Very Bright, clean and cozy private, level, lakefront Maine Cottage sitting right at the water's edge on a wrap-around point in a secluded, sunny cove on 3500+ acre, peacefull Great Moose Lake (Hartland, Maine). Fully-equipped, modern kitchen, comfortably sleeps 4-5, 2.5-acre property with 365 feet of beautiful, private, birch, pine, and spruce-lined, western and southerly-facing shoreline, with a sunny shallow sandy beach on a sheltered, quiet cove, and up-close, panoramic views of the lake. Great Moose Lake is quiet and not developed like the Belgrade Lakes Region or Sebago Lakes area of southwestern Maine. You may see a few fishing boats drift by on the weekends, but during the week you may feel as if you have the lake to yourself. Most of the cottage interior is finished in knotty pine or wood paneling and carpeted.

Just over 3 hours north of Boston, MA, an hour from Augusta and Bangor (major airport), and approximately 20 minutes off the Maine Turnpike/Route 95 exit 150 (Pittsfield/Hartland), this cottage is easy to access via a private road.

This private cottage is very close to the waters edge, sits on 2.5 level wooded acres and is ideal for families, including Grandma and Grandpa along for the memories! It has everything you need to unwind, recharge your batteries and get away from it all.

The western and southerly-facing shoreline wraps around a point into a peaceful, small cove idea for swimming, with lots of sun on the beach, deck, or in the hammock, with beautiful views and sunsets off the front deck or by the camp fire pit while roasting S'mores and listening to the loons. The sandy beach is gradual and shallow enough for wading and for supervised children to enjoy, yet further out, the protected cove is plenty deep for swimming or a boat. The sheltered cove warms up faster than the open water of the main lake.

The cottage and shore front have awesome views of the lake. Four large sliding glass doors wrap around the front and side of the cottage flooding the kitchen, dining and main living areas with sunlight and panoramic views of the lake and its central islands.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all cooking and eating utensils, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, electric can opener, electric stove, microwave, etc. for your home-cooked meals. The kitchen window over the sink looks out over the beach and cove.

The dining area just across the kitchen breakfast bar is surrounded by the sliding glass doors and has a country-style wooden table with seating for six.

The dining and main living areas have an open-beamed cathedral ceiling with a remote controlled ceiling fan and overhead dimmable lights, sofa, rocking recliner chair, a (somewhat) smart TV, DVD player, and a wood stove for ambiance or taking the edge off any cool early or late-season nights. Your complete comfort and relaxation is assured.

We now have high-speed Wi-Fi and a new 10,000 btu window A/C unit in the main room to help take the edge off of those hot July and August afternoons, before the cool evening breezes off of the lake take over. There also is a new gable exhaust fan.

The bedroom has a comfortable double bed with a large picture window looking out over the cove, dresser, rustic night stands and an alarm clock. The second bedroom has a bunk bed, night stand, dresser, and a window looking out towards the woods behind the cottage. There is a sofa in the main living room that can sleep 1 more person. Both bedrooms have a dresser, oscillating fan, nightstand(s) with lamp(s), a closet, comforters and extra blankets to stay cozy on cool nights. All pillow covers, and mattress covers are new for your comfort. The bathroom has another window facing the woods, the usual sink and toilet, a 3'X4' roomy shower with heated exhaust fan, and a storage closet. The cottage has a full-sized electric water heater to ensure plenty of hot water. The cottage interior is 700 square feet in size with plenty of space as you can see from the pictures. Four Adirondack chairs (cushions provided), a small table, and grill await you on the wrap-around deck facing the lake just outside the sliding glass doors.

Great Moose Lake is a mixed cold/warm water fishery, with excellent fishing and is even stocked with brown trout annually. Small and Large-mouth bass, white and yellow perch, and pickerel are also plentiful. Brook trout can be found in-season in the colder tributaries of the lake and in numerous nearby streams and ponds.

