About this property

The Carriage House - A Cozy Beach Cottage With Spectacular Ocean Views

If you are looking for a relaxing and memorable vacation away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life; a vacation where you can reconnect with family or friends, or enjoy peaceful solitude, then you will find no better vacation spot than the cozy Carriage House, set across the lawn from the soft white sand of secluded Sandy River Beach; where the forest meets the sea, and nature abounds. You will enjoy magnificent ocean views and comfy accommodations. Our woodland, marsh, and beach offer discovery of a variety wildlife, including the occasional moose, deer, eagle, harbor seal or porpoise. Stroll the ½ mile sandy beach collecting sea glass and other treasures washed in by the gentling rolling waves. Explore tide-pools, the rockweed covered granite ledges, and the streams of our salt water estuary, to discover a variety of tidal treasures. At low tide, hike across the sand bar to explore a nearby island. Or just relax on the beach, watching the lobster boats travel the bay hauling their daily catch, and the sailboats off in the distance. You can experience breathtaking sunrises, the spectacular glow of the moon as it rises over the ocean, and wonderfully starry, starry nights. Be lulled to sleep by the rolling ocean waves and evergreens blowing with the night time breeze.

The cozy Carriage House with an extremely efficient open floor plan, and well equipped kitchen, feels much larger than its actual size The oven and stove are electric and the kitchen window offers a view of our woodland and estuary. The dining table sits in front of a bay window with a view of the ocean and tree covered islands. The inviting sitting area has a propane stove, small library, satellite TV, and DVD and CD players. The cottage has two cozy bedrooms each with double beds, and a full bath. The larger bedroom also has a double hide-a-bed. The front deck offers an additional relaxing or entertaining area, and an ocean view.

The Carriage House is part of a family owned complex that includes another rental cottage, and in addition to the private white sand beach also includes a 10 acre salt water marsh, a boat ramp and anchorage (26' boat maximum), all available for your use.

Beautiful U.S. gem

Kathy and Bob could not have been kinder or more generous. The cottage was immaculate and included every convenience we needed without being cluttered. Our family of 4 had a magical stay, enjoying the beauty of Maine without the crowds. We can't wait to return.

perfect week

I was looking for ocean out the door and cozy cabin to spend a week with my mom and husband. This fit the bill perfectly. It was a fabulous weather week, and we spend at least 75 percent of our time on the beach in our little cabana. The cabin was just right for us, and we didn't need to go anywhere, just be there. Thank you for fulfilling a dream of mine.

Home away from Home! RELAXATION!

Upon our arrival, we were greeted and made to feel like one of the family and we did ! The cottage has everything you need to have an enjoyable vacation. The kitchen is fully equipped and even had a lobster pot, which we used a few times. Carriage House is just a short drive to the area Lobster company. Being within steps of the Sandy River Beach was amazing and the view is incredible. We received many great recommendations for local attractions in the area. There are hiking trails on the Great Wass Island that we enjoyed. Our educational tour of the DownEast Institute was amazing and I'm glad we didn't miss it. This is a vacation my family will never forget. Hopefully , we can plan a return trip soon because it was so hard to leave.

Incredibly beautiful spot, lovely cottage with everything we needed

What an absolutely perfect few days we spent at this lovely spot on the Jonesport coast! Kathie and Bob were so wonderful and helpful, and it was nice having them next door for any questions we had about the area or property. They are a sweet couple and went out of their way to make our time enjoyable. Our kids loved riding their bikes on the beach and we all loved looking for sea glass and watching the moon rise over the ocean. The beach is sandy and private, a rarity in Maine. One day we drove to Cutler Coast and hiked out to the cliffs for an amazing view, but the rest of the time we were content to just stay at the cottage and relax. Everything we needed was here. We can't wait to come back and visit again! Thank you, Kathie and Bob!

Cozy cottage

We were greeted upon arrival by the friendly owners , Bob and Kathie. They were very helpful in getting us acquainted with the property and gave us plenty of ideas of things to do throughout the week. John was also a great help and it was a pleasure meeting the family on the property. The cottage is very clean and well cared for. It had everything we needed for the week and was comfortable for my husband, son, and myself. We enjoyed the game and movie options and there were plenty of books for a rainy day. The beach was nice and very quiet. We brought our kayaks and explored the estuary during high tide as well as the bay but had no luck with fishing. The cottage is in a quiet area just outside the fishing town of Jonesport., other area attractions within an hour drive that we enjoyed- quoddy head lighthouse in Lubec, hiking, helens restaurant with THE BEST blueberry pie, Eastport, wild blueberry land, and Maine sea salt company and tour. There are also many scenic drives in the area. We enjoyed our stay at the cottage property and hope to be back again sometime. Thanks so much Bob and Kathie for a pleasant stay!!

