York is a popular beach community with history, charm and accessibility. First settled in 1624 and the first incorporated city in America, the area offers a myriad of fun things to do including relaxing on the beach, fishing, sightseeing and shopping. It is home to the John Hancock Wharf and Mark Twain's summer home and is an area which still has architectural examples from the gilded age, particularly the shingle style.

There is plenty to do including fishing, kayaking, boating, biking, golfing, & dining in York and the surrounding communities of Kittery, Cape Neddick, Ogunquit or Portsmouth, NH. The area is known for summer theater, concerts, and the many activities in York Beach including 10 pin bowling, miniature golf, and saltwater taffy and fresh made ice cream. There are local forts, lighthouses and historic homes. Rain or shine, there is an endless array of things to do.

NEW IN 2024: The house is now set up with a downstairs bedroom with ensuite full bathroom and 4 additional bedrooms upstairs.

Lovely York Home

My group of 8 ladies and I chose this home because of location and the number of beds/ bathrooms. We loved our stay at this lovely homey comfortable home- fully equipped kitchen open to the large dining table - plenty of room for our large group. Bedrooms and bathrooms were well appointed and comfy. Living room also accommodate our large group easily. Favorite area was sitting out in the lovely porch in the afternoon relaxing and enjoying with beautiful fall weather. Any questions/ concerns were immediately responded to by the owner. Would definitely recommend this listing.

Lovely home by the water

Each of our 5 family members had our own room in this updated New England style house. The kitchen had everything we needed (& more), there were little extras like sketch pads & board games available. A bridge over York river with beautiful sunsets & nature views is a 2 minute walk. Only the hidden limitation of arriving to unmade beds detracted; however, our host Maurice took care of this at my request only 24h before our arrival. Wow! & THANKS!

Family gathering

We had an awesome stay in York! The owner was very accommodating with a last minute request, which was greatly appreciated. My kids loved the layout and extra room that we didn't have last year (different location and house). Two had to work while we were there and were able to find a quiet space in the house. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, and then some. Plenty of extra blankets, pillows, and fans were a plus as well! The walk to the bagel shop became a morning trip for some and walks to the beach and/or the wiggly bridge was part of most days. We loved the place so much, we have already reserved it for next year as it was in a perfect location for us to attend the New England Parkinson's bike ride. The kids all want to do a bit more in York next year as well!

Great Place to Stay in Scenic York Village

Great location and great property. Rooms clean, all amenities as described. Loved the quiet street and scenic trail nearby to the Wiggly Bridge Reserve and Fisherman's Walk. Ice cream and bagel shop also just a short walk away! Short drive to beaches made it convenient for all activities during the week.

Thanksgiving family gathering

We rented this house so that my 4 daugthers, 2 son in laws, and grandson could all stay together with us for Thanksgiving week. The house was perfect for the occasion and it is in a great location. It is easy to get to the grocery store, bagel shop, restaurants etc. and I especially loved how close it was to York Harbor and Fishermans Walk and Cliff Walk. Maurice was super responsive and helpful during the planning stages and while we were there as well.

Perfect For Our Weekend Getaway

What a beautiful home in a perfect location. This house was more than met all our wants and needs...clean, spacious and homey. During the day we (5 sisters) shopped, walked to Wiggly Bridge, hiked the cliffs, walked the beaches and even caught a musical at Ogunquit Playhouse. In the evenings, we cooked, played games and just enjoyed relaxing in this quaint neighborhood. This house and its location has something for everyone.

Perfect Wedding Weekend

When I searched for a place to stay for a family wedding in South Berwick, I could not have found a more perfect house. It checked all of the boxes: impeccably clean, roomy, fully stocked kitchen, beautiful bathrooms, comfortable beds with crisp sheets and plenty of towels and a lovely enclosed porch, among other amenities. It had everything we needed and more. The day of our arrival, a severe storm rolled through York, causing power outages to many in the area, including our rental. Our host, Maurice, contacted me immediately to let me know that the power crews were working to restore power. It was still out when we arrived, so we headed to town to the Fat Tomato for takeout(delicious!). We dined in the dark on the front porch during which time the power was finally restored with Maurice keeping me updated. What a pleasure it was to have Maurice for our host, so accommodating and extremely quick to return all of my texts. Dinner at the Sundrop the next night was a pleasant surprise with a 3 piece band, the owner waiting on us while his wife was our chef; a unique menu with locally sourced foods that was absolutely delicious and very memorable! If we were ever to return to the area, I wouldn't hesitate to re-book with Maurice, a great host, a great house and convenient to everything! Thank you, Maurice!

Blissful Days

Our two weeks at this property were truly blissful. With Wiggly Bridge and Fisherman’s Walk just short walks away, we were surrounded by gorgeous views of the harbor and tidal river. The beautiful nearby beach is also walkable, but the 2-minute drive is more practical with beach gear. The house itself was very accommodating, clean and neat and well stocked for cooking/dining in. Beds were comfortable and towels were abundant. The backyard was perfect for wiffle ball games with our little guests! The house is ideal for families, offering easy access to York and surroundings and comfortable surroundings for relaxing at home. Maurice, the owner, is accessible and personable and responds quickly and efficiently to requests and questions. This house was a great find and has provided us with many wonderful memories!

Host profile image
I'm originally from the Chicago suburbs and growing up spent my summers in York Harbor. Some of my fondest memories as an adult was watching my own children (now adults) play in the same beach and climb the rocks as I did as a kid. I've owned the house since 1992 and my family's ties to York Harbor date back to the 1940s. I still live in the central US but have family in York and get out to Maine several times a year.

What makes this property unique

This house began as a one room cottage that is now the living room, which was moved to the property in the mid-1800s by the McKenna family and was added onto several time between then and the mid-1920s. The clapboard under the stairs is from the original exterior of that cottage. We completed a renovation of the entire house in 2018 in which every room was stripped to the framing and rebuilt, new central heating & air conditioning was installed and the kitchen, dining and laundry areas were redesigned - we hope you enjoy it.
