Home away from home

The Holly House is so warm, cozy and inviting from the moment you step through the door. From being greeted with a plate of freshly baked cookies to looking around and feeling right at home by the beautiful decorated home, we couldn’t have asked for a nicer stay. We enjoyed the fun of the Williamsburg area and got to retreat back to “home”.

Perfect for our 5 person family

Holly House is in the perfect location within a short walk to Main Street Gloucester Courthouse. We had a few meals at Sweet Tooth Cafe and Bakery about a block from the house. We had fun doing the statue scavenger hunt along Main. Holly House is less than an hour from everything we came to see: Busch Gardens, Jamestowne Settlement, Historic Yorktown, Virginia Air and Space Centre, and Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences. The owners are very responsive and accommodating. Everything we needed was in the house. Thanks for a great place to stay while we had awesome experiences with our family. We would definitely stay at Holly House again if we are in the area.

Wonderful location and extremely comfortable home away from home

The house is situated in Gloucester which is a really cute town. The house is a short stroll from the high street where there is a good variety of shops and restaurants to choose from. The house was in a good location to visit all of the historical sites and plantations as well as the navel base of Norfolk. The home was very well equipped and had lots of extra touches making the stay one that we will with out a doubt repeat!

Perfect family getaway with easy walk to town of Gloucester

This home was clean and welcoming with a nice patio out back, a kitchen with everything we needed, and a welcoming atmosphere. Our host was helpful and kind, adding small touches that made us feel at home. We will certainly return again. The house is on a safe and quiet residential street, within easy walking distance of a great specialty food store and lots of other cute shops. Keep walking to historic courthouse in town. Thank you so much!!

A fine house!

This is a fine home! You should book it now. We live in Virginia Beach. Our crew of 10 adults rented the Holly House to attend my sons graduation from Christchurch School, about 20 minutes away from Holly House. The graduation started at 9:30am and if you are familiar with this area, you can be stuck in a tunnel and miss out on any fun you have planned so we wanted to be close by. Highlights- fresh baked cookies and fruit upon arrival! Extra clean home. Plenty of kitchen space and well stocked. Quiet street during the night. Walked to Olivia;s for dinner. All the entrees were A+ and the owner came over to talk to us. If you are planning a trip to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Gloucester, or Yorktown this is a great location.

Love our stays at Holly House with Connie

Always attentive and courteous to our requests, Connie is a great host. We have stayed two years in a row now and will continue to come back. This house has location and function and charm, including all of the little things you will need. Connie keeps toys, board games and DVDs for the kids. She also stocks a high chair and PackNPlay, which means we don't have to haul as much for our stay. Check out Gloucester Court House area and book your stay with the Holly House, you won't regret it.

Family wedding

We really enjoyed our stay. With so much family coming out it was nice to stay in one place together. Because the home was comfortable and kid friendly everyone from age three to sixty-five enjoyed it. There were cookies when we arrived, which were a big hit. The location is wonderful and little town center was just a short walk away. We were close to the happy couple getting married and the park they married at. Overall a great time. We had everything we needed in this home, it is worth the stay!

Fantastic!

What a wonderful home and hosts. No detail was over looked from the fresh baked cookies awaiting on our arrival to the beautify decorated and very homie home! We rented the house to spend Easter with our family. Love the location and its proximity to the downtown. We really enjoyed having a nice comfortable and spacious home to come back to after a day of adventuring. Our kids loved all the outdoor space and we even enjoyed a few meals on the patio. Thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality!

Was in town for a wedding at The Inn at Warner Hall and stayed here for the weekend. As described and great location. Mike and Connie had chocolate chip cookies waiting for us at check-in! I would recommend this to any one I know and will stay here again in the future. Thanks a lot!