Long over due mini vacation

Kathie & Bob were excellent hosts, always checking in to see if we needed anything. The cottage was very clean and welcoming. Bob treated us to a boat ride in the harbor to see the seals. They went above and beyond with special delicious treats! The sandy beach was a dream and fun to explore for rocks, shells and sea glass. We had the most wonderful relaxing time! Sure hope we can plan a trip again next year! Dave & Doris

Amazing week at the Carriage house

Since we got lucky to get the last week of June at the Carriage house, I should probably write a terrible review to grow our odds to rent again this amazing spot... ;) But it just wouldn't be fair for Kathie and Bob who are amazing hosts. I mean, seriously, the spot is gorgeous, the Carriage house is perfect for a family of 4, and the pace of Jonesport truly gets you in full chill-out vacation mode, unlike elsewhere in Maine where people are in such a hurry trying to be on vacation. The beach is beautiful, the mountain biking in Acadia is spectacular, and the seafood is all around and delicious. Thanks Bob and Kathie, we will be back!

What a Wonderful Week!

Kathie and Bob are just the friendliest, kindest and most generous hosts a guest could hope to find. The house is still adorable, as it was the first time we stayed there. This was our second vacation at the Carriage House, and we also stayed at another one of their houses one year. It is AWESOME to be literally steps from the sandy beach. My kids are young teens and they love it, and it is also a great place for little kids, but it is still nice and quiet there. Bob got and made lobsters for us, and invited us to go on a boat ride and to come to a campfire one night. So sweet. This place is a wonderful vacation spot in every way.

A cozy cottage, fabulous location and warm, friendly hosts.

Thank you, Kathie and Bob for your wonderful hospitality. We truly enjoyed meeting you. We were very content and comfortable at the Carriage House. The cottage was very cozy, the beds very comfortable, and in a great location from which to explore the area. The homemade peanut butter ice cream which Bob brought over for us was a delightful treat! It was fabulous location so close to the beach. We enjoyed our evening walks along beautiful Sandy River Beach, watching the tides change and searching for sea glass, until it was too dark to find any more. Watching from the beach out front one night we were treated to the most beautiful full moon rise we had ever seen, huge and orange and reflecting on the calm water, like a huge candle. We were fortunate to have 4 consecutive days of beautiful sunny weather. We kayaked four days in a row, eager to take advantage of the good weather. We enjoyed kayaking in the marsh and around the small island where we watched the bald eagle as he sat quietly posing in the sunight. On other days we kayaked out to Roque Island to the outer cove, and then enjoyed lunch on the small outer beach; and another day on Machias Bay, around the beautiful islands there, riding the swells, and then down to Jasper beach, where we collected some polished stones, feeling like kids. By the time the rain arrived for the last two days, we were so tired it was just as well that we were forced to take the time to get some rest, but it feels like we left so much undone, such as hiking out on Great Wass and other day trips up to Lubec & Eastport. One week was definitely not long enough - I hope we make it back up here!

Beach was great. Kayaked along the coast, saw seals. Kids loved exploring the islands for sea glass and shells. Hosts were more than accommodating. Would recommend and plan on staying again.

Restful, beautiful and welcoming!!!!

My husband and I picked the Carriage House as a place to rest and spend some quality time together. This cozy cottage provided just what we needed. The cottage is comfortable, well stocked, and clean. The owners Kathie and Bob were there when we arrived and immediately made us feel welcome and this continued throughout our stay. The location and camp are amazing BUT Kathie and Bob's kindness made the stay SO enjoyable. They provided information on the area, included my husband in their golf trips and even a boat ride of the harbor. This vacation spot is definitely on out list to do again!!!

