About this property

Cozy and quiet northern cabin with fabulous lake views and screen porch.

Welcome to the Puffin Ln Cottage, we're so excited to share it with you! Located 2.5 miles off M95 on Island Lake in Republic, this cute cottage has plenty of amenities for your Up North getaway. The cottage has a large living room for all your friends and family to gather. There is a updated and fully stocked kitchen, walk-in pantry, breakfast bar and large dinette. Escape the bugs and the rain on the screened porch with beautiful lake views. Bedroom 1 is on the main level with a king sized bed. Bedroom 2 is on the second level and has 2 full beds and 4 twin beds (bunk beds). Outside is a large deck with seating, a quaint firepit area, and a private dock. The lake has a rocky entry and is immediately 2-3ft deep then goes to 5 feet pretty quickly. The max depth on this side of the lake is 11', but does have a deeper hole on the other side of the island that's around 30'. This cottage is located behind the island and cannot be seen from the main road, which adds to the private nature of this cottage. Island Lake is around 50 acres and plenty of scenery to enjoy while kayaking. **Please note that the last 3/4 of a mile is a two track road that is rutty and rocky. An SUV or larger vehicle is best on this road. The bright side of that is no one is going to be zipping up and down the road, so it's very quiet back by us! At this cottage you're about 15 minutes to South Republic, 20 to North Republic, 50 minutes from Marquette and Lake Superior. Nearest full grocery store is in Ishpeming, about 35-40 minutes away, although basic items can be bought in both South and North Republic, including gasoline. My favorite things to do: Have all you can eat spaghetti dinner at the Summer Place in North Republic, then jump into the Pine Grove next door for an Old Fashioned. Take a day trip (or half day) to Marquette and spend some time relaxing and rock picking at Lake Superior. Be sure to eat at one of their fabulous restaurants and shop their charming downtown. Take a day trip to see waterfalls. Some of our favorites are Bond Falls, Dead River Falls, and Canyon Falls. All of which are about 1-1.5 hours away, so leave in the morning and be back by lunch! At the cottage, play games on a rainy day in the screen porch. Enjoy a s'mores by the fire. Spend the day swimming, kayaking, and watching eagles.

Awesome property

We had a great time vacationing as a family! The kids had a blast learning how to kayak, exploring the lake, jumping off the dock, and fishing!

Great place to stay in the UP

We had a great, relaxing stay. This cabin is pretty remote, but if you are looking to unwind and unplug it is perfect. It has all the essentials needed: kitchen stuff, towels, games, kayaks, life jackets, dvds, blankets, fire pit, etc.. Be sure to bring bottled water for drinking, we used tap for cooking and coffee.

Clean comfortable cabin

Everything was great, we were warned about the smelly water so we planned accordingly. The night skies were incredible. We bird hunted from dawn to dusk so we didn’t take advantage of the lake or outdoor features. Overall a great place to hang out.

Father/Sons get away

A week a friend and myself get to spend with our adult sons. Worked out fantastic for our trip. No Internet or satellite TV was a little bit of a downer at first but we adjusted and actually got to spend more time together.

The most perfect getaway we've ever had so far...

I can't say enough about this rental. Extremely remote! No cell coverage, no WiFi, and 40 minutes anything! Loved it. Cabin was wonderful. Clean. Plenty of room for the five of us. Came with kayaks that the kids used everyday. We fished everyday on our very own lake 20ft from the cabin. I personally loved the knotty pine of the older section of the cabin. Absolutely loved the screened in back porch, sat there most morning drinking my coffee. Met Jim and Lisa that lived at the end of the two track getting to the cabin. Extremely nice people. Over all it was such a great time the kids asked if we could go back 2 weeks next year. The only 2 issues we had were very minor. First, one bathroom for the 5 of us took a lot of work with showers, bathroom breaks, and getting ready. Second, was the iron in the water. The water in the toilet, shower, faucet and ice maker all had a brown tinge. We had bottled water already to drink so it wasn't a huge deal.

About the host

Hi! We are Dave and Kristin Burkart. We are from a charming little town just north of Milwaukee. We have family in the area and spend a lot of time here in the U.P. We rented cabins for many, many years before we bought our own. We love being hosts because we know how many memories are made at cottages in the woods and love providing a space for friends and families to gather and have a wonderful time together.

Why they chose this property

I learned to swim and fish in the lakes in this area. There is something so beautiful and peaceful about this part of the U.P. There might not be many attractions near by but we love that. We love enjoying the quiet, watching nature, the smell of fresh air. The beauty and quaintness of this area is truly unmatched.

What makes this property unique

The expansive lake views, and Island Lake being a very quiet and peaceful lake. Having a screened porch is a huge bonus, especially on buggy nights. Part of this cottage is so cozy and charming, but it also has modern upgrades so guests have the comfort of home.
