The heritage home has good bones with large kitchen and livingroom. The half bathroom downstairs had clean porcelain but woodwork was not. Kitchen cupboards had the essentials but were in disrepair. Working appliances but shelves missing or broken in the fridge. The rain brought out large ants everywhere! Good wifi connection and TV . Walkway up to house had uneven stonework that could have been unsafe. We decided to not let these issues wreck our week and did enjoy the area.

Beautiful, rustic getaway with lots of personality
Charming and beautiful property, surrounded by matured trees and gorgeous landscapes. The grounds are well maintained and there were hardly any mosquitoes.
The lovely crabapple trees at the front of the house is like a bonus feature.
The bedrooms are very spacious and sound doesn’t easily carry between room. One can tell Cathy made a tremendous effort to make sure the themes between the bedrooms rooms flowed harmoniously.
The little ones had fun hunting frogs and swimming in the lake during the day… then enjoying s’mores over a bonfire in the evening.
The neighbours are all very friendly. Max, whom we started referring to as the neighbourhood mascot (a beautiful black cat) always paid the girls a visit during the day. This was an added bonus to our stay
Keep in mind that the allure of this property is its rustic beauty (with a few modern upgrades like the TV and internet) and charm.
If you’re looking for something entirely modern… then this isn’t the place for you. The property is gem, hidden away from onlookers but also close enough to the city (downtown Bracebridge is only a 15 minutes drive away). We all enjoyed our stay and plan on returning again.

So so.
impossible to communicate with the owner..
old furniture, not really clean, bbq grill too dirty and not working.
mattress too old.. got back pain after 2 day sleeping. sofa too soggy. booked for 5days but back home at 4th days
Great location in muskoka, which is the only reason it got a 2/5 stars from us. No communication on how to get into the property. Luckily the cleaning lady was still there to let us in. The walk way to cottage is dangerous for my aging in-laws and child. Loose stones balanced on others and dark at night time. Contacted owner regarding the hornets nest infestation in the rotting porch roof (received no reply). After 3 ppl got stung drove 15 minutes to Bracebridge to buy wasp killer. Only to return back to cook supper on the BBQ on the ad. To which we discovered it was rotten and unusable. Back into Bracebridge we went for pizza, as the oven was so dirty I couldn’t imagine even trying to start it. Gross. Overall, property severally neglected. Contacted owner numerous times and she remained silent. My in-laws ended up purchasing a camp bbq from Canadian tire so we can eat. The shower mat was full of mold and other questionable things and toilet brushes were rusted.
The location of the cottage was fantastic though. But would never rent this property again or refer it to someone. Took pictures of all the things that are left unanswered by the owner.
Posted pictures of this cottage are not representative of it's current condition. The disappointment started upon arriving to see a completely overgrown and an unkept yard of weeds, bushes and trees. The walk-way up to the cottage is dangerous with loose stones and uneven surfaces. At this point the cottage looked abandoned. Entering the cottage we were greeted with a heavy scent of disinfectant from the recently mopped floors, still soaking wet. It turned out that the floors were the only (assumed) clean thing in the place. The cottage is filthy and in disrepair. Finger prints around every light switch, walls and ceiling covered with something that exploded, like a can of coke, and the top of the fridge has never been cleaned, ever. Cupboard doors are falling off and most of the cooking utensils are extremely worn and questionable to be used. The BBQ was a disaster. You could not, would not want to eat anything that came off the grill. The bathrooms were also unsanitary, we wore our flipflops in the shower. The toilets are the smallest I've ever seen, they must be for children. All bedrooms were dusty and beds were perfect for a rough nights sleep. Extremely uncomfortable.
Bottom line, stay clear of this property!
Lovely old house with lots of character, space for everyone and tons of natural light. Lovely property close to Port Carling and Huckleberry Rock. Cathy was a considerate and responsive host and our family enjoyed an excellent March Break getaway here!
Historic but tired cottage in very poor condition & uncleanliness; not as described in listing.
We were disappointed in the poor state of repair and cleanliness for this old, run-down cottage. In summary: stone steps were dangerously unstable, chipped and peeling paint, cottage was dirty and not clean (floors, porch, furniture, mould in fridge). Advertised BBQ not working.. Oven disgustingly dirty as were pans to use in over: black from previous use. Would never use! Poor instructions re TV and never able to get TV working. Internet: no clear instructions on how to sign on & which signal was for this cottage. Electrical cover plates missing, some lamps dangerously unsafe. Very disappointed with poor condition and cleanliness. Old worn-out towels for bath (thankfully we brought our own as we also did for bedsheets). Not what we expected when it was advertised as "recently renovated" and we left day early. We certainly did not enjoy our stay and would never recommend it. Our experience significantly reduced our opinion of VRBO as a source of reliable, accurately described rentals.
We were in the area for a family wedding and the location was fantastic. The cottage is lovely, but needs some TLC desperately nd the cleanliness needs improvement. The property manager was great to drop stuff off when we asked, but we did expect a bit more for a Muskoka cottage rental. The cottage does sleep 8 but we had to pull chairs from other rooms to actually all be able to eat together as there are not 8 dining chairs for the table. The exterior is beautiful and we had a great weekend but we would probably stay elsewhere next time unless significant improvements were made to the cottage.

