About this property

Boathouse Cottage. Private Beach. Sunset, Mountain, Lake Views. Near Acadia NP!

The best of Maine's historic shoreline and woodland cottages! Near Acadia National Park!

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the owner prior to booking.

The fully maintained and newly renovated, mint condition 1920's Boathouse cottage is unique and has extensive beach, sunset, lake and mountain views from either the screen in porch or from the 10ft x 7ft picture window. The Cottage is just a few steps from a 250 yard long beach with fresh clear spring fed lake water and gradual sandy bottom swimming.

The Boathouse can also have an "add on" nearby one-room cabin made available. This cabin is separate, with private bathroom, outdoor shower, grill, basic cooking, coffee, fridge, deck, and a queen bunkbed. Please inquiry if interested. Owner can add it onto this rental prior to booking via VRBO.

My Maine property is a private 300-acre peninsula with a mile-long private gated driveway through some of Maine's last stand of old growth Hemlocks that then splits off to each of 4 private cabins. I have been renting the cabins to vetted families and couples since 1997 through online services such as VRBO. Each rental has privacy, separate parking, natural and unobstructed views of the lake, beach and mountains. Our completely private 250 yard long beach is the center piece. The Boathouse (google “VRBO 4017223ha”) and Three Bears Cottage (google “VRBO 102873ha”) are located on the south end of the beach and are separated by 25 yards. The Shadow Cabin (Google “VRBO 102874ha”) and the other cabin, not advertised, are located on the north end of the beach and are separated by 50 yards.

The property is large and I limit the number of people on the property at one time so that the general serenity of the property can be fully experienced by all without any worry about noise, beach use, shared amenities, and general privacy. There is a caretaker who will be there on the day of arrival, Wednesday for trash and assistance, and is on call for emergencies and to maintain the safety, sanitation, and operation of the property for you. The lake and surrounding area have abundant loons and their haunting calls can be heard day and night. They are a daily visitor to our private cove along with duck families, turtles, and bald eagles. The lake is superb for swimming and is completely spring fed so the water is crystal clear, fresh, and enjoyable. The water temperatures are very comfortable during the summer months and can be enjoyed for hours. Our large private beach offers a soft, clean (non-muck), sandy, gradual entrance into the water. We have a wooden floating raft that is perfect to fish from, swim or paddle to and from, as well as relax on while watching the schools of fish swim by. Our property is surrounded by a State of Maine land reserve (Donnell Pond Unit) that is an extension of Acadia National Park. There is fantastic hiking and exploring all within just a few minutes’ drive or locally a short walk or paddle, all of which has views over thousands of acres of protected land, Acadia National Park, seacoast, islands, lakes, mountains, and our property. We offer for our guests 5 one-man kayaks, 1 two-man kayak, 3 paddle boards, 5 kid kayaks, and a canoe to explore the lake, its remote beaches, the outlets, beaver dams, eagle nests, and fishing. The lake is 75% undeveloped/State owned so you can enjoy the completely secluded natural beaches and shores without worry. The entire property is in its natural state and could be physically challenging.

We do allow for an authorized dog(s) with the understanding that it is not allowed onto furniture, be destructive to the property, be overly bothersome, or be left unattended without being properly secured or crated. It is, however, a fantastic place for a dog especially for one that loves the water, beach, woods, hiking, and general free play. There is a $100 per dog fee. There will be other dogs on the property. Most return every year and are known and have been respectful. Please understand that dogs are often playing on the beach off-leash.

Beautiful and peaceful. This was the perfect place to stay for us to enjoy the beauty of the area but be able to get away from some of the crowds. The property was beautifully maintained and the lake goes on forever - great kayaking ! Couldn’t ask for more !

Peaceful and Quiet

Very clean and comfortable cabin with everything we needed for 4 days. The lake was crystal clear and refreshing. Fantastic hiking within 2 miles. Canadian border 80 minutes away and a beautiful State Park in Lubec Maine. Lots of reading and cribbage especially in the middle of hurricane Lee. Loved our 4 day getaway

Fall in Maine

We had a great time! Cabin was spotless and well appointed. Many toys to enjoy…canoe, kayaks. A rare private beach with our own chairs and hammocks. We used this for our base for exploring the “Down east Maine coast. Great quiet retreat with WiFi… If you want to get away here’s your place. Close to Ellsville and cute downtown.

