About this property

Coveside Waterfront Secluded Cottage on Seal Cove

NOTE: we will refund one hundred dollars (in cash when you arrive) if you bring your own towels and linens.

People who stay with us comment on the peace and beauty of the place. Some relax on the porch and listen to the wind in the trees. Others spend their days out on walks in the area, or go for drives around the beautiful peninsulas of mid-coast Maine.

The 1962 L.C. Andrews log cabin has been remodeled with a new kitchen and additional bedroom. There is a large living room/great room for reading, talking, and relaxing. We have purposely avoided bringing in cable or TV so you can enjoy the nature around you. For those who just can't get too far away, we have wifi and even an Amazon Echo Dot. You can walk to water's edge in seconds, and put your kayaks in for a paddle around the Cove or out to the Damariscotta River.

Both bedrooms have a queen bed, closet, and bureau. The great room has two sofas, soft chairs, and a dining area for six. The bathroom has a full tub and shower.

Seal Cove is teeming with wildlife and you'll have a great view of the seals and waterfowl from the bench in front of the cabin.

Most of our guests have been returning for years (which may be why we don't have a lot of reviews!). It is a very special place.

Cottage on Seal Cove

My husband and I both agreed that this place was wonderful, and we hope to return. The cabin is cozy yet felt quite spacious, the setting is beautiful, quiet and serene. The location was great, with good proximity to many other places to visit in mid-coast Maine, a short drive to Damariscota, reasonably close to the Coastal Botanical Gardens, Farnsworth Art museum in Rockland, the Arctic Museum at Bowdoin, and lots of beautiful walking and hiking areas, to name a few. Gordon was a friendly and very helpful host. We're looking forward to returning!

Beautiful getaway cabin in a gorgeous spot.

A lovely location close to middle Maine attractions. Beautiful walking trails nearby. Seals sunned themselves in the cove most every afternoon. The cabin is comfortable and just disconnected enough (good wifi connection). Overall a great experience.

We loved it!!

From the moment we walked in the door we knew it was the quintessential Maine experience that we always hope for. The cottage has a warm, cozy atmosphere and it’s furnished to perfection. The kitchen was well equipped and the open concept was perfect for family times. Outdoors, our kids loved playing on the waterfront along Seal Cove, and we loved in the evening sitting out on the lawn. We’re already looking forward to coming back next year!

A perfect Maine vacation

We have just returned from a lovely week at this charming cottage and we were delighted with everything! The location was perfect and a great base for trips to Pemaquid Point, Boothbay Harbor, Camden and Monhegan Island. We brought our kayaks and ventured out to view the seals in the cove and viewed fireworks for the 4th of July right on the water in nearby Damariscotta. It was the quintessential Maine vacation and it was all the more enjoyable as the cottage was perfect. A well equipped kitchen for cooking meals and comfortable beds. The screened-in porch was great at night for watching fireflies and having a glass (or two) of wine. The owners are fabulous and we would certainly stay at this property again!

A perfect week in a perfect rental

This property was a true gem. Very quiet with beautiful views of Seal Cove. It is in a magnificent spot overlooking Seal Cove. Calm water for kayaks, which are available to renters. There are seals, lots of them and so much fun to watch. The house is great. Airy, comfortable, clean. Has everything you need. Gordon, the owner is the best, helpful and friendly. This area of Maine has lots to see and do. Christmas Cove down the road is a lovely place to visit. The Cove Side restaurant has good food and an amazing view! If you are looking for a getaway in Maine, look no further!

Fabulous

Spent first week in August at the cabin. Loved it. We were looking for quiet, secluded and interesting. Hit all 3 marks, the first two marks are self explanatory. The third was the opportunity to see many seals, horseshoe crabs and even a young blue heron. Gordon and Sheila were great hosts - friendly, helpful, nearby in case we needed. Except for checking in when we first got there and the night before we left, we didn't see them.

