About this property
Feirin De--a Magnificent Old Home on Lake Michigan
Magnificent old family home, with a second smaller home attached in a four acre compound we call Feirin De which is Gaelic for “God’s Gift”. The homes are located on a partly secluded bluff overlooking Lake Michigan with views of spectacular sunsets and white caps on windy days. The main home has an expansive deck perfect for watching the children and grandchildren (and parents and grandparents) in the 20x40 pool a few steps below that is completely fenced in for safety. The main home has five bedrooms, three full and two half baths, and sleeps 12 comfortably. The little or “Granny” house has one bedroom with a queen sized bed, two full baths, a sleeping porch with five twin beds and a downstairs bedroom that also has a queen bed. There is also a small kitchen and an extra dishwasher. In the main home there is a large living room with a fireplace and dining room that can seat 20. The main home has two screened in porches, one small one off the kitchen and a large one off the living room and deck which, incidentally has a large table and a pergola at one end for delightful meals in the sun or late afternoon shade. Both homes have washers and dryers and there is an outdoor shower to clean up after an afternoon at the beach. The beach is located 1.5 miles to the north. There is no beach below the bluff at Feirin De but we have a fire pit setup on the bluff for evening s'mores and to watch the sunsets. This is an idyllic place for an extended family or two small ones to have a peaceful and relaxing vacation.

This was the 2nd time we've stayed at Feirin De & we were even more delighted with the property then we were the 1st time we stayed 2 years ago. Updates to the 2nd house were a more than pleasant surprise & allowed our group of 19 to spread out. The pool was used daily & we watched sunsets from the bluff every night. We can't wait to come back. The only thing we would add would be a clothesline for our wet suits & towels instead of hanging them over the fence around the pool. Added bonus, there were 3 mornings when deer were in the yard.
This is our fourth year to stay in this house. We love the location, the pool, and, of course, our view of Lake Michigan. The house itself is roomy and comfortable. The Granny House is a "bonus" for our large family. Feirin de is a special place and we look forward to spending a week next year in this very "Irish" home!
The location is beautiful. Love the old historical home.
But there was some major problems with the heat. Apparently it may have not been checked for the upcoming winter. The temperature dropped rapidly on Friday night and so unfortunately my family wit small babies had no HEAT. The maintenance man did come out Saturday and said someone hopefully would come and check but being a weekend,. It didn't happen. The fireplace was fine for the daytime heat, but with 6 small children in the house,. It was cold overnight
There is also some issue with the upstairs shower as well. And the kitchen faucet has some problems.
I truly did love the whole time that we were able to share together and the grandkids made many memories
Our multi-generational family stayed at this excellent property and never wanted for a thing. Although it was too cold to swim in the lake, the pool was wonderful. We enjoyed every sunset, roasting marshmallows over the campfire. It was hard to leave but we hope to be back. Thanks so much.

A vintage getaway.
This home was definitely a vintage getaway, so if your looking for a fancy, modern place then it's not for you. It has plenty of room for a large family, and ample space for sleeping. We had to have a few things repaired while there, and the caretaker was very helpful. The pool was a nice addition, and the home was close to town, and to the beaches.

Beautiful location, and a big enough house for the whole family. The kitchen was very well stocked with all that you would need to cook a big family meal. The homeowner was responsive to all of my questions before our trip, much appreciated! We enjoyed our stay
This is a perfect spot for a family vacation!
It was very clean and the pool is perfect!
The mosquitoes were just terrible so had to use spray to go outside.
This property was perfect for our entire family of 15! From 5 years old to 88; we all were comfortable and had plenty of room. Baseball and baggos on the lawn; swimming; eating meals all together; and watching beautiful sunsets. We couldn’t have asked for a better vacation! Our host Kathy was extremely responsive to us as well as the maintenance man John Ball. Thank you for a 2nd year of great memories at Fieren De!
We were extremely happy staying in this very "Irish" home for one week. Everything was in the kitchen anyone would need. The pool was wonderful, and the close view of Lake Michigan was magnificent. Yard and flowers were beautiful, and we saw many black squirrels, rabbits, and deer almost out our front door. We definitely hope to return next year!
We had a glorious time this summer enjoying sunsets on the deck, swimming in the pool, cooking for family, and going into town. Would do it again in a heartbeat!
Feirin De was a wonderful property that provided our large family a very comfortable vacation. The view, the accommodations, and the pool made our stay wonderful! We were all able to sit down and eat a meal together and visit comfortably out on their spacious deck. My 9 year old grandson put it perfectly, "Grandma, I bet the people that live here feel grateful every day whenever they come here! I could live here forever!" We had 9 adults and 7 children ranging from 4 yrs old through 88 and every one of us felt the name of the property was SO appropriate! "God's Gift" it truly was.
This property on the shoreline bluff overlooking the lake gave great sunsets around the firepit. The house was roomy and the set up workable for our wide ranges of ages, as we were joined by our children and 7 grandchildren ( age range from 14 yrs to 3 months). A few days the outside temps were unusually warm which made the non- AC living space and bedrooms very uncomfortable. The pool and yard were great; quite neighborhood close to South Haven beach and downtown! We really appreciated the support of the owners to allow us to get this July 4th week at the last minute, the property was clean and ready for us; the Maintenance guy (very friendly) came by 3 times during the week to check the pool and keep us in wood for the firepit. We will continue to check availability to try to rent this property again. Even with the "no AC in Living space and some bedrooms" - we loved our stay and time there.
Very beautiful for our wedding it couldn’t of been any better very friendly neighbors recommended

