About this property

Your Balboa Island Vacation Magic!

Perfect vacations are about relaxation and comfort, and traveling to another place and time- and there is no place like our Island-Time home on Balboa Island for your perfect vacation! Any time of year, our newly renovated 1930 family beach home will take you to the relaxation that comes with living on Island Time. Three bedrooms upstairs provide flexible accommodations for up to six people with a Queen bed in one, a Full Size bed in the second, and two Twin beds in the third. The original hardwood floors have been refinished and the period-correct flooring restored. All bedrooms have ceiling fans and feature ample closet space for storage. In the upstairs bathroom we retained the original cheerful yellow tiles and full size tub. Downstairs is a fully equipped kitchen with gas stove and oven, a microwave, coffee maker/coffee grinder, blender, toaster, and all utensils and service for 8+. Also, downstairs is the comfortable and airy living and dining area with our original brick and wood-paneled fireplace, couch, and bay-window seating. The downstairs bathroom features vintage tile and the original built in cabinets and shower. Phone service with unlimited long distance, flatcreen cable TV and music, Roku, a DVD player, and wireless internet are all provided. Fronting the bay windows is a small patio in for people-watching and/or romantic sunset cocktails, while the large back yard garden and patio provides a private, personal area equipped with a gas fired barbeque for outdoor dining and relaxing with your family. The back yard also provides a convenient place to store your rafts and water toys. There's even a sand area in the yard for the children to play in while you barbeque, and an outdoor shower to rinse off with after a day at the beach.

Summer and the Thanksgiving-to-New Year's Holidays can be a busy time at the beach, and our off-street at-your-doorstep driveway relieves you of the stress of looking for a parking space, and the new high efficiency washer and dryer in the laundry room mean you can spend your time at the beach or enjoying your holiday with family instead of waiting for your clothes at the Laundromat. Note- Our Island Time home is licensed and permitted by the city of Newport Beach to be your vacation get-away: Business License # BT30036171. Short Term Lodging Permit # SLP11531. Aloha!

very much enjoyed our stay
We very much enjoyed the stay. The house is exactly as presented. Be aware that the bathroom upstairs has a tub, not a combination tub/shower, so if you're not inclined to take a bath, it functions more like a half-bathroom. It's also between two bedrooms, so it can't easily be used by whoever is in the third bedroom. Peter and his local agent were very responsive.

Island Time
Wonderful stay at Island time. The house had everything we needed for the week. Our host was amazing. He even provided sand toys for our great niece who spent the first night with us. We enjoyed a pleasant ocean breeze & mild temperatures while inland was sizzling. Only down side was a parking ticket. We were warned & it is posted clearly, Monday is street sweeping day. My fault completely for not paying attention. It was so convenient to walk everywhere on the island. Mahalo for sharing this paradise.

Wonderful stay in Balboa!
Peter's house was the perfect home base for our group of five! It was clean, organized, and we were especially pleased by how much storage space there was. It came ready to go with sheets and towels, and it had a beautiful patio in the backyard that we loved to relax in. There was even a peach tree that Peter invited us to pick ripe peaches from! The location was great - close to the main street shopping area, but not so close that it was noisy. We would definitely stay here again on our next Balboa trip!

Close to the Irvine Ranch Market, Pavilions, and Rite-Aid. Scenic spot for staying in place during the Covid-19 lockdown. Enjoyed the quiet neighborhood and easy exercise walking loop around the island.

We have rented several houses in Balboa over the past 15 years and by far this was our favorite!
Great location, clean, storage, outdoor areas def a must for next year. The patios are much bigger and accessible than appear in pictures. Loved the outdoor space and gas barbecue. The rooms have a lot of storage which is so nice for a week long stay with kids. Fans in each room and plenty of screens! Loved it! Thank

cute house with big back yard for 6 people
we had spent quite a long time in this house in balboa island. This house and this place has given us many beautiful memories and experiences that we can hardly forget. This house is one of the historical building in the island. It is built in 1930s. But it is carefully maintained. Everything runs good, fast internet access, variety of kitchen wares, good washer and dryer, spacious living room and clean and soft beds. living in such a carfully maintained house can be interesting and comfotable. I especially like the backyard, where lemon trees and other beautiful plants are growing. And girls like to pickup fresh lemons while boys like to play in the sandpit in the backyard. The location is also great. minutes to the busy main street and the sand while keeping privacy. The place is safe and beautiful with nice neighbors, we can walk at night and enjoy the peace. The house owner is really nice and keep caring for our needs, it is easy to communicate with such a nice guy. We love this house and this place. If we have a chance, we will definitely visit here again.

