Canceled on the day of arrival
I booked this property 2 months prior to our stay--paid in full and received a booking confirmation. I own my error: the # of guests defaulted back to 1 at some point and I didn’t catch it. It should have been 5. However, the listing says up to 10 with no minimum guest amount. On the DAY OF ARRIVAL (I was mid-flight), I received a VRBO message and voicemail stating that our stay is cancelled. Exact message from the host: "this reservation was no approved. we dont rent a 5 room house to one adult!" I clarified that there were 5 of us. No response. They proceeded to blame me for being unresponsive to multiple outreach attempts. I checked VRBO messages, email, and phone messages (including blocked numbers and spam). The only attempts were on the day of arrival, and the VRBO desk confirmed there were no earlier outreach records. After the initial communication the host stopped responding to me directly.At no point was there an apology/ownership/compassion from the host. Only blame and an excuse that didn’t feel legitimate. Cancellations the day of arrival can really impact travel plans and lives. My team was there for a national event and I was celebrating a milestone. VRBO did provide a refund credit (that comes with extra work), but there were not a lot of alternatives in the area that met our needs. It all could have been avoided by earlier contact, or at least softened with an apology.
