Many bad situations in the property, which we will not rent again.

Several bad situations in the property give it a bad review. - two double beds, which we have not slept on for over several decades - both beds, which we had to use separately to be able to go to sleep, came off their platforms as we moved in the night. - bathroom had an antique tub on nice metal feet, but a worthless shower curtain. Only a hand held shower head, and curtains that only went on both sides, not across the head or foot of the tub. My one shower got the bathroom floor sort of flooded as water came out through the decorative openings at the top of the curtains and both the uncovered head and base of the tub. - lots of furniture from Morocco, which looked nice but was generally uncomfortable to sit on. - kitchen items were very lacking. Not 4 sets of plates, and not 4 sets of silverware that we could find. Coffee pot did not work, but they did replace it which was very nice. Overall, one of the worst places we have rented in years. Can't submit without clicking on one star, which it does not really deserve.

We wanted to love this place

The location was perfect for a visit to Portland. The wifi worked great. The host were friendly. The sheets seemed clean but the bed had an odor. The space is in a basement which we were fully prepared for - we were not prepared for the extreme dampness - odor and just feel. We even purchased a bag of charcoal in hopes it would absorb odor - it did help. There were a lot of large cobwebs. The extra bedding had large stains. We loved the look of the tub BUT - if you enjoy a shower expect most of the water to be on the floor - I had to adjust the shower curtain but even then with the eyelets water was everywhere. There are plenty of towels but some had a musty smell - others were freshly washed. The coffee pot is a basic simple to use coffee pot but after 10 minutes no coffee. There are 17 chairs in this rental 17 - we counted - and not one is comfortable! We sat on beds or on the floor - carpet seemed clean. We could not only hear the tv from above but understand it. We found it odd that there were instructions for the television - read them - you will need them. The mattress do no fit the frame and would fall if you moved too much. They have fixed the hot and cold water handles - I found out AFTER trying to run a bath with the cold... The grounds are lovely with lots to look at. We were out and about most of the time so this worked for us but there are some things that with an easy fix we would gladly return.

Unique, beautiful, dated

We stayed in the "garden level" apartment, which is essentially the basement of an old church parsonage. It is spacious, beautifully decorated, and certainly a unique property and basement. That said, the apartment is dark, and we felt like we were staying in a basement. The kitchen and bathroom are quite dated, and there is no dishwasher (contrary to the VRBO description). The bathroom has a european tub with curtains on two sides. If you stand to "shower" and hold the sprayer, the bathroom is inevitably soaked. The thermostat is in the upstairs living area, so we basement dwellers were at the mercy of the upstairs guests for temperature control. The owners were friendly and seemed genuinely interested in addressing our concerns. After the upstairs guests checked out, we were given access to the shower in that unit, which is modern and lovely. We'd consider the upstairs unit for a future stay, though it's considerably more expensive. We won't return to the basement.

Not As Expected

I am sharing this experience to help those travelers who, like me, were taken in by the photos, description, and rave reviews of this property. My son and I were booked for two nights, but stayed for only one and left as early as possible. The day before, we followed instructions and confirmed our arrival and were told the keys were on the table and to make ourselves at home. Despite this, the owner was taken by surprise that we were there and asserted that we owed her more money as we were a day early. It was up to us to contact the rental company and confirm that we were booked for two days and were expected. Things were off to such an awkward start that I left a message while downtown asking whether we were actually welcome to stay. The unit is in a suburb of Portland and is not ten minutes from downtown if you factor in city traffic. It is a basement apartment in an old building. It did have wifi and television, all of which worked well. There are antiques, as stated, and a garden. However it was also dirty, damp, and had spiders. There are exposed vents and pipes throughout. The renters above stayed up until 3 am and you could hear every footstep, toilet flush, and muffled conversation. They did laundry late into the night in the common hallway. We also had some concerns about the safety aspects of the unit. When we voiced our opinions/concerns the owner of this unit did not respond as one would expect. She was belligerent and insisted I was the only dissatisfied renter she'd ever had. Though only a few steps away, she did not come over to see what we spoke of; in fact we did not meet. Instead, our host resorted to name calling and suggested that if we did not like the unit we should leave, though she offered no refund. She deemed us to be people who could not be pleased under any circumstance. That is wholly untrue. My family has traveled all over the world and rented many times. As recently as last week we were in Arcata, CA and I left a rave review for that property on VRBO. This was a two week road trip and we were in various inns, rentals, and hotels and were pleased with each of them, with this one exception. It is impossible to convey the impact this had on us as travelers in a new city. It is important to consider all aspects before making travel decisions. I very much hope that anyone who takes a chance in renting this property fares better than we did.

What a wonderful quirky haven we found. This is the basement apartment of a 120 year old former church, now rightly known as the St. Jules church of the Perpetual Indulgence. The owner, Jules, has a marvelous sense of design so both this large apartment and the extensive gardens are packed with antiques and interesting objects, many collected from Morroco. Being in the basement we slept cool and comfortably even though it reached 102 degrees outside. It was also well appointed with pretty everything we could need. The only thing we truly lacked we're coasters :-] because we wanted to protect all the fabulous wood furniture! Very quiet and peaceful and we would love to return someday.

A beautiful experience.

We stayed in Apt#1, a basement setting. The apartment was carefully and beautifully decorated with real Moroccan artifacts and was both fun and mysterious and generally (see below) very comfortable. Our grandchildren loved seeing the bits. The garden stands alone. In the City of Roses, Julie's garden is a crown jewel. The basement apartment was a bit cold until we brought out a compact space heater that was available right in the apartment. (The chill factor is because we are of a certain age.) We are eager to rent again from Julie.

Unique property!

The coolest, most unique property we've had the pleasure of experiencing. The pictures are very accurate, but it's hard to convey how large and comfortable the space is. Very well situated for getting around all of Portland. Walk to the MAX train station that can take you practically anywhere downtown. Love the old claw foot tub. Our only regret was that the weather was sooooo splendid that we didn't spend as much time in the space as we anticipated. Julie, we'll definitely be back!
