Beautiful, clean, relaxing

This lovely house has everything you could possibly need for a cozy Berkshires getaway, and the hosts are amazing. Our second time staying here, and we will be back.

Comfort, Beauty & Serenity Exceeded All Expectations

The most amazing thing happened during our 10-day stay at Doug's cottage: we relaxed. There were no lists and no schedules; we even managed to completely forget a performance at Jacob's Pillow. That never happens with us; friends have said we "take trips, not vacations". I attribute it all to the almost magical nature of Doug's home. The property is immaculately clean and well-maintained, as well as beautifully appointed. Comfortable places inside and outside the house invite you to sit and enjoy the expansive views. We relished the peacefulness of the area, compared to Great Barrington, Lenox, et al. Though Sandisfield is a little farther south and east of where we usually stay, it is still convenient to all attractions. Swimming and kayaking are just a short stroll down the road at gorgeous (and virtually deserted) West Lake. Although the house is not air-conditioned, the cross-ventilation is excellent and there was almost always a breeze. We were there during a heatwave, daytime temps well into the 90's, yet evenings were cool and comfortable. Doug is a kind, thoughtful and generous host. If he ever considers selling his property (and he shouldn't!) I hope he contacts us first.

One of the best rental stays we've ever had

My partner and I stayed for 1 week for a wedding. No exaggeration: this was one of the best rental experiences we've ever had! The house is just gorgeous: spacious, but not too big, surrounded by huge windows; everything (furnishings, appliances) seemed quite new. We worked remotely while there and can confirm there are enough tables to spread out and have concurrent meetings. We were truly impressed by the yard and outdoor area -- we stayed mid June and the flowers and herb gardens around the house were in full bloom (lots of hummingbird visits!) and so nicely taken care of! Doug even called to confirm when we'd arrive to mow the lawn for us and set up a bouquet of fresh flowers from the garden -- so thoughtful! We barbecued most nights (kitchen is stocked with all sorts of baking trays, blenders, kabob skewers, other devices those who cook might use) and sat on the porch or napped in the hammock. Location is quiet and peaceful, full of sweet bird songs. Quick 20 min. drive to Great Barrington/other larger towns, and great hiking areas abound. Cannot recommend this spot enough -- we hope to return some day! Thanks so much for a great stay!

A Magical Spot

Our stay in the Berkshires could not have been better. Doug’s cottage was better than expected. It was amazing in so many ways…very clean and welcoming, well stocked and equipped, wonderful fire with plenty of wood, great heating, serenity++, hours of entertainment provided by the quirky birds visiting bird feeders as well as a perfect spot to explore the beautiful Berkshires. Thank you Doug for a wonderful week,

Best Host Ever!

We’ve been staying at online rentals for many years now, and I have no hesitation saying that Doug is our best host ever. His cozy and immaculate house was beautiful and exactly as advertised. More importantly, Doug provided every thoughtful touch we could think of and many more as well — from a bottle of wine to start the weekend to soap and firewood and meticulous directions about everything in and outside the house. We felt so well taken care of it was a joy to be here.

Beautiful home in the country

We stayed here last week and had such a wonderful time! As others have mentioned, this is a well-appointed, well-organized and extremely clean home that is clearly loved and cared for. We were wanting for nothing but a few provisions from the supermarket and were able to relax without worrying that we had left anything behind at home. We spent our days enjoying the peace and quiet and fresh air of the country, while our one- year old stationed herself by the windows to watch all the birds and squirrels eat from the feeders outside (as a city girl, she doesn’t get to see wildlife up-close very often). As for the hosts, I think they are the nicest people you could ever come across in your life! You simply cannot go wrong by choosing to stay here for your holiday in the Berkshires. My husband and I already miss the place and are planning to come back when the weather is warmer. Thank you Doug and Richard for your hospitality. We hope to see you soon!

Great place and location

This property was awesome. Beautifully decorated ( we must watch the same YouTube designers!). Clean clean clean! Did not disappoint. Very spacious for two baby boomers. Extremely well stocked and appointed. Communication was clear and easy. You can tell the property is well cared for and loved by the owners. We hiked most days and had dinner out in neighboring towns. The grounds are expertly landscaped. I bet winter is fantastic here with a delightful fire in the fireplace.

A gem!

We had the loveliest time here! The house was spotless, impeccably decorated and well stocked - the kitchen had everything you could need. The gardens were gorgeous and at their peak when we visited. We spent the days moving from deck, to screen porch, to lawn. The hosts were gracious and flexible when severe weather impacted our arrival dates. West lake is a very short walk away and an excellent swimming spot. Grocery shopping is a bit of a trek away, but you won’t want to leave the house anyways. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend!

A gem in the Berkshires

My husband and I spent ten days in the Berkshires at this lovely, quiet, clean, organized house. The house has everything you would need even if you never wanted to go out. BUT the area is filled with exciting things to do, no matter the weather. On cold days we walked and did outside activities. On warm days we went to one of the nearby swimming beaches and enjoyed the water and the sun. The host was always available and unflappable. Nothing was ever a problem. I would recommend this house to anyone!

