About this property

5BR Hilltop Wine country home w pool and spectacular views near Alba and Barolo

As far as "enogastronomic" touring, wine country hiking and road cycling destinations go, this area cannot be beat. As a base from which to explore the area, I have a restored but still rustic country home on a hilltop surrounded by vineyards of the Langhe Roero and Asti areas, with views to the alps. Ideal for families and groups up to 12 people. Five bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, large family room / kitchen with fireplace. Outdoor cooking, dining and entertaining areas with barbecue and pizza oven, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fruit trees, herb garden, 4 car carport, solar panels. A real home, not a hotel-style rental property. Short drive to Alba, Barolo, Barbaresco, Canale, Asti and less than 1 hr from Torino. When not rented this remains my home, so care and respect are necessary ingredients. Additional pictures available on request.
Custom tours, catering services, bicycle or Vespa rentals, horse rides, wine tastings and much more can be organized on request.

House with spectecular panoramic view surrounded by vineyardss
We had a great time there with children, aunt and grandparents. Ample space for everybody and cosy evenings in front of the chimney fire. You can buy the vines produced from the grapes around the house at the neighbor's.

spectacular location and place
It's a perfect place for a large family, very reasonable, clean renovated country farmhouse. Wonderful pool perched at edge of property enjoying a glass of wine and cheese. Mart is well connected into the area and can provide catering, recommendations for dinner and has an in with many vintners. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful rural Piedmont home
This home was well off the beaten path near San Damiano d'Asti. It shows all the signs of being wonderfully cared for as the owner's own home. The view off the deck around the swimming pool had beautiful sunsets over Cisterna d'Asti, surrounded by vineyards, and the very occaisional walker or driver going to the nearby Agriturismo. The bed was quite comfortable (always a risk), and the kitchen was completely equipped. We hope to be able to return.

What a magical place
We just loved it! This place with its rustic and romantic charm captivated us. The view is breathtaking, the facilities more than complete (who offers table tennis, a pizza oven, a gas barbeque or 4 coffee machines, any style?). 3 patios in each direction allow you to follow or hide from the sun, just as you like it. Kaya is a charming person and always helpful with all questions you might have. But watch out: This is an old farmhouse with a centuries-old tradition - everybody, who expects a luxury five-star golf resort & spa with modern design furniture does not deserve this graceful spot. We can´t wait to come back ! Best regards to Kaya and Mart

Perfect place with incredible view
Very charming old house on the hill top in the vineyards with the most incredible view through out the valley and to the town of Cisterna D'Asti. It was so quite and peaceful. We stayed two families - 8 people total and there was so much space. A nice pool and a Hot Tub and in the nice garden we haved acces to herbs and vegtables. Upon arrival the nice host Kaya served a nice tapas with local wine and she had a lot of local recommendations for both wine visits, restaurants and local stores in the nearby cities. The communication with the host was easy with promtly answers if we had any questions. We highly reccomend this place for vacation in Piedmonte and it would be a pleasure to came back.

Perfect holidays with all the Family!
For my father's 70th birthday, we had a wonderful week for 10 people. From grandparents to grandchildren, everyone fell in love with this house, not to mention the breathtaking view. All bedrooms and bathrooms are well appointed and decorated with a lot of taste. The 3 different outdoor terraces allow you to make the most of the sunshine or to get in the shade of the pergola depending on the time of day. A warm welcome from the host and aperitif awaited us. The owner's daughter was lovely and available to share very good tips such as best restaurants & shops in the region. We also had access to fruits & vegetables from the garden to really feel at home! Amazing swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, grills, and perfect kitchen very well furnished. Grazie Mille !

