Relaxing holiday in beautiful location.

We have had a lovely holiday. The house and accommodation were very clean. The owner came by on the Saturday and made us very welcome. He brought over a wifi box which my husband was very glad about. He also brought over a bottle of wine which again my husband liked. We/I have enjoyed the pool at least twice a day. We were visited by a cat and some kittens which my daughter really liked. We ended up feeding them so they made an appearance at least twice a day. We enjoyed ice cream in Lucca at Yogurtmania, a lovely lunch time meal at il Fatty in Massa. Overall a very nice trip. Also the owner was particularly helpful when I left my phone in my room. He sent it back to me without any charge. Thank you so much.

Beautiful, quiet and relaxing

We stayed in this cottage for one week with our family of 6 children ranging from 9 months to 14 years. It's located a little way up the side of the mountain and accessed by a small, bumpy, gravel track which leads only to a fish-farm and the cottage itself. The views from the house were lovely and a short drive on up the mountain-side to Corfino gives you an even better view of the mountains and valleys surrounding the cottage. The house itself was indeed very rustic (complete with dust) but also very pleasant. There is plenty of space to sit at tables but there isn't really anywhere comfy to sit. The sofa bed seats 3 which wasn't really enough for us but we sat and ate on the terrace for most of the time anyway, enjoying the fresh air, scenery and beautiful weather which we were blessed with. The steep stone staircase gave us a little cause for concern given that we had a (very fast) crawling baby with us but our other children managed without any trouble. The bedrooms themselves were plenty big enough and comfortable. The swimming pool is fairly big and a constant 1.5m deep. Deep enough for the kids to jump in from the side without bumping on the bottom (not head first though!). It's not heated but it didn't need to be -- according to the thermometer it was about 26 degrees in there all week. Our children spent a significant amount of time in the pool (which was cleaned by the owner half-way through the week) and were very sad to leave it at the end of our stay! The pool area is enclosed so you can be sure that smaller children don't go wandering off and accidentally falling in. The big supermarket "Conad" in Gallicano is just like an English supermarket and open on Sundays which is very useful for a Saturday change-over. It's about 25 minutes drive from the house. But there are also two smaller supermarkets in Pieve Fosciana (10mins) which also have everything you could need. With Pisa (80mins), Lucca (60 mins), Florence (2 hours) and the sea (90 mins) all within day-tripping distance it is a good location but a car is essential. And don't forget the smaller mountain villages of Corfino and Castiglione which are only a 5-10 minute drive away.

peace and quiet

If you're looking for peace and quiet and mountainviews, don't look further. Rustico Brunello is as it says very 'rustico' and a great view of the mountains. For us it was to quiet. Brunello is a very nice and hospitable guy. We had bad luck with the weather.

Lovely house, great owner & great location.

The house and garden were lovely, really homely and relaxing. The pool was amazing with wonderful views, it was great for children as it was set slightly away from the house and fenced all round. Brunello the owner was very friendly and helpful, even providing fresh fruit and vegetables for us from the house garden. Great facilities including a dishwasher & washing machine. We'd love to come back and didn't want to go home!

A nature lovers paradise

Another Tuscan gem! This was our second visit to the Garfagnana area (its highly addictive). We had an amazing two weeks holiday. Don't be put off by the track road, its a bit rough but keep the speed down and you will find its worth it. I advise you take a torch though as we arrived late at night when the outside lighting wasn't on (its on a timer). The property and the pool were spotless. The house was spacious with a well equipped kitchen. Beds were comfy and bathrooms spacious and clean. Well maintained large garden with pond and fountain. Separate laundry area with washing machine. There are various restaurants in the area but we chose to do a big shop at E'Leclerc in Gallicano and eat on the terrace taking in the stunning views. However there is also an amazingly well stocked shop 5 mins from the property for essentials. The Thursday market in Castelnuovo is a must. The rotisserie chickens are yummy. If you want free wi-fi try the bar Centrale in the square in Castelnuovo a must for teenagers! Also in most bars if you ask for a panini you will get a wonderful sandwich costing very little to take away - we had a lot of picnics. Fortezza delle Verrucole is well worth a visit with English speaking tour guide. Every road seems to lead to a beautiful view but these were our favourites: Vagli, Roggio, Orecchiella, San Pellegrino in Alpe, Corfino and the trip to Grotto del Vento. Wildlife we encountered included wild boar, snakes, lizards, scorpions, wasps we called chinooks due to their size, beautiful butterflies, an array of different birds and incredible spiders. Again don't be put off they are as scared of you as you are of them! Brunello and his wife were very helpful and a house clean with fresh linen and towels was offered after our first week. Please be aware that the pool is not graduated and came up to my shoulders at both ends (I am 5ft 1inch tall) but it was perfect for two tall teenagers. Pool is gated for security. The pizza oven and BBQ were great fun with sink and tap and outdoor lighting. Not forgetting this the year that Andy Murray won Wimbledon which we watched in the Sports Bar in Castelnuovo. Also worth mentioning is twice we have tried to catch the cheese rolling at Orzaglia as recommended but we have never managed to see this. We fell in love with this property and would love to go back with friends.

A truly wonderful place

My family of 6 (4 children ageing between 13 and 8) stayed here at the end of August 2011 and what a fantastic holiday we had. The property is beautiful and the views stunning. It had everything you could ask for. The photos provided make it look attractive but they really don't do the place justice, when you get there you realise just how lovely it is! The location is remote but close enough (20-30mins away from a hpermarket) to restaurants, villages, towns etc. Lucca is about 70 mins drive away and Pisa airport about 90-120 mins depending on the time of day. There is a National Park with lovely walks close by and many beautiful villages, plus the Caves of Wind which is worth a trip. The property has a garden with play equipment for smaller children, a pond with fish and a turtle. The pool is unheated but at 24C water temp everyday, you didn't need it. There are 3 different dining options, a separate dining room, a dining table in the lounge or the outside dining area (which we used all the time, the views from here are spectacular). There is even a kind of serving hatch from the kitchen to outside, so you don't have to carry everything through the house. We met the owner Brunello and his daughter, he spoke excellent English and was very nice. We ate in a local restaurant in Pieve Fosciana called Il Pozzo, it cost about 77 Euros for 6 main courses, wine, water, coca cola and desserts. I would recommend as they were very accomodating, packed out with locals and the food was excellent, there is also a garden and a play area for children. All in all, we had a fabulous time and I would thoroughly recommend this accomodation to other families.

Rustico Brunello, Villa Collamandina

Rustico Brunello is in an absolutely idyllic setting, with beautiful views across the valley. The directions to the property were very precise and helpful and Brunello, the owner, made us feel extremely welcome. The house itself had all the facilities we needed, was very clean and well maintained and the barbecue/pizza oven house in the garden was a lovely addition. The fact that it was an isolated property in the hills suited us perfectly and added significantly to its charm, and if we hadn't wanted to do some visiting of the area we would have been more than happy to while away the hours by the pool, where there are loads of four-leaved clovers to be found! Even though the house is 'off the beaten track', the local town, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is only about a 15 minute drive away and there are very helpful staff at the Tourist Information Centre. For big grocery shopping we used the L'Eclerc at Gallicano, about 25 minutes away and for day to day shopping there is a super Coop at Pieve Fosciana, which is only about 10 minutes away. We loved visiting Lucca and of course Florence, and our flight times meant that we could spend all of our final day in Pisa. All in all, we had a wonderful time and would recommend this property whole-heartedly.