If you bring your own canoe, kayak, or small boat it can be safely launched, beached and tied up next to the cottage, but good fishing can be had right off the beach and the rocks in front of the cottage without the need for a boat. A public boat launch is just up the road on the lake. For sunning and swimming, the beach faces south into the sun and the cove is relatively shallow, so it tends to warm up quicker than the deeper main body of the lake out front. Great Moose Lake has one of the largest loon populations in the state. They will greet you in the morning and serenade you to sleep at night. If you're lucky, you'll see fuzzy brown loon chicks riding on their parents' backs. Bald Eagles, owls, King Fishers, and Ospreys also nest along the lake and are frequently spotted diving for fish. A beaver and muskrat frequent the cove and painted turtles sun themselves on the rocks. A Pine Marten lives near the cottage and can sometimes be seen darting by.

Great Moose Lake truly is a tranquil get-away and you probably won't want to spend much time away from the cottage, but there are numerous beautiful destinations available nearby should you desire to take advantage of day trips.

Limited groceries, a pizza place, a sandwich shop, Wright's General Store, a laundromat, and hardware are just a short drive into the quiet town of Hartland. Larger stores and a greater selection can be found in nearby Pittsfield or Newport. There is a public municipal airport in Pittsfield should you have your own plane and wish to fly in.

Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park, and the charming historic coastal towns of Belfast, Camden, Rockland, Searsport, Eastport, and Lubec all make for excellent day trips. Other nearby activities available in the area include: quaint restaurants; several golf courses; a microbrewery (Bryant's) right on the lake; shopping; wilderness, hunting and fishing guide services; early-season white water rafting; hiking; exploring; camping; wildlife photography opportunities, etc. As far as outdoor activities are concerned, you name it and you can find it, but you may find that the peacefulness and serenity of the cottage and lake are all you need.

Low-key getaway on Great Moose Lake

Our two-week stay at Cove Point was just what we wanted from a lake vacation in Maine. The cottage is close to the water's edge and feels secluded. We had time on the water in the canoe, some fishing, lots of reading and watching the moods of the water and sky from the chairs on the deck, and some star-gazing when the weather and clouds finally cleared. On the days that were windy and cool we drove northward for some great hikes (Pleasant Pond Mountain, Great Moose Mountain and Pond, Round Top Trail, and, our favorite, Moxie Bald Mountain). Listening to the loons' calls -- the quintessential sound of northern lakes -- reinforced our fondness for this neck of the woods.

Peaceful Maine retreat

Cottage was very homey, owner thought of everything we could possibly need. Husband and 16yo were happy kayaking and fishing, 14yo was happy hanging out in the cove with me. Very nice location, beautiful sunsets, great weather and we always had a nice breeze from the lake. Perfect place to relax and unplug.

Beautiful Spot!

Lovely camp with wonderful sunsets! Quiet cove with many loon sightings. The camp had everything we needed to spend the week - fully equipped kitchen and living area. The screen doors allowed good flow of air on hotter days. The deck is a lovely place to spend the afternoon!

Perfect Every Time

We’ve spent four vacations here (twice in the fall, twice in the summer). The cabin feels like home the instant we arrive. There’s plenty to do right on sight including fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sitting around the fire, and more. The owner Steve is great and makes our stay a breeze every time. If you want to experience the true beauty of Maine while maintaining the comforts of home, look no further!

Just the water and nature- perfect

Thanks for another wonderful year. All week we enjoyed the animals going about their business all around us. This time of year it is so peaceful and quiet on the lake. We visited Ledge Island this year and the bog on the other side of the lake. The camp was nice and clean as always.

Great relaxing week on the lake!

We had another wonderful week at Cove Point camp. This year it wasn't as windy so we were able to have a fire in the evenings. The sunsets are wonderful, and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the turtles sun themselves in the morning. The blue heron returned again and we saw either an osprey or young eagle catch a fish in the lake. Canoeing around the lake was great fun. Thanks Steve for another perfect getaway.

Our favorite vacation spot!

