About this property

18th Century Home with Captivating Charm in Historic Centre of Town

An elegant and comfortable 18th century home in Modica’s historic centre, newly renovated by a Florentine architect. It combines brand new amenities, WI-FI, smart TV, A/C, and contemporary style, with historic character. Nestled in a charming, residential neighbourhood, it's steps from Modica’s lively cafes, restaurants, and stunning Baroque architecture.

This 90 sq m palazetto features original stone floors, domed ceilings and sandstone archways, alongside air conditioning, all-new, contemporary furniture, and marble kitchen counters. Enjoy coffee on the balcony with a view of Modica’s historic castello, or relax with a glass of Sicilian wine in your private interior terrace. Ideal for up to 5 people.

Modica offers urban amenities and relaxed charm. It also makes a great base to explore southeastern Sicily, including UNESCO world heritage sites, Blue Flag beaches, hiking trails and nearby gorges, and Greek and Roman ruins.

About Modica: Modica is a UNESCO World Heritage site, in recognition of its 'Sicilian Baroque' architecture. It is also famous for its distinctive--and delicious--artisanal chocolate. The historic centre includes restaurants and cafes, as well as live music, theatre, and, during the summer months, you can enjoy movies and performances under the stars. The historic centre is compact, and easily managed on foot. We think it's a lively and entertaining place, but still relaxed, casual, and quiet.

About Southeastern Sicily: Convenient day trips (by car, train, or bus) include historic, cosmopolitan, and beautiful Siracusa, Caltagirone (famous for its ceramics) and UNESCO-protected Baroque splendour of cities such as Noto, Scicli, and Ragusa. Nature lovers will enjoy the delights of nearby beaches, (such as Pozallo, Sampieri, and Donnalucata) or hiking in scenic gorges.

Discover ruins of classical antiquity and early Christian history at nearby sites such as Akrai, or the Roman mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale.

Wine lovers will enjoy sampling the local Nero D'Avola, Frappato, Grillo, and Cerasuolo wines, or perhaps enjoying a tour of a nearby vineyard.

Stone home heart of medieval Modica

My wife and I enjoyed our month long stay. Perfect location for us, and we loved Modica and it's surroundings. There's no shortage of thing do do and see. The history is unparalleled, the food is to die for, and there's always the Mediterranean... That said, be sure it's what your looking for, there's many stairs, the driving and parking can be a real challenge, especially in the medieval centers. For us though, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Perfect location in Modica

The apartment was spacious with a well-equipped kitchen. Beds were comfortable and cross-draft from balcony to inner patio was welcome on hot afternoons. Location in the old town is amazing - walking distance to shops and all the great architecture. Owner and property manager very responsive. Loved this place.

Wonderful stay at La Margherita!

We spent an amazing 5 nights at La Margherita. The house is very comfortable and well appointed. It's an easy 5 or 10 minute walk to the centre of town with plenty of great restaurants and shops. There's a small grocery store and a fresh fruit and vegetable stall very close by. The owner provided a binder with lots of recommendations and information about the area and places to see. I would recommend staying at La Margherita to anyone.

Great location, perfect apartment

The apartment was in a perfect location. We could always find parking within a 5 minute walk; restaurants, bars and shops were within a 15 minute walk, yet it was very local with pleasant neighbours. Would love to stay here again.

A magical space in a charming town

We would highly recommend booking La Margherita for your next vacation. The architecture is stunning and every room was clean, very functional and comfortable. Modica is a beautiful charming town and we loved the sites, food, wine, the history and the people. Giorgio met us at the agreed upon location with no issues. He was very friendly, down to earth and helpful with any questions we had. From our base here we took many day trips. Some of our highlights were: Valley of the Temples in Arigento. Giorgio arranged for us to visit a farm in Val Di Noto where we enjoyed a 10 course home prepared meal which included all of the freshly made Ricotta you could eat really and great wine. I would say this is a must do for anyone visiting. We loved strolling the streets in Noto and Ragusa tasting a variety of Sicilian delicacies every few blocks. We saw amazing Archeological sites in Siracusa and Taormina and took a trip up to approximately 3000' on Mount Etna. Let’s not forget about the abundance of pistachio's and cannolis. We sampled cannolis in every area we visited. I have to say my favorite one was in Noto :-). Thank goodness most of Sicily is a big Stairmaster! I have been to Rome, Florence and Pisa and found Sicily my favorite. Part of the reason I feel this way was having your lovely home as a base made for a memorable vacation Thanks again for a great place to stay Rosie. Ciao Elaine, Naomi, Suzan and Gail

A perfect spot!

