About this property

Very Private Beachfront Home on Point - Bernard

Rock Holme - This is a private oceanfront house set on a point at the tip of the town of Bernard with views of Bass Harbor and outer islands. It has a large painted deck with chaise chairs, anti-gravity chairs, dining furniture, and large gas barbecue grill. The private beach is accessible from the front yard and through a short woods path over a quaint bridge and short walk trough our woods path. The beach through the woods has large stones to sunbath on, and picnic on and there is an island that appears on our beach at low tide. It's a great place to explore and for evening cocktails as the sun sets. There is some beach sand that occurs on our beach at low tide and a nice soft public sand beach to the right of the property around the corner at low tide within walking distance. The ocean sand area is fun to explore to find hermit crabs. Our front beach is ideal to launch kayaks and to beach comb.

The house has three bedrooms. The front master bedroom with queen bed overlooks the water. The color theme is a turquoise/ sea green for curtains and bedding. Pictures feature flowers, coastal art, and Asian art. The ocean view is perfect from the bed. The other queen bedroom overlooks the yard with a side window facing the water. If you leave that window open at night you will hear the ocean which is very soothing. The color theme in this room is blue and it has Asian art. There is a smaller bedroom with a twin bed in between perfect for a young child or adult. (Sorry, no children below age 5 considered - refer to rules and policies). The theme is white with blue accents. The bathroom upstairs is split into two, the inner bathroom with shower, toilet and sink, the outer with sink, mirror, and linen/ medicine cabinets. The front room downstairs overlooking the water has dining area/ combination living room, with the deck accessible from sliding glass door on front and door on side. The couches are oversized, comfortable for relaxing, cocktails, reading, and socializing. Rocking chairs can be moved around to view the water or join in the fun in the living room.

There is a family room in the back where the first door enters the house with spectrum cable, large Smart TV, wireless internet, and Netflix. This room has closing doors off the kitchen and living room. It seats 4 comfortably on the couch and armchair. You can bring one of the rustic rocking chairs or hassock in for extra seating if needed. The house has older antique wooden furniture with charm, mixed with some modern pieces, and beautiful seascape and Asian artwork and decorative features throughout (antiques/ stained glass, carved birds and other art). In the closet in the family room, you can find cushions for the porch dining set, pillows for couch, a spare kitchen grill, and spare placemats. There is a small bathroom next to the family room for easy access when entering or leaving the house. The pictures do not fully display the beauty and details of our house, grounds or beach. Don’t worry you will be pleasantly surprised!

The kitchen is fully stocked with cook pots, cast iron pans, aluminum pans, Silverstone pans, lobster pot, stew pot, 4 slice toaster, wall oven, slow cooking plug in pots, microwave, blender, coffee maker, coffee grinder, waffle maker, lobster cutlery, and serving dishes, mugs, wine glasses, beer mugs, wooden spoons, pitcher, utensils, lettuce cleaner, cutting boards, knives, etc. In the cabinet over the new propane 5 burner stove, there are spices, cooking oils /sprays, cordial glasses and champagne glasses. The brand-new propane stove has five electric start burners and cooks very efficiently. In the kitchen closet you will find assorted items such as baskets, cutting boards, baggies, paper plates, spare paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap and barbeque utensils. There are all the accessories if you decide to have takeout lobsters from Thurston’s lobster pound down the street, including plates, bibs, and butter warmers, and lobster utensils.

The living room has comfortable furniture for relaxing, socializing, cocktails, reading and games. In the bottom of the desk are a variety of games and cards for leisure activities. The shelves in the living room have interesting art books, books of local interest and guides/ maps for hiking that you may borrow. There are a multitude of cookbooks particularly focusing on seafood and healthy cooking to help you get creative in the kitchen or as you are cooking on the grill. Hopefully this house will have all that you need to access to truly have a wonderful vacation while you stay here and you will want to return year after year in the summer or early fall to relax and create more seashore Down East Maine memories with your family!

We have received many compliments on the charm of this house, with many returning guests yearly. We are constantly making upgrades to the interior, exterior, and to its furnishings. This year was no exception!

We have a wonderful restaurant /bar at end of street, Thurston's which is known for its steamed lobster, giant and smaller lobster roll, crab roll, fish chowder and lobster stew, clams, mussels and many other delicious appetizer foods! It has a quaint full-service bar with local Atlantic brews on tap with beautiful artistic interior! It is a very comfortable bar/ restaurant that we frequent on every trip here to mix with locals and visitors!

Love Bernard!

View is amazing. Beds are comfortable. Kitchen is very cluttered but has everything and much more than needed. House a bit dark for our tastes… very 1940-50 Maine cabin style

A Beautiful Stay in Bernard, Maine

My family and I have vacationed in Maine for over 20 years. This is the first time we rented a house and we are so glad we did! This house was spacious and welcoming. It was decorated beautifully and felt very homey. The deck on the back was large and accommodating: perfect for enjoying your morning coffee! Another bonus was the house's location. We were within walking distance from Thurston's Lobster Pound, our favorite restaurant in Acadia! We had a wonderful stay here and the owner could not have been more friendly or responsive. We hope to be able to return someday in the near future.

Great location, very comfortable

Amazing location directly on the ocean with miles of shoreline to explore. Very well equipped kitchen and comfortable furnishings. The owner was most responsive. Walking distance from Thurston’s with the best lobster roll on the island.

Beautiful, cozy, and secluded

We loved this property. Tucked away on the quiet side of the island, but can still walk to get lobster. The private rocky beach was perfect.

