About this property

Spacious child-friendly villa with private pool near the sea

Santa Rosalia is a family villa in the country with a large pool and garden. A lush Mediterranean garden is offset by a large pool 12 x 6 metres, surrounded by olive trees. You can relax on a sunbed by the pool under a beach umbrella or enjoy the view of the pool and garden from the vine-covered pergola in front of the villa.
There is outdoor table tennis in the shade by the pool. The main door to the villa takes you into a bright and airy sitting room leading into the dining room and then the kitchen. All three rooms look onto the front garden and the pool, while doors open onto a patio behind the house. Upstairs a long corridor accesses 4 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is a third bathroom downstairs. (An adjacent ground floor study with sofa bed may be rented as an optional fifth bedroom, particularly suitable for older guests.) The house is very spacious and has been recently refurbished to a high standard of comfort.
Close to the villa next door but completely secluded by a high wall and tall cypress trees, it has its own access road.

Mazara and beaches: Mazara, Italy’s major fishing port, has a charming promenade and three piazzas in the historic centre, graced with beautiful baroque churches and civic buildings - even the remains of a Norman castle. Don't miss the beautiful bronze statue of a dancing satyr, a masterpiece of Greek art rescued from the sea by a local fisherman and now housed in a dedicated museum. Away from the main squares is the kasbah, a maze of winding streets and miniscule piazzas dating from the Arab occupation of the island in the 9th and 10th centuries. Recently renovated this area is now dotted with attractive bars and restaurants open in the evening.
Beyond the town there is a long and beautiful coastline with both sandy beaches and rocky coves where the sea is exceptionally limpid. In July and August the beach of Tonnarella offers the facilities of bars with deckchairs and beach umbrellas to rent. Further afield is the famous white sandy beach of San Vito Lo Capo and the nature reserve of Lo Zingaro, which can be reached in just over an hour.

Sightseeing: The ancient Greek city of Selinunte by the sea is a 30 minute drive away. After exploring the ruins, go down to the nearby beach of Marinella, cool off in the sea and feast on delicious local fish at one of the seaside 'trattorie'. Half an hour in the other direction is the mysterious temple of Segesta, high up on a hill overlooking the valley. Nearby is the ancient Greek open air theatre, where performances of plays and concerts are held every summer.
In 20 minutes you can reach Marsala, famous for wine, where top quality wines can be savoured at various prestigious wineries. The Punic Ship salvaged from the sea nearby is on display at the Baglio Anselmi museum. The province of Trapani has been famous for salt production since Roman times and just beyond Marsala is a lagoon where salt is still produced. The picturesque windmills that once serviced the saltpans were built during the Spanish occupation of Sicily.
Take the ferry boat to the fascinating island of Mozia, once a Phoenician colony, with the Punic remains of the walls and city razed to the ground in the 4th century BC. Visit the Whitaker Museum with its star attraction of the Ragazzo di Mozia, a classical Greek marble statue of a young boy, which was found lying in the lagoon.
The medieval hilltop town of Erice, with its Norman castle, site of an ancient temple of Venus, is an hour's drive from Mazara. From Trapani or Marsala you can reach the lovely Egadi islands. Palermo, Sicily's exotic capital, and the Vale of Temples at Agrigento are easy day trips.

Mazara is a Mecca for people who like to eat - not the place to come if you are on a diet! It offers a wide range of excellent trattorias and restaurants, where you can savour the freshest seafood and fish, not to mention the delights of Sicilian traditional fare from fish couscous to melanzane alla parmigiana - aubergines baked with cheese, basil and tomato sauce In the manual you will find in the house, we recommend the very best of local restaurants, all of them dedicated to offering excellent Sicilian cuisine and at very reasonable prices. For families there are many low cost, child-friendly pizzerias on the lovely promenade beyond the city centre. They offer not only pizzas, but a very wide range of pasta, vegetable, meat, seafood and fish dishes. Those of you with a sweet tooth won't resist the pasticcerie - pastry shops - where you can buy mouth-watering delicacies, such as cassata, cannoli or almond pastries. or delicious ice cream. Remember Sicilian ice cream is the best!