Thank you so much for letting us stay at your beautiful home in Modica. We were both really taken with the town - it really is a gem of a place. You are certainly never short of wonderful walks and places to eat and drink without having to get in the car and travel elsewhere. On the other hand, there are so many beautiful places within a 30 minute drive it would seem a shame not to! And, your house is the perfect place to be based too - clearly lovingly restored, with great attention to detail. We will be back!

Fantastic!

This is definitely the place to rent if you want to experience true Italian culture in Modica, Sicily! When we arrived at the airport, we were met by Georgio, the property manager. He was so welcoming and helpful with any needs we had during our stay. The property owner, Rosie, was the reason we decided to rent this place. She truly cares that you enjoy your stay in Modica and that everything is perfect! The apartment had everything needed to feel like you were actually living in Italy. Wonderful beds with comfortable linens and pillows, which were changed out every week by Georgio's wife, Antonella. Every evening, if weather permitted, we enjoyed sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine and listening to Italian families gathering for dinner. Steps away were many macelleria (meat shop), pastecceria (bakery shop), Pescheria (fish shop), Panettiere (bread shop), formaggio (cheese shop) and much more. Also, we were able to buy fresh vegetables and fruit everyday just a short walk away. The property is also not far away from the train station, which we used to visit Syracusa! Also, the bus station terminal is within walking distance if you want to venture to Modica Alto (upper Modica) or any of the surrounding towns such as Pozzallo (wonderul), Ragusa, or maybe Scili. This property had everything one could need to have a wonderful experience in Modica. Great property owner, manager and location! Thank you, again, Rosie and Georgio!!

Charming, comfortable, great location

This beautifully restored and cleverly designed house is a great base for a stay in Modica and the Noto valley. It is very close to the center of Modica Bassa with its wonderful cafes and lively atmosphere, nestled in a dramatic ravine. The house has a terrace that can be opened to become part of the dining area, so the space flows in and out, and, when opened, a delightful cross breeze cools everything in the evening. But there is also air conditioning if you need it. The rooms are cozy and the original architectural details have been preserved, but fixtures are up to date and make living there easy. The owners have very good taste and have created something that is both harmonious and colorful at the same time. The property manager, Giorgio, is extraordinary. He makes himself available to help in every sort of situation, and you feel, from your first moment there, that you have a great friend who is concerned about you and will make sure that you have the support you need for whatever may arise. We loved the house and love Modica -- a small city with a feeling of authenticity rather than that of a tourist Mecca, yet easily in reach of and connected to all the places a tourist may want to be. Thanks to the owners, Rosanna and Nora, for making their home available to guests. Best wishes from Susan and Jack.

Perfection

Giorgio - what a great host. Helped us to the apartment, thoroughly toured the apartment and gave us a tour of Modica. While on the tour we stopped by a restaurant where he made us dinner reservations. He also made supper / dinner reservations for us on Christmas Eve and Christmas day (very limited openings). My 17 year old son, wife and I spent 5 days in Modica and enjoyed every moment. The apartment was perfect and we didn't need for anything. We could easily walk to town and there are many towns nearby to visit. An awesome visit.

Comfortable stay in a charming authentic home

The house is beautifully restored and very comfortable. It is perfectly located for a base to explore the surrounding area and there are many things to see and do nearby. The house has every amenity you could imagine needing and it always felt like coming home after a day out. It was a pleasure cooking in the fabulous kitchen and reading through all the information thoughtfully provided to plan our next day's adventure. The property manager, Giorgio, was helpful and very friendly. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We would happily return and highly recommend this property.

A Perfect Home in Sicily

We enjoyed our home away from home in Modica a great deal. Located in a picturesque alleyway, our home had two comfortable bedrooms, two bathrooms, cosy living and dining rooms, a well-stocked kitchen, and two balconies. Everything was spotlessly clean. Parking was available on the street. Giorgio, the house manager, was most cordial, and went above and beyond in arranging our stay. He met us upon our arrival and showed us around. He also arranged two private meals for us - a ricotta lunch hosted by Maria on her dairy farm and a 13-course fish lunch at a local restaurant. Both places showcased Sicilian food; everything was delicious. Giorgio also surprised us with an unexpected visit to an olive oil processing plant which was most interesting. and regaled us with tidbits re Modica and Sicily throughout our stay. Modica itself is an interesting town with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and food shops/stalls just a short walk from where we stayed. We especially enjoyed the cheese and salami shop in town.