Perfect getaway

My husband and I had the most relaxing getaway to Doug's home in the Berkshires. The house is comfortable, full of natural light, quiet, and has all the amenities you could possibly ask for! Close to a gorgeous lake (even when it's frozen over), as well as tons of hikes and the town of Great Barrington. We did not want to leave, and can't wait for a summer visit to this amazing property!

Wonderful home for peaceful relaxation in nature.

Such a lovely and thoughtful home that Doug and Richard have made available to guests as though they are friends or family they know. Their hospitality is felt throughout in many thoughtful touches. The house is in a somewhat remote location, which I enjoyed. Hikes and walks are easy to find nearby, also a wonderful West Lake just a few minute walk away. For a longer walk, there's York Lake and Southfield with a great coffee shop cafe. I really enjoyed my stay and Doug and Richard were wonderful hosts throughout.

Sandisfield

Very cute little house in the Berkshires -- even nicer, in my view, than the photos make it out to be. This is not just a rental income property, but a home that the owners clearly care about a lot and attend to -- so, there are lots of nice smaller touches often missing in short term rentals (e.g., kitchen is well-equipped, mattresses are comfortable, etc.) . We really enjoyed putting out the bird feeders and watching all the birds descend onto the property. Two nice lakes across the road make for a nice little walk through the woods. Great place for a quiet, peaceful escape. Responsive owners. We would definitely try to return next time we wanted to come to the area.

A great find for our Berkshires getaway!

I can't say enough good things about this property. The house is at once cozy and spacious, tastefully decorated, clean, and exceptionally well-equipped and organized. We felt right at home and able to relax from the minute we arrived. The well-cared for gardens and grounds are a special bonus. So lovely! The location is convenient to the many wonderful sights and cultural events in the area, and it's just a short walk to the very peaceful and quiet West Lake. No cell service at the house, but there is a landline if you need it, and the wi-fi was mostly reliable. Doug was available, accommodating, and responsive. We'd never been to Sandisfield before but would definitely return!

Lovely house in the South Berkshires

This is a lovely house in the South Berkshires. We're used to the "traditional" Berkshire rental: a little run down, a little musty, with about 25 years of owners' knickknacks on display, and noisy neighbors close by. If that's what you like, don't rent this house! It’s recently renovated so the inside is new -- and very nicely finished. The kitchen is super well equipped and included tons of food. Little finishing touches made it seem like a casual boutique hotel. Relaxed but delightful. And that's just the inside. Outside is a huge lawn (lots of open space, no other houses in sight) with dramatic plantings, beautiful flowers, a vibrant vegetable garden, and tons of birds. More goldfinches than I've ever seen in one place, plus woodpeckers, hummingbirds, etc. A short walk (under 5 minutes) to West Lake, which has to be one of the quietest lakes around -- no motor boats, often no people. There's no real beach and the bottom is kind of rocky but the water is great. You can drive a short way to more conventional swimming places with lifeguards and roped off areas (York, Lake Garfield, Benedict Pond) but we didn't bother. It's a bit of a drive to Tanglewood, Outlet Mall, supermarkets, etc., so you'll want to consolidate those trips. Internet is excellent; cell phone is okay (find a good spot and don't wander around). There's also a land line. Bedrooms are a drop snug but fine. Livingroom/dining area is roomy and the screen porch (with another dining table) is really the best place to eat. Only one bathroom but there's also an outdoor shower (why shower indoors when you can be outside??). Big almost empty double garage for your cars (if you want) or just use it for bikes – or as a workout space if you have a rainy day. Doug was relaxed and accommodating and is just an email away if you have any questions.

Summer Heaven

We highly recommend this place. Really special -- the perfect combination of simplicity and comfort with the focus on the beautiful garden and wildlife. We arrived from a smoggy foreign capital to find a note asking us to take anything we wanted out of the vegetable and flower gardens and promptly did -- devouring the broccoli and checking for ripe strawberries every day. The children raced around on the lawn doing all of the things they can't do in the city; kicking off shoes to pick flowers, collect crab apples, chase frogs, birds and butterflies and hurl water at eachother. When they got tired of this we walked a few minutes up the road to West Lake and went canoeing or drove ten minutes to York Lake for swimming and blueberry picking or Lake Garfield for free swimming and more kids. This is an amazing place for running (lots of dirt roads) and cycling (lots of small roads without many cars). Monterey General Store or Southfield Store are cozy spots for coffee and gourmet food a ten or fifteen minute drive away. The beautiful Southfield Canaan road takes you to Stop and Shop for groceries(20 minutes) or you can drive 30 minutes to Price Chopper, Guidos, Big Y, Food Coop in Great Barrington. The house is snug and simple, not fancy but very clean, light and well designed with excellent water pressure and heating and is well stocked. There is a porch for eating. Nice neighbors. Perfect owners -- generous, helpful and accessible, unobtrusive.
