Numero CIR 097006-CNI-00001
---
We would like our guests to know that we have taken all the necessary steps to be a safe and clean environment. We are following the guidelines provided by the WHO and CDC, along with our own Regional Regulations issued by Regione Lombardia.
We want our structure to be accessible but make sure it stays clean. It’s a collective effort in which every one of us is involved, from our staff to our guests.
In case anyone would like further information on the matter, we redirect you to the World Health Organisation website and the Regione Lombardia general business regulations.
---
Immersed in 5 hectares of rolling green lawn and trees, the Villa has 5 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms (including 2 half bathrooms). Recent renovations have brought the parquet and marble floors to their original 19th c. lustre, and at the same time have added important creature comforts such as a new gourmet kitchen, air-conditioning, marble bathrooms and high-speed internet. Importantly, the owners are available to help you plan your northern Italian visit with bespoke itinerary suggestions and reservations help. Stays of 6 days or more include a mid-week cleaning service.

The large, comfortable Villa, spread over two floors and 500 square metres, is appointed with tasteful furnishings, comfortable beds and pillows and beautiful detailing throughout. The Villa makes up the lion's share of the building; 2 smaller flats used by family and the caretaker have separate entrances.

An adjacent lodge, private to our Villa guests, has ping-pong and foosball tables, in addition to croquet, badminton and bocce sets to play on the adjoining lawn. The property is located on a hill overlooking the surrounding towns and countryside. The locality is called “Poggio Verde” which means Green Hill.

Our recently refurbished swimming pool is a pure pleasure for lap swimmers and children. Shared with family members, it measures an ample 20 meters by 8 meters.

This lovely Italian country villa is ideally located for visitors wishing to explore northern Italy, from Milan just 50 minutes to the south to Bellagio & Lake Como in the foothills of the Alps just minutes to the north.

Outstanding northern Italian dining and things to see and do - culture and recreational - surround our home. At Poggio Verde we take special care of our guests, booking them into our favorite nearby trattorias, farm-to-tables, or Michelin restaurants, suggesting itineraries and facilitating their stay however we can, both before in the planning stages of their visit, as well as during their stay. We are well connected to surrounding service providers and we can arrange extras such as chef services, cooking lessons, a driver and extra cleaning at guests’ request. Please see further details on ilpoggioverde com.

(There is the possibility of 6 additional bedrooms, in an adjacent part of the building; these are not available during the summer months; see the Poggiò Verde Residenza on HomeAway.)

Our goal as your hosts is to make your stay at Poggio Verde as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. We know the area very well and are happy to put this knowledge at your disposal. We are standing by to assist you, even before you come, so that your stay fully lives up to your expectations.

Family time in Italy

We took our adult children, spouses and one year old granddaughter to Italy to be able to spend time together. Gretchen was a marvelous host. She communicated with me in advance to help me arrange a boat tour of Lake Como, gave lots of info about surrounding area, restaurants, and shops. The Villa and grounds are very impressive. Large, beautiful, accommodates a large group and yet child friendly. Bonus, handicap accessible. Hope to return again some day!

Amazing property

We had a lovely stay at this beautiful home. The house is very spacious and grand, dating back to the 1400s. The property is gorgeous, including a great swimming pool and game room for the kids (ping ping, foosball and bocce). The host was extremely responsive and helpful both before and during our stay. She even arranged a private chef dinner for us one night, which was wonderful!

Perfection

We stayed at the villa for a few days following a two week tour of Italy. The home and grounds are beautiful and relaxing. We had a chef cook a home cooked meal one night and the proximity to Milan and surrounding lakes. We loved the peaceful nature of the home and all the history. I cannot wait to return!

Wonderful historic place with lots of atmosphere

We were a group of three parties with children between 2 and 16 years. The place is perfect as there is lot of space inside and outside. We really loved the terrace with and without roof to enjoy the magnificent view over the huge garden and the landscape. Gretchen was perfect in contact and help.

Beyond Words of Perfection

My family and extended family, a party of 10, booked Poggio Verde for 4 nights in June. Communication with Gretchen the year leading up to the stay was effective, quick, professional and friendly. I am not sure that I am able to properly express the glorious time we had with Gretchen, her family, and at the property. It was like arriving in a dream!!! The most beautiful and historical home. The property and grounds were very clean and well maintained. Its hosts were the epitome of hospitable and caring hosts. Our family made the most glorious of memories while staying at the beautiful villa. 11 out of 10 in every category! Thank you, Gretchen and Luigi, for blessing us with sharing your home with us!

