Fantastic home

Well equipped, clean, quiet and spacious home. We were in town for a wedding and were able to get a lot of our family in one home. Everyone enjoyed the stay and could say enough about the property.

Perfect for Tulip Festival

This was a great home base for our visit to the tulip festival. We were close to Holland, but far away from the festival crowd. The lake view was even better than expected. We spent time on the pier and wished that it had been late enough in the season so that the pontoon was already in the water. This was an enjoyable stay.

Cameras were not disclosed on listing

Would have found another place to stay if we had known about the cameras on front porch, two on deck stairs, one in hot tub area. Felt like a violation of privacy and something that should be disclosed and according to VRBO policy it should have been.

Peace and Quiet on the Water

A lovely setting with a nicely equipped kitchen and plenty of deck area as well as dockside space. Clean, with lots of games and beach towels. The idled pontoon boat was a must, since there is nowhere to stand or sit at the water’s edge.

Wonderful Lakehouse!

We had an amazing time on our vacation and Chris's place was the best place to stay! Fennville is a great town with everything you need close by and a short drive to the beautiful Lake Michigan. His lakehouse is very equipped and we enjoyed the views, watching sunsets on the pontoon and hanging out. Weather was perfect. Chris was great at communicating and answered any questions we had. We will definitely be back! :)

Work retreat

We went for a work retreat and the house itself was very nice. I really wish the lake was closer to the house for the price we paid. There were also neighbors at the lake that were policing us. Telling us not to play music because it echoes (at 6:30 pm) and there were about 40 neighbors that took over the dock that was shared so we are made to feel like outsiders invading their space. We were even asked if we were renters and made to feel like we couldn't have fun because of that. Well, we paid an obscene amount of money for just a day to have fun together. Next time we will book something more secluded. None of this is the fault of the property owner though. It's just not the place to go if you're looking to let loose and have fun at a lake with a group of people.

Nice quiet neighborhood

Short walk to the lake. Beautiful area. Master bed was very comfortable. Didn’t have any complaints about the others except for down stairs queen bedroom under the bed we found mold. House was clean but does have a smell of mildew, really bad in basement area. Once we aired it out upstairs it wasn’t unlivable. We still enjoyed ourselves and would probably stay again.

Cousins weekend

There were just three of us, so we only used the main level. It was a rainy weekend so we did not use the hot tub. Was looking forward to that. Rooms seemed smaller than the pictures but it was fine for us. Lower level had a musty smell, but it was a wet and rainy weekend. Lake view was obstructed by the beautiful colored leaves in the trees so it was only a short walk to the dock. Had a great time. Towels in bathrooms were very plush.

Paradise in Saugatuck

A picture fell off the wall near kitchen table and cut one of my guest. Very disappointed to see the picture was not secured to the wall in any reasonable fashion. The mirror in the basement bedroom fell on my grandson, thankfully my wife caught the mirror no injury. Again disappointed to see the large mirror was not secured to the wall in any reasonable fashion. Stairs to the basement are a tripping hazard. The stair treads have some form of retro-fit rubber being used not for what it is intended. When we arrived the house had been cleaned fairly. After our stay I have emailed and called the owner. No response and no reply. Postives, the house was as advertised, great access to kayaks and lake. Beds very confortable, great kitchen. Beautiful setting, hot tube was great. Location to city was great. I would has scored 5 stars on all acounts except for what I mentioned at the beginning.

A wonderful getaway

Very clean, spacious, and provided everything we needed to be comfortable and accommodated for a week long stay. The hot tub was great and very reliable, the bed was comfortable, and the the house was well-equipped with lots of seasonally appropriate outdoor gear, even for Winter. The owner was very attentive to our needs and quick to respond the couple of times we needed to consult her. We vacationed there during the Winter, and a very big storm came through. We were happy to be snowed in because the house provided everything we needed to relax and have fun without even leaving! The hot tub, sledding in the backyard, a hike by the lake, and the house indoors itself were so enjoyable. Thank you for the hospitality, and we definitely recommend!