Great location for getting to know Modica

This house has all we needed to enjoy our stay in Modica. Two couples lived comfortably for nine days, with the one shower presenting some scheduling issues. We enjoyed being in the neighborhood with the chatter of the children and the Sicilians arguing. But maybe I'm used to all that being Modicano. Close to shops, cafés, restaurants. Based our travels here for Southeastern Sicily, although going west to Agrigento involves some challenging roads. Modica is a beautiful place so you can just stay here, relax, and enjoy the people and the food.

Loved it!

We stayed at this lovely and comfortable Modica apartment for four nights. Everything about it was great. Location was perfect, a one minute walk to the Main Street in town, yet the house is in a quiet block. You get the full house, 2 floors of charm and everything you will need for a great stay in the great town of Modica. The house was well stocked with everything you could possibly need. Rosie is the perfect hostess and Giorgio, the caretaker was awesome. They both are always available with suggestions and anything else you would need. The apartment itself (2 floors) was very clean, lots of charming details and a place you wanted to come back to. Couldn't have asked for better And Maria (the cleaning person), we took a cooking class with her. Arranged by both Rosie and Giorgio for us. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Sicily. Maria is an amazing cook and we loved making all these pasta and other traditional Sicilian dishes with her. The best part was sitting down afterwards with her family to enjoy this wonderful meal. Highly recommended addition to a vacation in Modica We look forward to our next trip to Sicily and would certainly hope to stay at Rosie's house and visit Modica again ( felt like a real Sicilian town). And eat at La Contea, great food at a great price

Fantastic getaway, beautiful house

This stay surpassed all our expectations. Gorgeous home. Beautifully renovated and tastefully decorated with all the modern necessities needed to make your stay comfortable. Everything you would want in your home was in this home. It was as if the owners knew what you would need on your stay before you realized you would need it. Very comfortable mattresses and a very nice terrace to enjoy. Well managed and owners quick to reply. We were greeted by Georgio who was very friendly and very helpful. The house can be tricky to find so it was great to meet up with Georgio at a central place as he navigated us to the house. The house is centrally located and close to all the conveniences. We did the Sicilian dinner experience offered. It was a delicious dinner served with great wine and Maria was a wonderful chef. Without a doubt would recommend this house and in a heart beat would stay again.

Immaculate, well equipped, within walking distance to shops and restaurants--- a Gem!

We were greeted and escorted to the lovely residence by a charming, English-speaking Sicilian. Once there we found a kitchen outfitted for a chef, large, lovely rooms and two sunny balconies. The town center was steps away but the apartment, on a secluded, flower-potted via, was extremely quiet and restful. Modica has a broad range of good restaurants, chocolate shops and baroque buildings to explore and enjoy. A highly recommended property, indeed.

A wonderful Christmas

Our group of 7 ( a couple of parents with two girls aged 12 & 8, 2 grannies and 1 friend) stayed at Rosie's beautiful apartment for one week over Christmas and had the best time ever! The apartment is truly beautiful, cozy and tastefully decorated and it is by far the best equipped of the many properties we have rented in the past. We had not understood the flat was on two floors and that was a great plus so everyone could enjoy some privacy despite there being 7 of us. We never felt the house was too crowded and the 2 bathrooms were crucial. Modica was a good choice in terms of location as we could easily visit different places every day without having to drive too long. We managed to see a incredible number of places such as Siracusa, Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Marzamemi, Capo Passero, Cava d' Ispica and many more. The on site assistance is great, George is very helpful and by the evening of our arrival we had been introduced to a number of establishments and shops and had been given a lot of insider tips about what to do and where to go. We did not miss out on any ! By the time of our departure we were friends with most of the shopkeepers in the neighborhood. We really hope to have a chance to come back to Modica and to Rosie's and we can absolutely recommend her place to others. Thanks for all Rosie and George. Chiara & family

Book this place. Discover Sicily and stay here as your base for exploring the fascinating sites. The house is in a stunning location. I wish we had longer to linger and take it all in. Very off-the-tourist track which I love and fully appreciate. You'll have everything you need to sit back and chill after a busy or lazy day of your choice. Enjoy every moment. I want to go back again (and again) and highly recommend this property. The owners clearly are invested in living well and enjoying life. It's reflected in the stunning renovation. Thank you Rosie for letting us enjoy your amazing house. We loved it.