Gorgeous estate, convenient location

We highly recommend staying at Poggio Verde. The home is spacious and beautiful, with every amenity we needed for a restful stay. The secluded hilltop setting offered a stunning view of the surrounding area, a large private patio, grill, and gazebo, and a large pool. We did our grocery shopping in the town 5 minutes away and went out for gelato to two different shops in nearby towns. We ventured out during the days about one hour in every direction for hikes, lakes, “canyoning”, castles, and Milan, not to mention the beautiful drives along the way. Gretchen and her staff were so attentive and personal, offering tips and suggestions for every aspect of our stay.

More than a villa

This house, part of which was built in the 1500s, is more than a villa: it's a total experience. The entire estate is imbued with the feel of a grander era, from the statuary in the hedges, to the manicured lawns, to the high-ceilinged bedrooms, to the artful sconces in the upstairs hallway, to the illuminated statue at the bottom of the stairs, to the magnificent views. The house is decorated with original art, lots of books, and comfortable furniture in almost every room. There's a sense of luxuriousness and well-planned design everywhere you turn, and Gretchen couldn't have been more accomodating. She even picked up two members of our party from the train station, which we were deeply grateful for. I can't recommend Villa Poggio Verde higly enough. The extra bonus is the list of day trips provided by Gretchen, all of which provided to be memorable experiences.

Perfection

From the time we arrived until we reluctantly left, it was spectacular. Gretchen is a superb host who had an answer or suggestion for all our inquiries. From day trips, booked events, restaurants, and wine shops, everything was the best. The home is elegant with every amenity you would need. The property is well maintained - wonderful scents from the garden enticed us outside. The lap pool is spotless and was used daily. Chef Maria was the icing on the cake. Our last meal was fantastic. Maria is warm, the consummate professional, and the evidence is in her excellent food. Highly recommend!!

Beautiful house with classic furnishings in a lovely rural setting

We loved our stay - Gretchen was so welcoming and helpful. She introduced us to the property and assisted with restaurant recommendations and suggestions of places to see. It is a bucolic setting, which we relished - some may find the location slightly isolated, but Milan is only an hour or so away, and the lakes about an hour and a half. Virtually all en-suite bedrooms were ideal for our party which included people from 9 to 83, and the well equipped kitchen was a pleasure to cook in. We were there during a heat wave, and the benefit of air conditioning in all the rooms (and the kitchen!) cannot be stressed enough! There is huge pool as well. Fantastic local restaurants nearby, but great supermarkets 7-10 minutes away for those who wish to stay home - Gretchen can also arrange for catering! We will certainly look forward to returning should we get the opportunity. Geoff & Emma, London/Hawaii

Unforgettable! Do not miss a chance to stay here

Il Poggio Verde is an incredibly spacious villa situated in close proximity to Milan, Lake Como and many other wonderful destinations. Our family stayed for a week in August with another family of four. We had 4 kids between us, ages 10-13. The swimming pool was gorgeous and immaculate. The kids enjoyed the ping pong and the foozball in the game room. There is a giant screen with a projector in the parlor so we had nightly movies in this home theater by connecting our laptop to the projector. The kitchen was fully stocked and we enjoyed both cooking at home, fine dining locally and even one night hired a chef to cook for us. The grounds and gardens were beautiful and well maintained. We had planned to do day trips daily but couldn't resist the charms of the villa and spent two full days lounging by the pool. Angeline was extremely helpful with suggestions, dinner reservations, and answering questions as they came up. We have been traveling in different European countries with our friends for five years in a row now and this was far and away our best experience. You won't regret it. Ciao Il Poggio Verde- we already miss you!!

A Magical 10 days

My family of 9 just returned home after 10 extraordinary days at Villa Poggio Verde. Combining both elegance and comfort, the villa is a magical spot. It has the graciousness of a century old home with the amenities of the 21st century. A fully equipped kitchen. A/C in all the bedrooms. Good wifi. A movie room. Child friendly with toys and a crib. A fabulous pool with floats and toys. Even yoga mats. We prepared elegant dinners that we ate on the stunning porch overlooking the vistas of Lombardy. The villa is perfectly situated for exploring Lombardy and the small towns on Lake Como. If you are lucky enough to rent Villa Poggio Verde, you will experience the same magic we did.

perfect vacation

The villa in Poggio Verde was much more than anything we expected. We nearly didn't see the surrounding, because we didn't want to leave it... The swimming pool, the badminton court, the ping pong table, the piano room, the kitchen and other facilities - everything was perfect. And Gretchen is a perfect host: generous, responsive and kind. We'll sure be back.

