Great(if you like flies all over bed and bathroom and.....more)

This place is great if you like flies all over in the bedroom and bathroom! And if you don't want any control over the heat from room to room, and if you want to pay more cleaning fee and service fee, other than that, well you get the idea......

Exactly what we needed

My family stayed here for the long weekend around the 4th of July. The yard was amazing and we had plenty of space. The house was mostly clean - lots of dead bugs in the corners though. The house is advertised to be cool in the summer because it's brick, but in reality it was difficult to stay cool at night because the windows downstairs won't open and the ones upstairs only do if you push extremely hard, and they were covered in dead bugs. We appreciated that linens were included and that there were fans in every room. I don't know if we'd ever stay here again but we certainly don't regret booking this location.

Great house but poorly managed & maintained

I booked this house for the long weekend of President's day for a total of 12 adults. On the listing, the owner indicated that the house sleeps 12 - he also had a bed breakdown - but once I booked it, he told me that there are beds only for 10 people and he will provide two air mattresses and bedding. I pointed that on the listing he indicates 12 and explains how many beds each room has and he said "this is the first time this has been brought to his attention". I requested, since the air mattress is not as comfortable as the bed to have a late check out. I never got a response. A few hours before our arrival he emailed me saying that the dish washer is not working and expressed his appologies. We arrived at the property on Friday night (Sat morning) at 2:30am, after a 5 hour drive from NY and discovered that there were no air mattresses in the house. Also, the heating was off and the temperature outside was 15F. I immediately started calling, texting and leaving voice mails on his phone. He showed up at 5:15am, we had a intense conversation and we requested to refund us the first nights fee as the house was not prepared to sleep 12 people, it was freezing cold and we were all awake waiting for him. He responded saying that he saw 3 people sleeping sited on the sofa, so we already had a solution for the night (!) and then he suggested that if we don't like it, he can return all the amount in cash and we should leave the house immediately (to note that it was 5:30am). He brought an air mattress and a spring mattress, placed them on the floor and brought sheets and small blankets for the people to cover. We ended up going to sleep at 6:30am realising that the sheets on the beds were not clean. The next morning, under the sun's light we saw the condition the house was. Toilets with urine stains, dead flies in the bathroom and mice droppings at the window sill of the foyer. Also, the air mattress had a hole, so my friend basically slept on the floor. After missing a day of skiing and doing the basic household for hygiene purposes, we tried to enjoy the house as much as possible. Its in a great location and has amazing potential, but it was not in a state to accommodate people. The last day, on our way out, we waited for Donald (the owner) to have a second round of discussion and request a full refund for the first night. He refunded only 25%.

Great weekend stay

We very much enjoyed our stay in Central Vermont. Owner was attentive and easy to get in touch with. House was clean and well appointed. The Great room is really cool but could use so more comfortable furniture for hanging out.

Lovely historic, well preserved home right near Lake Dunmore.

This is a beautiful, well cared for home with all the amenities: well stocked kitchen, nice bathrooms, good linens, beautiful back yard, etc. Donald was very accommodating and easy to work with - answered any questions we had during our stay right away. Great spot to stay for Lake Dunmore activities or a visit to Middlebury (only 20 minute drive).

Perfect for a "reunion" of "friends"

"Far Enough" was the perfect spot for a much-anticipated and compulsively organized get-together of now middle-aged former junior-year-abroad classmates (we bonded big-time during a life-altering year together in the South of France, in the Go-Go 80's, totally and for sure). The house was big enough to lodge the seven of us very comfortably, with a variety of options for sleeping arrangements and three full baths. The kitchen was spacious and fully functional and the dining table plenty big enough to accommodate all seven of us. The house is in excellent repair, newly renovated but not overly so-- i.e. still a little funky (in a good way) and undeniably charming. Perhaps best of all, it was completely private and perfectly quiet (one friend said she got the best nights' sleep she had had in years). We gathered on the columned porch for cocktail hour (rosé from our beloved Provence, of course), grilled steaks and chicken in the backyard, and had late-night soul-baring conversations in the baronial living room with the coffered ceiling and grand staircase. Just a quick little drive down to Bristol for fresh-baked croissants from Gourmet Provence first thing in the morning and a fabulous last-night dinner at Café Provence. And great antique/art gallery shopping in both Bristol and Middlebury. To top it all off, Donald was so easy and pleasant to work with-- the entire process was a breeze. We would love to do it all again! Highly recommended!

My ancestors established a farm in Vermont during the 1700's. I visited relatives in this area and estate as a child. I vowed as an 8 year old that one day I would return and not leave. I spent 20 years traveling the continents with that promise in mind. My love with Lake Dunmore and the surrounding mountains has never waned. I have now been in Middlebury Vermont for over 20 years and there is no other place on earth that has captured my soul as this has.

Why they chose this property

Far Enough is an estate built by one of Vermont's industrial founding fathers, Royal Blake. It is surrounded by the history of a bygone era. The iron foundry built by this original owner still stands in the forest across the street, a 3 minute walk. It echoes a semblance of the majestic Mayan Ruin, Tikal, in Guatemala. In the early 1800's over 200 people were employed by the "Ironmaster" Royal Blake. The home he built is a reflection of a time when great wealth was possible from the raw land. Those times petered out but fortunately this beautiful historic home has locked this nostalgia within it's 3 foot thick stone walls . Huge rooms, high ceilings, quarter sawn oak paneling, on a rolling estate are just a few features of this property.
When my son discovered this property on the market I could hardly believe it. Little did he know, that as a child I had played in the apple orchid behind this mansion while my mom visited friends that lived up the road. Nearly 50 years passed; fate has led us to become curators of this property.

What makes this property unique

The enormous hand cut stones that make up this home are it's most captivating feature. It is almost unfathomable that these rocks were quarried and placed at a time when technology was levers and pulleys. Vermont at the turn of the 18th century was a wild place; its' gifts were raw and its' consequences unforgiving. There was a family that worked with what they found here and not only survived but proliferated and left this legacy.
The Blake Foundry Home offer a comfortable and charming setting where one can appreciate these old world gifts.
Discovery awaits at your door with the modern world at your fingertips. A beautiful mountain river with private swimming hole is across the street. Hiking, to the cliffs of Mt Horrid is only 10 minutes away on the long trail at Brandon Gap. Brandon Gap Backcountry Recreation Area hots four separate ski zones. Neshobe Golf Course is 5 minutes down he road on your way to Brandon. Brandon hosts many fine restaurants (Cafe Provence, River Pub and Grill, etc) Foley's Brewery and Ripton Mountain Distillery.
Skiing at Killington and Middlebury College Snow bowl are nearby. Lake Dunmore, Silver Lake and Moosalamoo National Recreation are just minutes away..