Old world charm meets comfortable elegance

Right from our first communication, the owners were friendly and helpful. The photos you see online are lovely, but nothing can prepare you for the wonderful feeling you get from walking into this beautiful home ~ it's exactly how it feels, like home ~ but the idealistic version of your home, where you have restored all of its best features and upgraded it with the modern comforts that you couldn't do without in 2015. And of course you know it's NOT home as soon as you step out. We did a quick unpacking and then headed out on to the streets to enjoy the streets brimming with life as we stared up in awe at the Unesco world heritage site that provided the backdrop for our time there. So much to absorb and enjoy at your doorstep that you might not actually look to head into the car to expand your radius for quite some time. The amenities were generous, with a well equipped kitchen to allow us to balance the delectable local eats with those that we chose to prepare on our own. The owners had generously compiled a thoroughly helpful "book of knowledge" sharing their collective wisdom for getting the most of our time there, and we followed much of it, but alas, our week wasn't long enough to get to the end of their list of "must try"'s ~ the home cooked meal that the owners arranged to have prepared there in our kitchen with locally harvested ingredients topped off with a delicious Sicilian wine was a highlight! This property had so much to offer our only regret was not staying longer!

Everything we could ask for

We had a lovely 2 week stay at La Margherita. Rosie's pre-trip info was bang on. Georgio went out of his way to make certain our stay was very enjoyable. Parking was a breeze (& free). The apartment was everything we hoped it would be. We enjoyed both terraces as well as the proximity to Modica's centro. It proved to be a great location from which we made many day trips. Both Judy & I would have no problem recommending La Margherita to friends & family. A presto.

Wonderful Stay

My wife, sister and I had a wonderful stay in Modica. Rosie did a great job beforehand providing us information on the town and surroundings, as well as the arrangement of her home. We were greeted by her representative, Giorgio, who met us on the edge of town and guided us to the property. Rosie's house is a gem. I would call it a town home as it is nestled on a side street, surrounded by other similar properties. Rosie's house shares common sidewalls with neighbors, but there is no one above or below. The street was very quite, but close (a block or so) from the hustle and bustle of Monica. Rosie has done a terrific job of modernizing and remodeling the house which is well equipped with furnishings and all the household utensils one could want. We loved Monica, the surroundings and Rosie's place and would return if the opportunity presents itself.

About the host

Host profile image
Our jobs (journalist and teacher) have allowed us to travel for long periods of time during the summer months and over 10 years ago we travelled to Sicily for the first time. During my last sabbatical year, we decided that travelling to Sicily wasn't enough and that we both wanted to 'put down roots' in a place that felt like home from our very first trip. I spent most of my sabbatical restoring our 18th century home in the historic centre of Modica. A daunting task, but made easier because of the wonderful and hardworking people I met along the way. The renovation was completed, as promised, by the end of June 2011 and we spend our first summer in our new house. We love it and we hope that you too enjoy your stay in Modica - it is a truly amazing town.

Why they chose this property

Modica is most definitely 'off the beaten track'! Sicily's southeast is, in our opinion, a particularly beautiful part of an already beautiful and interesting island. Its proximity to Siracusa, Noto and Catania makes it easy to get to and appealing in terms of places of interest for tourists. Although Modica is a popular tourist destination, with much to do and see, downtown businesses (restaurants, caffes, farmers' markets) continue to cater to both locals and visitors so that one can really feel what life and living in an southern Italian town is like.

What makes this property unique

Our property is located in the historic centre of town surrounded by cobblestone lanes and streets. We walk everywhere and take the bus or train to the beach and nearby towns. We rent a car when necessary, but if we have the time, I prefer to use public transit. Our favourite caffe, Caffe dell'Arte, is a 5 minute walk from our house as is our favourite pizzeria: La Contea and bar: Hemingway's. There are countless others, but it's nice to have such amazing services nearby. Our house was completely restored by our Florentine architect who was committed to using traditional materials and reusing/restoring whatever we could, it definitely has all of the modern conveniences and comforts of home. The best part is that the beach is 20 minutes away!