Outstanding property, as described and more
This large, ambling farmhouse far exceeded our expectations as a site for our family gathering. Views from this property are superb, fine pool, large, well-stocked kitchen, country roads for long walks, San Damiano has good shopping, a fine bike shop for rentals (Cicli Giorgio), and at least a couple of decent restaurants (ask Mart for tips). Further afield is Barolo and Barbaresco, with Roero right next door. This is a very personal rental experience. The family was helpful at every turn. The Pizza oven is first rate, big enough for 2-3 pizzas at once, given some skill with the peel. Plenty of firewood available (firewood gathering seems to be an important part of the local culture). I would love to visit again, having the chance to sample what this area (and house) has to offer.

Beautiful location, in need of some improvements
Location is lovely. Top of a hill surrounded by vineyards and with great views. The house is rustic. If you like the idea of a holiday feeling like you are in someone’s house-this is for you. Very well equipped in the kitchen. Some rooms a bit cluttered with owners personal effects. Pool furniture old and falling apart. Towels worn out. Be aware one bedroom had a futon on a mezzanine floor. Owners dog barking was annoying. Unfortunately we came home from a day out to find that we had been robbed. Handbag, cash, credit cards jewellery and rather strangely womens shoes. Despite this we had fun and celebrated a 60th birthday with a catered dinner.

Great space, a few hiccups
This house provided a great space and home base for three couples, with spacious bedrooms, 3.5 baths, excellent kitchen, dining & living area, additional den, laundry, and lovely outdoor space with lots of amenities, including pizza oven, pool etc. Sitting atop a hill, it offered great views and ease of proximity to San Damiano, Alba and other nearby towns. I would give the property a 5; however, we encountered mechanical issues with the boiler that was the source of hot water and heat. Our host, Kaya, had let us know before we departed the US that the boiler was malfunctioning and she was working diligently to get a plumber to resolve it. When we arrived, she said he had corrected it but within two days, it failed. Kaya was very attentive to the situation and guided us through a work around. But the uncertainty of hot water added some stress to our stay. The boiler continued to be erratic. Kaya could only do so much and finally called the plumber. The system seemed to work the final night of our stay. (We could also not get the hot tub to heat the water.) In hindsight, we should have done a thorough walk-through with Kaya to ensure all the equipment was functioning and also how the boiler system work. (One wall radiator never came on.) Bottom line: it's a really nice, large comfortable country home in a great location with many accoutrements. I am confident the mechanical issues will be resolved before the next renters arrive.

Awesome location, breathtaking views
This house had by far the best views in over 20 years of spending holidays in homes in Italy. The house is literally in the vineyards. We're welcomed with some snacks and wine which made us feel right at home. In the morning you can already enjoy breakfast in the sun which does not stop until the sun sets in the evening. We did a 10K walk from the house around the hills and from many places you’ll see the house as landmark. Beautifull and full of vineyards. The house is very spacious and in fact with just 6 people we'd not used several rooms at all. All rooms are huge. The fireplace was great for the colder evenings, the house had everything you'd need - just bring food. The pool was clean, a little chilly as we were here early in the season. I was pleasantly surprised there was a jacuzzi, I had somehow missed that prior. We loved every minute in and around the house. The only thing that we 'd seen as something that could be updated a bit was in the kitchen. The cabinet under the sink was a bit worn out and sealant on top could be refreshed.

Magical Week on the Hilltop
Six of us — four adults and two children — spent a wonderful week at this very large house in late May. We picked this week for optimum weather and we got beautiful days — what we didn’t expect was the bounty of fruits and vegetables available to us on the property then. The cherry tree was full; the children loved strawberries from the garden each morning; we found apricots just ripening, and there was zucchini in the vegetable garden. Kaya, the house manager, offered access to all of it to us. We picked this house because it has character, and it is exactly as it appears online. It’s not a flashy rental; it’s an authentic Italian house with a pool and tons of amenities; any quirks are no big deal. It’s located at the top of a hill in the middle of vineyards with spectacular views; drinking coffee and looking out at the view every morning was magical. Kaya was so helpful in setting up vineyard visits and dinner reservations and provided all sorts of good guidance. The area nearby has lots of beautiful hill towns and little villages that are authentic and not like the tourist meccas in Tuscany or Umbria. The Langhe wine region and Turin are all close. The only heads up is that it is located on a narrow gravel road, and GPS sometimes will advise you to get up the hill on what are almost impassable farm roads. Two roads that take you up the hill off of Via Valmolina are the best options. We loved this place, and were happy to have picked a perfect time to come.