Even Nicer Than Expected

Wonderful vacation experience! The cabin and the location exceeded our expectations - beautiful, quiet spot and a cozy home-away-from-home atmosphere. The cabin was spotless and tastefully decorated, partly with Sheila's art. Put our kayaks in the water and enjoyed Seal Cove and Damariscotta River, spying eagles and lots of seals. Great location to reach New Harbor, Pemaquid & Round Pond quickly, with beautiful hiking trails nearby. Gordon and Sheila are terrific, friendly hosts, ready to help out in any way they can. If you are new to the area, be sure to check the list of restaurants and places to visit that they put together. Both thumbs up!

Peace and tranquilaty!

I stayed at this cabin with my kids, 3 and 6, for a week and it was absolute bliss! The cabin was open and airy, spacious yet cozy. It was perfect for our little family. There was a lot to do and see close by but I mostly just loved sitting by the water while the kids explored the beach. I joined in sometimes too of course! We found so many snails, hermit crabs and a horseshoe crab even came up on to land to say hello to us. The kids spent hours just throwing rocks in the water, playing in the mud when the tide was out and searching for hermit crabs and treasures. We used the kayaks to check out the little "islands" at low tide which was a big adventure. My daughter said she felt like an explorer. Inside has everything needed to be comfortable including cozy beds, lots of natural light, essential kitchen items and that screened in porch is pure heaven! After the kids were in bed I enjoyed a glass of wine and a few chapters of a book on the porch and felt completely relaxed! During the day we ate our lunches and dinners on the porch, did some watercolor painting and played games. The owners were close by, we're so kind, and readily available to answer any questions while at the same time respecting our privacy. Being there alone with just the kids I felt safe having them right next door. We took a few morning trips to a lovely beach close by and there are also 2 playgrounds at the local schools open to the public that the kids really enjoyed. I cried when it was time to leave and I will always carry with me the memories of our time there. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! Amy

Great Getaway

This property has privacy and is a great place to relax. The camp has everything you need along with a guide to the area venues. This is how a vacation should be! Loved all the seabirds! Quiet cove so they tend to enjoy the area also!

Vacation gem

This cabin is wonderful in every way. The owners have drawn on a deep spirit of generosity to create a warm and inviting space. The living room is roomy and comfortable, the artwork on the walls is lovely, the kitchen is well stocked, and the location is beautiful and quiet. Highly recommend.

Quiet, peaceful cabin perfect for rest and relaxation

We recently stayed at this cabin and can not say enough wonderful things about it. It's quaint and rustic, yet has all the comforts of home. Our family would go on morning kayak trips to see the seals and my young boys would give their daily waves to the local lobstermen. It's a great place to relax and focus on the simple things in life. We really enjoyed our stay. Gordon and Sheila are amazing hosts and are very accommodating.

Perfectly peaceful

This cabin and location and setting could not be more fabulous. It was well-kept, perfectly sized and equipped, and easy to use, find supplies, & access. My 2-year old was enamored by the water, boats, crabs and seals outside and the games inside. There was the perfect amount of decor - enough to make us feel at home but not so much that my son was going to destroy anything. :-) It was quiet and beautiful but easy to access restaurants, beaches, and shops when needed. Of course Gordon and Sheila were extra kind and helpful! We feel so lucky to have found this gem and are hoping to come back again and again and again. We really could not have been happier.

Lovely digs and sweet people

Echoing the previous reviews to say that this rental had everything we could have wanted and more for ourselves and our two kids, 5 and 7. Extremely comfortable, peaceful, and well-appointed, in a terrific spot within spitting distance of gorgeous coastline to explore, great meals and cute towns. The little beach, changing tides, rocks and sea creatures were endlessly fascinating for my city kids; my daughter liked to run around the yard shouting "I'm living the dream!" The whole area was very friendly, low-key, and accessible; it was easy to feel at home. Gordon and Sheila were so kind and welcoming, full of great tips for local spots. I would stay here again in an instant and hope we can. Many thanks!