A lovely villa and the perfect family holiday away

We absolutely loved our stay at Santa Rosalia! The villa was spacious and was the perfect week away for our a whole group. We stayed with another family so in the end had 5 children and 4 adults and we were all very comfortable. The pool was absolutely perfect and we spent most of our day there, but could easily pop into town for gelato in the afternoons or to the beach for a day out. We even had a delicious dinner cooked for us one evening all arranged by the property manager. On top of it all, the owner, Caroline was truly lovely. I can't recommend this villa enough if you're looking for a relaxing week away!

Enjoyable week for all of us in casa Rosalia

The house matched our expectation, based on the description. Very nicely decorated, and very clean and well equiped for our group, aged 65- 9 months. We all enjoyed the pool, and surrounding area. As coffee lovers we missed a well functioning coffe machine. The owner and Nanette were very friendly and helpfull and provided good advice.on local beaches and restaurants. We will surely recommend this place . One unpleasant disctraction was the lack of garbage removal in the surrounding area

Perfect for a peaceful family holiday!

Santa Rosalia is an idyllic villa set in beautiful surroundings, perfect for a peaceful family holiday. We recently returned from 10 days at Santa Rosalia. Our party included myself and my husband, both early 30s, plus our 7 month old and our friends, of a similar age, with their 10 year old son, 9 year old daughter and 10 month old son. When we arrived, we were completely overwhelmed at the size of the villa and gardens and amazed to learn that we had the whole space all to ourselves. There was more than enough space for all of us and no danger of feeling cramped or living on top of each other. The villa and pool were well maintained, with the pool cleaned every day, bedsheets changed and a light clean of the villa during our stay. Nanette, who lives next door, kindly waited up very late to greet us on the night we arrived and was extremely helpful and kind throughout our stay. Caroline, the villa owner, was so helpful before our visit. This was our first holiday with our son so I had lots of questions and she patiently answered all of them! Cots and highchairs were provided for the babies and there is a built in stair gate to stop any little escapees. We spent most of our days at the villa enjoying the pool. The main focus of our days was discussing what to have for dinner and then sourcing it – in true Sicilian style! However, I know there is a lot to discover locally and on our next visit – we will definitely be back! – we’ll set about exploring a bit more. A wonderful setting for a quiet, calm and very relaxing family holiday, we are all looking forward to returning again soon!

2 families visiting from Sweden July 2018

We had a very nice stay at villa santa rosalia and the info about the surrounding area with beaches and restaurants was helpful. The house was big and spacious. We did not use the livingroom because of the heat and no ac. The little ants liked the food so we could not keep bread on the kitchen counter for more than two minutes before they were everywhere. There could have been more waterglasses and wineglasses. We really liked the pergola and the swimmingpool but if we are 8 persons that want to sunbathe we also want 8 sunbeds.... and maybe one more umbrella, can be one smaller and one big. Carolines book and the history behind the villa was fun and interesting :-). We liked that there where so few tourists in Mazara del vallo and the beach tonnarella Was very nice. Overall we had a good stay but could need some small upgrades. Thanks from us :-).

Spacious and relaxing Sicilian family home

Having fallen in love with Santa Rosalia on our first trip three years ago we were eager to return to this beautiful villa. It didn't disappoint! A happy week spent swimming in the pool, enjoying the new sand pit, exploring the local area and having those daily conversations about what to have for dinner. Our party of adults and kids ranging from 3 to 14 all found something to enjoy and we've already decided we'll be back again, in three years’ time!