Balboa island charm with a yard, it was awesome!
Our stay was great! Have been spending summer vacations on Balboa Island on and off for 38 plus years. September 2016 on Ameythyst was one of the best! Two minute walk to Marine ave. (The main drag) with all the great restaurants and island shops. THREE houses from the water, and about a 5 min walk over the bridge to a great Pavillions supermarket with a awesome meat department to take advantage of the great kitchen and new BBQ! It is an historical society house which means old and cool, it is very clean and well kept! The owner and property manager are great! Disneyland, Knotts Berry farm, Catalina are right there, and just a 60 min.drive to LA with no traffic ha ha! Will be back in summer of 2017 for more great times!

Old School Balboa Island Charm
We were at the tail end of a house remodel and intended to stay here a week. But as many house remodel delays go, we stayed here for a full month. We REALLY liked this house. It worked well for our family of five (16, 14, and 10 year old kids). It has beach cottage charm. Everything worked great. Below is a quick list of pros and cons: Pros: Clean and beautiful and everything worked Parking (driveway) - This cannot be overstated. You can usually find a spot on the street but with two cars it was nice to know that there was always a spot for one of us to park in the driveway. Backyard - This is one of the few houses on the island with a full size backyard. We celebrated a birthday in the backyard with 19 people and it was great. Location - It is only three houses from the beach. We were able to transport our kayaks and paddle boards to the beach with relative ease. It is also only two blocks from main street and convenient for after dinner Balboa Bar/Frozen Banana runs. Last, the location makes it pretty easy to get on and off the island pretty quickly. Owner/Manager - We had a few correspondences with both the owner and property manager. They are both wonderful and accommodating. Cons (these were not a big deal for our family but they are worth noting): Stairs - The stairs are moderately narrow. However, they have handrails on either side that make it easier to get up for us older folks. Bathroom - There are two bathrooms. There is one bathroom upstairs that is a jack and jill bathroom to two bedrooms. That bathroom only has a bathtub (no shower). The bathroom downstairs has a shower and it is a good shower. In conclusion, we loved this house. It still has the beach cottage feel. It is not a ritzy house with sub zero refrigerators and viking ovens. However, it is clean, comfortable, and an overall great place.

Lovely Island Vacation
We rented this wonderful historic beach home on the island this summer for the first time. It has a huge backyard that has a funky Hawaiian feel to it with palm trees, lemon and lime trees. The grill is big and new and there is a sand area for kids to play in while you barbecue and have fun. It was terrific for the 4th of July. We loved it. It has been well kept for an older home and everything is clean and the fans are fantastic and very quiet. We have been coming to the island for 50 years so we have a deep love for it. This home just fits the feel of the old Balboa. We will definitely be renting again because the price is right for this home which is just a couple of houses done from the north bay front beach. And situated a couple of streets over from the Main Street with its restaurants made it a perfect place. Especially when you have a craving for a balboa bar at night before walking the island. The owner is just great to work with.

About the host

Hosted by Peter Leinau

Host profile image
I was born here and raised in this house. As you can imagine, I spent much of my childhood on the beaches or in the water and grew up with a love for the out-of-doors. Studies and degrees followed in biology, natural resource management, and education and I have spent my career teaching and sharing my enthusiasm for science and nature with others around the state. When my family and I are not enjoying 'Island Time' on Balboa Island we currently live and work in the Sierra Nevada near Yosemite National Park.

Why they chose this property

My grandparents built our beach home in 1930. My mother made it our permanent home when she married my Dad in 1952, and now our daughter is the fourth generation looking forward to her Island Time as much as I do. Although the mainland is in the 21st century, when I am on the island I can find myself back in the earlier, easier times. Whether it's coffee with the birds in the garden and an AM walk around the island or kayaking the bay at sunset, I know the Aloha of Island Time will find you as well.

What makes this property unique

Many of the vintage beach homes are gone, and with them the casual Aloha of old Balboa Island. We have chosen to renovate our home and retain that spirit for us all to enjoy! Steps away from the beach and the shops of Marine avenue, yet just off the waterfront bustle enough to provide a sense of relaxation and serenity, here you can truly be on vacation on Island Time. Most of the vacation rentals have multiple units: a front unit, a back unit, an upstairs unit...Here you are home upstairs, downstairs, front patio, and backyard garden/ patio/ play area- It's all yours to enjoy in the Island style.
