About this property

Inkwell Suite at Spofford Lodge

This historical building was originally built and operated as a school in the early 1900's. The Freemasons took ownership of it in the 60's and in late 2022, we purchased it to give it a new lease on life.
Lovingly restored from the ground up, we have taken what we believe are the original school rooms on the second floor and transformed them into 3 luxury studios, catering to guests that want to enjoy where they rest and sleep as much as they are enjoying exploring the mid-coast of Maine.
The freestanding bathtub, a state of the art coffee machine and high quality bed linens and seasonal comforters make this studio a perfect place to unwind after a day hiking in Acadia National Park and to plan your next adventure. Bucksport itself is a sleepy town with unparalleled views of Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox. The waterfront is just one block away. Walk the delightful harbor walk with a coffee from the quaint bookshop, or grab a treat at the great local ice-cream parlor.

Superb

I loved this place! The owners were also very attentive and helpful and available. The bed was super comfortable and the coffee maker was pretty epic. Also, the bathroom was very nice as well. I left something in the room and they were very easy to work with in getting it mailed back to me.

Best Place!

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. My favorite part was the coffee maker, no the bed, no the coffee. Just kidding. Everything was beautiful and clean. The host was helpful and so nice when I left my kindle there, she is sending it back to me.

Artistically Renovated Historic School

It was such a pleasure to stay here. Our room was so comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed the soaking tub! The town is walkable and there is lots to do in surrounding areas. Would definitely stay here again and maybe try another room as they are all different!

Best anniversary getaway

We absolutely loved our stay and already want to block out dates to come back. We only stayed for one night but immediately wished we could stay longer after we saw how beautiful and comfortable our room was. The hosts thought of so many little details that made our stay feel extra special. We now want the same coffee machine and have the blueprint for our dream bathroom 😆 100/10 stay.

The Inkwell Suite was an amazing little getaway for my husband and I! We both enjoyed the freestanding tub and the skylight was an amazing relaxing place. The suite was clean and beautiful! Lisa was very responsive to any questions/needs we had during our stay. Would definitely recommend it to friends/family who are heading to Maine!

Down East day trip locale perfected! Bring your whole family and rent all three suites. The hosts have accomplished absolute magic in their herculean efforts to make this building a draw for the town. They succeeded wildly, with only a few new-lodging quirks to work out. The design is just enough, with subtle details somehow receding into the character of the moment rather than feeling obvious and cliché. We have been waiting for years to see what might be accomplished here, with not high hopes. We jumped to stay here for eclipse weekend and couldn't have been happier. Stay here if you want authenticity and history with your amenities. You get heated bathroom floors, real espresso, a sturdy foam bed, and a hot simple rain shower with hand unit too. The hosts are available but not in your face, and as communicative as you need them to be. Unless you're someone who despises old buildings with a few creaks, you'll likely love staying in any one of the three suites, each with such different character. The Tesla destination charger worked well after I figured out that I needed to just plug it in and enter the last four digits of the serial number on the side of the unit to get it going. You don't need a Tesla adapter for J-1772; it's built in. I would stay here for the reliable charging alone. All the other details make it one of the most enjoyable short-term rental places that I have ever stayed in, even after traversing the U.S. and Canada in an electric vehicle last fall.

My husband Alex and I are originally from the UK and moved to Maine 8 years ago after travelling the globe in an old campervan. Since moving to Maine, we have renovated several properties and this building was our latest endeavor.
We have a somewhat unique style for Maine and wanted to bring clean, modern contemporary design to sit alongside the original features of this impressive property to create a relaxing, comfortable environment for those visiting the area. We wanted to offer some of the home comforts we have grown accustomed to, like excellent coffee, decent wine glasses and a luxurious bath tub to our guests, and we hope that the thoughtful design and care that we have taken in providing this will offer you one of your most memorable stays during your time in Mid-Coast Maine.

Why they chose this property

Bucksport, Maine is a very peaceful town right on the Penobscot river. Our property is one block away from the waterfront with its walkway, perfect for ambling along and enjoying unparalleled views of The Penosbcot Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox.
Lobster boat tours can take you out on the water, you can stand in line for the local famous ice cream take out window, grab a glass of wine in a secret little courtyard bar, buy coffee and books at the local bookstore or take in a movie, all just steps away from the property.

Bucksport is also an incredible central location for exploring Mid-coast Maine with Belfast, Bangor and Ellsworth all around 25 minutes drive, and with Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park just 35 minutes away. An easy commute to a bustling area with respite at the end of your day of exploring the rugged coast and picture perfect towns.

With ample parking and EV chargers available we hope that you will choose our property as one of the stops on your Maine adventure.
