Unspoiled by tourism, this section of the Tygart River is truly an undiscovered gem nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

The historic community of Arden, West Virginia, is home to the Tygart River Guest House. It is off the beaten path and serves as a convenient hub with direct access to the river – yet only 8 miles from the Philippi, WV where you can find restaurants, groceries, gas, pharmacy, hospital and more. The Arden Grade Road was once a main route through the mountains on the B&O railway during the early 1900’s and follows along the river providing spectacular views! HOUSE DESCRIPTION - Newly Renovated!

• Front Porch
• Spacious Back Deck (partially covered)
• Sleeps 10
• 4 Bedrooms
• 3 Full Baths
• Fully furnished
• Close to Philippi/ABU and many state parks

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious “old timey” front porch, complete with swing, rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture – great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering, features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is an upright piano dating back to the early 1940’s and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a private back deck with patio set and a semi-private backyard view.

You’ll be right at home in the spacious Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and loveseat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and beautiful slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features staircase access to the upper bunk for easy access.

Very nice house and so close to the beautiful river

We loved the house had everything we needed as it was well equipped for cooking The rooms were comfortable The only thing I would add is that there needs to be screens on all the upstairs windows for small children for when windows are raised for safety The owners were friendly We used both porches and loved the river our grandkids are already saying they want to go back sometime It's a five star place

Great Place for Family

Highly recommend this home especially for a large family get-together. We had 4 couples plus a 3yr old and 3mo old. The large open area between the kitchen, dining room and living room worked great for meals, games and crafts! We sang camp songs around the campfire. Took fun group photos. Climbed on rocks in the river. Great place!

Family Wedding

We were there for our granddaughter’s wedding at Adaland Mansion. This was a convenient location for traveling to and from the event. The house was beautifully decorated and very roomy for a large family. Everything was clean and comfortable. The rain kept us from enjoying the outdoors but there was lots of room for outdoor sitting and grilling. Sherry is an exceptionally good host. I would recommend the riverfront home to anyone traveling to that area.

Nice family getaway

We enjoyed our stay although the weather did not allow us to fully enjoy all the property had to offer. The house is large enough for multiple families. The beds were very comfy. If you have any early risers in your group, they should be on the first floor as every step taken upstairs is heard thru the entire house and the stairs are very loud. The kitchen is well equipped as was everything in the house from extra blankets, towels and detergent for laundry.

Spacious house in a lovely setting

We were very pleased with how spacious the house was. The kitchen, dining room, living room, and both front porch and back porches were very open and great places for a large family to hang out. We loved the rocks and the river across the road. There are lots of good parks nearby, but we found ourselves spending more time at the house, and the river in front than we anticipated. It was a pleasant surprise!

Beautiful location, well maintained home

The location is beautiful. We were a group of 7 adults, 2 children, and 1 dog; the house was adequate in space and bathrooms, if 1 or 2 adults are willing to sleep in the bunk beds in the children's room. The house is clean and well maintained with plenty of extra towels and sheets if needed. Kitchen is also well stocked with pots and pans and cutlery. Dishwasher and washing machine works well; detergents provided. The beds were a little uncomfortable for some members of our group. Great place for a family reunion or weekend getaway. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT CELL PHONE RECEPTION AND GOOGLE MAPS

Lovely retreat by the river

Nice place for a get together with friends. There was plenty of room for 7 adults and one child. Nice to sit on the front porch and listen to the river. Nothing is nearby though. There's one small grocery and a Dollar General in the nearby town of Phillipi (about 20 minutes) and a Walmart about 40 minutes away. The owners were very nice and live right next door should you need anything.

Very comfortable home

We came for my husbands birthday and unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. We still had a wonderful time together. The house is very clean, well kept and very beautifully restored . The beds were comfortable. The house is very well equipped with thoughtful extras. We cooked at the house the entire weekend and the kitchen is well equipped. We brought our own card games but there were plenty supplied and didn’t really need to bring anything. Very thoughtful. Lastly the owners dogs are adorable, especially Jango. He is so laid back and friendly. A very well behaved dog. Our dogs got along great with him and looked out door for him to come over all day. Thanks again for hosting such a special house.

40th Birthday Surprise

What a great place for our family to gather to surprise our oldest daughter for her 40th birthday! The house is comfortable and spacious, although a couple of the mattresses are a little soft. We had 12 people staying at the house (a couple - that's us, the parents, a family of 6, and a family of 4). Our third daughter lives 25 minutes away and her family of 6 also joined in the activities. We all loved the river, walking on the rocks and wading a bit. We also visited Audra State Park (twice - it's about 40 minute away) where there's a great swimming spot in the Middle River. The dog-loving kids loved the friendly dogs from next door. We made use of the bbq grill and the outdoor area at the back, as well as the gazebo. We totally recommend Tygart River Guest House.

Our family getaway

My husband and I met up with our son and daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law and youngest daughter for a lovely weekend at a great VRBO. Sherry was a wonderful host and was very good about getting us information for hiking and swimming in the area. The river our front is beautiful and was a great feature to this property. Pretty much everything we needed was provided. I wish the bed in the one front room wasn't so bouncy but other than that everyone slept well. Hopefully we will be able to have a return visit in the future. We are already missing the dogs next door who were also great hosts and would take us for walks along the river. The dogs would also hang out on the back deck occasionally and were very well behaved.

Check in and out was a breeze. House and property was clean and comfortable. It was a little difficult to find at first, but easy enough to navigate once we knew where we were. Beautiful views and the private gazebo on the river edge was simply to die for. Loved our entire stay and am looking forward to staying here again

Wonderful experience!!! Well appointed rooms. Charming history. It was a long awaited girls weekend with my sisters and nieces since covid. This place is so relaxing. Whether porch sitting, gathering at the firepit, having dinner on the cozy deck, or petting the owners sweet dogs, Jango and Dolce, or just watching the river flow by. You won’t regret a visit to this adorable farm house. Thank you Sherry!

About the host

Hosted by Sherry Hubbard

Host profile image
Josh and Sherry Hubbard moved to West Virginia many decades ago as avid rafters & kayakers who loved the whitewater and the abundance of rivers and streams in the area. We found a place along the river we're still here! Now we have a growing family and have become knitted into the fabric of West Virginia. Josh is a local artisan crafting wood and metal into truly beautiful works of art. Sherry works from home as a freelance writer and graphic designer. We have a home next door to the guest house and are nearby if you have a questions or need a hand and we're always happy to help you plan your getaway to Wild and Wonderful WV!

Why they chose this property

Parts of the guest house date back to the early 1900's during the coal mining era when tracks of the B & O Railroad line ran directly through the community of Arden. Since those days, an extensive renovation and many amenities have been added to make a comfortable yet historic guest house. It's a great spot to gather with friends and family since you have the run of the place. It sleeps 10-12 easily and there are plenty of central gathering areas to spend time together.

What makes this property unique

This home is situated on the Tygart River with views from every bedroom as well as the front porch. It's a lovely out of the way place to catch your breath and enjoy the mountain air. Period elements from the early 1900's are still preserved in the home including original pine floors and bead board walls along with relics from the coal mining era. Josh is a West Virginia artisan creating art out of wood and metal. He built a driftwood gazebo next to the river which comes from local wood collected along the Tygart. We hope you enjoy!