Wonderful place

We spent a week at Villa Poggio Verde. Two families with six kids in total. The place is more than fantastic! We loved to spend time in the garden and the different terraces. The view is fantastic and the pool is simply perfect for both swimming and playing. Gretchen made us feel at home from the beginning, she has thought of everything when equipping this house. We played badminton, ping pong, fussball and even freespee competitions in the pool. Even when relaxing, there is a cinema in one of the big living rooms. We loved, that the place is right in the heart of the backcountry of lake como. Lecco, como and even Monza are wonderful to visit. We spent a lot of time riding race bicycles around the lake. And can really recommend the hills close to Bellagio. And the cycling museum on top of the Ghisallo hill. We will definitely come back!!

Amazing Italian Villa!

Highly recommend staying at this villa! The property and house exceeded all of my expectations (which are high) and Gretchen was beyond helpful with reservations at local restaurants (all of which were amazing), private chefs and car service. The grounds of the property are beautiful (even better than the pictures show), the house is historical but also with updated amenities and the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen were all excellent. I would come back to stay again and plan to next year with my family. Highly, highly recommended!

About the host

Hosted by Gretchen Romig Crosti

Host profile image
I grew up in Kansas and met Luigi when the bank I worked for transferred me to Milan. The home has been in Luigi's family for generations. We used it a lot when our children were young but now that they are living abroad we are pleased that others might share and enjoy this beautiful place.
I love to cook and both Luigi and I enjoy sharing meals with friends, so when we decided to refurbish the kitchen, we joined 3 smaller spaces into one large gourmet kitchen and informal dining space, with plenty of space for sous-chefs and conversation groups, and all the utensils needed to facilitate a great meal.
Over the years the house has been used for innumerable family gatherings, musical evenings, holiday parties, charity tea parties and family weddings. We love having the opportunity to share the beauty of Poggio Verde with our three children, all of our extended families and with friends.

Why they chose this property

With a deed dated November 1897, our great uncle Carlo Bondonio became the owner of Poggio Verde 'Green Hill', an 8-hectare property consisting of a farmhouse, a house with a barn, and a country house. The date of construction of the country house is uncertain but parts of the old farmhouse likely date from the 1500s.
Photos from the early 1900s show that Poggio Verde was similar to its current appearance, but surrounded by oak forests and with a few cultivated fields.
At the beginning of 1900, uncle Carlo built two farmsteads for dairy cows and pigs. Milk and butter were produced under the Bondonio brand as well as silk cocoons and wine.
Uncle Carlo also installed two cannons. They fired when there was risk of hail and neighboring counties replied with the sound of bells. Any narrow escape was celebrated with copious libations.
When uncle Carlo died in 1936 his daughter Fanny inherited Poggio Verde. She used to spend summers here where her husband, Gabriele Santini, director of the Opera of Rome, prepared his concerts playing the 1905 Schiedmeier piano still in our living room. Many artists visited Poggio Verde, including Arturo Toscanini.
But with the outbreak of the war, Fanny took the decision to sell. Poggio Verde was then purchased in 1941 by her cousin and our grandfather Luigi, who had spent wonderful periods of his childhood in Poggio Verde.
When the World War II bombing began, the family moved to Poggio Verde. Here domestic life was quiet; farmers cultivated the land, kept cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, silkworms and made wine in the Tinera.
With the end of the war began the great transformation of Poggio Verde. A garden, a stone porch and an Italian garden were built. In the porch, grandfather Luigi, a passionate Latin scholar, had two stone plaques placed with quotes from Horace’s Satires. Like Horace, grandfather Luigi saw in Poggio Verde the fulfillment of his dreams and the hope of a peaceful old age among his affectionate family, friends and books.

What makes this property unique

Less than an hour from Milan yet immersed on a quiet green hill, this 18th c. villa gives visitors the pleasure of enjoying all the riches of the northern Italian countryside and cuisine, including a Michelin starred restaurant and several micro farm producers in the neighbourhood, with a kitchen that just invites experimentation and a stunning outdoor dining space, while at the same time giving easy access to the myriad of cultural riches of Milan and the cities of Bergamo, Lecco and Como, just to name a few. Biking along the Adda river in a charming state park is just 30 minutes away, the same distance as one of Italy's top golf courses where the Italian Open was held in 2015. Mountain climbers need drive only 40 minutes to reach the Italian Alps, and a luxury Spa treatment is merely 10 minutes away. Monza's royal treasure, including the iron crown with which Napoleone famously crowned himself, is right in our neighbourhood. And of course, you can simply stay home and enjoy our lovely park, challenge fellow travellers to croquet or badminton or enjoy a book in the cozy Roccolo surrounded by trees. Indoors there is an excellent grand piano that was played by Toscanini, a Bose large-screen home cinema and several quiet spots to take a book. The house features air conditioning, internet throughout and an elevator.