Perfect Holiday house for Christmas
We had an amazing Christmas at this beautiful house.
This home gave our family the opportunity to create cherished memories.
Cathy was an amazing host. She was very quick to respond but we found that the house was so well stocked we barely needed to bother her.
The kitchen was very well stocked for a cottage.
The cottage was clean as well as bedding a linens. There were extra blankets in many of the closets.
The temperatures very cold during our stay but the house was so warm and cozy inside.
The property is well maintained. It is a true cottage experience.
The best part was Cathy she was so warm, helpful and friendly.
Thanks for a very memorable Christmas.

Lovely spot but needs some work to be comfortable
The kitchen is not well stocked with pots and pans or other utensils. No matches for the fireplace or firewood, broken lock/doorknob on the main floor bathroom. Various light switches that we couldn’t figure out and a furnace that barely kept up with the very cold weather. Very little extra bedding and none supplied for the sofa bed. I think this place has lots of potential and is really charming but needs to be better equipped before being rented, particularly for 8 people. It’s a beautiful home that needs a bit more attention to make it comfortable. Great location though.

Everything I expected and more
A truely great find for us. After much research, I found Kathy and the Rustic Cottage as our location to stay while we spent time in Canada for our annual Father-Sons golf trip. The location - right in the heart of the Muskoka District was perfect. It had everything we needed and Kathy was great. If ever in the area again, this will be my first choice!!

Great weekend!
We had a fantastic time at the cottage. There was a ton of space and it was clean and well equipped. The trails close by were easy to get to and provided a beautiful view of the lake, even though we got stuck in a rain storm!
Thanks again!

Lovely cottage
We stayed at the property early August of 2016. We found it to be an extremely clean and well maintained cottage. It was very cozy and we never wanted to leave. Catharine was quick to address our needs. We cannot wait to return.

Cozy
Nice quite property. Too many ants for my liking but then again i am a city person. Also the website said two full bathrooms and it's only 1 1/2 if I knew that it would have been a deal breaker. Owner is an amazing person very helpful and attentive to your needs with a quick response to all questions.

"Elegant" rustic charm!!!
The Owner was lovely to deal with from minute one: helpful and very enthusiastic about the area. She helped us organize equipment for our 2 year old twins. Cribs, playpens etc where all high quality and brand new.
House was listed as rustic but think more House and Home rustic. Decor was stylish and elegant. House was large and spread out. Towels, sheets and duvets all smelled so fresh and clean. Bedrooms were simple but immaculate. Our mattress was incredible.
We liked being near Bracebridge but discovered Port Carling to be closer with LCBO, cafes, etc. Beautiful outdoor scenery but not too remote which we liked. Amenities within 10 min drive. Satellite TV and strong wifi a plus.

About the host
Hosted by Owner/ Manager
My name is Catharine Thompson. I am originally from Muskoka. I am a very busy mother of three wonderful children. I own a busy babysitting/nanny service in the area
Why they chose this property
We purchased this property because we absolutely fell in love with it and the village it is nestled in. We owned the property next door and admired it for some time. We were lucky enough that when it came on the market we were able to buy it. We have not regretted the purchase for one minute.
What makes this property unique
We loved that it is close to the town of Bracebridge and Port Carling. The people in the neighborhood are super friendly. It backs onto the incredibly amazing Huckleberry rock hiking trails. It is also a super short walk to a beautiful lake Muskoka beach. We love that it is across the road from a very affordable golf course. The house itself is super cozy and made us feel like we were home from the moment we walked in the door. I love the old charm of the house. It is a historical home in the area.
