Lakefront Cottage - private dock, large decks, large fire pit

Your family and friends will love this lakefront retreat on the shores of Watchic Lake! Enjoy lazy afternoons on the water with the help of a private dock, shaded decks.

This 4 bedroom home is located directly on the lake. It is great for swimming, fishing, floating, or just sitting by the fire pit and relaxing. In the winter you can enjoy ice skating, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

The main level is an open concept living area combining the dining, kitchen, and living room. There are two large bedrooms on the second floor. The master bedroom has a private balcony. The other room contains a full and twin size bed. There are two small bedrooms in the basement (one does not have a window) and another cozy family room.

We have a selection of games and DVDs for rainy days or nights at home. Light a fire in the fire pit near the water and enjoy views of the lake

Just twenty miles from Portland International Jetport. 35 minutes to Funtown/Splashtown and 40 minutes to Old Orchard Beach. North Conway NH and outlet shopping make for a nice midweek day trip.

Fall leaf peeping, the Fryeburg Fair, hiking and biking are all within a close proximity. Winter rentals provide access to ITS trails and bountiful ice fishing.

***Please note this home is in close proximity to adjacent neighbors. Some neighbors have been known to throw parties and play loud music on the weekend.***

A great week!

We ended up having wonderful weather and took full advantage of the lake, kayaks, bbq grills, and fire pit. All the things were there for us to reconnect and make memories with family! The blow up cobra floatie created a lot of laughs!!

Comfortable base

We used this house as our base for a weekend wedding nearby. Our needs were simple and this house was a comfortable place to sleep and eat our breakfast. If we wanted more ambitious meals, the kitchen would have served us well.

August Family Week at the Lake

The Loon’s Nest worked out very well for our family of eight. The kitchen is up-to-date and well stocked with dishes, utensils, and pots and pans. The refrigerator is huge. The deck off the main level was great for reading, grilling, and outdoor meals. The upstairs bedrooms were very comfortable and each has a private bath which was really nice. The bedrooms on the lower level are quite small but workable. The bathroom on the main level has the only indoor shower, but the outdoor shower is wonderful. The waterfront area was great. We enjoyed the dock which is roomy enough for chairs and has stairs to access the lake. The raft was nice for swimming and fishing. The huge deck near the water has plenty of tables and chairs and a beach umbrella. There is also a small screened sunroom with couches and a small refrigerator. The sunroom was a perfect place to go for peace and quiet. Other reviews mentioned how close the neighbors are and how noisy they can be. Our experience was that it was noisy and crowded on the weekend but after that it was super quiet. The lake was nice for kayaking and we enjoyed watching and listening to the loons.

Almost perfect with a beautiful view

We had a wonderful time staying at Loon’s Nest. The view of Watchic Lake was beautiful from the dock. We loved the white Christmas lights that went all the way down. The large deck and fire pit had plenty of seating and we spent a ton of time just sitting on the dock. The kitchen was well-stocked. The living room was comfortable and we enjoyed the decks on all the floors. Communication with the hosts was easy and efficient. Our son loved having the Wii, board games and a great dock to swim from. We also appreciated the thorough instructions/info binder. The neighbors are very, very close, but friendly. But there isn’t a lot of privacy if that is what you’re looking for. The sunroom wasn’t the cleanest- we ended up mainly using the deck/grill instead. The only other cons for us were no A/C (it was really hot the first few days of our stay), no washer and dryer and only one tiny shower on the first floor. We would definitely recommend Snickerdoodles for breakfast/lunch (there’s a river with a picnic area right before you get there that’s great to eat at!). It was also an easy drive into Portland and to the coast to see the lighthouses (35-45 min). Overall a great stay! ❤️

Amazing

The pictures do not to this home justice! It was absolutely beautiful. Perfect place for a weekend getaway. The fire pit was a great way to spend the night, there was even a pile of wood we used (after drying it out for a bit). The neighbors were very friendly and did not bother us / get upset with the music playing for the majority of the weekend. Highly recommend this property!

Exactly what we needed!

We were looking to spend a week relaxing and swimming and enjoying family time and that's exactly what we got. Having only one bathroom was a bit of a challenge but really not a huge deal. The owners were super helpful with our questions. We would definitely go back and rent again.