Hidden Gem in Maine

I'm hesitant to review this lovely cottage on Seal Cove not because the stay was average, but because I'm selfish and don't want others to discover this hidden gem!!! My young family has vacationed in the Pemaquid area for the last 7 years, but staying cove side is quite the experience. This was are second year and you'll hear no complaints! Our 6 and 3 year olds love walking right down to the water to explore and help launch kayaks and paddle around the cove looking for wildlife and "treasures." It is extremely peaceful (with the exception of our children squealing/screaming in excitement). This year start we saw hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, a variety of birds and seals. We spotted seals everyday. One day we saw 22 seals basking on the rocks at one time! They even joined us kayaking. Groceries, shops, and lobster coops are a short drive away. The kitchen has everything you need to make your meals and having linens provided is a bonus. Gordon and Sheila have thought of everything you may need to make you stay fun and relaxing. We can't wait to come back next year!!

You won't find a better vacation spot than this!

This was our second year staying at this cottage, and it felt like home the moment we stepped through the front door. We love this place and can't say enough about it! We kid the owners that one day this will be ours, but in the meantime we love "borrowing" it from them! Very clean and well-maintained, you don't have to worry about anything. We had many seals on the rocks in the cove this year - not so many last year - and enjoyed kayaking this year for the first time. The seals would pop their heads up to let you know they were close by. Be sure to visit the Maine Botanical Gardens while you are here -- just a 25 minute drive away.

Perfection!

My family has been coming to this part of Maine for many years and this was by far our favorite place that we have stayed. The location is perfect - secluded and quiet, but still close to town for anything you need. The cabin itself is clean, very comfortable, and very well equipped. We enjoyed many relaxing afternoons reading on the screened in porch overlooking the water. My son absolutely loved the small beach just steps away from the cabin and we all loved watching the seals play in the water. We can't wait to come back!

Cozy Cabin Retreat

Absolutely Perfect!

What an incredible little cottage- It exceeded all of our expectations. We were looking for a peaceful get a way and this cabin fit the bill. The owners have thought of every detail to make their guests comfortable- they even supply all of the lobster tools needed! Our highlights included: Many candlelight meals on the screen porch Kayaking with the seals right out of the backyard Every sunset was stunning Very comfortable beds And so many more... We got to meet Gordon, one of the owners and is such a nice man. I wish our schedules had aligned so we could have shared a beer. Looking forward to returning again and we are still talking about what a special place it is.

Sublime!

My husband and I have been vacationing in this adorable and charming cottage on Seal Cove for over 10 years. I can't say enough good things about it. It was updated in 2011 but is still rustic and charming; the location -- 50 feet from the water -- is dreamy; the owners are great and lots of fun; and it's a good base for visiting mid-coast Maine and beyond. Seal Cove, off the Damariscotta River, has it all: kayaking, sailing, lobstering, swimming, watching gorgeous sunsets, and leaving your cares behind. Hiking trails are nearby. South Bristol's lobster pounds will cook up succulent lobsters for you. Damariscotta is 15 minutes away and offers great shopping, restaurants, art, book store, markets, etc. There's a nice little golf course nearby, too. We're totally smitten!

About the host

Hosted by Gordon

Host profile image
Sheila and Gordon live in Santa Barbara, California for 7 months a year, and in South Bristol for 5. Their grown daughters live in California but come to South Bristol every summer. Now they are accompanied by our four grandchildren, so three generations of our family enjoy the area.

Gordon has retired after 31 years as EVP at Yardi, a software company in Santa Barbara, CA; Sheila is an artist who sells her work in Damariscotta, just a few miles from the cabin.

We've been married since 1976, have been living in the same house since 1979, and have had the property in Maine (next door to the cabin) since 1991. While change is good, good things don't have to change.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the South Bristol area quite by accident. We were on our way home from a vacation on North Haven Island when we turned off Hwy 1 at Damariscotta. Three months later we owned the property on Pine Bluff Lane and have spent some time there every summer.

What makes this property unique

What we love most about the area is that it provides peace and quiet when you want it, and yet there is plenty to do all around. Whether hiking (or walking on the trails nearby), fishing, boating, kayaking, or shopping and visiting the many restaurants nearby, there's something for everyone.
