Family christmas

The property is on a secluded dirt road in a rustic area. The fact that it's pet friendly was amazing. We walked the snowy trails, had I thought about it I would have brought my snowshoes. The heaters are a little loud but the cabin had a nice cozy feel.

Wonderful and unique place

We stayed at the Creekside Cottage which was a good size for the six of us. There is a huge screen porch on the back. We were able to grill our own food one night on the very nice gas grill. My grandsons loved the heated pool. The grounds were beautiful. The chickens and ducks were fun to watch. We opted in for breakfast two mornings and the food was exceptional!

Relaxing getaway

We couldn't be happier with our stay! It's a piece of country life close to the city. Heated pool for year round fun. Hiking trails along the river and through the wooded acreage were enjoyable and not harsh. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi tub in our bathroom every day. The breakfasts were unique and exceptional! Loved them! We had a fire going in our fireplace the whole time we were there. Local restaurants were great for lunch/dinner and drinks. We also took a walk on the beach which was only a mile away from the farm! Eric and Julie were great hosts! Thank you for opening up your farm to us! Jimmy and Krista

First taste of life outside quarantine bubble, and it was delightful

As a stressed-out covid scaredy cat, I feared that our first foray beyond our carefully constructed bubble in Chicago would be a disaster. Well I'm happy to report that we had a splendid time at this Creekside Cottage in Berrien County, MI. The cottage is lovely, with plenty of space for our 4 adults and 2 dogs. My favorite place is next to the large table on the screened-in porch overlooking the hill down to the creek, where there's lots of space for folks to sit and listen to the forest, commune with friends and dogs, practice yoga, nap, whatever :-) Our farm-to-table breakfasts were delicious. Our walks through the woods (with and without dogs) were slow and healing. There's a bike in the shed to fit most frames, and lots of watercraft down by the river. Remember to bring your favorite bug spray and use it liberally. Sure, we saw some ticks, but they were woozy from our multi-layered defenses --> for human skin and dog fur: natural repellent; for human outerwear: we used the spray bottles of permethrin that were placed all about the property. For dogs: we gave them one of those systemic anti-tick/flea medicines. And one dog is on chemotherapy for cancer. The ticks had no chance against us. Make reservations for restaurants - not all are open yet, so the lines can be long on any day, especially if you want to be outside. And bring sun block! I saw a lot of sunburned people out there. I think they would have eaten inside if it weren't covid times. While there, we actually ate at our first Indoor Restaurant post-pandemic in New Buffalo -- all in our group are vaccinated -- and it was amazing! So freeing to eat together indoors without fear. When we ate outside, it was because that's what we chose. Long story short, Julie and Eric are exceptional hosts, and Creekside Cottage within Goldberry Woods is spectacular. Great time had by all.

Lovely winter retreat

Our family spent a couple of nights during winter break at the property. While in many ways, the area caters to summer visitors, we still had a lovely winter retreat. In particular we enjoyed warming up in the hot tub as well as by the fireplace. Additionally, the kids and dog enjoyed playing in the creek behind the house and we all enjoyed exploring the woods. While there is an inn and other cottage on property, we still felt like it was a retreat...we were actually (pleasantly) surprised how few other people we saw on site. Would recommend for those looking to get retreat while being able to enjoy a great set of amenities.

Wonderfully secluded spot for friends and family to gather.

The location is perfect if you want to "get away." Quiet, peaceful and secluded. Pool and hot tub were extremely clean. House was comfortable enough for two families of 4. Back screened in porch is a huge bonus given the mosquitoes. Only (minor) negative was the overgrowth of some of the vegetation. Other than that we loved our stay! Owners are VERY responsive and definitely care that their guests have an enjoyable stay.

Cute and fun getaway with the kids.

It was a great place to stay during COVID-19 to social distance in a new setting. Fun times with the bikes, hot tub, chickens and play ground. Disappointed they did not do anything to replace the breakfasts we had to miss. Felt there should have been a safe replacement or discount.

Antique shops and Breweries!

First part the property is a wonderful little get away in the woods but still miles from so so many things. The property although maybe a shared property (pool, hot tub, kayaks, trails) there’s plenty of room and area for many activities. There are chickens, ducks and a cute free roaming dog that are on the property.. so one another thing that doesn’t cause an issue but something to consider when planning a stay. The home owners were very sweet and very welcoming upon our welcoming. They offer a ton of board games, movies, and unlimited firewood. The property have many kayaks, cannons and bikes that anyone is welcome to use. 30 acres of land to explore with woods and trails and even old artifact artwork along the walk. Now for the surrounding area a short drive south to downtown new buffalo offers breweries, board walk, beaches and shops. Heading north offers even more beautiful beaches and gorgeous Lake Michigan views. At least 24 antique shops are in the surrounding area with amazing finds. With a dozen breweries, even more antique shops and all that Lake Michigan has to offer this was a great relaxing getaway!

About the host

Hosted by Julie and Eric Haberichter

Host profile image
Julie and Eric Haberichter are looking forward to welcoming you to Goldberry Woods. We are college sweethearts who both became engineers. We honeymooned at a B&B in Hawaii which was a working flower farm. After that experience, we have continued to stay at bed & breakfasts whenever we get the chance. We also vowed that someday we would become innkeepers ourselves.

Julie spent eight years working in processed food plants. Soon after the birth of our first daughter, Julie decided to stay home and has spent ten years raising our three lovely girls. With Eric’s support, she began to build a home around the idea that homemade was best made. Inherited and found items became integrated into the family’s décor. A family garden supplied the basis of our from-scratch meals. She decided that she no longer wanted to return to a career in processed foods but that she was ready to share her hospitality and love of food with guests.

The Haberichters lived in the busy Chicago suburbs but began spending every possible moment vacationing in Harbor Country. On a family vacation in 2011, we stumbled across the old River’s Edge B&B in Union Pier. The property was close to the beach with beautiful woods and enough pasture to create a bio-diverse micro farm. It included two summer cottages and an Innkeeper’s House so that our young family would have a bit of private space.

We are so in love with Harbor Country, and we are just dying to share it with you!

Why they chose this property

Goldberry Woods Cottage is located just one mile from Lake Michigan. However, our 30 secluded acres offer a bit of quiet amongst the bustle of Harbor Country's busy summers. An entire day can be spent just on our property, kayaking or canoeing in the Galien River or hiking our trails. Explore our organic farm, which grows a little bit of everything that Michigan has to offer. Fall and Winter are also a great time to visit!

What makes this property unique

Secluded, private, quite property with orchard, microfarm, and woods literally right out your door. Views of ravine and creek in back. Cottage offers wood-burning fireplace, jacuzzi bath, full kitchen with breakfast bar, laundry room, large TV with Blu-ray/DVD player, and large children's play structure. Can also add breakfasts in inn for additional charge, depending on availability.

Very close to fantastic restaurants, wineries, microbrews, an organic distillery, botanical gardens, art studios, antique shops, a large casino, outlet shopping, golf, and of course the beaches and dunes along Lake Michigan!

We also off our Goldberry Woods inn as a vacation rental (full use of inn and kitchen, but no breakfasts) for your larger group (sleeps 16-24+ people). Call for details!