Comfortable Camp

Very comfortable, homey camp. Wonderful lakeside dock, perfect for swimming and boating. There was an shallow area for 3-year old to play in, too. Large deck with grill near the water was lovely for cocktails and dinner. The wifi was excellent. The property was as described. Neighbors are close but friendly.

Great lake getaway spot close to Portland

Clean lake with friendly neighbors and a roomy house made this a comfortable place for our week long vacation. The deck area by the waterfront was in particularly nice with lots of seating, a huge grill and a cabana with a mini fridge. The local lake association was great too with helping us to out in our sunfish and small boat.

Our week on Watchic

Overall we had a great week on Watchic lake! The water is so clean and the house fit the amount of people we vacationed with. The house had most of what we needed. All the beds were very comfortable, the amount of decks were very accommodating. We spent most of the time on the dock and floating on the water! We loved that there were access to the paddle boat and kayaks. A few things to be mildly critical of, I just wish we could have checked in prior to 4pm, that there was a second bath (although the outdoor shower was nice), and the couch was a little cleaner. The owner was good at communication. Otherwise, we had a great time and would recommend to others!

Family getaway

The house was clean and quaint. The property was lovely leading to the beautiful lake view. It was so peaceful and quiet. A great getaway! Couple of notes, the DVD player did not work and screen doors were off it’s hinges. Limited hot water. Difficult not to track sand into the home even with leaving shoes at entrance.

Great place on the lake!

We had everything we needed to relax on the lake! The owner is very responsive. We used the paddle boat and kyack! Great time roasting marshmallows at the campfire, and plenty of outdoor space to enjoy.

We had a great time at this place. Good location. Clean. Comfortable. Would have really liked to experience all this place has to offer in the summer months. But it still kept us warm in April.

Great place to unwind.

Place was great. Neighbors on right as you look at lake were cool. Party animals. Neighbors on the left threatened to call the cops on us. So a mixed bag. Overall it was a great time

Spacious and Accomodating; Overall Amazing!

I stayed at Rob's property with a group totaling 10 people. Although we never actually met face to face, he was available by phone or email at any point. The house had ample space to accommodate the large group size between the four bedrooms and available couch space. Beyond that, I'll try to be brief; the summer house / oversized patio / fire pit / dock / water are all amazing. The pictures don't really do the property justice for the amount of fun that can be had in a variety of ways. The house is cozy, but keep in mind there is no central A/C, so it can get pretty warm in the summer. Thankfully, the nights were relatively cool, there's a number of box fans available to circulate air, and windows are abundant. Standish itself isn't much to see if you're touring, but a 35 minute drive from Portland (actually a really nice, small port city) makes it a great location. We also drove to Boston for a day (~2.5 hours), as well as Acadia National Park (~3.5 hours). All-in-all, it was the perfect location for my group's needs for the 4th of July. I would definitely recommend staying here, and look forward to again should I ever return to Maine.

Perfect Spot

This house was just perfect for a group of friends and I looking to explore the Portland area. We wanted somewhere outside of town for a bit more privacy than the city would entail. The house was very clean and comfortable. The central living area made for a comfortable spot to relax and enjoy our time. The outside area in the backyard was very nice - we would have spent more time outside if the weather was a little warmer. Rob was very responsive in setting up our stay and provided some great recommendations for activities in the area. Highly recommended!

Great lakehouse

My family of five, including our dog, had a wonderful stay at this lakehouse. The owner, Rob, greeted us with a tour of house, wine, and s'mores kit to get our lake adventure started! The pictures on website are accurate but the bonus is the second house close to lake which is enclosed with sitting area & refrigerator. And it has a big deck with over sized grill to lounge, eat, etc. Rob also provides kayaks and floaties which we used every day because the direct waterfront access was so easy. Overall the house was clean and the lake was beautiful and relaxing!

About the host

Hosted by Rob Richardson

Host profile image
I grew up in the area around where the house is located and moved to Boston in 2010. We have family that live in the area and we were looking for a vacation home that we could stay at and have family gatherings when we are in town.

Why they chose this property

This house checked off everything on our list. We wanted a place that was on the water for swimming and boating. We wanted it to be big enough to have family and friends stay over and we wanted it to be close enough to Portland so that it was easy to get to. We didn't want to spend half the weekend traveling to and from the house.

What makes this property unique

In the warmer months, the loons will sing to you from the water, which is fantastic. In the winter months, the sounds of the ice on the lake will lull you to sleep at night. Truly, this is an authentic Maine experience no matter the season.