Beautiful Getaway Property, remote but "close enough"

Just the type of spot we look for: -- Rustic but very clean -- No TV and passable internet if you can't tune out (likely not strong or reliable enough for streaming) -- Beautiful property and views (we were there late in the season so didn't swim) -- Many great hikes nearby -- One-half hour +/- from everything crowded. Close enough to go (Acadia, towns with restaurants, etc.), but far enough away to get away. --- Restaurant recommendations were really good -- not tourist joints -- don't miss Perry's for lobster right from the sea We are working to arrange renting the whole property with friends next year. A true Maine experience.

Heaven On Earth

From the moment my family and I arrived on this property and all through the week, I repeatedly found myself saying “this is heaven on earth.” The cabin we stayed in was beautiful, nicely appointed and immaculately clean. The beach is a true beach and at times, since it was a bit windy for the last few days of our stay, it was as if we were staying along the ocean coast. The water in the lake is so clear and clean it is amazing. We took many hikes and bike rides, and the owner (Andrew) could not have been more accommodating or easier to get in touch with. This location will most definitely be on our “must return” list next year, and likely for many more years to come!!

Hidden Gem

I had the BEST time! The boathouse was very nicely decorated, had lots of amenities and was very clean. The lake and it's beach were the perfect spot to relax after a day of hiking. The location was great too - felt secluded but also close to nearby hiking and Acadia. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Serene views, abundant wildlife, and beautiful cabin!

First, my lack of eloquent style of writing will not do the description of this property or our vacation justice. All 5 of us agree this was one of the best vacations we've taken. First, we were truly able to disconnect from it all. It gave us and our 3 children a new appreciation for putting electronics on hold and focusing on each other. I was pretty nervous about this, but there is so much to do we didn't notice. Each day there was a new adventure. We kayaked, fished, swam, played board games, hiked, mountain biked, visited Acadia and Bar Harbor, played corn hole and paddle boarded to name a few. Before the kids woke each morning my husband and I had coffee, talked, and read on the screened-in porch while enjoying the beautiful view. Some afternoons we relaxed in one of the several hammocks near the water. We really appreciated the fact that the dogs also enjoyed themselves and were exhausted each evening. It is definitely worth mentioning how kind and attentive the property owner was during our stay. The outdoor grill stopped working and he went out immediately and purchased a new grill for our cabin! At present we have not taken our deposit back because we are looking to return next year, same week and same cabin! Thank you Andrew!

Perfect Maine retreat

My children say that I believe I must have two weeks by a lake in Maine to be who I am. This rental provides exactly what I need. We have stayed in all three of the rental cabins on Spring River Lake, and we love each of them. The last three years we've been in the Boat House which is beautiful, comfortable - an excellent accommodation. The big window in the living room provides a view of the lake in all weathers and times of day and is a perfect place to settle in with a good book. We ate every meal on the screened in porch and did our reading there during the day. The kitchen is reasonably equipped and everything is kept in good working order. We have friends who have rented the nearest camp for one of our weeks for the last two years and have really enjoyed that. The fact that we can bring our dog makes this a wonderful place for us. The owner is responsible, responsive, very respectful of the renters' privacy when he's there. The private beach is wonderful with beautiful sunset views. Nearby hiking trails, short drives to ocean, places to eat. Highly recommended.