Beautiful house for a great relaxing holiday

We had a wonderful time in this house. The arrangements beforehand were already very promising: very well arranged by Caroline, with clear agreements, descriptions how to get there, details on things to do and even an offer to do some shopping for the first day. Also while we were there, we were very well taken care off by Nanette and her husband. We were a group of 8: 2 families with in total 4 children ages 5-9. The house was ideal for our company, as well as the pool, garden, terrace... The bedrooms were equipped with well functioning airconditioning, which we needed since it was very hot. Everything was very clean, both inside and outside, with the pool being cleaned every day. Highly recommended!

Our fantastic week at Santa Rosalia

From the very first moment (arriving late and tired) Nannette welcomed us warmly and we were immediately struck by the spaciousness and ambience of the villa. We were delighted by the villa's decor and we felt in a holiday mood from the very beginning. The private pool gave us hours of endless pleasure and we loved the villa so much we rarely ventured far. There was however several trips into Mazara for dinner and a day at the beach. There is was plenty of good quality baby equipment and cooking facilities - including 2 BBQs (which we made good use of). We couldn't have ask for a better holiday and would highly recommend a stay there.

Adults and children relax in amazing this setting

We have just had returned from a wonderful week staying at Villa Santa Rosalia with children aged 4 and 6. The villa was spacious, clean and tidy and set within beautiful surroundings of olive trees and vineyards. The pool was cleaned daily with easy steps access and warm enough so that the kids both really progressed well with swimming, 6yo could stand in shallow end. The owners Caroline and Marcello were interesting, friendly and welcoming and always available to help with any questions or directions and to take the kids to pick oranges from their orchard for fresh juice. The villa is well situated on the outskirts, but within 5 minutes of the historic centre of Mazara del Vallo(interesting historic centre to explore) and good places to eat. There is plenty to keep both children and parents interested and happily occupied for a week whether it be building sand castles on lovely beaches(within 10 minutes), to the incredible ancient Greek ruins of Selinunte with its breath taking views above the ocean or a boat visit to the Island of Mozia(more incredible Greek ruins) all within 45 minutes. Santa Rosalia offered the perfect place to both relax and explore and we would love to return.

Another glowing endorsement

Our views align with others reported on this site - spacious and stately villa, great & quiet location. There's a few things that we'd perhaps alter, but nothing that detracted from the quality of our week there. We were also lucky enough to meet and chat with owners Caroline & Marcello who were visiting from the UK. Apart from hearing various interesting and amusing bits about Sicily and its people, they dropped what they were doing and helped us out by organising a local mechanic when we had problems with our rent-a-car .... really nice people & excellent overall experience.

Wonderful stay at Villa Santa Rosalia.

From our first communication with Caroline everything about our stay at Santa Rosalia was hassle free. Caroline was prompt in responding to all of our queries and went out of her way to make sure we understood everything with regard to our stay. Our experience at Santa Rosalia was even more than we could have hoped. We were greeted by Caroline's family who kindly made us feel very welcome. We were shown around the villa and all we needed to know to make our stay comfortable was explained by Nanette and Silvio. Shortly after arrival, bedrooms sorted out, we were all relaxing around the gorgeous pool in the warm afternoon sun. The location was superb. Secluded and quiet, surrounded by beautiful trees and aromatic gardens the villa takes on an almost magical quality. Wonderful grocery stores nearby and Mazara del Vallo a ten minute drive away. Day trips to historical sites a convenient drive away, awesome beaches and wonderful restaurants filled our time. I have to say that the highlight of the holiday for me were the many hours spent at Santa Rosalia out at the pool, making wonderful meals from local ingredients in the beautiful kitchen and sitting around the outside dining table spending quality time with my family and friends. I will be returning soon and hope to make this a yearly family event. Many, many thanks to our hosts Caroline, Nanette and Silvio.