Authentic Italian countryside experience
The first thing you’ll notice is the view: lush vineyards and storybook villages. We spent quite a bit of time by the pool just taking in the views and sunsets. The sounds are equally enchanting—church bells & cuckoo birds. The house, while not a luxury rental, has genuine character: spacious, comfortable, & filled with interesting mementos, books and art, like staying in the home of a well-traveled friend. You can take walks and see lots of different fruit & olive trees. We could also pick fresh herbs & vegetables from the garden. Overall, it was an authentic Italian farmhouse experience in a real agricultural setting. Property manager was lovely & is well-connected to area food/wine scene. She provided many recommendations of places to visit & set up winery tours & private chefs — all were a hit. She lives nearby and was responsive when small things came up. Cleaning service did a great job tidying up the house mid-stay when we had new guests arriving. San Damiano is fun to explore with cafes & a weekly market. A few downsides: - Summers are warm! 1 upstairs room has a/c; others have fans. But it does cool off at night, & there’s the pool! - Some bugs. 1 bedroom had window screens, another had mosquito netting. We brought Thermacells. Overall, insects a mild nuisance but manageable - Due to drought, a few nights the local water authority reduced water pressure overnight, but it came back in the AM After staying here, we’re already planning to come back to Piedmont.

Prachtige ligging

Haus an aussergewöhnlicher Lage

About the host

Hosted by Mart Pearson

Host profile image
I have been a resident in Piedmont since 1988 and have always enjoyed sharing the beauty of this place with friends and visitors. Food and wine have become my passions and also a great way to meet new people. I have a 'short list' of favorite local wine producers and restaurants but I still feel like I am a beginner, a kid in a candy shop. I am happy to make introductions and suggestions.
My three girls are now grown up have left the nest for far and wide. I want to keep the house, but don't need to live in it full time. It is a place that deserves to be shared and loved. This house has been home for all of us and has grown with us, restored and improved bit by bit over these 20+ years (with many more improvement projects in the hopper). We are travelers and the house reflects that, with lots of objects and details that are very personal (and sometimes quirky) and tell stories. There are lots of books to read and browse, including guide books of the area. I can be around during rentals or not, depending on the preference of renters. I enjoy meeting people and am happy to share my knowledge of and appreciation for this area. I am also happy to participate in local tours, shopping, cooking, wine tasting, singing, ping pong games and other good times. I hope that guests will contribute ideas, thoughts, reflections, advice and suggestions for improvement in benefit for future guests.
The name "il mestolo", literally a ladle, is intended to suggest the stirring, mixing and tasting of various ingredients put together. We have had seminars, parties, reunions, retreats, concerts - of all kinds and have enjoyed them all.
Every opportunity to learn is a gift. Every new person we meet presents an opportunity to learn. I look forward to meeting you.

Why they chose this property

When you see it you will know. When I first saw it in 1997 it was just a country house on a hill, in need of a lot of work, but what a location!! (What were those 3 important things? Location, location and location?) Now I think the house and garden area are nearly up to the level of the views. Some of the house is still "in the rough", but that's one of the fun things about being here - you can imagine the next set of improvements. Most people who have spent time here use words like 'magical' to describe it. Very good energy. There are multiple 'outdoor rooms', different gathering places for different times of the day or for different sub-groups of your party. In the summer the pool is an obvious point of convergence but the indoor spaces are also special and accommodating. The spaces lend themselves to groups and sharing.

What makes this property unique

Amazing views, peace and quiet, lots of character. Great space for cooking together.