This was our third stay at Cove Point cottage. The owner, Steve, has always been a pleasure to deal with and he has always checked in during our stay to make sure everything is in perfect shape. Upon arrival, the cottage was spotless. It feels like home each time we visit. This was our first summer stay and we spent most of the week fishing, kayaking, canoeing in the provided canoe, swimming (just the kids!), relaxing on the deck and building fires. The kids especially enjoyed catching bullfrogs and playing in the sand. If you're looking for a real nature's retreat with all the comforts of home, look no further! We will stay again and again.

Our stay here on Great Moose Lake was wonderfully relaxing....a great time to enjoy nature listening to the loon calls, watching a parent Flicker feeding it's young and taking in the beautiful sunsets. We also enjoyed many early morning and afternoon fishing excursions on the Lake. On a rainy day we took a day trip to Moosehead and toured the lake aboard The Katahdin. The accommodations were wonderful, clean and comfortable. Thank you for a wonderful stay on Great Moose Lake.

Great getaway!

This was such a wonderful place, lots of wildlife to just sit and watch- turtles, loons, woodpeckers, blue jays, dragonflies, herons, frogs, fish. The narrow channel directly in front of the camp keeps boats at low speed in this section of the lake, so even on busy weekends it is still peaceful and quiet. Almost all the comforts of home, full kitchen, sofa, dining table, grill, TV. Cell coverage is good (Verizon), enough to get basic internet. The cove to the side of the camp is nice and private for swimming, sitting on the beach or canoeing. Nice big sliding glass doors provide great views even from inside. Weather can change in minutes, especially in late afternoon. Nice breezes off the lake kept us cool even when temp got into the mid 80s one day. Thanks for the stay, it was very relaxing!

A Perfect Escape

I have stayed at several cottages in Maine. This is the best. The cottage is very clean and has all the utensils that you need. If you are looking for a place to relax, this is it. It has a nice sandy beach and easy in and out for kayaking. The loons called and greeted us along with beautiful sunsets. The cottage offers views of the lake on two sides. Great spot for day trips but a bit of distance for dining out. Steve has kept this camp up to date with new appliances and repairs. We caught several fish off the beach and boulders but left all the clunkers for the next guest. This was a great stay on a beautiful lake! We will do this again.

Interesting Place

I have been meaning to write a review of our family vacation last summer. We booked this location to meet up with others in the Forks for Whitewater Rafting. Also, Skowhegan was only 30 min away. Had dinner a few nights at Ken's Family Restaurant and played mini golf while eating ice cream at Gifford's. I will start by saying Steve is a great guy, thinking of every detail including the long rental agreement. We have stayed many a times in the Rangeley area never coming across a contract like that. He was pleasant to chat with and runs a nice cottage. It was a very quiet location, great for walks after dinner. If you stay during the 4th of July, there was a small boat parade in the Lake. First day we arrived, both my teen boys caught a good size Bass. Water was warm, but a bit more rocky than expected. There is a small beach area but be careful on the large boulders that are quite slippery. We wore and would recommend water shoes after a few falls. Everyday the wind kicked up on the Lake and drove us indoors. Campfires just wouldn't stay lit. We searched for wildlife, even taking the canoe out once, but, never saw much except for several turtles in the cove. The cottage itself really was quite a distance in from the main road. You should expect a 6-8 minute ride in and all dirt. Also bring mosquito spray! They were really bad after dark. Overall not a bad stay, just a bit to small for us and no dock to fish from. Didn't even think to check the listing on that. While staying, we located a lost ring and brought it to the owners attention. Steve was astonished and greatful, yet we never heard back to this day from the owners of the ring who had left a message in the guest book about it. Thats why you probably will not find a nicer guy to deal with than Steve. We thank him for the opportunity to have stayed here and hope him and the cottage the very best!