Rustic cottage stay
The property is very dated and quite quaint. The cleaning service could have made sure the lamps had light bulbs in them. We did not bring them with us. The kids toys/games/puzzles were a mess. There weren’t enough pieces to play games or put puzzles together. Believe previous renters or cleaning lady just threw them into whatever space was empty to get them off the floor. There was no cable in the granny house nor was the WiFi strong enough to be able to use for iPads and computers. The 2 tv’s in the main house had very limited Comcast channels. The granny house no tv at all. The fireplace in the granny house would not turn off at the switchThe main house had an infestation of ants. We did find ant traps which we put out. Mostly were in the kitchen area. None of the 8 doors in the main house locked. Made us feel insecure for a couple of days. The granny house did not lock either. The pool the first day registered 80 degrees but subsequent days was 70 degrees. Could not find where we could set the heater higher. Could have been on a timer? The stairs into the pool shallow end is starting to pull away from the wall of the pool. With 4 grandchildren under the age of 8 it appeared to be a safety issue. All 4 grandchildren got a rash from the noodles provided for the pool. Suggest they be replaced. The pool was salt water and not fresh chlorine water. This was not disclosed in the Vrbo writeup nor the fact that it had no air conditioning on the main floor of the main house. Vrbo should make sure what is published is what you get for amenities not just generalizations.
Also take your own towels and toilet paper. They are not provided. Because our family is quite resourceful, we were able to salvage our stay and still have a good time enjoying each other. Believe the owners need to check on their cleaning service and repairman to make sure they are providing the services they say the have provided and the owners have paid for.
This home could be a wonderful stay if it had a little more tender care and upkeep. The location is great and the views of Lake Michigan were spectacular.

A great low-key group gathering
Our multi-family group enjoyed our stay there. We were there for 3 days and put each family unit into each bedroom, one family into the granny house. The pictures don't show it, but basically the granny house and main house are separated from each other by a garage and walkway, so not too far apart (but not close enough for all baby monitors - we tried!). There was a child booster seat and a pack n play in an upstairs closet, which turned out to be very helpful for babies! :) The overall property was clean but a little old - kind of like going to grandma's cottage. So not the most updated or new, but definitely great (except the kitchen was updated and beautiful, like the owners say).
Our group went into town once and to North Beach, which was FABULOUS for kids (playground, swings, very clean sand, lots of open space to run around -- but also pay $10 to park). We liked the fire pit out at the end of the property near the bluff, and the small play set was suitable for our little kids (some old swings and an old wood climbing structure, plus a small wooden bunk house that they liked playing in, too). The yard needed to be mowed, and the outside wasn't very well kept up, but the owners communicated that they were going to get to that for later this summer, so I hope they stuck to that for other guests who stay there!

Great place for a large group
Everything was beautiful and clean. We were expecting the pool to be ready for our visit which was unfortunate as we had picked the location for it but apparently there had been a delay in replacing the lining. Regardless, we still had a great stay!

Charming Cottage that needs a LOT of work
First let me say that the owners were just delightful. Wonderful people! I rated this property 2 stars because of the pool - which was in fairly decent shape - brought the number of stars up from 1 (I'm told the pool is being redone this fall). Unfortunately, this rustic cottage appears to be a bit neglected. I don't think the cleaning crew is doing their job - many cobwebs and spiders all over the house inside. Had to spend a bit of time cleaning when we arrived. Bushes outside are overgrown. One of the porches was unusable and in need of repair. That said, if this cottage got a lot of TLC and some really deep cleaning , it could be a good rental in the future for some renters who are truly looking for a rustic experience with beautiful sunsets on Lake Michigan.

