and the other a pediatric PA, I began renovating the property as a nature preserve and guest house. I have now successfully hosted over a thousand guests and have expanded my exposure in hopes of enjoying an ever growing community of travelers. I love hosting and focus on making sure your travels are as pleasurably memorable as mine have been.

Why they chose this property

As a child, I always fantasized living in an old wooden home with lots of windows in a picturesque setting; the types often seen in the Grimm's fairy tale pictures. When I was ready to buy, I only looked at one home, one not usually on the market, a home typical of the 30's in Austin but now in a large wooded area just outside the southern city limits. As I walked onto the property my heart knew 'this is a grandmother's home!' and I was sold. Now, I garden endlessly with the goal of attracting birds, butterflies and all the small creatures seeking a haven. After all the traveling, I've found my Grimm Brothers' home and I am eager to share it with others.

What makes this property unique

I enjoy the fireflies and crickets, late night fires on the patio by the pond, enticing birds and humming birds to nest nearby, and, watching the fawns frolic. A moment later, I can spontaneously leave my retreat to join friends in town to enjoy Austin's great fare and Central Texas's wonderful rivers, all within minutes from my home.