Just What was Needed

We got away to the Carriage House to relax and heal - and that is just what we were able to do. The layout of the cottage fit our needs (An 82 year old and a person recovering from knee surgery). Easy access within the cottage which is all on one level. Rustic in design, it was charming and had everything we could desire, from kitchen to bedrooms and a delightful deck to have our morning breakfast at. The real star is being outside. From sitting outside on the deck, or on the beach which was just steps away. Each day we walked the sandy beach and found little treasures. At low tide you can walk out along a sandbar to one of the islands. Lobster and seafood abounds whether you prepare it yourself in the lobster pot or on the charcoal grill - or if you eat out at one of the area eateries. The couch is a bit worn out and as it is the main seat we found it hard (with my knee and my mum's age) to get up from once seated - but we solved that problem by placing the cushions from the couch in one of the bedrooms on top of the ones on the couch in the living room and that worked like a charm. Believe me, that was the only minus and it would not stop me from going back to the peace and relaxation of this delightful getaway. If you enjoy hiking, there are a number of nature trails in the area. We walked the conservation trail on Beal's Island which is just a twenty minute drive away - and we took a one day excursion along the Bold Coast into Lubec and did a hike there as well. Lubec is a one hour drive. If you want to go to Canada, remember your passport!! If you love to kayak this beach gives you great access. My knee kept me from it, but our neighbors in the other cottage brought kayaks, and even went for an overnight camping with their children on an island that they were able to reach leaving from the beach. The owners are very responsive to your needs both before (via email) and during your visit. They live across the street and are very available, friendly people. Thank you for making this time I got to spend with my mum such a great time and the fondest of memories now that we are home.

Tranquil, Peaceful and beauty

This cute little cottage sits in the perfect setting. The cottage itself is so comfy and has so much charm. The cottage is very clean and has everything you need as if you were at home. Their is a washer and dryer located directly next to the cottage under the carport that is very convenient. From the front deck you can look out in the morning while sipping on a cup of coffee and enjoy the beauty of the islands and ocean. After walking, playing and combing the peaceful private beach they have a little foot washing station to wash off all the sand. This is my family's second time visiting the carriage house and it never fails us. This time around we encountered some cooler days but we had already planned on heading inland to bar harbor to bring the kids to the Wild Acadia Fun park and Water slides. That place was perfect for my young kids. They enjoyed hours of fun!!! We then took a drive up the scenic Cadillac Mountain. We enjoyed many meals at Bayview Takeout in Beals and a delicious blueberry pie from blueberry land. We shopped at the local grocery store Manafords for some yummy steaks and picked up some fresh lobsters from Look lobster wharf. The owners are very pleasant to work with when booking this place. While there you are greeted by John who is the most pleasant man we have encountered while on vacation. He looks to make your stay as pleasant has he can. On our first trip he took our family out on a lobster boat and we learned about lobstering. He then took us for a nice boat ride tour of one of the islands and ocean where we saw seals and the beautiful surroundings. I would most definitely recommend this to anyone. Thanks for allowing us to rent this great little cottage. :)

About the host

My brothers and I grew up in New England, visiting our grandparents at their cottage on Sandy River Beach every summer of our childhood, creating wonderful memories of the beach and our grandparents. Even after moving to California, the love of our time spent at the beach with our grandparents drew us back to Sandy River Beach as many summers as possible. As adults, my brothers returned to Jonesport, and they are an integral part of the Jonesport community. I have continued to return to Sandy River Beach each summer, with my California husband, our children, and now our grandchildren in tow. We spent many summer vacations in the Carriage House before purchasing the Sandpiper cottage right next door. In 2008 I inherited the Carriage House, renovated it, and continued renting it as my grandparents, and then my father had done for over 50 years, to wonderful families, many of whom have carried on a family tradition of annually renting our family cottages for multiple generations.

Why they chose this property

The Carriage House is so named because its original structure was built in 1893 to store the carriages for a small victorian beach house that sits slightly to the left in front of it. It is one of a very few rental cottages in Jonesport that sits on a private sand beach; and the only one on property with access to a private estuary and boat launch. The combination of fresh and salt water areas offers our visiting families a fun and unique water play experience. The estuary also offers a wide variety of wild life viewing for our nature admiring quests.

What makes this property unique

The Carriage House is small, but all who stay here remark how cozy, comfortable and spacious it is for its size. My brothersand I live on the adjacent properties to the Carriage House to offer onsite management and plenty of local information. My nephew who is a lobster fisherman will deliver the 'lobsters to order' to your door!!! We rent the Sandpiper cottage as well, which is also listed on Homeaway, Families sometimes rent both cottages for family reunions or for vacations with friends.