Great Location, Good for Family Reunion, Easy to Love
Situated on a bluff in South Haven, Michigan, this property affords a spectacular view of Lake Michigan with a nightly show of sunsets. While very close to downtown and grocery stores and restaurants, it is out of the way and generally very quiet (except for lawn-mowing day). This is a large lot with flat areas where lawn games like corn hole, croquet, or bocce ball work; and the younger kids can play Hide 'n Seek. Since we were on the "early" side for usual Michigan weather, we were happy for the well-maintained, heated pool. As it happened, the week was warm as were the beaches. Nearby there was charter fishing, kayaking, biking, surf -board rentals and, for golfers, golf. There are plenty of beds --enough for 19--but most rooms require sharing. The bathrooms served 16 of us well. We enjoyed the multiple tables for sharing meals or games; the CD collection and the good speakers; and the large TV which was equipped with a DVD player. There is a throw-back Video rental place in town. The kitchen is superbly supplied, We brought along some things, but found out we could have relied completely on what was there. The owners are easy to work with and very accommodating. There is a house phone currently available to use for making calls anywhere in the U.S. Cell coverage can be a bit spotty. There are many books, games, puzzles, and even craft supplies. Being the senior members of our group, we stayed in the newer Granny House which also had its own kitchen. There is a freezer in the garage too.
We loved the "homey" atmosphere---not all glass and granite and white carpets like some rentals flaunt. This was a place to relax, read, cook, gather. In short: be on vacation!

Over 15 Years at Feirin De
We started our yearly visit to Feirin De the first year it was available. The owners are the BEST! Our family has grown with the addition of 10 grand children during this time, spread out from Minneapolis to Ann Arbor to St. Louis. During our week a Feirin De, the kids concentrate on playing together and otherwise realize the pleasures of being cousins in an extended family. Their relationships could not have grown as close without the perfect accommodations and location this facility has to offer. Our traditions include swimming every day, at least two meals together with the combined use of the dining room and the deck, and congregating every evening for the sunset, which has to be experienced to be appreciated. (Smores have been known to be enjoyed by well behaved children). The facility is just perfect for our family uses.
There are well planned modifications almost every year and our large group has made full use of every one. Great fun!
South Haven, the State Parks and the blue berry farms are bonus attractions. We have expanded the size of the family visit to include other nieces and nephews. When we started to overflow, the nearby Motel was extremely convenient.
The comments by others better describe the physical attractions of these houses, but we have learned to think of it as the center of our family since it is the only time we have to get together simply to enjoy one another. It gives every opportunity to do so. A beautiful, warm property. I believe you'll love it as much as we do.

If you like that kind of thing...
My family drives 18 hours from Colorado once a year to be able to spend a week at this magnificent old home. It's THAT worth it! If you like waking up to the smell of coffee and the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen every morning, this place is for you. If you like cool breezes blowing gently while you relax on the porch, deep into a juicy book, this place is for you. If you like sitting pool side with a cold beverage while watching the kids play in the water (or taking a refreshing dip yourself!), this place is for you. If you like delicious meals shared among family and friends, all seated at the same big table, this place is for you. If you love sitting on the bluff, high above the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan, watching the sunset and reflecting on what a good life it is, THEN THIS PLACE IS FOR YOU!

About the host
Hosted by Kathy Hagen
I am Kathy Hagen and this is my father, John Slevin. Together, with our spouses we own Feirin De. We both grew up in Peoria, Illinois and in fact my parents still live in the house I grew up in. My husband and I have live in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Why they chose this property
Our family has been vacationing in Western Michigan for as long as I can remember and, until 1997, had always rented a home. With my parents, 7 siblings, spouses, children and now grandchildren it was becoming more difficult to find a place for us. Then my parents came across this place. My husband and I decided to go in with my parents to purchase this large, lovely and inviting home with marvelous views of Lake Michigan, a built in 20x40 swimming pool and acres of ground to boot. We felt this was a gift from God and because of out Irish heritage we named it "Feirin De" which is Gaelic for "Gift of God".
What makes this property unique
Spectacular sunsets, cool breezes off the lake in summer, flowering trees and bushes in the spring, magnificent colors in the fall, gracious meals for 20 in our large dinning room and, most of all, the peace and tranquility that fills the place.