Nice setting and house, quiet, close enough to everything

Nice 3BR - a bit rustic but fitting for the area. Great front porch. Maine the way it should be. Property is right on ocean and very close to a great lobster restaurant. Good internet, nice owner, fair cell service.

Wonderful stay!

My family of four loved our stay in this home! Very clean, comfortable and location on the water can’t be beat. Easy drive to Acadia, and we also enjoyed hiking trails on the quiet side of MDI. Having Thurston’s Lobster Pound in walking distance was the icing on the cake.

Peaceful oceanfront stay on the quiet side of MDI

This is a beautiful oceanfront property and well cared for home that was perfect for my family of four, including my two boys (ages 8 and 6) who were in heaven exploring "their own" rocky beach and tidepooling every day. The home is surrounded by trees and is in such a peaceful, quiet area that gave us deer spotting every day! The nearby town of Southwest Harbor has some very nice restaurants - though limited options, the town was far more relaxing and less touristy than Bar Harbor. And having a home base allowed for cooking after those busy days when the kids needed to just chill out...and we could still enjoy oceanfront dining with the house grill and firepit after the kids went to bed. Our host was very helpful with information on the home and area in advance. It is about a 30 minute drive to the main Acadia park entrance, but there are plenty of great hikes/park areas to explore on this side of the island (with less crowds!!) and the drives were picturesque. We loved our stay, and think your family will too! PS - traffic and parking struggles in Acadia are for real in Aug. Get up and at 'em if you want a spot in the key parking lots.

Fantastic, peaceful spot.

We loved our stay at Rock Holme. The VRBO description was very accurate, the place was very clean, fully functional, with typical New England quaintness and practicality. We enjoy cooking and the kitchen, grill and patio all performed admirably. Access to a private beach is extremely difficult to find in this price range and we were blown away by the scenery, sunsets and ability to unwind from reality. Communication with the owner was great and we will consider renting again. If you are looking for granite countertops and/or lots of nearby eateries, you may need to look elsewhere. If you are seeking a truly serene escape, with the comforts of a real home, and the ability to access a stunning national treasure that is Acadia, you should consider a Rock Holme rental.

Quiet side is great

This house is located on the “quiet side” of the island which was perfect for us. It is right on the water and has good space for the whole family. Reine was very helpful in giving us information about the house, the neighborhood and the island. We had a great week!

Peaceful and Perfect

We loved our stay in this quaint beachfront home! The location was perfect for the relaxing atmosphere we were looking for. Our 3 boys had a blast exploring the rocks and tide pools. We had a campfire every night and enjoyed the stars and woke up to hot coffee with a view of the boats going out of the harbor. The kitchen had everything that we needed and our beds were very comfortable. We were a quick 20-30 minute drive to lots of hiking and biking carriage trails and swimming holes on the quiet side but it was also an easy drive to get to Bar Harbor for whale watching, Jordan Pond for biking and popovers, and Sand Beach for swimming. One of our highlights was an aerial tour of the island on Scenic Flights of Acadia - HIGHLY recommend! Our best dinners were at Beal's and Archie's, but we also enjoyed Seafood Ketch, Thurstons, the Upper Deck, and MDI Lobster - all very close! We can't wait to come back!

Family vacation

We had a wonderful time. The cottage was perfect for our time away. If you want to do a lot of activities out of Bar Harbor, it is good to be aware that you have about a 30-40 minute drive. We didn’t mind that. The trade off of the quiet setting more than makes up for the travel time.

Beautiful Coastal Home

This was my first time using VRBO and Reine made it very easy. The house was like a time capsule filled with beautiful trinkets and family treasures. The home was very comfortable and had a great location. My family had a terrific time and enjoyed the house very much. Reine gave us a lot of good tips and made the whole stay easier. This house was perfect for our family of five! The front porch view was stunning. We loved beach combing, eating fresh seafood and being able to get to Acadia NP easily. Reine was awesome to work with and shared so much about this house and area. The house was cozy and comfortable and had everything (and then some) that we needed. We had such a good time.

Coastal beauty

Amazing home in a very peaceful and secluded setting. Good communication and follow up with the owner. Breathtaking view, especially at sunrise and it’s directly on the rocky shoreline as described. Enjoyed the walks and exploring along the beach and stroll to Thurston’s for lobster. Although the furthest point from Bar Harbor - thus called Quietside - the drives are always breathtaking and plenty to see in the Bass Harbor area alone. Highly recommend Island Cruises out of Bass Harbor. Great stay and hope to stay again in this charming cottage by the sea.

Great vacation by the ocean

We just finished our first trip to Maine and everything was better than expected. Reine was very informative and the rental experience was easy from booking to departure. The home was well kept and the proximity to explore the seashore was great, and the drive to the busier side of the island was very easy. Our kids spent as much time as possible exploring the rocky shore and catching crabs and small shrimp. We would definitely recommend this property to other potential visitors!!

Why they chose this property

This was my parents' property. If it had not been for this property I may never have settled in the beautiful state of Maine. Even during the hottest of summer weather, it is usually very pleasant on the water here.

What makes this property unique

I have summered here all my life. My family came here every August from Long Island, New York. I remember the excitement arriving every summer, swimming at Long Pond, eating lobster, going to Jordan Pond, and hiking throughout Acadia's trails with my family and other relatives. Nice place to relax, unwind, smell the salt air, and pines. We arrived and immediately ran down to the beach to explore.