Scent, blooms and bliss in Western Sicily

We arrived at Santa Rosalia in mid June. It was an easy drive from Palermo airport and easy to find Santa Rosalia, just outside of the pretty port town of Mazara del Vallo. Santa Rosalia is a haven of peace and tranquility with the only other house in sight being that of the owners next door, but completely separate and barely visible. The garden was full of flowering bushes trained into standards, fig trees dripping with figs and well as marmalade orange and lemon trees (the owners left delicious jars of marmalade for us to try). Outside the front door were two hedges of rosemary that filled your senses when you walked out and were delicious on roast potatoes. The pool is surrounded by fragrant lavender and was cleaned every morning and was lovely for swimming or sitting and reading. The house is very comfortable, spacious and clean. We loved all the books, an eclectic collection, many about the history of Sicily and one about the history of the house and the Manzo family written by Caroline. The beds and mattresses were great and we all slept very well. We had one disabled person in our party and she was able to get around easily in the house and garden and slept in the downstairs bedroom. We had very few problems with the house, but when we did they were dealt with immediately. Our only wish was that the kitchen was had better lighting as we spent a lot of time cooking, but we loved the window from the kitchen to the outside dining area, that allowed us to pass out food and drinks. You can get fresh bread every morning from one of the many bakeries in Mazara del Vallo and the most delicious local fruits and vegetables that are very inexpensive. Our main disappointment was in the restaurants. We are a vegetarian family and it was difficult to find veggie options at many of the restaurants, particularly since pizza was “off” at lunch time, or out of season, even at pizzerias! The owners recommendations were far more reliable than those of trip adviser!! Mazara del Vallo is a perfect location for visiting western Sicily. This area is quieter and less touristy than other parts, but nevetheless there are incredible wonders to be visited within 90 minutes easy driving. These include the ancient temples of Selinunte, the temple quarry at Cave di Cusa that was abandoned during the building of one of the Temples because of attack by the Carthaginians, the salt pans of Trepani and ancient ruins of the Island of Pantaleo.

Great villa for family holidays

We had a great stay at this lovely family villa, well equipped for little ones and toddlers. Caroline was really helpful in the booking process and arranged for a small shop to be ready and waiting for us upon arrival which was fantastic. There is plenty of room indoors and outdoors, and the pool is a great spot to hang out in the sunshine; clean, well maintained, with plenty of comfy seating. Within 25 - 45 minutes drive we found some beautiful beaches to visit, hopefully we will be back one day to explore more!

Spacious family-friendly villa

The property was as described on the website, spacious, comfortable and in a peaceful rural location, but not far from Mazara. It suited the seven of us (three generations) very well. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all of a good size and the downstairs could easily have accommodated a larger party. The kitchen was roomy and well-equipped. The fenced, salt water pool was a hit with everyone. There were plenty of sunloungers and space around the pool for sunbathing. The surrounding garden with olive and fruit trees was well-maintained and charming. We could look out on to it from the shade of the vine-covered pergola in front of the kitchen window. This is where we ate most of our meals. My husband and I investigated the nearby towns and sites, while the young family headed for the beaches of Tonnarella, Tre Fontane, Granitola and Marinella. These were busy, but then we had chosen the week which included the national holiday of Ferragosto (many shops etc were closed on this day). Caroline's house information pack was very helpful and included suggestions for trips and restaurants. I know that Nanette would have given us more help and advice had we needed it. She and Silvio were most welcoming (we arrived very late) and it was reassuring to have them on hand, especially as we managed to lock ourselves out of the house. I started reading a (house) copy of Caroline's book and found it interesting, giving fascinating details about Sicily in general, as well as about the house and the Manzo family. I have ordered a copy so that I can finish the story. I would especially recommend Santa Rosalia/Santa Maria to anyone who values a peaceful and spacious location. PS. Santa Maria olive oil is DELICIOUS!

