It's a beautiful cabin on a very narrow, twisty, dirt road. I was scared driving it at night so tried to be back before dark. The day view is magnificent from the deck.

We spent a week in beautiful Leatherwood Mountains at the lovely High Horse. Spectacular views from the wonderful wrap around deck. Very welcoming and comfortable family space. The Leatherwood employees at were very accommodating and pleasant. We took a 1 hour trail ride (wishing we had time for more) and our guide was exceptional. If you are looking to disconnect (this home has fiber optic internet so you don't have to fully disconnect) and relax, this is the place to do it.

Reviewer Comments:
Very relaxing time away. Leatherwood offers so many beautiful aspects of nature to allow a person to relax and unwind. I’ve stayed in several different houses in Leatherwood over the years. This stay in High Horse was a little disappointing when compared to other houses. It was very nicely decorated and very well furnished, especially in the kitchen. However this house needs some repairs and better maintenance. The roof leaks at the doors near the tv kitchen cabinet doors were loose and the front windows have frames that have rotted away. The biggest disappointment was the hot tub. This tub is in great disrepair. There are no filters and the waterlogged cover weighs 300 pounds and broken into two parts. It had not been cleaned when we arrived. Upon leaving it was brought to my attention that the owner and Leatherwood were aware of the situation. It was also mentioned that the owner ordered new hot tub several months ago. Rentals in Leatherwood are not cheap and I feel that houses and especially hot tubs should be kept in good condition or customers should be made aware of known problems prior to arrival.

We loved every minute of our stay at High Horse! The cabin is private, comfortable and very clean. Cabin has everything you need for a nice vacation. Hot tub is very relaxing and has great mountain top views. Love Leatherwood and staff is so friendly and helpful. The resort never seemed crowded as we had the pool to ourselves when we decided to go down the mountain. Best part about the cabin is plenty of comfortable seating in living room and back deck is wonderful. Highly recommend this cabin and hope to return soon!!
Stayed here with my adult children for family time. Very relaxing, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed!

Loved it. Only had a few things that could have been better, but did not have any significant impact on our stay. Absolutely beautiful otherwise.

I've been coming to leatherwood for 20 years now, but this was my first stay at high horse. The decorations were a bit outdated, but everything was so comfortable and thoughtful, we didn't care! The beds are comfy, there's plenty of blankets, and the kitchen is super well equipped, even down to deviled egg and corn trays (there was a saute pan and grill lighter lacking, but as a vacation rental owner myself, a previous guest likely walked away with those). Games and toys for kids, easiest parking on the mountain, and a huge hot tub, though note that removing the cover is a 2 person job. Remember to bring kindling! But the wood burning fireplace throws off a ton of heat

Not the place for me
Pros: Beautiful views. The beds felt nice. The wood burning stove was awesome.
Cons: Tiny roads leading to up to the cabin that haven’t been maintained at all. The sides of the roads were broken and chipped off which could lead to your car falling over the mountain. No guard rails. No cell reception for 30 miles. No food or restaurants for 45 minutes. They have a restaurant at the bottom of the mountain but it’s only open for a few hours on Friday night and a few hours Saturday and Sunday morning . If it snows while you’re there you’re basically stuck even with 4 wheel drive because of the already crappy roads covered in snow making it hard to see where the drop offs are.
I always come in and give the place I stay a cleaning before I put my things away. The blanket was in a ball on the couch, I’m assuming from the last renters. The counter tops in the kitchen were brown when I wiped them down, which I had to do several times before they weren’t brown anymore. Left over open condiments were left inside of the fridge.
Each night stink bugs would crawl on you as you watched tv in the living room.
The hot tub had so much chlorine in it that I itched for hours after getting out, finally having to take Benadryl to get relief. The hot tub cover looked like it was held together by tape. As soon as you turn on the jet’s the heater stops working, so it gets cold quickly. Trash was floating in the hot tub with no way to get it out other than your hands, it doesn’t help with the small dirt from the bottom that floats and sticks on you while you’re in the hot tub.
That’s my honest review. I wouldn’t stay here again

We had a perfect Christmas holiday in this cabin (6 adults). The kitchen was surprisingly well outfitted, we had plenty of space to spread out and were very comfortable. There's a gorgeous view and we spent plenty of time watching the mist roll over the mountains from the hot tub or the Adirondack chairs on the deck. We were delighted to arrive to the cabin and find it decked with a Christmas tree and lights- very cute. An unexpected benefit was the miles and miles of trails within walking distance of the cabin. The cabin was surprisingly 30 minutes from any restaurants or grocery stores, which was fine for us, but might be noteworthy for other guests.

Our mini'getaway vacation was just ok. The hostess at the desk was not so friendly. We felt like we were in the wrong neighborhood. Wen we finally found the house/cabin[had to ride around a couple of times, direction and signage not very clear)as we entered we immediately sensed a smell that stayed with us the weekend. The refrigerator was dirty inside and had a leak. Friday night there was a storm and the tv went out so we saw the vcr/DVD . We could not get that to work. Never got the TV's to come on in the bedrooms. In the basement the sliding glass door would not lock.
Had a wonderful time at Leatherwood. Beautiful views and very quiet. You have neighboring homes but you would never know it while being on the property. I would recommend leaving early to make any particular dinner plans or just take enough food for all your meals. Takes about 45 minutes to get to Boone or Blowing rock. One other thing I would mention is that this house, however clean on the inside, definitely needs some outside love. Gutters were full and overflowing, Plants growing out of them in places. With this being a timber frame type house leaving the gutters like that will most assuredly lead to rot and leaks. Would definitely recommend this property to others though. Beautiful.

Reviewer Comments:
We rented High Horse as a midway point to meet our son who lives north. We were very pleased with the property. The cabin was clean, bathrooms were very nice. The bedding was fresh and comfortable. The property is older but kept up. It has three levels with lots of room so even with six of us we never felt crowded. Everything worked, although in full transparency we only watched TV for a few minutes. The kitchen had everything but a pizza cutter! Well stocked for cooking meals. The views are great from the deck and although it rained each day for a while it was actually nice watching the smokey mountain views more than the sunny views! This is a great cabin for quiet connection with a few family or friends.
We escaped the hot summer COVID filled Florida beaches and headed for a cool secluded mountain retreat. It was marvelous! The house is cute and comfortable and we especially loved sitting out on the porch and watching the mountain mist. Great sunset views from the hot tub. A trip into Blowing Rock and a stop at the Amish Bread store and produce stand produced some wonderful corn on the cob, fresh blackberries and peach pound cake. Also took a day trip to Asheville and found the audio tour of the Biltmore very well done and very well socially distanced, perhaps better than at normal crowded non-COVID times! Also enjoyed hiking the meadow and across the ridge in Daniel Boone. Wish we had had more time away! Will definitely try to come back in the fall.
The medium / long range view from the deck cannot be beat. Tons of space both indoor and outdoor. Nice large hot tub, well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, and plenty of space. Two very comfortable living rooms. Check-in and check-out was very easy from the front office. Only ding against this place is that the trek to the cabin is a bit long and can be confusing (even with directions) once on the Leatherwood property, but it's a small price to pay for the privacy and view. We will be back!
