About this property

Chatham Village - Adorable Studio Apartment in Antique Home

** SHIP'S LIGHT IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A MAJOR RENOVATION! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house now has a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. Interior painting is underway and new floors have been laid. Tiling and cabinetry is underway; we expect to begin renting again in July 2025, when the house will be ready for the next 200 years!

The layout of the Prince Harding apartment will remain the same, but it will be entirely refreshed, with air conditioning and heating provided by solar-powered heat pumps. There is a cozy electric fireplace in the sitting area, an improved kitchen and bath with tiled shower, and a new queen-sized bed and furnishings in the living area. The house is equipped with two Level 2 EV chargers, for use by renters. We look forward to hosting you again soon! **

Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for almost 200 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1825, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.

Named for the original owner and builder of Ship's Light, the Prince Harding apartment is a one-room studio, with a kitchenette, bath with shower and lovely front porch. Airy and light, the main room includes a queen-sized bed, dining table & chairs, comfortable seating area, electric fireplace, and smart-TV with cable. Wireless internet service is available throughout the house. Perfect for a couple, the fully-equipped kitchenette has a small refrigerator with freezer, induction cook-top, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. Enjoy your morning coffee on the private front porch with your loved one or watch the sunset while sipping a glass of wine. The charm of the apartment is further enhanced by the warm glow of newly-laid wide pine and antique floors.

Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.

The Prince Harding apartment at Ship’s Light is rented for longer stays during the summer and for minimum two night stays during the shoulder and off-seasons. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5-bedroom home for family gatherings.

Perfect location

An easy stroll to town, the shops and restaurants. A short drive to Monomoy Wildlife Refuge for a nice scenic hike. Owner very responsive to questions and assisted when I requested to stay an additional night.

Charming

The property is exactly as presented! No surprises. Small, but well supplied for two. The location is ideal! The owners responded very quickly to a small issue we encountered. Would love to return!!

Nice stay

The apartment was quaint and located nicely on a quiet street just off the main street in Chatham. The kitchen was very clean and so were the appliances that were there. The kitchen and bathroom areas were tiny. The air conditioner only cooled the bedroom area. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay and would have liked to meet the owners! Thank you.

Don't Change aThing

We both loved everything about The Ship's Light. We ate breakfast on the front porch every morning and enjoyed wine there in the evening. In between, we walked to Main Street every day (less than 5 minutes away). We walked to baseball games, craft fairs, garden tours, musical events, the windmill, shopping and dining (including Lobster roll Friday at the Methodist Church). This property is a jewel.

Location Location Location

Beautiful 19th century home located just one block from downtown, an easy walk to restaurants and shopping. Perfect for two people. Privacy low as people in the adjacent unit could be heard through door/wall. Recommended that our family put on their suggestion list for visitors.

Property was listed as available, but….

The property was listed as available off season, VRBO sent the standard emails, but when we arrived to begin our stay, the property was locked. We were not able to reach the managers, so had to scramble to find lodging. VRBO was able to get us a full refund. Reviews of this property during high season were positive, but would not recommend trying to rent odd season.

really great well maintained rental! as a solo traveler it was all I needed. great hosts. I'd probably recommend booking something slightly larger if you have a week long stay, but for a long weekend it's perfect for the price.

Disappointed/Property needs updating

Read reviews, mostly positive. Not for me. Needs major updating, even the ink on pamphlet's was faded. I walked into the small kitchen and bathroom area, and it had a peculiar smell, like old fruit. It was such penetrating smell I realized I could not stay there. It made me feel very uncomfortable.I checked the sheets on the bed. Washed too many times. It was my vacation and I knew it would not seem like a vacation if I spent my time in this accommodation. I arrived at 4:30 and left around 5:30pm. What was off putting too-- was in their literature to ask if one has time to wash the towels in the laundry in the garage before they left. Not my cup of tea. Fortunately, found a better and less expensive accommodation down the road, with access to a beach.

About the host

Hosted by Allison Coleman

Host profile image
The Coleman family has owned and loved Ship's Light since the mid-1970s. Like several owners before her, Lena Coleman lived at Ship’s Light year-round and rented its apartments to summer visitors. After she passed away, Bill, Roz and Allison Coleman undertook successive renovations and updates to the property, continuing to rent it during the summers to long-time friends and new guests. It has been a labor of love to work on this lovely house over the decades and it evokes in us strong memories of the generations that have come before us; in their honor, we have named each apartment. Lena, like others before her, looked forward to the summers when her long-time renters would return to visit, bringing with them stories of their winter months and great friendships built over many years; we are proud to continue this hospitable tradition in the heart of Chatham.

Why they chose this property

What makes this property unique

Located on a quiet street just off Main Street, Ship's Light is perfectly located and convenient to everything. You can walk downtown to shop in Chatham's great stores, enjoy a meal at a great restaurant, get ice cream, see a movie at the recently-restored Orpheum Theater and attend Friday night Band Concerts; it's a short walk to the public library and Methodist, Episcopal and Congregational churches; other churches also nearby. Chase Park and the grist mill are right around the corner; Oyster Pond (a nice swimming beach) is a short 1/4 mile stroll; the Atlantic Ocean is about 1 mile away. Visitors love to sit and read on the porches and decks overlooking Cross Street and Shattuck Place; from these private perches you can put your feet up and watch the world go by.