Beautiful surroundings very well equipped Villa

9 of us stayed at the Santa Rosalia, comprising of two families with children ranging from 3 through to 16. What a fantastic place, plenty of space, beautiful grounds and the swimming pool was used on a daily basis by children and adults! The villa is spacious, clean and superbly equipped with everything you could possibly need (I went home with clean washing thanks to the washing machine!!). Ideal location should you wish to use it as a base to explore the beautiful island or alternatively just relax by the pool. Nanette and Sylvio were fantastic whilst we were there, meeting us at the villa despite a late flight arrival and arranging for a food shop to keep us going until we could reach a supermarket. Caroline's book is fascinating and the advance tips provided regarding the area, places to eat etc was really useful to help plan the holiday. Cafe Garibaldi is a must visit for food in the town, two lovely Italian ladies with little English but must welcoming and even my limited Italian was sufficient to enjoy a beautiful meal. Highly recommended, we will be back!!

A little slice of secluded Sicilian heaven.

Villa Santa Rosalia is absolutely beautiful and a perfect holiday retreat to spend with family and friends. I am newly returned from a two week holiday with my family and it was wonderful. I remember from the moment we pulled into the drive way with it's beautiful garden and gazed up at the Villa we all 'oohed' and 'aahed'. The highlights for me were the two swimming pools (yes two...spoilt for choice), dining out under the stars in the orange orchard and breakfast every morning under a canopy of cool, sheltered vines. Bliss. One swimming pool in particular (which is directly opposite Santa Rosalia round the back of the villa) is surrounded by jasmine and lavender. Gorgeous. The air is filled with different aroma's and herbs. As you enter the front door to Santa Rosalia you are immediately welcomed by the warm hit of rosemary. Lemon and orange trees are a plenty here. It was wonderful to pick your own and use it to cook with or serve in many a drink. (Ahem.) Santa Rosalia is large, spacious, clean, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. Each bedroom (5 in total with 3 bathrooms) has air conditioning which was greatly appreciated at night time. The supermarket (Eurospar) was approximately a 5/10 minute drive down the road and Nanette kindly showed us the way on our first day so we knew where to go. We had ice cream, every day, twice a day for the whole holiday. Simply delicious! I cannot recommend Santa Rosalia enough to those who would love a peaceful holiday and want the time to read, unwind and eat stunning Sicilian food. If this is what you are after, you are in for a treat.

A wonderful place for a holiday for all ages

We are a family of four who live near Chicago and decided on Sicily for our summer holiday, picking up my mother from England en route. We decided on staying one week on the east side of the island, flying into Catania and one week on the west leaving from Trapani. We picked Santa Rosalia because of the photos on the website and the wonderful reviews. Our first week we rented a house through a villa company which paled in comparison to our week in Rosalia. This Villa is a perfect place to have your vacation. It has all that you need, wonderful hosts to help you if you need them and everything you might want a short drive away. I was a little tentative about booking through VRBO but once I started to liase with Caroline I felt 100% confident that it would all be as described and it was. We had a 13,16 and 84 year old with us and found there was something for everyone both at the villa and nearby area. Mum loved sitting outside painting,my daughter loved the pool and my son the tennis. We found a fabulous beach about half an hour away (there are closer ones) that suited us all with snorkeling, soft sand, beach umbrellas for Granny and a wonderful restaurant and nice clean toilets for all. Mazara provided us with shops ,restaurants, history and scuba diving. I felt we had much better value for our week here than we did when renting through an agency who only seemed interested in taking our booking. If it wasn't so far away I would go back regularly as it was such a relaxing, enjoyable week. My recommendations: Book a meal for the day you arrive,it was wonderful and so nice to have without preparing after traveling, read Caroline's book before you go or whilst you are there, allow lots of time for Selinunte,it is majestic, bring back some ceramics from the shop in Mazara the family recommends (can't remember the name) and if you go to east side of island don't miss Cave Grande if you like hiking and nature!