Relax and Play

Simply a beautiful location and excellent accommodations -- a beautiful strip of lakeside Maine property at the north edge of Acadia National Park. My wife's family, her sister's family, and their 40-year-ago childhood friends (and parts of their respective families) enjoyed a fabulous week here in mid-July 2016. We actually rented all three of the cabins on this private cove on Spring River Lake, and we had that whole end of the lake to ourselves. And we had a ball. The lake was a beautiful, clear-water, rough-sand beach setting, with plenty of "toys" available such as kayaks, canoes, a floaty raft, and beach chairs/umbrellas. On one day we all paddled over to the opposite end of the lake and played on the "jumping rock"; but on most days we just chilled and chatted and splashed in the gently sloping water in our own private cove! The drive to Acadia isn't much longer than the drive to the grocery store -- what a beautiful area of the country. The cabins were well-designed and reasonably appointed. Some of the dishes/dinnerware could stand to be updated, but everything was clean and generally had everything we needed. The general feel was "rustic" more than "elegant" but this is exactly what we were after. The local hiking (esp. Tunk Mountain) was fabulous. The cabin owner was generous with contributing his 'local knowledge' of the lake, cabins, and surrounding community/history with us. Communication was flawless before, during, and after the rental and was in no way overbearing. Response time to phone calls or emails was always within 24 hours. The information binders provided at the cabins were well-written and helpful. We did have a few problems with ants in one of the cabins, but we brought this up to the caretaker and he addressed it promptly and effectively. Also, while we were lucky to be enjoying all three cabins together this week, I imagine some of the pure bliss might have been lost if we didn't have the whole cove to ourselves. But the cabins are very nicely spaced, at least 100 yards apart, so I don't think this would have greatly diminished the charm of the site. We had a great week at these lovely lakeside cabins, and will cherish the family/friend togetherness it fostered for years to come. We strongly recommend them to others.

Paradise

This year we stayed in the Boathouse on Spring River Lake after staying last summer in the Log Cabin. It was everything we were told and more! The Boathouse is a wonderful private cottage nestled in the woods on the shore of the beach of the lake. It has a large open space with the kitchen and a large living room separated with a beautiful stone fireplace. The sunlight filters into the area through a e custom built window bigger than a boat! We spent our days hiking on the local mountain trails, canoeing and kayaking in the lake and watching the sunset on the beach. Every evening we cooked on the grill or boiled up lobsters in the kitchen for dinner on the large screened in porch. This cottage is quiet, and private which allowed us to reconnect with nature and ourselves.

About the host

Host profile image
The property and the surrounding area are very dear to me. We donated thousands of acres to the State of Maine for a Maine State Land Reserve which is now enjoyed and respected by enthusiastic visitors. We work hard to keep our remaining private peninsula pristine and in complete respect to the natural beauty of the area. I grew up in the Bangor and Downeast area and have a strong connection to the Acadia region. We have two other advertised rentals on the same 300 acres; (google: "VRBO 102873ha", "VRBO 102874ha", and "VRBO 4017223ha" ). There is plenty of privacy. We have been renting and maintaining this beautiful property for 30+ years. Please feel free to look at our rentals and view our instagram (@ MaineCabinRentals) or Youtube (@ mainebestcabins774) for a feel of the property experience.

Why they chose this property

In 1994 we gifted 7500 acres of the property to the State of Maine for a preserved land reserve. We kept the 300 acre peninsula where now three rental cabins are located. The surrounding area is an undiscovered wilderness. The hiking is incredible with tremendous views of Downeast Maine and Acadia National Park. There are many remote lakes and ponds snuggled in the hills that provide total privacy. In addition, Acadia National Park is only a short drive away and can easily be visited for a day or afternoon. Our lake and the other surrounding lakes, ponds, and mountains are minimally developed if developed at all. Directly in front of the Boathouse is a 1000-foot soft sandy beach with beautiful swimming. Additionally our peninsula has several private beaches within a couple minutes walking distance or short kayak paddle. There is a mile long gated private driveway, allowing for considerable privacy. The large private property has VRBO listings (gogle: "VRBO 102873ha", "VRBO 102874ha", and "VRBO 4017223ha" ). Two proximal reserves have been designated here: 1,940 acres east of Donnell Pond and 4,274 acres northeast of our lake. The mountains and lakes formed by the Tunk Mountain Pluton constitute one of the most distinctive landmarks of the East Coastal Region. The two reserves include mid-elevation (~1,200 foot) summits of Tunk Mountain, Black Mountain, and Caribou Mountain as well as Tilden Pond, and Little Long Pond. What makes this property unique

Few if any completely private fresh water beaches exist like this in New England, especially with such easy access to Acadia National Park, the Maine shoreline and lobster shacks, hikes in the coastal mountains, and other immediate natural adventures.