Holly House--great place for families to feel at home

My siblings and I just spent a week at Holly House--it was lovely. It was top-of-the-line clean and everything was easy to find and in working order. The house is quaint--in the best of ways--but somehow it also manages to be roomy. There are several areas that invite being together, and there is also plenty of room be alone, when needed. We especially enjoyed eating at the table in the back yard.Very, very comfortable. We could not have felt more at home. Mike and Connie were extremely communicative hosts. When we did have needs, as people do who stay somewhere for a week, they answered and were 100% helpful right away. And yes, the freshly baked cookies were waiting for us---such a nice and welcoming touch. We loved Beaverdam Park's hiking trails and boat rentals. While we were visiting, the produce and fresh fish market on Main St was still running--I don't know if they only operate seasonally--and that is the place to get local, fresh food! The vegetarians among us were happy to find Sweet Tooth Cafe on Main St--not just sweets! Plenty of other good restaurants are an easy walk away from the house. The proximity to town is another reason it was such a great place to stay. I highly recommend Holly House.

Holly House is perfect.

We absolutely loved our stay at Holly House. I fell in love with the house the moment we pulled up. When we walked in! We were greeted with a friendly note and homemade brownie cups. The house is well appointed and tastefully decorated. Location is perfect for walking around town. Great little market at the intersection and a lovely sweet shop within walking distance. Walmart is a short drive away. We stayed for my neice's wedding. The house worked wonderfully for our family of 6 and was large enough to have extended family over for meals, as they were all staying at local hotels. I would absolutely recommend Holly House to anyone wanting to stay in the area. It was a joy.

Overall a nice place to stay-out of the way-if you're looking for a quiet getaway.

The house was nice and clean, the kids loved the cookies upon arrival!! (Thank you) The instructions for getting into the house were clear and we received all the information we needed. An outside light would have been nice as we arrived back after dark every evening. There was a motion light but it did not work in the back and we did eventually find a switch for the front, but didn't want to leave it on all day. This is a nice place to stay if you aren't planning too many activities-we found it to be too far and inconvenient to return from Busch Gardens or Williamsburg during the day and then venture out again as it was 40 minutes each direction-even longer if the drawbridge had to go up. There was also a $2 toll to cross the bridge each time. (We should have researched this a little better and asked for the address ahead of time to calculate the travel time to places we went.) There were a couple of restaurants within walking distance, but unfortunately closed by the time we returned from our adventures. The shops nearby were disappointing and nothing our teenagers wanted to see-antiques, dentist, optometrist, exterminator, a bakery closed Sunday and limited hours-again, we should have researched what was nearby. Overall a nice location if you're just looking for a quiet getaway or don't mind traveling -we drove from CT and my brother's family from upstate NY, so after 10+ hours to get there, we weren't liking the additional driving. The house was clean and there was plenty of room-the kitchen was stocked with everything you would need to cook-which we didn't do much of. :) The shower pressure was very low and our long haired girls were frustrated with the time it took to wash/rinse hair. Also, the laundry room porch leaked when it rained and all our shoes got wet-wish there had been a warning about leaving our things out there-once it started, it was obvious it was a normal occurrence-but we didn't notice in time. Overall nice place, but the location wasn't the best for our needs. Owners left numbers, but we had all the information we needed and didn't need to contact them for anything during our stay.

Wonderful, peaceful neighborhood!

We were fortunate to find this lovely location. The house is a charming older home which is impeccably furnished. Everything you need, and more, is furnished for your convenience. The neighborhood is very peaceful and well maintained. The Village of Gloucester is a short walk and very accessible. Highly recommend this property as an excellent alternative to the extremely busy, tourist oriented Williamsburg area. Would definitely stay again!

About the host

My wife and I moved to this county after we finished our US Navy enlistment. Our jobs took us in opposite directions and this area was a good middle ground. We soon fell in love with our new home and decided to start our family here. We have four children, all teenagers, and have found the area to be a wonderful environment in which raise them. We have spent many hours on field trips to the multiple attractions that this area offers. Steeped in history and loaded with fun things to keep our children engaged, we would definitely choose this location again.

Why they chose this property

The Courthouse area is beautiful, quiet and certainly has a long history. We have owed several properties in this county but this house is special because of its location and charm. The street is relaxing and peaceful, as well as centrally located. Being just a short walk to all that the downtown has to offer, makes this house very versatile. Holly House has character that many of today's homes do not offer. It's cozy yet roomy; as well as bright and cheery.