Completely perfect

This is an incredible place, and a very simpathetic atmosphere, we were surprised at the feeling of space with the garden and olive groves. The house felt a lot bigger than the photographs on the web site. All the recommendations from the owner were spot on, interesting books on the shelves , a beautiful Italian kitchen , everything was very clean . We were 9 people of different ages, we all loved it.

A great relaxing stay

We spent 3 wonderful weeks at the Villa. Despite our late arrival due to a luggage problem, we were warmly welcomed by Nanette who showed us around and had arranged a cold meal for us. We appreciated finding everything to start our stay in good conditions, as we could go shopping only the day after. We found the house even bigger than on the pictures. It's very comfortable, nothing's missing inside to our opinion. The garden is beautiful and well kept. So is the pool. Our kids had a lot of fun there. We highly recommend this villa. Many thanks to Nanette and Silvio for being so nice and helpful during our stay.

Santa Rosalia is ideally situated in north-west Sicily for day-trips to a variety of destinations. We went scuba-diving and snorkelling at Scopello, visited temples at Agrigento and Selinunte and took a ferry to the lovely Egardi islands where we hired bikes and chose our own beaches and rock-pools to swim from. The house itself has a dining area just outside the kitchen, shaded by vines, and the garden has pomegranate, fig and lime trees. The pool is a blessed distance from the house - easily visible, but far enough for you to feel that you are having some child-free time. The real charm of the house, though, is provided by Caroline's book, Casa Nostra, a chronicle of her relationship with the house and the tumultuous fortunes of the once-wealthy Sicilian family which own it. With tales of massive family parties, the intricacies of buying the freshest fish from the market to the annual labour of making vats of home-made tomato sauce, the book imparts a sense of what it is to be Sicilian. Caroline's sister-in-law, Nanette, is the perfect person to welcome you - quiet, warm and extremely helpful. We didn't need much help but it was good to know that she and her husband were nearby. We booked a cooked supper for our arrival, a delicious traditional Sicilian dish which kept us going through lunch the next day as well.

Holiday in Sicily

We stayed at Santa Rosalia at the end of August and the first 4 days of September. We were very grateful to Caroline to let us stay the extra few days as we coudn't squeeze in a 2 weeks holiday. The villa was as others say spotless, very spacious and perfect for relaxing either under the olive trees, in the pool or in the evening under the pegoda barbecuing.. Our 2 teenage chidlren enjoyed the villa very much and appreciated the internet link! We loved being very near to all that we needed in Mazara but in the piece and quiet; we used a number of the ersurant recommendations which were very useful and explored a little but just soaked up the wonderful Sicilian ciulture.

I am a long term Siculophile. Married to Marcello,
a Sicilian, I have been coming here for forty years.
Marcello had already inherited the villa next door, when this villa came on the market.
We loved the grounds and the space and enhanced it with a makeover inside and a swimming pool.
I have written about our Sicilian family in my book
"Casa Nostra. A Home in Sicily" published in 2007.
Since then we have been living in London but we come to this villa every year with our two daughters and their small sons.

Why they chose this property

Santa Rosalia formerly formed part of the estate next door belonging to Marcello and his brothers.
It has beautiful gardens with palms and ancient olive trees planted when Marcello was a child. Every year there is an olive harvest at this villa and the villa next door, Santa Maria. Guests of Santa Rosalia may sample our extra virgin olive oil which is so good that it deserves a category all of its own.

What makes this property unique

The huge gardens set well away from the road afford a unique level of privacy while the fenced pool within view of the shaded pergola make keeping an eye on the children easy. There is so much space in the gardens that children are ever occupied, picking fruit, playing in the sand pit or chasing lizards!
Grownups can socialise under the vine covered pergola or retire to a bench in the shade of an ancient olive tree. The pool is surrounded by lavender bushes and olive trees and with its extensive shallow end is very child-friendly.
We also keep all sorts of inflatable toys and waterbeds with children in mind.
In side the house the large open plan living room has plenty of seating and a wide range of book for both adults and children.
