It was a wonderful and comfortable home. We loved being on Lake Superior and being able to walk on the gorgeous beach. It was very serene, and the only sound was the lapping of the waves. We really appreciated that this lovely home was pet-friendly.
If you are looking for a place away from crowds and people this is your spot. Beautiful view of the lake with your own private rock beach. We spent hours on the beach and rarely saw another person. It was heaven. We had a great fire on the beach under the amazing starlight which we cannot see back home because of the lights from the city. Huge deck to relax and listen to the waves. This was our second time staying here and we look forward to coming back again. The host was very accommodating and made check in and check out easy and convenient.
Pristine cabin with a beautiful pebble beach and lake view! Hosts are very responsive and helpful. Wonderful area with a lot to see and do! Highly recommend!
Beautiful place with plenty of room and a stunning sun room. The adjacent pebble beach is extraordinary and perfect for walks. Amazing views for relaxation and just a short drive into Grand Marais for shops and restaurants.
We arrived on a rainy night - so we were thrilled to be greeted by such a cozy cabin - and in such a great location! We kayaked, hiked, ate delicious cinnamon rolls from just down the road, walked the beach - and even better - had campfires on the beach under the full moon! Mary provided great information before check in so we knew to bring our own spices, charcoal and firewood. (Thanks for that, Mary!) The cabin had everything else we needed (and then some)! Some of the gadgets harkened back to my childhood, they were fun to see! The weather was nice and cool, and sunny most days! We had an amazing time and hope to be back!
Twelve Mile Rock is a magical place. The home was beautiful and the setting…perfection. Make sure to spend most of your time in the newly built 3 season porch. The view of the lake and the sound of the waves combine to relax your muscles and free your mind. I love the kitsch of the 1972 National Geographic magazines on the bookshelf…contrasted with the Bose sound system! Great care was taken to outfit the kitchen with everything you could imagine. The hosts were great and communicated proactively. I can’t wait to book my next visit!!
The perfect MN North Shore retreat on the big water
This would be splendid for a family with kids, or two couples. But even for a couple with two dogs instead--and at the cooler start of summer in early June--it was wonderful. More than a mile of public beach to explore, with a bit of Superior Hiking Trail (all of it a dog's favorite, too!). And plenty of light-filled space inside facing the lake during the day. I've never taken so many pictures of the views, day and night when the moon is up. If you come for swimming, hiking and plain relaxing more than just touring Grand Marais, Twelve Mile Rock should be on your shortlist of places to consider. And I never appreciated early June up north more than when we finally returned to the Twin Cities heat at end of our week's stay!
My husband, dog and I had a wonderful week at this home 12 miles north of Grand Marais, MN. Lake Superior is about 40 yards from the huge deck; there is a lot of privacy; the kitchen is very well equipped. Not a fancy interior but everything you need. I also appreciate how good the lighting is inside: lots of lamps and overhead lighting for reading, playing cards, etc. Hosts were great to work with and very clear instructions. Highly recommend!
Upon arrival we walked straight to the lake side of the house. The waves were crashing into the shore. All you saw was water and beach. It was breathtaking. Exactly what we needed after 18+ months of being cooped up due to the pandemic. We thoroughly enjoyed the house, the property, the things to do. I hope to go back in the future. Thanks Steels for a wonderful getaway.
We had an amazing time at 12milerock.
The location was perfect, the cabin was wonderful! We had a fantastic week hiking and exploring beautiful Grand Marais.
I could have not asked for a better place to get away from it all and relax and recharge. The house is great! The deck offered a place of complete peace and serenity listening to the sounds of nature and a beautiful view of the lake. Long walks down the beautiful rock beach with the dogs and rarely seeing another person was beyond amazing. Check in was easy. The owners were available and very gracious. I can’t thank them enough for sharing their slice of heaven.
We enjoyed a restful, rejuvenating week at Twelve Mile Rock. The house is comfortable and has everything needed, including books about the North Shore. There is plenty to do in the area, but sometimes the beach and water and sky are enough. The long stretch of beach to the west is remarkable!
Having our very own stretch of the North Shore for a week was so wonderful! We enjoyed June wildflowers dotting the property as well as daily sightings of deer, geese, loons, and eagles. The cabin was comfortable and just right for our family of 3 and Golden Retriever. We live to cook for ourselves during these weeks away and found all that we needed in the kitchen. Thank you for a most relaxing stay. We'd love to come back again!
Well appointed kitchen, privacy to the max, pebble beach, peace and quiet for a whole week was amazing! This place is highly recommended by us and our fur baby. We saw bald eagles, deer, foxes and even a mink. We found our first ever agates and other beautiful rocks on this beach and other beaches in the area. Gunflint trail is a must as well as Artist Point in Grand Marais. Grand Portage was gorgeous, as well. This place made time stand still as the days were long and we loved it. We will never forget this vacation.
Everything was wonderful, even the constantly changing lake and weather. Charlie and I were deeply sad when it was time to leave and head back to Chicago. Looking forward in returning soon!
Property was ready to go, check in via remote lockbox code was easy. Quiet days, wonderful nights with stars, and some real cold water. Kayaking was great. Bugs were livable. Flies kept at bay onshore with a good breeze. Good grocery selection at the IGA and COOP in Grnad Marais.
My own personal preference is for gas grills vs charcoal, at VRBO rentals, primarily due to simplicity. The charcoal grill works great, but for 2 people, on the 2nd night, I went to the stove sautee for the shrimp.
Owner was very attentive on making sure everything worked. Place was well equipped and very comfortable. We'll be back next year.
We enjoyed our trip greatly on Lake Superior. Our home we rented was very nice and relaxing. It felt like home.
Great Lake view and access to the beach area was a huge plus. The home had everything we needed and was nice.
We will definitely go back next year.
We very much enjoyed the wonderful views of Lake Superior and the splash of wildflowers from the deck behind the home. The Steeles had thought of everything imaginable for the kitchen and the bath. We also appreciated the assortment of books and magazines to help orient us for our brief stay. And our dog acted like she’d never left home. All together, it was a splendid relaxing experience. Thank you.

Why they chose this property
We were amazed at the simple, stark beauty of this property, the pebble peach and its relative privacy. Every time we are here we feel renewed. It makes us happy to read the many comments in our guest book and find that others experience that same kind of renewal here.
What makes this property unique
It is rare to be able to walk along Lake Superior on a relatively flat pebble beach for more than a mile. You can do that from Twelve Mile Rock walking West. It is exquisitely beautiful along this stretch of Lake Superior - peaceful and calming to the soul. We have also enjoyed lovingly caring for this cottage. We have added cozy amenities, books, games, quilts, cross-stitch samplers, warm throws and pillows to make you feel right at home. We hope you do and we invite you to join us. TwelveMileRock.com