The Perfect Moment

Since the 70's, my wife and I have spent some portion of every summer in Maine. For the last 3 Augusts we have stayed at Steve's Cove Point camp where we feel we have finally found our ideal place. We go to Maine for reasons probably different from most. We don't fish or hunt; we're not boaters; we don't even like s'mores! While Cove Point certainly offers a wealth of opportunities for a unique "camp experience," we are drawn there for the serenity, peace and the sheer beauty of this captivating setting. Here we can experience "the perfect moment" where time seems to stand still. It has become a type of sanctuary for us and helps restore our spirit. Others who seek a similar opportunity will surely find it here. The location permits easy day trips to explore what Maine has to offer. The quaint charm of the coastal towns like Belfast or the grandeur of Moosehead Lake or the scenic Kennebec River valley are within easy reach. Yet returning back to Cover Point is always most gratifying. Steve is without a doubt the best owner we have ever experienced. His attention to detail and the needs of his guests is exceptionable. He is truly concerned that our stay is outstanding and goes above and beyond to guarantee that. His love of Cove Point is always obvious and he instills that same feeling in us. It is hard to leave Cove Point; we always look forward to our return. Thanks Steve for sharing your bonnie, bonnie place with us!

Truly Relaxing & Beautiful

Can't say enough about our stay at this beautiful lake. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished. We enjoyed the beautiful weather, cool nights and warm days. The lake was beautiful for swimming, canoeing, and just relaxing watching the sun go down. We had a terrific time & can't wait for another chance to come stay at your cabin! Thanks so much for your warm hospitality in making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our week!

About the host

Host profile image
I earned a degree in wildlife biology from the University of Maine at Orono in the 1980s, explored around the state and made some life-long friendships. I had to move back home to the Pennsylvania area after college where I still live most of the year. I worked in the environmental firld for 34 years. I have always enjoyed the out doors. I particularly enjoy golfing, hiking, skiing, fishing, canoeing, and just plain being outside. New England and Maine in particular have always been some of my favorite year-round destinations. The times I've spent on the lakes of Maine with my siblings, parents, children, extended family and friends are some of my best memories. 'Down time' off the grid, in the woods, at the lake is priceless and helps me keep things in perspective. The most important things in my life are health, happiness, friends, a good spiritual life, and my grown children whom I never get to spend enough time with.

Why they chose this property

I imagined having a lakefront get-away ever since our family summer vacations on Thompson Lake near Otisfield, ME in the late 1970s and 80s. After searching throughout New England for years, I was drawn back to Maine for several reasons, namely it's unique character, the people, solitude, old friends, and a persistent longing to get back to The North Woods. While in college in the 1970s I spent some time (in the dead of winter) on Great Moose Lake with a friend who owns property on the eastern shore. After a lot of looking and research, I decided to take a closer look here and I found this cottage on the southern shore of the lake and everything fell into place. The location had me from first sight. My family, friends and I spend as much time as possible at the cottage.
Great Moose Lake is remote enough to provide the tranquility I look for, yet it's easy to get to and I am close enough to old friends that I can always get out to see them or have them come visit. The cottage has enough room for a few visitors. It is also within a day trip to Baxter State Park for camping and hiking, the Maine Coast for sight-seeing, shopping and dining, or the western mountains for more hiking or canoeing.. Maine is a different place and a road less traveled, and there are lots of year-round things to do here....or you can just do nothing in this beautiful place.

What makes this property unique

The large amount of waterfront, the southwestern exposure, the nice little beach, secluded cove and the cottage's closness to the water are what make this property unique. The lake is not overly developed like many other Maine lakes. The previous owners had it for almost 30 years. I enjoy working on the cottage and property to make it better for everyone, paddling and fishing around the lake's coves and islands, and having friends, family visit this special place. It's a good place to recharge my batteries here and get away from the rat race. Sometimes it takes a day or two to get used to the solitude at the cottage and then it can be difficuIt to leave after some time there. The cottage is comfortable with modern conveniences and you won't be "roughing it" while staying here. I find the lake and the call of the loons soothing. Sharing this beautiful place with other families brings smiles to everyone. I think you will enjoy it.