Quiet spot to chill

This was just as the listing stated. Quiet neighborhood, (nice neighbors also). Lovely shady place to read and relax, short walk to docks where you can relax some more. Truly a lake house, not so fussy that it makes you uncomfortable, but literally everything you will need to rest or play. Lots of space (more than we needed), and well supplied, from the bathrooms to the kitchen. We weren’t sure about having one shower, but it was totally fine. It was nice having paddle boards, kayaks, life vests etc, and the boat to chill on. Used the fire pit which was fun, and the hot tub looked lovely, but we didn’t use it just because the weather was so nice at the lake. The owner is very responsive, which was great. We would recommend this place to others.

Enjoyed our stay

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Chris' place on Hutchins Lake. The location was good. Only a 10 minute drive to downtown Saugatuck and the Lake Michigan beaches. But much more affordable than a house on the big lake. Chris was a great host. The house was very nice, clean and well stocked for a rental. Everything you could think of was provided, including beach towels. The only real complaint we had is that the basement was pretty musty smelling when we arrived. It got better over the weekend, but the musty smell never fully went away. And while the bunk beds aren't the most comfortable for adults, they would be perfect for kids. The lake was very nice and calm, but shallow with a mucky bottom. The toys were great for floating. The pontoon was also a nice option for hanging out and watching the sunset. Not sure that we'd stay again for our annual girls trip. But I would recommend this place for 1-2 families, looking for a relaxing and peaceful getaway.

The Perfect Place!

All I can say is WOW! Chris was the most gracious host, responding to all my silly questions within an hour. She always had an answer and would make sure we didn't need help with anything else. When we got to the house, it was perfect. We were a group of four re-uniting friends who haven't seen each other in ages. It had everything we needed! Every size pot, pan, baking sheet, utensil, BOTTLE OPENER, and serving spoon we needed. Even ziplocks, paper towels, and garbage bags to boot! The home has a rustic feel but with very nice, modern appliances. During the day, we would play card games, share stories, and just enjoy each others company while the wood stove roared in the background. The hot tub was a great place to relax and wind down before bed. This home has PLENTY of sleeping options. The area is nice. A quiet neighborhood just minutes from town. We only explored the local grocery store, but the selection was plentiful and the people were friendly. The surrounding neighbors were also incredibly friendly. We had a great time and hope to reconnect again at this same location soon. Maybe even a summer trip! Would DEFINITELY recommend.

Enjoyed our stay

We had a great time over Mother’s Day week. We were from out of state and visiting family in Holland. The house has 3 bedrooms and one room that has bunk beds for 4, kids loved the bunk bed room. Property has games and toys available for use which was good for us we love board games. Kitchen is upgraded nicely, has pretty much everything we needed to cook and prepare food. Full bath is spacious and half bath is updated. Balconies were lovely for birdwatching or morning coffee. We saw a beautiful black and yellow grosbeak, woodpeckers, several cardinals, and finches. The neighborhood is quiet and wooded, and very relaxing!! Walking to the dock is only a short way across the yard and down the road. The kayaks were a lot of fun to use on the lake. Lake Hutchins is sandy and pretty shallow throughout. The water is clear and was perfect for catching perch, small mouth, and kids had fun learning to kayak when they could see the bottom. Hot tub was a nice amenity and has a privacy partition. TVs have different dvd, channel and streaming service availability so be prepared to rotate around to find the one that works if you aren’t tech savvy and travel with devices to play off TV wirelessly. The house is close to Holland, South Haven, Saugatuck, Douglas, or Allegan, or Benton Harbor. It really is a great location for being able to enjoy local life. Crane’s Farm is barely five minutes away with locally made cider and wine, and their food and pie are wonderful. We also had an adult in a wheelchair and the house was accessible enough for us with them and the chair. The stairs outside to get we had to lift them up but if you have a similar situation the house works. We had a great time and would stay again.

About the host

Hosted by Chris Parkinson

Host profile image
I bought this house after falling in love with Lake Hutchins. My 16 year old son just loves to play on this lake and so do I!

Why they chose this property

This house has all the benefits of being right on the lake with a view and a private pier, but without the expense of actually being right on the lake. It is the best of both worlds!

What makes this property unique

The location of this house is perfect because it is quiet and away from all of the business of Saugatuck, yet if you want to experience what that has to offer you're only minutes away from it, as well as some beautiful Lake Michigan beaches.

You have the beauty and recreation of a smaller lake that is spring fed with a sand bottom and easy to swim in by Memorial day!
