About this property
Mountain Town Home Base: Fish, Ski, Hunt and Explore the beautiful San Juan Mts.
Relax in this historic home built in 1942 by the US Forest Service for employee housing. It's within walking distance of the old west town of Monte Vista. Enjoy the incredible recreation of the San Luis Valley. Ski "The most snow in Colorado" at Wolf Creek Ski Area, just 47.5 miles away. World class fly fishing just minutes away on the Rio Grande River, nearby lakes and San Juan Mountain streams. Great Sand Dunes National Park is only an hour a way - beautiful. Mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing and more! Try Quincy's steak house - it's a Colorado original.
Our favorite fishing holes:
Rock Creek Campground - this is only 20 minutes or so from the house and is stunningly beautiful. A picnic alone is worth the trip. Driving Directions: In Monte Vista, CO, take State 15 south 2.4 miles to Rock Creek Campground sign. Turn right go 2.5 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn left onto County Rd. 28 and go 10 miles to campground sign. Turn left into campground. NOTE: County Rd. 28 is dirt after 3.1 miles and single-lane in places.

Home Lake - 5 minutes from the house:

Big Meadows Reservoir is always good fishihg and about 50 minutes West of the house just off 160 on the way up to Wolf Creek Pass.

The Rio Grande should be just over peak flow so fishing should be great anywhere. Here is a nice map of the public lake and river fishing in the area.

If you really want to catch some fish and have a great day I recommend https://www.wolfcreekanglers.com/ Contact Rick Walker at 530-318-5694, They do both float and wade trips on the Rio and NEW Rick told me they just struck a deal with a property owner 20 miles South of Monte Vista with over a mile of private frontage on the Alamosa River. Rick said it is special so you might want to give him a call. I haven't been down to the private land yet, but plan to go.
